Cover Girl: Nicole Kidman for Vanity Fair Magazine

Posted on October 29, 2013

Nicole’s Princess Grace drag is reaching critical mass.

Nicole Kidman covers the December 2013 issue of Vanity Fair magazine photographed by Patrick Demarchelier.

Although the hair looks more like a cross between Marilyn and Ann-Margret. Still, she looks good. Then again, it’s Nicole Kidman on the cover of Vanity Fair. How else would she look?

Inside, the interview takes a weird and unnecessary “Let’s talk about ten years ago” turn.

Reflecting on her marriage to Tom Cruise: “And you know, with no disrespect to what I had with Tom, I’ve met my great love now. And I really did not know if that was going to happen. I wanted it, but I didn’t want it for a while, because I didn’t want to jump from one relationship to another. I had a lot of time alone, which was really, really good, because I was a child, really, when I got married. And I needed to grow up.”

On the unreal level of fame she endured during her marriage to Tom Cruise: “There is something about that sort of existence that, if you really focus on each other and you’re in that bubble, it’s very intoxicating, because it’s just the two of you. And there is only one other person that’s going through it. So it brings you very close, and it’s deeply romantic. I’m sure Brad and Angelina have that—because there’s nobody else that understands it except that person who’s sleeping right next to you.”

On not missing living in Hollywood: “The whole business side of it—it’s too present. It doesn’t suit me. There’s an enormous amount you have to give up if you want to have a family. You can have a certain career, but you can’t be living in Hollywood, [where] absolutely everything, everything revolves around it.”

This is one of those rare things that actually make us feel sorry for celebs; the requirement that they continue to discuss or acknowledge failed relationships with other stars that ended a decade before (cue Affleck and Aniston, in unison: “Fuckin A, right?!”).  Are people really that interested in the Tom-Nicole post-mortem now, in 2013?

She looks like she needs to go to the bathroom and it’s urgent.

    • Meredith

lol. I don’t think anyone can say you’re wrong.

    • Sonja Brisson

You are absolutely right. And why am I so very, very tired of seeing her? It must be the insanely flat-ironed forehead she continues to display. Not even a toddler has that vast expanse of unmarred skullfrontage.

      • Nelliebelle1197

She is on my Irrational Celebrity Hate List. I have been told I look like her (looked, as I currently sport animate face), which makes my hate more rational, I think.

        • Sonja Brisson

Well, if you look like the natural version and are six feet tall, good for you! There’s just something so — she’s always acting, and I never forget she’s acting, which makes her not a great actress, right?

          • Nelliebelle1197

Well, I am much shorter! And I never saw the resemblance but I get Nicole and Rachel McAdams all the time. Of course, now that I am getting old, I am going to have to get shot up with the ‘tox to keep up!

  • nannypoo

Has she had her eyebrows lifted?

    • CT14

      More than once.

I’m amazed by her surgeons’ skill. She doesn’t really look like the actress from “Dead Calm” anymore, but she’s still beautiful.

I’d like it if her hair were a darker red, though. Blond Nicole always looks a bit washed out.

    • Irish Rodriguez Reyes

      To say the least!

  • Glam Dixie

I wasn’t interested in Tom and Nicole 10 years ago. She looks lovely though.

  • MichelleRafter

I was going to say no, we don’t care. But on second thought, I appreciate the maturity of her answer: she speaks like somebody who went through something, has obviously thought about it, and can discuss it with the type of perspective that only the passing of time can bring.

    • Lovely Rita

I totally agree. I thought she sounded really mature and well-spoken, and like she has some insight now. I’m more interested in her perspective on her life than in details about Tom Cruise though.

  • hughman

“One of the riskiest roles of her career”?

You mean playing Grace Kelly, a beautiful movie star who marries and leaves the Hollywood life behind? Yeah, that’s a REAL STRETCH Nicole. You’re one fake nose from playing a real human.

    • Nelliebelle1197

      Will you marry me?

  • lunchcoma

I don’t think people are interested in Tom and Nicole, per se, but I think people are interested in the ongoing creepshow that is Tom and Scientology and she unfortunately gets in the line of fire.

    • alyce1213

And Katie Holmes will be dogged for the rest of her life as well, even moreso. It’s a curse.

      • demidaemon

I feel a little sorry for them. Think about if you had to discuss every one of your past relationships for the rest of your life. Suckage.

Luckily, they have all that money to soothe their pains.

        • NYCGlamourpuss

True – not many of us get to dry our eyes with hundred dollar bills.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

      Yes, this exactly.

  • Sarah

You said Anne Margaret, and now it’s Kim McAfee all day long. Sorry, Nicole, you should be in dungarees and fluffy slippers on the phone talkin’ about Conrad Birdie.

  • MW

How else would she look, you ask? Strangely like Charlize Theron morphed with Amy Adams.

  • annabelle archer

All I’m seeing is Amy Adams playing Nicole Kidman, playing Princess Grace.

    • decormaven

“Like the Land of Lakes butter has that Indian girl, sitting holding a box, and it has a picture of her on it, holding a box, with a picture of her on it, holding a box.”

      • nannypoo

This has nothing to do with Nicole Kidman, but did you know that if you fold the box her knees look like boobs? Endless hours of fun.

        • alyce1213

And T-Lo says this is not an educational website.

        • ballerinawithagun

I grew up in Minnesota. Land O’ Lakes butter was required. The boys loved that folding trick!

          • NYCGlamourpuss

You know the company had to have done that shit on purpose! “Our sales will fly through the roof if 13 year old boys insist that Land O’ Lakes in the cardboard box was the ONLY kind of butter Mom could buy!”

    • charlotte

I’m still bummed that Amy Adams didn’t get the role in the first place (or second, after January Jones).

      • Bridget Smith

Noooo Diane Kruger was BORN to play this role and I am still bitter. She’s the only one with that distinctive square jaw.

    • StellaZafella

      I love this in a 60’s Bardot/Anne Margret kind of way…it just doesn’t look like I expect Kidman to look…maybe that’s a good thing.

      • annabelle archer

That’s funny. This is exactly how I expect her to look. She is so frosty and so blond and so tightly wound. The only time I really find her personally interesting, is when she’s working vampy, edgy looks. (like her Jimmy Choo work). However, on screen, I like her much more. I respond to the amount of perfection and detail she brings to most roles.

        • DuBey2

Totally agree about her acting, and how interesting it is.

    • conniemd

Yes, yes, she looks like Amy Adams, IOW at least 10 years younger on the cover.

      • Mary229

I think it’s more that Amy Adams looks a lot like Nicole before the plastic surgery. I still love Nicole but I miss her old face.

  • International Model

Y’all know that saying, “The bigger the hair, the closer to Monaco royalty.”?

  • Kent Roby

I have no real complaint with Nicole here, except that she still looks like she’s playing a Stepford Wife to me. Incidentally, you just know that Steffi grabbed this issue and flipped right to page 164 to see if she is listed as the “World’s Greatest Living Artist”.

  • Clueless_Jock

    >>Are people really that interested in the Tom-Nicole post-mortem now, in 2013?<<

Nope. I forgot that they were married.

  • MilaXX

Of all the things Nicole has done post Tom, the last thing I want to discuss is her marriage. Ditto Aniston/Pitt and Afleck/JLo. Ancient history. Cover is pretty, but mostly photoshopped of course.

  • DTLAFamilies

If Aniston wasn’t linked to Pitt & Jolie, she wouldn’t have a movie career anymore. She’d be the one starring in Cougartown.

Kidman’s hairstyle is pretty but I don’t like the way the lack of color in the dress and walls makes it look like her head is disembodied.

    • misstressofsylar

Except that Cougartown is really good, way better than those dreadful movies she insists on making.

  • marlie

Another ‘best-she-could-do’ response to a really shitty question. While the rest of Hollywood might still dwell on a marriage that ended 10+ years ago, it’s ludicrous to think that she does, considering that she’s moved on, gotten married, had kids with someone else. I would have loved for her to say, “you know what, I don’t talk about that; it’s in the past,” but I’m sure someone would end up misconstruing it and saying that she’s bitter or something.

Anyway, Nicole looks beautiful on the cover. A modern interpretation of Grace.

    • DTLAFamilies

Actually, celebs usually have an enormous amount of control over what goes into a major on-the-record profile like this one. She’s a big enough star that she likely could’ve kept it out of the magazine if she really wanted to.

      • ampg

And there’s no way in hell they could NOT print any comments she was willing to make. So she must’ve known what she was doing.

    • foodycatAlicia

Maybe it was a tradeoff? “OK, we can talk about Tom but Keith’s stints in rehab are off the table”.

  • Jessica Freeman

Considering most days I forget they were even married, I doubt I’m the only one in the public at large who cares about it 10 years later…certainly could have used some contrast between the walls and clothes…

  • decormaven

I’m giggling because the clueless art director’s layout makes the word “plus” look like an adornment on the gown’s waistband. ITA with the uncles- she’s remarried, he’s remarried and divorced again. The world has turned. Move on!

    • TAGinMO

Yup. To me, the “plus” looked like one of those pin-on buttons at first glance. I half-expected it to say “I Like Ike.”

  • alyce1213

Love this cover, it’s very soft, elegant and pretty. See, Patrick Demarchelier can photograph someone against a white background and it doesn’t look like Terry Richardson’s home porn collection.

    • Nikko Viquiera

we shouldn’t even mention Demarchelier in the same breath with the other dude’s name!

      • demidaemon

  • Diego!

She is nowhere near Grace Kelly… how come the producers didn’t pick up Charlize Theron instead?

    • lunchcoma

Charlize is pretty picky about her roles these days. She probably wasn’t interested.

      • Diego!

        That might be why then!

  • JR Labrador

“Although the hair looks more like a cross between Marilyn and Ann-Margret. ”

With the slightest hint of Hayworth.

In other news, her publicist has confirmed reports that Ms. Kidman has, indeed, never passed gas in her entire life. And if she had, it would’ve smelled like Chanel No. 5.

  • GorgeousThings

“Are people really that interested in the Tom-Nicole post-mortem now, in 2013”
No. But then, we weren’t 10 years ago, either.

  • ashtangajunkie

I wish her hair looked more like this on the red carpet. So shiny and lush.

    • nannypoo

As opposed to dry and scraggly.

    • RebeccaKW

I was thinking the same. It might not be the most modern hair in the world, but it looks pretty and soft and healthy. Much better than pin straight or pulled tightly back in a bun.

  • Scoobydrew

I think that the reason the Tom/Nicole thing lingers is because she had just had a miscarriage and seemed to be devastated by that and his leaving, also he was cryptic and said that she knew exactly why he was leaving … he also seemed to ice her out with the kids. I’m not saying that it’s true, but that is what it look liked at the time. Cheryl Crane calls it “the paragraph” the one defining moment that follows you forever. Nicole is ALWAYS going to have that.

  • Adrianna Grężak

Man, imagine how many questions Katie Holmes will have to answer in ten years.

  • VioletFem

‘m surprised that she even deigned to answer those questions.

  • Jangle57

I guess I’m dating myself but my first thought was: Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens in Bewitched – oddly enough more so than she did when she was in the movie.

  • cocohall

There is very much a “hairshirt” requirement for celebrities it seems for these sorts of profiles. I’m sure publicists have their work cut out for them negotiating what will and won’t be addressed. I think she did a good job of being gracious. My guess is that there is a HUGE VAST ALMOST UNCROSSABLE distance between the public version of Nicole and the private version. And good on her for living outside the circus of Hollywood.

  • marshmallowjane

I’m a little uncomfortable looking at Nicole too closely. She seems deeper and more relaxed at this point in her life. I am a little bit interested in hearing about her and Tom 10 years ago NOW because she seems to have found a mutual love and respect with her current man. In other words, I’d have no interest in being in her shoes 10 years ago, but she has made an interesting transition. Having said all that, her face scares me a bit because her heart and soul don’t match the work she has done to her face.

Nicole wears gowns and high fashion very well. In that way, she’s a good choice to play Grace who was an enigma.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

All I could see was COITUS DISRUPTUS, which sounds like a birth control spell from Harry Potter.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Now I’m trying to imagine a patronus that would go with Coitus Disruptus!

  • Lisa Hager

Anyone else annoyed by where they put that “Plus” circle? It’s making my eye twitch because it almost looks like a button on her dress.

  • cakecakecake

    Another wig?

  • PeaceBang

I am reminded of Joan Rivers’ line: “She’s had her face lifted so many times she has to climb a ladder to blow her nose.” She’s beyond the “looking great” category and into something else like “She is a stunning creation of plastic surgery.” There must be a new category for beautiful that credits the creators, shouldn’t there?

  • demidaemon

That interview is dumb. They really couldn’t think of better questions to ask her? She should have pulled a diva move and refused to answer them.

  • filmcricket

Her wig looks like Ann Margaret’s, but her neck looks like Stallone’s. WTF?

  • MannahattaMamma

is anyone else seeing Christine Baranski in a big blonde ann-margaret wig?

  • shopgirl716

I could not agree more with your last comment. That part of celebrity seems so tedious to me – the endless questions about stuff that happened decades before. I look at people who got really famous when they were very young – like Julia Roberts – and how long she had to explain all her different boyfriends and why they broke up. It’s like they have these relationships that never, ever go away. Staying patient with these questions takes a measure of self discipline I don’t think I possess.

  • Sweetvegan

I didn’t read the full interview, but I wonder if this subject came up because the interviewer was trying to get her to comment on the Tom/Katie split.

  • stubbornthoughts

Honestly, she sounds like a lovely person.

  • greathill

as someone who lives in Newtown, Ct, I’m curious what the article is about that we don’t already know (the article referred to on the bottom right corner). What could they have unearthed? how sad.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

She looks flawless on the cover, no quibbles there.

I do feel bad that her marriage to crazy Tom will constantly be brought up. Hell, they’ve been divorced for so long now that I occasionally forget that she was ever with him – lately I keep mentally congratulating Katie Holmes for making the great escape.

  • Danielle

    • bitchybitchybitchy

You and I can sit virtually together after we’ve gotten our hot little paws on this mag and read that story!

  • Milos Mom

Is that an old picture? Photo Shop? Both? Sorry but that is not her current face.

  • judybrowni

Are people really that interested in the Tom-Nicole post-mortem now, in 2013?

No, but I happened to see them together during filming of A Few Good Men, and she was half a head taller, and he was simply yummy.

It’s embarressing to admit this, but Cruise was so good looking (at the time) my first thought was “She’s not good enough for him.”

  • JDreesen

i’d like the cover better if the inside shot had her swimming all over a floor of baked beans, bubbles, and chocolate bursting through the walls of a room draped in white satin.

    but that’s just me.

  • guest2visits

Waiting for my copy. Always SOMEthing good. Nicole looks pretty amazing.
It’s too bad about the old laundry but she handles the question with a gracious and thoughtful answer.
