Anne Hathaway in J. Mendel at the 2013 Pink Party

Posted on October 21, 2013

It’s just so terribly stressful to be invited to a party with a color in its name, don’t you find?  Actually, it’s stressful being invited to parties with names in them, period. Unless the name is something like “Fabulous People Getting Dressed Up and Having Drinks.” We half-considered (meaning Tom considered it for a moment and Lorenzo never considered it at all) adding a line to our wedding invites saying that the night had a color theme and all guests were required to dress for it. Then we were going to put “PSYCH!” on the back of the card. Too much trouble in the end, but Tom really wanted to write something like “The theme for the evening is Avocado & Aubergine, so please dress accordingly,” just to fuck with people. Turns out, Lorenzo has this silly idea about not fucking with people who are bringing you a stand mixer as a gift. Oh well.

Hit it, Annie:

Well, what else was she going to wear?

It’s simple, but it’s a style she can rock in her sleep. At first we weren’t sure if we were in love with the black accents, but then we saw her nails and we thought they pulled the look together somehow. We keep zeroing in on her shoes. We don’t think the shape is quite working for the look. Too round-toed or something. Or maybe it’s because the dress looks summer and the shoes look winter.

    • Diego!

I agree with the shoes guys! And the dress could have been a little bit tighter in the waist area too! She looks nice, I think she should let her hair grow again. I miss her Selina Kyle @TheDarkKnightRises ironed hair :P

    • shirab

I didn’t know you were getting married! Oh, to be a fly on the wall at that fabulous party (or an invited guest–a girl can dream…). Mazel tov!

      • Jackie4g

TLo announced (OK, quiety whispered) of their marriage during the Fashion Week posts. You’ve been away if you missed all of us rejoicing with and for them from Cyberspace. Today, Oct 21st, gay marriage is now legal in NJ! Gov. Ghristie lost that one. Hooray!

        • shirab

That slipped by me somehow. Very good news! And hooray for NJ!

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Meh. It’s Monday and I’m looking at this from a doctor’s office lobby. But I’m not digging this. I’m ready for a hair change, the dress is terribly boring and more than a little twee. There’s a way to give pink and edge, but this isn’t it.

      • kmk05

I’m just glad it isn’t pink and leather *shudders*. My problem with it is the shape of the dress, which is a little boxy… actually, that’s untrue, I am not sure what my problem is with this. All parts of it are perfectly serviceable: the hair is fine, the makeup is fine, the dress is fine, the shoes are okay. But put together, they are singularly underwhelming. Like you said, she looks ‘meh’.

She tried ‘edge’ with those TF boots last year. I’ll be happy if she doesn’t try it again!

        • Targettaste

“serviceable” is a good description, but probably not what she was going for.

          • kmk05

But how disappointing! Even though everything is ‘okay’, the result isn’t actually ‘okay’.

        • Mary229

The shape is totally boxy and I think the only reason it works at all is because she’s tall and it’s short on her. I like this on Anne but it would be terrible on anyone shorter.

      • Glam Dixie

Agreed, plus the hem length is unflattering to her legs and the winged eye makeup isn’t really her friend. Hope you feel better soon.

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Like Anne, I have a hooded lid and an almond shaped eye, I have yet to find a way to make the winged eye flatrering. I doubt I ever will. Like Anne, I occasionally attempt it anyway.

    • filmcricket

The runway version is obviously way funkier, and I dislike the seam across the boobs. Also see what you’re saying about the shoes. Still and all, she took a Pepto-pink dress and made it chic, and I love that she hasn’t grown her hair out yet. Well played, Annie.

      • Mary229

I think her hair is super cute. Though, I admit I wouldn’t mind seeing her with a chic bob. Wouldn’t she look pretty like that? (But I agree. She has stuck to the short hair which, in a way, helps her “own” it as opposed to it being just for a role.)

    • http://www.dogsdotcom.blogspot.com/ Plink

Is it just me, or does she look a skosh awkward in this hem length?

      • mshesterp

I don’t think it’s doing her legs any favors at all, either the color of the dress (because she’s got a pinkish skin tone, something I’m quite familiar with) or the length. She looks great from the neck up, that’s it.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Yes. But, is it just me or did you just post that so you can use the word skosh? :-)

        • http://www.dogsdotcom.blogspot.com/ Plink

Here’s a little bouquet for you: skosh, skosh, skosh, skosh, skosh, skosh, skosh, skosh, skosh, skosh…now don’t you feel better? Skosh on!

          • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

That’s like rain in the desert….

    • Billie_Dawn

Not bad, but she has no shape in this. It would have been better as a more fitted dress.

Love the nails, though, and I’m still glad that she ditched the severe blonde hair.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Yeah, the shoes really bring it down. Maybe something in a warm brown tone?

      • Jackie4g

Or even a deep blue. I think I’d have liked any dark color, perhaps a charcoal grey or ink navy or, as you say, brown. There’s something very 50s about the pink and black combo. I like the idea of the high contrast, just not the starkness of the black. I do think the hem is too short, and the lace looking inset right at crotch level is particularly taxing, but the dress needed something inset to break the line, so I understand. Ann looks nice and youg again, so that’s a plus for the pink team.

    • Apocalipstick Now Redux

Being of the very pale variety, I can tell by the skin tone of her legs that she is freezing her ass off in those photos. She’s dying to wrap herself in a blanket and sip some hot cider. If she were a little less cold, and a little more tan, I’d like the dress so much more. The shoes are 100 kinds of awful.

      • ringthing

Yes. I know stockings are considered dated, but something on her obviously ice cold legs would have been more flattering, or maybe wearing something more fall than spring. She has great coloring for a deeper, more jewel toned shade of pink.

    • Latin Buddy

Pitty the girl didn’t learn her lesson from her Oscar’s disaster. This is a fugly satiny pink dress…and it’s puckery

      • YoungSally

I think the “puckers” may be in the textile — unlike the leathery runway dress — this one looks like a silk dupoini where the sheen can look like “texture”

    • marlie

Happy Monday, TLo and bitter Kittens!

I think Annie looks cute, though the dress is definitely more spring-y the way she’s wearing it. I like how the black accessories “edge” it up a bit. Also, the seam across the bust is hitting her a little funny. But she would have looked OUTSTANDING in the darker (leather?) runway version.

    • Little_Olive

Bright, summery colors with severe black is always a NO for me. And that color does nothing for her. And I hate the embellishment on the bottom.

Sorry, Annie. I’m actually not against you per se.

    • Katesymae

This is the spot where we talk about how dark her hair is and how thin her eyebrows look and speculate about what kind of part this could be for. Aaaannnnd, go!

    • nannypoo

She can look a lot better than this. The dress is shapeless and unflattering. The length is wrong for her legs and the shoulders are too wide. This hairdo is not flattering either, and the shoes are wrong with the dress. Both bracelets are nice but too small to make an impact. The only thing that’s really working here is her lipstick. She usually wears something matte that makes her lips look dry and sort of mushy. This little bit of shine is nice and the color is pretty. Oh, and she has nice eyebrows.

      • steeg of their own

It’s not nearly as shapeless on the model though. If you look at it, I think Anne’s wearing it in a size too large which makes it look like a sack. Not often that you see Hollywood err on the side of too big.

    • Loola234

I believe she should have deployed opaque black tights…and maybe booties?
Does her hair seem darker than normal?
The head shot make her face look extremely round (but that could be my monitor)
      She has a great smile…

    • SewingSiren

I LOVE parties with themes. You can go a little or a lot, but at least you have an idea of what to dress like. I also like invitations that fuck with you a little. Like with Avocado & Aubergine, I’m already thinking about it. Then I turn over the invite and go awww, pout.

    • JasmineAM

I love short hair, but short hair is not good at all for Anne.

    • Judy_S

You guys getting a lot of use out of that stand mixer? Guacamole, eggplant caviare?

    • ewes_urn_aim

It’s fitting her weird in the boobage area.

    • Dhammadina

I think she looks adorable. And are those shoes mesh? They appear to pick up on the different/see-through band of the dress, and that works. And makes them non-winter, to me.

    • ashtangajunkie

I do not love that particular pink on her. I do love my stand mixer, however.

      • MoHub

Maybe it’s my monitor, but it’s reading more salmon than Pepto/Barbie pink.

        • ashtangajunkie

Oh, interesting. It is decidedly hubba bubba on mine.

    • RussellH88

I don’t really like the color. It’s like she’s going as a bottle of Pepto for Halloween.

    • steeg of their own

Is it just me, or does that dress look about one size too big for her?

I like the dress better in the red wine color on the runway, but for a party where the only choice was ‘pink’, the look isn’t bad on her. I just think ultra-girly pink is very much not her comfort zone when it comes to nice dresses. Even her lipstick seems to know it: that is a shade for a deeper shade of dress. So props to Anne for making the best of a difficult theme, but I wish she’d worn the original red dress to a different party.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

This is retro 1967. Short shifts and tent dresses with Sassoon hair. In other words, this is what Anne looks like to me. Nothing new. The slight V-neck isn’t flattering here.

However, I like that she is rocking this color, and she isn’t out-doing everybody. She simply looks nice and flirty.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

I love her short hair – don’t cave to the pressure, Annie! Not cray about the dress/shoes. She looks like she’s kind chilly too.

    • Janet B

I don’t really like the dress on her.

A summer dress in October is silly.
How many men show up at these events wearing summer suits? Seersucker? Linen?

      • MilaXX

please, we’d be happy if they didn’t show up in scuffed shoes and jeans

    • Stella Zawistowski

Sorry T, I’m with Lo on this one (although it does sound like fun, doesn’t it?). Though, putting “aubergine and avocado” on your invitations might have resulted in at least one awesome Carmen Miranda-esque getup.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

She looks cute but I wish the dress were better fitted. That seam across her crest is at an awkward place, the neckline is too high and so is the hem. Pretty face though.

      • Shawn EH

I think all the awkward parts of the dress are on purpose (the model has all the same “faults”); they’re the only thing giving such a shift/sack dress interest. Anne is rocking it, but the shoes are too girly or something. Time to break out the plastic Louboutins, maybe.

    • MilaXX

I dislike the shoe for the all the reasons you mentioned. The dress I don’t mind so much.

    • Angie Stoner

The problem with the shoes is that for this look / shoe, the vamp is too high. Looks geriatric.

    • boweryboy

My eyes were immediately drawn to her shoes as well.

The dress is so miminal that it appears hard edged. It becomes an incongruous juxtapostion when paired with round toed shoes. A sandal or a pointy toed pump would’ve worked better.

I hate the lace strip but she looks good, though.

    • GillianHolroyd

I do not like the placement of that dart which makes the bodice look like it is too tight across her bust, then the dress is weirdly slack between her bust and her hips. The v-neck looks like she is being strangled. Bad fit.

I’m glad she’s kept the short hair but I like the layered cuts she sported last year over this mod style.

    • Sunraya

Boring, simple shift. I don’t get why designers get if bucks for things a relatively decent 14 year old could design and sew.

    • Aaminah Khan

Doesn’t that eye makeup make her look tired?

    • Samantha Klein

She looks like she’s going as Michelle Williams for Halloween, and, um, she has a completely different body. So no.

    • msdamselfly

She seems more likeable here besides looking good

    • SugarSnap108

Pepto Bismol in dress form. Agree with you on the shoes.

    • sagecreek

I guess it’s the photo lighting, but I didn’t even realize it was leather until I saw the model pic.

      • marlie

I’m not convinced that Anne’s dress is leather. But the runway version certainly is.

        • sagecreek

Ah, you’re right. It says right there in the caption that it’s crepe. Well, leather would have helped.

          • marlie

Heh. I didn’t fully read the caption myself. :P

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

She looks really cute. I miss her long hair, however.

    • CeeQ

I like it but the neckline is not agreeing with me.
I’m all for messing with your wedding guests! Come on Lo! It’ll be HILAR.

    • Jess White

That dress is for women who don’t have perfect bodies.

    • Sadie-Ann

The top is a weird shape for me. The high V just looks heavy or something.

    • http://www.momforless.com Crystal

      It’s a pillowcase.

    • ovarB

The world needs more Avocado and Aubergine in it.

      • sagecreek

You clearly did not grow up in the 70s :)

        • ovarB

          LOL!!

    • Ros

Neither the colour or the neckline are doing her any favours.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Her hair is too black. Get some rich brown back in there.

    • Mary229

I wouldn’t like this “shapeless” shift on a different body type but it works on her tall, thin frame. On anyone shorter and with more meat, it would not be a good look.

    • megohd

Not loving this at all. Normally, she looks radiant, but here she looks exhausted! Dress is too short and it doesn’t flatter her.
Am I out of the loop–is she pregnant? Or maybe she’s just beat up from people hating her.

      • bellafigura1

I’m thinking pregnant too. Her face looks like it’s changed shape a bit …

    • Chase

I think she’s too old for this look. The shapeless minidress only really works on the very young and very thin. If you don’t bear a resemblance to 60’s-era Twiggy, this is just not going to fly.

    • kat89

She looks OK. Not fabulous or anything. I thought she would have grown out that hair by now. Not loving it. I don’t think it really does anything for her.

      • Not applicable

agreed. and what’s with the smug bitchface…?

    • jw_ny

I’d like this on Annie even if it weren’t October/Breast Cancer awareness month…it’s a cute dress and totally her style, and also good color on her.

    • Lily-Rygh

I don’t love this or anything, but it’s wicked refreshing to see a ladystar who isn’t standing like she has to pee!

    • AndreaSkates

I ABHOR the shape of this dress, which she totally favors, and which I think looks like a too-short sack. The proportions just look boxy. However, this color is divine on her, and I wish she’d wear it more. It makes her absolutely glow.

    • quiltrx

It sort of looks like a mock-up that you use to see if the actual dress is going to fit. Except it’s pink.

    • Reality TV Casting

shoes are not great dont love the textile swap and how could we not point out that this is the worst shade of pink she could possibly choose; shes completely washed out.., and speaking of OUT this look is out out out

    • bertkeeter

I just hit the SNOOZE alarm!

    • Joanie

I think she needed hose to help the splotchy leg syndrome

    • e jerry powell

Why didn’t she wink at the camera? That hairstyle is practically BEGGING to be winked from under!

    • twilightgirlportland.com

Definitely meh. Nothing new for her. Nice that she is looking more healthy and not bone skinny.
