Cover Girl: Katy Perry for W Magazine

Posted on October 23, 2013

Good heavens, Miss Perry. You’re beautiful.

Depending on the angle.

Chanel Dress | Fleur du Mal Bra | Harry Winston Earrings and Necklace

Katy Perry covers the November 2013 issue of W magazine photographed by Mario Sorrenti and styled by Edward Enninful.

Michael Kors Turtleneck

Oh, we’re teasing. She’s beautiful no matter what, but if we were her publicist, we’d look at these two shots and determine that, from now on, no one shoots Miss Perry from above in harsh lighting. That first cover is so unflattering that it doesn’t even look much like her. In fact, she looks oddly like a cleaned-up Amy Winehouse in that one.

The second one’s perfection.

The first cover is irritating b/c her breasts are literally front and center. The second cover is more interesting b/c it shows a different side of her

    • Domo_Konnichiwa

The second one is Christina Hendricks with black hair.

      • HeatherMcIlrath

        I didn’t see it at first… but now i can’t unsee it!

      • Mary229

I didn’t see it until you mentioned it.

      • http://missbethg.wordpress.com Beth Ann

The second one is her copying a Marilyn Monroe pose. Perry’s doing the famous Marilyn open-mouthed pose.

    • Mary229

Have to agree. Her breasts are gorgeous but it does seem as though whenever a celeb is large chested we are forced to endure every. single. editorial focused on their chest. In a weird way, I get it. I’m large chested and when I was much younger I made the mistake of always thinking I had to show my chest off or I wasn’t going to look appealing enough. I can only imagine the celebrities feel that ten fold. But it would be nice to not constantly have the photoshoots designed in that way. Who am I kidding though? It will never change.

The photo of her boobs almost includes her crotch. The angle of her face was sacrificed to get a cheap photo.

  • Erica_Vuitton

I see Kristen Stewart in the first one and Danni Minogue in the second… but I don’t see Katy in either!

    • Garcia Loca

Because the Katy you’re used to seeing is not really Katy. The downside of relying on a schtick to craft one’s identity.

  • Scimommy

The first one looks more like Lizzy Caplan that Katy Perry. Not that it’s a problem because clearly you’re not supposed to be looking at her face.

    • shirab

Was just about to write the same thing about Lizzy Caplan!

  • Guest

The second cover is gorgeous. I just hope she wore a white or silver turtleneck instead of the pink. It’s a bit distracting.

  • Garcia Loca

I so much prefer this type of Bardot-esque retro look on Miss Katy vs. the Betty Boop thing she’s been doing for 5 years straight.

    • sagecreek

Same here. I used to just dismiss her, but she has really upped her game of late.

  • hughman

The first is Jane Fonda via Barbarella, the second an attempt at Dame Liz Taylor for sure.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

See, the first one for me is “Maggie the Cat got caught in the rain”…

  • zuzu

I’d love to see that Fan Bingbing spread. More Bingbing!

    • gabbilevy

      THIS!

  • Clueless_Jock

    Damn amazing.

  • looklook

I kinda love the first one more. Her neck kinda looks short in the second short, causing my inner-Tyra to go crrraaaazy.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Did they have to put “Global Issue” underneath her globes in the first shot?

    • another_laura

And right above that peek up her dress, from whence stuff … issues? Okay, that’s gross.

  • Rhonda Shore

She looks gorgeous in both…she’s a stunning woman.

  • Kent Roby

Agreed, second cover is perfection. BTW, I had not heard that Naomi Campbell had invaded and claimed Africa, but it doesn’t surprise me (she scares me).

    • twocee

“Invaded and claimed Africa..” Thank you for a much needed laugh this afternoon.

  • Claudia Fernandes

when i saw the first one thought it was Bellamy Young on scandal

  • mkt-rex

She looks like Mellie from Scandal in the first picture…

    • MilaXX

Now that you’ve said it it does indeed look like Moonshine Mellie.

  • elemspbee

OMG but that second one, her face is angled up so her jaw looks proportionally to big.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Huh, I like the first shot much better. But everyone’s taste is different!

  • Danielle

The second one is giving me serious young Elizabeth Taylor vibes!

  • BrooklynBomber

And oddly like Juliana Margulies in the second!

  • demidaemon

See, I hate both of these covers. The first one is too harsh and in the second one she looks drunk. No bueno for me. However, my interest is piqued by the bylines. Naomi Campbell and Fan Bingbing in one issue? It’s an explosion of fabulosity and diva attitude!

  • JaCory Deon

Katy Perry rivals a man in drag for makeup transformation: without all that paint, hair, etc. she’s quite plain. With it, she can look delicious. Still, she’s not a natural beauty.

  • charlotte

I love how everyone is seeing people who aren’t Katy Perry in these pictures. The second one also reminds me of Audrey Horne from Twin Peaks, but I guess that goes along with the Liz Taylor vibes some of you have mentioned.

  • Cubana Loca

She is absolutely stunning even though she makes me crazy sometimes. The downlighting is bad, though, and you’re absolutely right – not a good photo.

  • MzzPants

She shoulda’ played Liz. And while she does have a gorgeous decolletage, I agree that the first shot pushes the boobage in one’s face.

  • Andrea Jane

I thought the thumbnail on the main page was Rachel McAdams with dark hair.

  • stubbornthoughts

I prefer fabulous face over the boobage, any day.

  • Teresa M.

She’s got Elizabeth Hurley eyes and mouth in the second photo.

  • hillaryschuster

I think she looks like Jessica Paré in the second photo.

  • nannypoo

I think they’re both beautiful but neither looks at all like her.

  • amanda lynn

entertained that the 2nd sweater is a turtleneck. :)

  • Chevalle

She looks like a black haired January Jones in the first picture.

  • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

Few attractive people are photogenic from every angle. The boobs are in our face. I find that approach boring and predictable. Katy is full of interesting angles. There’s no excuse for the lack of imagination.

  • Fuchaforever

In the first one she looks like the annoying Kristin Stewart

  • the_valkyrie

She looks like Mellie from Scandal in the first picture.

    • thrillckr

That’s exactly what I thought when I saw the pic.

  • ctvrtk

I love the second photo, but maybe it’s because she is delivering Jessica Paré realness.

  • carnush

Yeah…that first cover isn’t about her face at all.

  • NOLA_gal

I dunno, guys. I think she actually looks like herself in the first photo (although badly lit and too boobtacular); I think the second photo looks like Jessica Pare. It doesn’t look like Katy at all – I’m all for Ms Perry de-Boopifying herself, but not by being photoshopped out of existence!

  • Pterodactyl111

Her boobs look great in the first one though.

  • HobbitGirl

I covet her perfect cateyes. And I kinda really love her new album. #IRegretNothing

  • guest2visits

She should do these covers all the time.

  • bringbackbeatles

She always looks beautiful, but that second shot is perfection. That pink sweater on her beautiful creamy skin is just amazing with that perfect cat eye and that pink lip. I like the edginess of the first photo but it doesn’t quite come together as nicely as the second. Love to see a girl without a tan too, since I myself am a pale chick.
