Carla Gugino in Dolce&Gabbana at the “All Is Lost” NY Premiere

Posted on October 09, 2013

We don’t care if it’s cheesy or a cliche or makes her look like she’s on the prowl:

Carla Gugino attends the premiere of “All Is Lost” during the 2013 New York Film Festival in Dolce&Gabbana.

And sure, the fabric looks a little cheap (which it probably isn’t) and the shoes are a really awful choice, but damn if the shape of this thing isn’t perfect for her. It’s a shame, because some real color here would have made her a knockout. As it is, everything matches her hair and her eyes, which is a style misstep that tends to make our eyelids twitch. Put this lady in a deep purple, pronto. Also: let’s all decide what she should do about her makeup. That’s what friends are for. And strangers on the internet.

  • Carla Gugino deserves good things.

    • Aurumgirl

Yes. And a far better make up artist.

      • If someone could smoke her eyes out a bit with deep aubergine eyeliner, her eyes would be practically glowing. And if that someone could have blotting papers and some powder in their kit, they would be head and shoulders above whoever did this look.

    • EveEve

The dress fits beautifully. I wish I had makeup advice, but that’s not my thing. Her gorgeous eyes and smile deserve to be played up though. And her hair is a disaster.

  • charlotte

Her face is as shiny as the average Fanning sister’s.

  • MilaXX

The dress is fine. Its the awful shoes and the hair color that are the problem. Like Ashley her hair is usually darker. The makeup would work if the hair was right. even if she needs a bit of powder to tone down the shine.

    • venusvelvet

Yes, the fuschia lipstick clashes with the auburn hair, and the eye makeup needs to be softened. The red hair tone brings out her green eyes, but kind of makes her look washed out otherwise, unless it’s just the lighting.

  • Dennis

I love that one of the girls from Troop Beverly Hills is getting work.

  • hughman

I say go Full Cher. Cat-eye glasses and a cardigan over her shoulders would really make this look.

    • schadenfreudelicious

That gives me a full on Edith Prickley visual, not that there’s anything wrong with that!

      • hughman

        Cher’s Laverne!

        • NYCGlamourpuss

I know both of those references! Yaay!

      • I Trick or Treated as Edith Prickley when I was seven. <3

        • schadenfreudelicious

You must have been the coolest 7yr old in the neighboorhood!

  • She’s always hot. Always.
What’s with the lighting at this event? Everyone looks washed out and harsh. Boo.

  • schadenfreudelicious

As a fellow “shiny forehead in photos” kind of gal, blotting papers are your friend…

    • Rhonda Shore

that and loose powder with a big brush…or a matte compact, mac makes a good one.

  • TrixieConQueso

It’s the lighting! The former post with Connie in it has similar shiny problems. Very unflattering. And both are such cute gals – bummer for them.

  • Lidia Starkova

Seems a little cougar to me. some edgy accessories would be great.. Is it botox or crazy lightning? She’s so super smooth and shiny.. She needs to be a bit bronzer and have some blush. And different lipstic, but I can’t decide on color.

    • charlotte

Cougar and leopard at the same time! Apparently that is called a pumapard.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

Half-drag is depressing. Full drag or not at all.

  • Trickytrisha

I’ve adored this woman since I saw her in the mid 90s miniseries,The Buccaneers, with Mira Sorvino and Cheri Lunghi. She’s got something special, but needs a better way to present herself maybe? Especially the makeup here… shiny, unflattering, and aging. Uncles are right (as always), the dress needs to be in something other than faux feline print.

    • majorbedhead

Oooh, I LOVED that mini series. I didn’t remember that was her.

  • neonseattle

This is cougar territory. She needs to be something cool and modern.

    • Imasewsure

I think that is what made Heidi’s animal print top so cute the other day… it was a modern breezy way of wearing a cougar (or a cheetah or a show leopard or whatever it was) and not becoming a Cougar in the process…

  • Imasewsure

I hate to say it but “women of a certain age” have to be really really careful about animal prints…tends to go “Cougars in Boca” even when they look slammin’ in it like she does.

    Hate the shoes

    • sagecreek

Yep. Actually, everyone needs to be careful with the animal prints. They go cheap so very easily.

    • dorothea_brooke

You say “Cougars in Boca” like it’s a bad thing! 😉

  • Belvane

I’d start with a change of hair color. Go darker, go redder, something that doesn’t exactly match her eyes.

    • alyce1213

Darker, definitely. She normally has dark brown hair, which looks much better on her.

    • GillianHolroyd

“I’d start with a change of hair color”

And stop with the botox. This is sad.

  • MichelleRafter

The leopard print matches her eyes (the brown & the black), which is what bugs me. Great fit though. Hate the shoes.

  • Sorry, I was watching Troop Beverly Hills the other day and I still can’t get over that she was one of the girls in the troop.

  • JDreesen

    huge leopard vagina.

    huge leopard vagina.

    huge leopard vagina.

[now is the part where i turn around and see if a huge leopard vagina manifested behind me in my bathroom mirror, aaaaaand…oops, nope….front of this dress..i’ll work on that for next time]

  • quiltrx

I’ve always really liked her. She looks pretty here!
As for the makeup…definitely some powder. Also her overall ‘face’ looks great for everyday but maybe needed a little more oomph for a premiere.

  • martha

She needs lipstick in a warmer color

  • TLJezebel

    Very flattering silhouette.

  • decormaven

The print design in the skirt is not becoming; perhaps a belt and different shoes could have pulled this off. This outfit does not do her justice.

  • bellafigura1

Like Connie Britton, she gets lots of leeway from me for serving up real-woman authenticity. Definitely not red-carpet perfect, but just seeing them makes my eyes feel better. Creased faces, quirky charm, awkward and a little bit out of control — still sexy.

  • a_liking

alternate solution: dye her hair a deep purple and keep the dress. 😉

  • Deedles

This whole thing reminds me of my mom and her friends doing the “Color Me Beautiful” stuff back in the 80s. Ms. Gugino is a winter who desperately wants to be a fall and by goddess, she’s going to do it with a bang. Auburn-dyed hair with matching eyebrows? Check. Neutral makeup? Check. Brown-toned animal print dress? Check. Jewel tones, STAT! She is SO lovely and I want better for her!

    • Heather

Omigod I remember that book! I poured over the pages with rare fascination. I’m a Spring.

      • bizarro

Hee hee! My mom was so into this in the 80s. I am a winter and I still curse that book because I don’t want to wear jewel tones.

  • carnush

Black stilettos, powder, a different lip color.

  • Clydette Wantland

    OMG, I love you guys!!

  • Diego!

Her haircolor matches some shades of the dress… I hate her make up too. Shoes so so, but the dress fits her like a glove. I don’t like animal print very much but this works for her.

  • merciblahblah

I think she is gorgeous, but like her better as a dark brunette. Something about her here reminds me of a younger Melanie Griffith, pre-plastic surgery. Anyone else see that?

  • I hate that dress on her. She needs more class, and leopard jersey ain’t it.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Her face is a little shiny, but I honestly love this look on her! Rock that leopard print, girl!

  • Shawn EH

    She’s a hot number!

  • hair and shoes a different colour, plus maybe some bracelets. But yeah, this is her dress. She should get it copied in different colours and fabrics

  • omg_dora

I love this dress. It could be styled more originally, but it’s a great dress. The draping over the chest is classy and pretty.

Based on this and Connie Britton’s pictures, it looks like the lighting in this event was really unflattering, and/or the place was really humid.
