Chiwetel Ejiofor at the “12 Years a Slave” LA Premiere

Posted on October 16, 2013

We’re thinking he can smell that Oscar.

Chiwetel Ejiofor attends the premiere of “12 Years a Slave” in Los Angeles, California.

Much like the actress nominees and their required style transformation if they want to remain a viable contender (See: Winslet, Kate; Portman, Natalie; Hathaway, Anne, and countless others) the male contenders have to put their best fashion foot forward too, and they don’t have the fallback of relying on glamour or sex appeal. No, for them, it’s Serious Suits for Serious Men. In that respect, he’s doing exactly what he’s supposed to.

Still, we’re afraid the Serious Nominee Suit is intersecting with the red carpet trend of dressing for a funeral, which means we’re in for a sea of black suits with black ties between now and the moment that envelope opens. Bleh.

Gorgeous suit, though. We’ll give him that. And the skinny tie really suits his face. But he’s got those pants yanked up way too high, causing all kinds of distracting crotchal issues, and he needs to shoot his cuffs so we can see them.

  • The jacket fits admirably. The vest is pulling slightly across his chest. The pants are indeed too high. maybe he decided to high rise them to avoid having to hem a borrowed suit. Yeah to the skinny tie, but a dashing color would have pulled this right away from Funeral Directorland. Emerald green? Purple?

    • MilaXX

ooh I like the idea of purple.

  • Janet B

    Yep, distracting crotchal issues.

    • Jessica Freeman

You say that like it’s a bad thing. Eh hem.

      • NOLA_gal

Right? I thought maybe crotchal issues might be the whole point of hoiking the pants up. Also completely randomly, a friend’s son played his movie son in this, and I’m swooning over the two degrees of separation!

    • YoungSally

Perhaps it is a reminder of many sausage Fridays to come….

  • Jessica Freeman

Don’t Serious Nominees join the Clean Shaven Club as well? Cus they sure do need to.

    • Bethany Roullett

Ben Affleck says no. But I agree that it’s not a campaign that will work for everyone.

    • H2olovngrl

      Nope. See Cooper, Bradley.

    • formerlyAnon

      I SO wish.

  • jeanzhane

By all means, Chiwetel, distract away.

  • Danielle

LOVE the choice of a skinny tie for him. LOVE it.

  • Sobaika

10 bucks says the awards shine goest to Fassbender and Cumberbatch.

    • Rand Ortega

While I agree that is the typical Hollywood SOB, not only is his performance transcendent, unlike most stories of this type that have white saviors as the main character, he is the absolute focus of the film.

    • Billie_Dawn

Most of the buzz so far really is around Ejiofor, with Fassbender running a close second. A lot of the reviews I read only mention Cumberbatch briefly.

      • NinjaCate

I didn’t even know Sherlock was IN that movie.

        • WendyD

          He’s only in it briefly.

      • Sobaika

I hope that’s the case. I’ve only ever seen Fassy shilling for it (The Daily Show, GQ) and heard a lot about his performance.

      • ShaoLinKitten

Also heard buzz on Michael B. Jordan for Fruitvale Station, Robert Redford for All Is Lost, and Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips. Some buzz about Idris Elba as Mandela as well. Would be nice to have more than one nominee of color this year.

        • SassieCassy

fruitvale station needs to be a best film nominee.

        • MilaXX

I’m still keeping my fingers crossed and hoping on Ejiofor. The buzz is really strong on this and every so often there comes a time when Hollywood feels compelled to recognize at least 1 POC. I think this may be his year. Sadly just like I knew it would be either Viola or Octavia, if it comes down to Michael B. Jordan or Chiwetel Ejiofor, Chi wins.

          • ShaoLinKitten

I haven’t seen either movie because I am basically unable to go to the theater ever. Did you like Chiwetel’s performance better? I must admit that from a visceral level I am rooting for Michael B. Jordan because I have loved him since The Wire and have followed his career through Friday Night Lights and into the movies. I think he is beautiful, talented, and I want to see him succeed. That said, I hope that whoever is most deserving wins. Would love to see them both nominated.

          • MilaXX

I haven’t seen 12 Days a slave yet. My feelings are based on the heavy Oscar buzz 12 Days is getting, and how I perceive Oscar voting leans when it comes to POC

          • ShaoLinKitten

            12 Years…

          • MilaXX

my bad. I blames the meds.

  • Clueless_Jock

Indeed, cuffs complete the look on a sharply tailored suit.

  • Imasewsure

Boring… he looks really nice of course but I wish that the Serious Contenders could rock some more interesting ties at least

  • Bethany Roullett

I think he’s a great actor, it’s nice to see more people learning who he is too. Though I suspect that his name will be this year’s contender for the ‘Quvenzhane Wallis prize for most mangled name at award season’.

Also, whenever I see him, I always start to hear the song “Whatever Lola Wants” in my head. Does Lola want an Oscar?

  • marlie

He looks just lovely in this suit, and I’m glad his facial hair is at least neat. And I didn’t notice those crotchal issues until TLo pointed them out, and now I can’t look away.

  • What a very attractive man. I don’t mind him poledancing for an Oscar at all!

  • hughman

Speaking of dated fashion trends like skinny ties, does anyone remember Vicky Davis ties from the 80s? It was a MUST HAVE in my circles back then and I remember rushing to Bloomingdales in NY and snatching up a few. I still have them although now they look absurdly slim, like shoestrings made of silk.

  • decormaven

That second shot- wonderful! I agree, he’s dressing for the Oscar. Good luck, sir!

  • boweryboy

Looking good, and in this case “distracting crotchal issues” isn’t such a bad thing because damn. However, I still want to give his ‘fro a close cropping.

  • I want him to be Lando Calrissian, Jr.

    • Rand Ortega

OMG. Is that a thing? Is that possible w/in the new JJ Abrams Star Wars reboot? If it is, I’ll need a moment to myself.

      • I just keep trying to Jedi Cast/Write this. Because I believe that JJ Abrams keeps up with my comments on fashion blogs…(you never know…)

      • MilaXX

It would both make me happy and pretty much guarantee I buy a ticket.

    • H2olovngrl

THAT’S who he looks like! I was thinking Lawrence Fishburne, but nope. He looks like Billy Dee with a little Fishburne thrown in for good measure.

    • And now I just read where he met with JJ Abrams. I feel like a reality maker!

  • ShaoLinKitten

The crotchal issues are indeed distracting.

  • majorbedhead

I thought I was the only one seeing the distracting crotchal issues. Glad to know I’m not the only…observant, yeah observant, that’s the word, one.

  • H2olovngrl

That’s a whole lotta shine for a very serious suit

    • Bexxx

I believe the correct term is Very Serious Suit.

  • Heather

I can’t even see the suit. I’m too distracted by his beautiful eyes and full lips….

    • MilaXX

don’t just want to kiss those lips? Just me? sorry!

      • Heather

More than kiss!! I’m a sucker for a man with full, beautiful lips.

        • tinyredlocks

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Love the skinny tie (and the crotchal issues).

  • LaSylphide

Loving the vest. Well, loving him!. I’ve long thought he was a superb but criminally underused actor. It looks like his time is finally here. I really hope he gets that Oscar.

  • vicki

Please, he is a totally handsome man, prodigiously talented. Anyone who saw, “Dirty pretty Things” knows that. Hmmm, nice to look at even in a serious suit.

  • MilaXX

Man style question here; Would a checker shirt have worked with this, or would it have made the look too casual?
In more lustful news….. man, I adore this guy!

  • crash1212

    What’s “shoot the cuffs”?

    • JauntyJohn

      From the Urban Dictionary:
      “shoot your cuffs”
A male preening gesture, whereby a man wearing a
suit extends both his arms rapidly outwards (i.e. shoot), so that his
dress shirt sleeves extend nicely beyond his suit sleeves.

Personally, I always thought it was just “make sure your shirt cuffs extend about half an inch past your blazer’s sleeves.” I didn’t know it required a calisthenic gesture to get it right.

      • formerlyAnon

I have most often witnessed it executed in a combination move of extending one arm at a time rapidly outwards while fishing for edge of cuff with opposite hand and when grasped, guiding shirt cuff to desired placement beyond hem of sleeve. Perhaps it takes a pro to perform it bilaterally.

      • crash1212

Thank you. Urban Dictionary knows all! I’ve “shot my cuffs” under a blazer and didn’t even know it!

  • JauntyJohn

My first impression was that he looks impeccable.

    My second impression, too.

  • River

    So talented, so handsome.

  • oohsparkley!

I volunteer to give him a shave.

  • I like his distracting crotchal issues.

  • tereliz

Shoot the cuffs, shave the face. Otherwise, he looks yummy. A colored tie would have been a treat!

  • nannypoo

I haven’t seen the movie yet but I’ll give him the Oscar for Hottest Actor in a Leading Role.

  • dharmabum8

There were clothes? I can’t see beyond the brilliant and the insanely hot. *hearteyes*

  • I’m sorry…did you say something???? There’s a problem with his what? I got a little distracted.
oh my….sigh…be still my beating heart.

  • formerlyAnon

He manages to look both appealing and pleasant. Like somebody you want to sit next to at that long boring thing you have to attend but need not attend to.

  • I have been a fan of Mr. Ejiofor since “Kinky Boots”. Such a wonderful actor – and such a gorgeous man (I can still see him in those fab red boots!)! I agree the suit’s a tad funearial……but my, he does wear it well!
