Chloe Sevigny for Town&Country Magazine

Posted on October 09, 2013

J’ADORE:

Chloe Sevigny covers the November 2013 issue of Town&Country magazine in Christian Dior photographed by David Dunan and styled by Hannah Teare.

We literally clapped and laughed at the sight of this cover. It’s just so very Sevigny; smart and sexy and a little funny mixed with a little weird.

On being labeled an “It Girl:” “It must come up when you Google me or something. I’d rather cut off my pinkie than Google myself. The whole ‘It Girl’ thing—I never felt that was the correct label, because I saw that as meaning ‘flash in the pan,’ or ‘socialite,’ or ‘rich girl,’ or ‘druggie girl,’ or ‘model girl,’ even though its origin is Clara Bow, who was the coolest thing ever.”

On getting the acting bug early: “I saw Annie in kindergarten. And then I was like, ‘I want to do that.’ ”

On finding inspiration in fashion magazines: “Marianne Faithfull and Debbie Harry—those were the first images I ever saw of women that I thought were beautiful.”

On the friends she gravitated towards in high school: “They were the ‘cool kids,’ the ones who were also the rejects and the delinquents, and probably the children of alcoholics or divorced parents. People I fit in with.”

On being pigeonholed in Hollywood: “I may have hurt myself as far as being pigeonholed. It’s always this ’90s indie-girl thing. I can’t crawl out of that, at least in Hollywood’s perception of me.”

LUV HUH. Hollywood’s never going to see her as an A-List ladystar because she’s just got too much quirkiness going on. She can’t fight it. It’s who she is. We wouldn’t peg it solely as a ’90s indie girl kind of thing. She’s just not very Hollywood. That’s what makes her great, as far as we’re concerned.

And yes, this is pure Town & Country drag; a slight parody of the looks the magazine favors. It’s brilliant. And she looks great.

I need a world where it is socially acceptable for us normals to wear shorts and hold-ups in public. And then in that world, I need Chloe Sevigny’s legs.

    • Adrianna Grężak

I’ve seen plenty of girls dressed like that in NYC!

      • SugarSnap108

I have been one of those girls in NYC.

    • marlie

That world exists; you just have to move there. ;)

    • Alloy Jane

You don’t need her legs to rock this look. Besides, dismembering another human is illegal.

  • filmcricket

The cover looks like a knitting magazine.

    • Garcia Loca

And that is a wonderful thing! I’m very nostalgic about my Verenas.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Ripped from the covers of Vogue Knitting. Best I’ve seen her look, though.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Speaking of the cover, I’m actually curious to know what happens when a king runs out of money.

    • notterriblybitter

I’m going to spend the long holiday weekend figuring out the pattern for that sweater.

  • Danielle

The last shot is giving me LIFE. Never change, Sev.

  • Latin Buddy

What?! No named characters or personalities?

First look, meet “Natalie”, a Valley girl with a fake Italian accent. She loves to knit

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I can’t even get happy about seeing her unless I know there’s going to be an alter-ego. She looks great, but I’m totally sad!

      • http://wikeslongtrail.blogspot.com/ latenac

Me, too. I wasn’t going to click through on Feedly but then I remembered that TLo does nice little alter egos for her and I got excited. Now I’m disappointed although I might admit I love the photos.

    • boweryboy

Second look, meet “Thérèse”, a grade school French teacher by day and swinging dominitrix of the underground NYC BDSM scene by night. She loves croissants and nipple clamps.

      • carpediva

Liked just because Thérèse is my middle name and growing up I thought it was so cool that no one else’s middle name was French and had accent marks! :D

Totally different set of “loves” than this version, though!

      • mmebam

Third look: Meet “Tawny” the ironic hipster barista/model who silently weeps for the cows who sacrificed for your precious macchiato.

        • hexiadetrix

Fourth shot: Meet Countess von Sachertorte-Masoch, an early pupil of Freud. Enjoys giving rectal examinations to patients and doing her own dishes.

        • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

I was going to go with Qristi. When she got on the Greyhound bus in Moline yesterday morning, her name was Ted.

      • Heather

ALL of these are awesome, but if I had to vote, I think I’d pick Therese.

      • Alloy Jane

        I <3 you.

    • Beth513

I felt that this was “Francesca” but I also pegged her a knitter.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

That hair! Chloe Sevigny has this intense charisma. In twenty years, she’ll be talked about the way we talk about Debbie Harry.

    • Imasewsure

Sorry but no… Debby Harry is a goddess and an icon… Chloe is fun and talented but not quite in that same league…. she is a BK goddess though!!

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Give it twenty years, even though I’m afraid it will elevate Gummo to some sort of fashion movement…

      • kolokOlchik

Have you ever seen Chloe act? Really act? You clearly missed out.

  • marlie

I *LOVE* the way she’s styled and dressed here. Take the standard T&C drag and “Sev” it up.

  • Imasewsure

Marianne Faithful and Debby Harry as inspirations? AWESOME… love the whole ironic but not above it all fun here! A little bit slutty but still oh so upper crust…LUV LUV

    • marlie

What’s slutty about this look? I hate that word on principle, but there’s absolutely nothing in this photoshoot that could be considered “slutty”, in my opinion. There’s ONE look where she’s showing her thighs, and she’s still not showing that much skin.

      • boweryboy

Sometimes “slutty” is a good thing. Just sayin’.

      • Imasewsure

Slutty is an old school campy word to me…. aka Michael Kors… “slutty slutty slutty” … As alyce1213 says, maybe naughty is a term that is less negative but I don’t see “a little bit slutty” as a negative – just a fun attitude

        • marlie

OK, “slutty” I have a problem with, but I can get behind “naughty.” When I think “slutty,” I think of something VASTLY different than the photos above. :)

          • Bexxx

See, I find naughty to generally be associated with fetishizing women, whereas I think slutty has been reclaimed as positively owning one’s promiscuity or sexuality, which is more what I’m getting from these pictures.

    • alyce1213

      Maybe more like ‘naughty.’

      • Taylor

That last one is giving me “naughty equestrian” all the way.

  • zenobar

That last photo is vigorously slapping the cheeks of my lunch-induced coma.

  • Rand Ortega

    All of her alters approve.

  • crash1212

Really good choices for her. Best she’s ever looked. The pink gloves in the last look are everything.

    • Rhonda Shore

agree, there’s something romantic about these looks, i love the styling.

  • Chuck Barthelme

Yowza. Great spread. She looks hot.

  • decormaven

That ring on the cover- gorgeous! And who knew pink gloves could be so hot?

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Such a lovely humpday treat-now we BK await the next Chloe and her alters!

  • GillianHolroyd

    KWERKY!

    Sorry, not a fan.

  • Sif

Chloe Sevigny is brilliant for her small role in American Horror Story season 2 and Louie. She looks fab here!

    • NoveltyRocker

She was a pretty awesome addition to the last season of Portlandia too, loved her in those episodes.

      • kolokOlchik

        watch Big Love.

    • Shawn EH

So good on Louie, Who does pretty well, what with her, Parker Posey and Melissa Leo as guest stars. Oh, and Joan Rivers.

  • Diego!

She is crazy but I love her too! What incarnation is she portaying here?

  • RebeccaKW

I love her and I love these shots. Killa.

But what is up with her hip on the cover? Is that just an peplum of some sort?

  • mjude

    a tiny bow down

  • lobsterlen

Chole looks fantastic and she sure is working the look.

As goofy as she and her alter egos look sometime that is the most sensible normal sounding honest magazine interview of a celebrity I have read in a very long time.

    • demidaemon

I agree. There was something no-nonsense yet honest about it that really appealed to me. It probably helped that it wasn’t in a “mainstream” magazine.

  • Miss WKS

Linda Evans hair do. LOVE it.

  • frannyprof

    LOVE THIS

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Does Chloe *have* preppy cool to have secrets about? Preppy?

    • alyce1213

The girl’s from Darien, CT. There’s no more preppy than that.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Ah. I thought preppy was a fashion subculture, not a place.

        • alyce1213

It is fashion subculture, born and bred in places like Darien.

  • E2_Remote

Love her. She was the only reason I kept watching Big Love for as long as I did.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Claps and giggles. Absolutely. She is divine.

  • xmixiex

3rd photo, those shoes, SWEET BABY JESUS

  • MilaXX

LOVE IT! Each look tells a different story. I can imagine alters for each of them.

  • Sabin

Wow, I’ve never seen her professionally photographed before. She’s stunning, especially because she’s not a cookie cutter starlet.

I’d only ever seen her here before, in snapshots, whee she tends to look like Tonya Harding’s slightly edgy, lady-wrestler baby cousin.

    • Alloy Jane

That’s a hilarious description. Maybe one day we’ll see her carrying ice skates and a cricket bat and this fantasy will be realized.

  • AC Simons

I’m kind of on the fence about her, but she seems like she has fun with clothes and her image. Loved her in “Portlandia.”

  • MmmmmmmmK

I love the one in knee stockings. Kills.

  • SugarSnap108

I LOVE this. Making fun of T&C, and looking absolutely fabulous while doing it.

  • Kissy

She’s so completely obnoxious and up herself. That cover is great though.

    • demidaemon

Are we reading the same interview? I did not get that at all.

  • kolokOlchik

She looks amazing. I am so glad that she finally looks as good as she deserves to. The drag that she wears normally doesn’t do her justice. i am a huge fan of hers from Big Love. She took a complex and difficult character and made her fragile and lovable, which was an impossible feat. So yes, J’ADORE!

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

chloe is one of my all time favorites. the hair is quite strange. it’s giving me spicy flying nun schoolmarm realness.

  • Qitkat

Great interview. Love that New England is still so special to her. She has roots and wings.

  • RussellH88

It’s not fair that she gets to be Chloe Sevigny and I don’t.

  • Trisha26

Love everything about these shots & love her on screen!

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

    Pink gloves. Awesome.

  • hexiadetrix

Fourth shot: Meet Countess von Sachertorte-Masoch, an early pupil of Freud. Enjoys giving rectal examinations to patients and doing her own dishes.

  • Kent Roby

The “A Royal Mess” headline seems to be for her, and I mean that in a good way.

  • quiltrx

I love her interview answers! Most come off sounding so calculated and measured–she sounds like a real person who just happens to be an actress. I love the schoolmarm/9 to 5 styling, it’s a hoot. The last picture is giving me life, particularly the magical pink gloves.

  • GorgeousThings

I saw that Dior up close and personal in Paris. How I wish I didn’t have to pay college tuition; it would have been MINE!

  • Little_Olive

Amazing. Aside from laughing my a** off with her alters, I normally don’t like her very much; but this is just the right tone of fashion+sense of humor. Who thought T&C would finally do it with her.

  • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Good Evening America. I’m Chloe Sevigny. It’s recently come to my attention that I love black and white colooouuuurs.

  • Trickytrisha

Okay, who do I need to mug to acquire those gloves?

I love how Chloe’s top half in the pictures is all prim and proper and the bottom half is headed a discreetly kinky club in Amsterdam. Plus, that hair do is perfection on a stick.

  • sagecreek

    LoLove it!

I don’t want to be offensive, but I know some subs that are going to buy extra copies of this magazine :)

  • PastryGoddess

    That hair is TDF

  • DeTrop

    She looks amazing.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I just got in from the dentist. I needed this.

    • formerlyAnon

      *sympathies*
Hope the pain killers are adequate and the bill won’t be crippling.

  • Fuchaforever

Finally she looks great!!! Go Chloe I knew you had it in you!

  • formerlyAnon

    She has a great face.

  • lulukittie

Did anyone else think of the sexy secretary from Adam Ant’s “Goody Two Shoes” video? No? Just me?

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

    T-Lo, Chloe posts require alters!

  • minnye

Best Chloe pics I’ve seen. Perfection!

  • Judy_J

Love that shot of her in the plaid blouse. She has a great smug look on her face.

  • Jane

Wow she looks amazing. I have never seen T&C mag. look so good! Besides she was freaking amazing in Portlandia all season and also in the Mindy Project.
