Charlize Theron in Stella McCartney at the 2013 Variety Power of Women Event

Posted on October 07, 2013

It’s funny how your mind and your circumstances meet up and decide on something for you, independent of your own conscious input. More and more lately, as the countdown to our book release ramps up and we’ve made a commitment to providing more content than ever (i.e., these two bitches are busier than they’ve ever been before), we find that our first post of the day – and especially our first post of the week – needs to be a little fashion comfort food. We can’t quite deal with a Zosia Mamet disaster or Christina Hendricks bless-her-heart moment first thing in the morning. We need something sweet and soothing in our celebrity fashion.

So, here. Have a glazed donut to start off your day. You know you want one.

Charlize Theron attends Variety’s 5th Annual Power of Women Luncheon Presented by Lifetime in a Stella McCartney dress paired with a Stella McCartney clutch and Giuseppe Zanotti pumps.

Is it perfect? Enh. Not really. The shape’s not great and it’s all a bit on the flimsy side. But it’s pretty much impossible to put Charlize Theron in a little white dress and have it come out looking bad.

Love those earrings, what an interesting take on pearls.

    • mshesterp

Hmm…when I first saw them I thought it looked like she had some weird ear condition, like elephantitis. But the rest of her looks fab. Love the hair.

    • Sam Smith

Agree, TLo, please identify for us.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Though she does look great, there’s something a trifle,…bleak about it.

    • RedRaven617

It’s not the dress that’s bleak; it’s the Monday morning at 6:30 that is bleak.

  • VioletFem

The only reason this dress looks so good is because Charlize Theron is wearing it (and accessorized quite well).

    • Nicholas

      … because Stella McCartney.

      • mshesterp

        …of course.

    • decormaven

      Amen and amen.

    • demidaemon

      Totally.

  • kayleymaybe

Proof that Charlize Theron can look good even while wearing a sack.

    • Guest

      Haute burlap, bitches.

  • Emily Smith

She is other-worldly levels of gorgeous.

    • Nicholas

      Some serious Galadriel realness.

  • Deac82

She also wore this dress b/c of a recent surgery incision on her neck. Apparently there was something wrong with one of her vertebrae. On a lesser woman, that neck piece would be stumpefying (is that a word??).

    • BrooklynBomber

I wouldn’t have known that but now that you mention it, you can see a bandage.

    • Jessica O’Connell

She had something wrong with her vertebrae, just had surgery, and still looks better and is walking better in heels than I ever have/will.

Kind of hate her for being so fabulous.

  • Jessica Freeman

It looks a bit like it’s choking her. But it’s Charlize, and this woman could show up in a burlap sack and make a fashion statement.

    • Meg0GayGuys6

That’s the one part of the dress I don’t like. She’ll always look amazing though… damn her.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Ah Monday. Charlize is here, fresh as a daisey while I am an over slept, frizz bomb, lucky to have remembered fresh undies, mess. Seems about right.

  • Diego!

Charlize can wear anything she likes and look fierce as sh*t!!! Girl knows how to rock on the red carpet / or in front of the cameras. Love her hair & earrings!

  • Hetha Innis

I was recently scrolling through a page of dresses and kept thinking they were meh, then saying to myself that if only I could see them on Charlize, they might actually just be great dresses. What a goddess!

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I love the python-embossed fabric and the idea of the dress, but the floating choker collar bit upsets me.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

That’s actually there because she had surgery recently and there’s a bandage/incision on her neck. It reminds me of that ghost story where the girl takes the ribbon off her neck and her head falls off.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

    I love her haircut

  • AnneElliot

I’m undecided about the pearl earrings, but love Charlize’s shoes and clutch. The white shoes on the model are just awful. But Charlize is a fashion goddess and rarely gets in wrong. A good way to start a Monday.

  • formerlyAnon

Shoes are more striking than the dress. But I like the collar, though the slight droopiness might not work on everyone.

  • Erica_Vuitton

She looks like a sexy cult leader! I detest that sloppy puss bow neckline and the shoes don’t go at all. Only thing I like here is the clutch.

  • imakeart

To paraphrase a famous theme song….”She can take a nothing dress and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile.”

  • jmorino08

    I cannot with that model.

    • Valdri8

She looks like a crack whore looking for some Sterno for her next meal. Are you kidding me?

  • flamingoNW

That is one stunning woman. She looks fab!

  • Zubair Ghumro

Who cares about the dress and quibbles? Its Charlize Theron! Just bow down!

  • ashtangajunkie

So very happy that she went with the Giuseppe Zanotti pumps rather than those hideous things that the model is wearing. I looooooove her hair short.

    • kimmeister

Her pumps are the best part of the look!

  • Sunraya

Stella makes sheet. Charlize, for some reason unfathomable to me, wears sheet. The end. Yeech.

  • mrsdalgliesh

I’m sure I’m not the first to predict this, but Charlize is going to be one fantastic looking 70 year old. We’re all still going to be gasping at her pictures as she outclasses all the youngsters.

I also predict/hope that this will not occur in Stella McCartney apparel. Gah, I am so over her “designs.”

  • Frank_821

This really shows the power of the model and the Tlo adage of “girl that’s not your dress”.

Charlize has probably has 15 years on the model in the look book. Yet on the model the outfit is drab whereas our Ms Theron is breathing life into this simple dress just by her innate Fashion Reiryoku (“spirit energy” for you who are not Bleach fans)

    • demidaemon

      Loving the Bleach reference!

  • crash1212

    Her earrings have underboob.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

It’s like a small pearl is pooping out a big pearl through her earlobe.

    • calimon

      It is a bit odd.

  • SugarSnap108

This is a really pricey sack for high-end potatoes. And she’s still gorgeous, damn her.

  • d4divine

The modle looks terrible! She looks like she is gonna have a crying tantrum at any moment. Lol

    • mlle

They’ve styled her so that she looks like she’s just gotten off a three day bender.

      • fursa_saida

The angle is awful, too. How is it that whoever was in charge of this ad campaign looked at this image and said, “YES. THIS IS IT.” How does that happen? Who? Why?

  • MilaXX

I really like her with short hair and I am coveting those earrings.

  • Janet B

Charlize and the fabric are gorgeous! The dress is okay.

  • BrooklynBomber

“glazed donut” – perfect. The close up of the dress is a disappointment (that “texture”), though. But, still.

  • Shawn EH

    Stella, you’re not Mod.

  • Adelaidey

    POWER GIRL.

  • marlie

Charlize looks lovely, but there’s something wonky about the collar/neck of the dress that I can’t get behind.

  • Glam Dixie

Looks like another one of Stella’s interns got to design a dress because no way did she have a hand in something so uncomplicated.

    • Glam Dixie

I always hold her up as an example for my daughter. Charlize said that she used to be insecure about being so tall and that now she owns her height and loves being the tallest person in a room. My daughter is 16 and she’s 5’9″ and very thin which makes her look even taller. I tell her, you’ve got to own it. Wear your heels, if the boys have to look up, so what. Charlize Theron says so and she’s freaking gorgeous.

  • Rhonda Shore

    Her hair grows fast.

  • jen

She is absurdly gorgeous. I’d hate her if she didn’t seem so fun.

  • Qitkat

Always lovely Charlize. Even with those pregnant earrings.

  • CT14

This “dress” looks like it needs pants.

It’s not that it’s too short. I think it’s just the shapelessness. Theron can get away with wearing a sack, but especially in the model picture…it just needs something!

    Ugh…Stella McCartney.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

The almost too beautiful to be human Ms. Theron and white dresses are a match made in heaven.

  • calimon

Thank you Uncles T&Lo! I successfully resisted a glazed old fashioned donut at the coffee shop this morning. I will happily accept this in lieu of.

  • kimmeister

The gigantic armscyes are what bother me the most about the dress.

  • MannahattaMamma

Does anyone think it’s weird that it’s a woman’s power luncheon in hollywood, where no hollywood power-gal would EVER cop to eating more than 2 lettuce leaves and a perrier, at least in public?

  • demidaemon

Charlize is doing all the work here. The fabric looks really flimsy and cheap–like cheap tank top flimsy. Lucky for Stella, its Charlize in this. Anyone else and this would probably be a hot mess.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I…. I like a Stella McCartney dress? Hold me, I’m frightened.

  • teensmom99

With Charlize’s body, this kind of shapeless thing can work. For mortal human beings, not so much.

  • WittyCism

First thought: Whoa, crazy earrings! Second thought: I want to try them on…

  • tereliz

Love the styling! It’s not that great of a dress, but the earrings, shoes and bag are killin’ it! Oh, and also her head.
