It pains me to say this, but I’m not really loving it. I think the dress matches her skin tone way too much. It would look gorgeous on something with darker skin, though.

      • 3boysful

You said exactly what I am thinking.

      • Iva

I also don’t like the alterations to the bottom. For me all the charm of the runway version was in the floaty bits at the hem. It looks like a boring, flesh-toned straight jacket as worn by Cate.

      • elizonthelam

If the dress were in a dark midnight blue or a dark red I think it would be lovely. But in this color, standing still, and toned down hem, it needs to be on a darker skinned woman to show off its delicate pretty.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I luvs me some Cate, but this is all just a bit too Beige for me. Plus, those shoes look like they are KILLING her feet.

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I feel as if she’s been in a serious decline of fabulous and no one wants to say it. We all love her truly, but when was the last time we were giddy with awe?

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

          Lord, say it ain’t true!

        • decormaven

Please don’t rock the fragile balance. The world’s atilt as it is, and unfortunately, deadlines continue to be met.

        • SugarSnap108

I sadly have to agree. With each of her past few looks, I’ve been thinking/typing, “Well, she’s still a goddess, despite this outfit.” Now I just feel like her goddess-ness is waning. I shall now find a corner and quietly weep.

        • Adriana_Paula

I loved the Givenchy from a week or two ago; I’m still a believer.

      • schadenfreudelicious

those are indeed some tortured looking toes…

        • 3boysful

Therein lies the problem with ladies’ heels–the higher the heel, the further forward goes the ball of your foot, and the toe boxes are never overly large.

I think sometimes when we think the shoes are too large, it’s just the foot sliding forward because of the slant.

      • Rhonda Shore

while i agree on the shoes, i think you guys are being too hard on Cate, I mean, i know the bar is high, but the color of the dress accentuates the alabaster of her skin in a positive way…she really looks like she’s made of ivory.

        • mlle

I would like the matchy dress if her shoes weren’t a different beige. I’d also prefer a dusky rose lipstick, since I think it would go better with the romantic and ethereal look she was shooting for than the colour she’s wearing.

          • Rhonda Shore

i don’t love the harsh lipstick. i was agreeing on how tortured her poor feet look in those shoes, more than the color (which is meh).

          • conniemd

I would have preferred the dress in a color other than ivory, it does make her look otherworldly and like Galadriel. I really think the problem, as you say was the harsh lipstick. It clashed with the ethereal look of her hair, skin and dress.

            • leahpapa

“Special Moments by Galadriel Bridal” came to mind.

        • MilaXX

Except her face is one color her neck/collarbone a shade lighter, and her skin the palest of them all. I love when my pale sister embrace their paleness, but Cate needs to pick a shade.

          • Rhonda Shore

so the problem is really the make-up, not the dress…

            • MilaXX

Except it makes the overall look odd, and I’m never gonna cosign a dress that looks like it grew out of your skin as ethereal and cute.

        • mshesterp

Agreed–I think the dress is lovely on her, but dislike everything else: the shoes (ouch! and ugh), the lipstick shade and the makeup. But the dress color makes her look very creamy and lovely.

          • Rhonda Shore

I was starting to feel like i was insane!!!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I have a huge Cate crush, but this is not working, alas. It’s almost exactly the same color as her skin-and that lipstick, to me, is glarlingly bright.
Ms. Blanchett, your legions are anxiously awaiting your return to the land of fabulosity. Please, don’t disappoint us.

    • Introspective

its like the emperor’s new clothes. literally.

    • Stella Zawistowski

The dress was more interesting with the extra layers (although I suspect that’s only true when it’s in motion). Not loving this nightgown-y version in a shade too close to her skin tone.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

      My soul, she is broken.

The nearly garish makeup is making all this nude even more nude and it was plenty nude enough.

      • amanda siegelson

my immediate thought when seeing these pictures was: ‘why is she wearing clown make-up?’
whoever had a hand in this should be sent packing.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

They should be sent packing, or sent to meet a party of particularly nasty Orcs. Galadriel should never, ever, be seen in clown face.

    • SewingSiren

The hair should be in soft chignon, but other wise perfection.

    • decormaven

It’s like a Cate balloon floating down the RC. Her body completely disappears in this outfit.

      • kimmeister

All I see are a floating pair of lips.

    • Elsewhere1010

Amateur-level photography and general Crimes of Photoshop. Nothing to see here. LIterally.

    • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

She looks like an incredibly sexy ghost. I’m not sure how I feel about that.

      • demidaemon

I feel pretty good about it, personally.

    • Danielle

I embrace the pale, but all the beige almost hurts my eyes to look at.

      • RussellH88

I’m pale as well, so I try to stay away from light hues and white. Instead I usually wear brighter, bolder colors, or black.

I’m a color slut, though. I have some insane socks. Lots of stripes, polka dots, and other weird patterns.

    • Tanya Wade

It’s really not a good dress for her, the mascara is too clumpy and it’s time for a root touch up. But her skin must be the most perfect on the planet, and really: Wouldn’t we all love to attend a Gala Tribute to ourselves? That must be the pinnacle.

      • decormaven

If there was ever a tribute to moi, it would have to have a stompin’ performance of “I’m Still Here,” just like Shirley MacLaine”s take on it in Postcards from the Edge.

      • Heather

Agree about roots. Plus, I think that color is too brassy for her.

    • MilaXX

That is awful! The face/neck/body appear to be having some sort of ombre coloring thing going on. As much as I love a red lip, the makeup is too heavy and the dress color is so close to her skin tone I literally had to zoom in to see where one begins and the other ends.

    • kipper

I disagree with everyone – and I hated all the no color blobs on the Emmy RC – but its the fact that it is exactly her skin tone that makes this work – its called a ” nude dress ” – if it were off just a hue, it would not work – but I think this is beautiful – ( toe cleavage not included – she had to wear the nude pump with this, but a different one would have been better )

    • mjude

no color makes me so sad. because its cate I will give a 1/2 bow down.

    • LipstickForPigs

She hardly ever puts a foot wrong…but Jesus take the wheel those shoes are making MY feet hurt.

    • boweryboy

Is she wearing a dress or is there something wrong with her skin?

    • Laura Renee

      WHY SO MUCH SKIN TONE

I can’t even make out the dress on the model…

And poor Kate’s feet, I want to liberate and rub them with soothing creams and just hold them for a while. “Shh, it’ll be okay.”

    • Ediths_Head

I love her so much it pains me to say this, but, she looks like a pair of lips floating in the air.

    • Violentcello

She looks a bit … blanched, doesn’t she?

      • BrooklynBomber

Funny you should say that because when I saw this I wondered if she’s set to play Blanche DuBois and is doing advance promotion.

      • kimmeister

I guess she is trying to live up to her last name!

    • Amanda Welliver

Ow ow ow. Her poor feet.

    • Jessica Freeman

Tone on tone on tone, not even Cate can pull this shittery off.

    • iheartbuffy

so what color IS that dress? porcelain? cate-pink?

      • iheartbuffy

I add that her make-up is gorgeous, but we expect nothing less

    • joancarol

      She looks dead.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

She’s in costume as Courtney Love, right?

      • Imasewsure

But where’s the cigarette and bottle of Jack? Costume’s only half done

    • Sunraya

A column of nothing. No color. No pizzazz. Not even elegance. A big yeech. This pains me.

    • bellafigura1

I do love it, beige and matchy and all. What kind of makes it not work for me is the hair. I think if her hair were up, it would be one less beige thing. And yeah, ouchy feet.

    • rmp6y5

      Serving fashion ghost.

    • filmcricket

I don’t mind the ivory against her gorgeous skin, but the hem-length is bad, the shoes are worse, and the make-up is downright dreadful; that is “make-up gun” maquillage if I’ve ever seen it. Listen for the horse hooves, everyone: today, Rebel Wilson looked better than Cate Blanchett.

    • HobbitGirl

The dress loses something without all the floaty bits. I actually don’t mind that it’s all so pale — I find it rather striking — but I’m sad they made this into another sheath dress rather than the really romantic runway piece.

    • GillianHolroyd

I’m thinking that this would’ve presented better if the backdrop has been dark (and less busy, goes without saying). If the Event is in your honor and you don’t have a say in the decor, well, that’s sad.

    • frannyprof

      Too nude.

    • ewes_urn_aim

It’s a gala in your honor- and you (of all people) wear this?!?

    • ringthing

Clearly in the minority here. I don’t hate the dress since looking at the model, I believe it’s supposed to blend with the wearer’s skin tone; my first thought was “clown makeup”. The red lip is fine but those contoured cheeks and clumpy eyes aren’t worthy of her.

    • quiltrx

I wish she had done more with her hair, and done a softer lip. It appears she knew how badly the dress was washing her out, and went with ‘loud lips’ to try to brighten the face.

    • Joey Melliza

the runway version looked more interesting …

    • NMMagpie

Even with all the flaws, she is still freaking fabulous. Many folks would loooovvvvve to look like that on their worst days. Speaking for myself, of course. :)

    • SophieCollier

I wish she’d gone with the fluttery skirted version from the runway shot. Yes, the shoes look torturous and the nude color does nothing under those flashbulbs. Wouldn’t this have been fabulous in an ice blue or sage green?

    • tb

Without my glasses I thought she was buck-nekkid

    • H2olovngrl

Just no. Look, we all think she comes pretty close to Tilda levels of awesomeness, but this is awful. Her chicness, along with the Swintons and Mirrens of the world rely heavily on making it look effortless, like they just whipped on the first thing they saw in the closet yet because of their expert level of clothes wearing, it becomes instantly cool and stylish. This is a pretty serious fashion misstep, and I am going to have to agree with Annabelle up above and say that she has been floundering. She better Willis it the f*** up, because her style creds are seriously slipping.

    • Imasewsure

Wrong makeup, wrong dress, wrong shoes… and nothing hair… we all have bad days I guess

    • TAGinMO

She’s dressed in her own dead skin. Ew.

    • Qitkat

It’s stunning on the model in motion, but I hate it so much on Cate that I just want to pull my eyelashes out.

    • poggi

I don’t like it either but her decolletage looks very nice in this with very little support. I wonder if Cate, like Stacy Keibler from the other day, got mesmerized by her ability to challenge gravity and win.

      • MissWix

yes!!! my first thought was…how do her boobs look so amazing?? are they being held up by magic? I am half her age and have yet to master the strapless undergarment situation. no WAY she’s that shapely braless.

        • poggi

I know. It seems like she has to have something under there, but it looks so natural which is usually not the case with strapless bras. Maybe it’s those weird glue on bra things or a ring of power.

    • BrooklynBomber

      Bleah.

    • formerlyAnon

I think the dress is right on a tired trend for dull beige-ish lace which does nothing for her, (though it fits beautifully) and she needs to match the level of elegance/effort of her hair to the dress. If she really can’t be bothered then she should revert to the skinned back socialite’s pony tail.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

Put this on a brunette, maybe Linda Cardelini.

    • ConnieBV

      I think I’m blind. No.

    • lalahartma

      Milky.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

THIS?? This bland, colorless, shredded lace nightgown is what she wears to the NY Film Festival when they want to honor her?? Good gawdawmighty. Nothing—not even a sadistic, hungover, jealous and vindictive stylist who also removed all mirrors from Cate’s dressing area—can excuse this, or explain it.

    • another_laura

Oh dear. This is what she wore to gala tribute? To her? Eek. Somebody is failing our Cate, time to find some new style consultants.

    • kimmeister

I do love the delicate sleeves.

    • KirFla

Allrite, I’ll ask. Seriously, how do LadyStars walk in these shoes?

    • VioletFem

Where is she? I can’t see her!

    • Jacquelyn

She needs color somewhere besides the bright red lip. Also, looks like she had to squeeze her feet into those shoes.

    • Donna Tabor

It’s a little too soon for that ghost costume, Cate. Wait a few weeks, ‘kay?

    • e jerry powell

      That effing nude lace again.

    • HM3

      Zzzzz…

    • jen

I know the dress matches her skin but I love this on her. And her make up is perfection!

    • Jacqueline Wessel

All I see is makeup…way too much makeup for the rest of this look.

    • GorgeousThings

Man, I love me some Cate Blanchett, but this whole outfit is an EPIC FAIL. From the pinchy shoes to the lace that blends into her skin to the too-bright blush. I never thought I would see the day that I can’t stand to look at her.

    • travelgirl28

I think this is a big miss from head to foot. Her face looks clown-like with the bright red lips, the dress color is way too close to her own skin color, and her feet look positively angry about being in those shoes. I normally love her fashion choices, but not this time.

    • marlie

Oh, CATE. This is an amateur mistake. The (done-to-death) lace dress in a flesh tone? The unimaginative silly-putty pumps? This makes me seriously sad.

    • demidaemon

She looks so slinky and sexy here, like some goddess descending from on high. I totally approve.

Though, I do have a very minor, somewhat related point: For a night celebrating her, she seems to have gone a bit understated. Maybe she didn’t want to look egotistical, but I–if I was her stylist (IF ONLY!)–would have dressed her in balls to the walls style, personally.

    • Trickytrisha

I really want to find this look on her to be stunning, but it’s not getting there. The skirt has been altered to its detriment – the runway dress is lovely, this not so much. The shoes are a tragedy (maybe tragicomedy); she should know better.

I’m a fan of monotone dressing, of skin color blending with fabric, especially porcelain skin, but this is one instance where her makeup really does her no favors. Totally wrong lip color and depending on the lighting, her face looks either too white or too florid. Oh well, next time will be better, I’m sure.

    • bertkeeter

Makeup not flattering…makes her nose jump out at camera!

    • Cate

She looks like…someone’s crazy aging mother in some novel that takes place in 1910. She runs out of her Brooklyn flat in her flesh-toned slip and too much bright lipstick, trying to seduce the milkman. Not good.

      • ItAin’tMe

In fact, it is a perfect look for Blanche Du Bois. Good call.

    • kikisayshi

Any other color -*scratch that*- any COLOR would have looked so nice! I can’t even see the dress!

    • lrhoff

Did she show up in lingerie? I mean, it matches her skin tone perfectly…..which is nice for her looking completely washed out. Oh honey.

    • Fuchaforever

I would never wear a dress the color of my skin. What’s the point? I don’t understand why people do that.

    • ItAin’tMe

I think a look like this needs stockings. Sheer ones. They would help give her ankles a smoother look and help her feet slide into her shoes without looking so pinched.

    • livesarah

I wanted to say how much I hate that colour, but was distracted by the clown makeup.

    • Fannie Wolston

the hair is too sallow, the lips like the joker. Must be allergic to jewelry. Shoes look painful but she looks serene.

    • kathrineb

This is not the fab and daring Cate we know and love. It seems every actress has to do the skin-matching dress at some point, but why?

    • Gatto Nero

She’s still gorgeous, but why hack off the loveliest part of the dress? The makeup is overdone, and the shoes look agonizing. Usually her styling is so elegant and understated — I don’t understand.
