Amanda Peet at the “Nebraska” Premiere

Posted on October 09, 2013

We love the idea of a lady rocking the pants and the chic overcoat on the red carpet. There are all kinds of red carpets, which allow for an entire range of styles, yet most ladystars and their stylists default to cocktail dresses – or gowns, if they’re feeling ambitious. It’s so limiting.

On the other hand…

Amanda Peet attends the premiere of “Nebraska” during the 2013 New York Film Festival at Alice Tully Hall in New York City.

We think if you’re going to do a look like this when you know you’re going to be photographed, it requires a little more thought and polish than what’s on display here. Let’s break this down.

Love the coat, love the bag. Together they make a great foundation for a look. But the shirt is wrinkled and drab-looking, the pants are badly shaped and the shoes don’t go with them. A simple white blouse, slimmer-cut black pants, and a far more elegant shoe than that (possibly even a flat or an oxford). Alternately, a full boot. That’s how you do it. Or at least, that’s how we’d do it.

Her looks have been so terrible lately.

    • SassieCassy

      her emmys look, rite? yeeesh

this isnt bad to me. she is going for nyc intellectual. and missing.

    • llism

Her looks have *always* been terrible — check out the GFY archive. She has been very consistent in her, um, “fashion.”

      • padma sallah

        Yes to this.

I can’t honestly remember a time where she ever wore something that looked good.

        • fauxfatale

It’s really too bad because she’s gorgeous and has a great figure for clothes.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

At least she did her hair and makeup this time.

totally! She is such a beautiful woman.. I….I just don’t get it. Maybe she feels bloated?

  • Allie Carter

I love her shoes so much. I am deeply unfabulous.

    • Sobaika

I like them too, just not with this look.

  • RussellH88

It looks a bit Bag Lady, doesn’t it? Like homeless Diane Keaton.

    • MoHub

Precisely. Annie Hall was my first reaction.

  • Diego!

Everything here looks three sizes more than her real size! I love her shoes but I agree something glitter-y would have been better.

  • Ginny Ellsworth

Is it just me or does she look like a Kennedy?

    • Katesymae

She’s been looking super Maria Shriver-y lately, IMHO.

  • Generally, I love her. She’s a granola mom, with Gyllenhaalesque aspirations to give off the perfect blend of sexy, earthy, above it all, thrifty, with fabulous pieces mixed in. So yes, the above appearance is pretty right on for her.

    • mshesterp

Me too–I just wish she didn’t try to REJECT her beauty so much with terrible clothing. Her fashion doesn’t seem like a mix of earthy/thrifty/sexy, it just looks terrible. And yet, I always find her charming in shows and things. I’m a big Peet fan.

  • hughman

I love her and she has always been my favorite professor in the Women’s Studies Department.

  • MilaXX

Dear lord I wore that in high school & I graduated in 1981, and might I add I think I may have paired that look with babydoll ankle socks. *smh*

    • mjude

oh girl, I was all about the ankle socks! love the coat!

      • MilaXX

        thought I was hot stuff!

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Is it wrong that I laughed when I saw the first picture? She’s not even posing like she wants to sell the look.

  • Total Diane Franklin in “Better Off Dead” look. Also, I have an Amanda Peet crush (she was amazing in “Isn’t She Great?”).

  • Mudskipper

When I was young and worked in a cell biology lab, my dear husband used to say about some looks – It’s OK to go and dissect mice in this outfit. This is exactly what I would say about her shirt and pants. It’s OK to dissect mice in this.

    The coat is great.

    • Imasewsure

      Perfect analogy

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Why is she wearing her Dad’s clothes?

  • Garcia Loca

This is what the Fug Girls refer to as “scrolldown fug”.

  • boweryboy

She looks like a crazy homeless lady who has an Amex Black Card.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Are we sure she knew she was going to be photographed?

  • Danielle

Those shoes are wounding my soul.

    • decormaven

My grandmother had those shoes back in the 1930s.

  • Kent Roby

She was so awesome in Igby Goes Down (over 10 year ago, wow), but now she’s all Fashion Sense Goes Down. I want more from her, both in her career and her style.

  • I love that coat.

  • Qitkat

While I like this in theory, I think the Queen of Thrift Shopping (MG) could give her some tips.

  • marlie

This isn’t so bad, for the regular-but-quirky girl with an office job.

  • Imasewsure

Maybe she thought she was going to Nebraska not to the film opening for Nebraska? Looks like she was planning to drive too… yipes

  • elemspbee

i love the shoes by itself, and i see your point about it with/against the entire look.

  • crash1212

It’s Amanda Peet, so I’m thinking if the pants were full length and/or perhaps skinnier in cut, this would be a total win for her. Of course, if she’d followed T&Lo suggestions, this could’ve been a WERQ. Love the coat. Love the bag. Love the shoes, just not with those pants.

  • GillianHolroyd

oh wow. It’s like she thought pushing up the sleeves would make it more stylish.

    Head to toe no.

  • Don’t let Alexa Chung be your muse sweetie, you are a grown-up.

  • Rhonda Shore

Girl, those are not your pants!

  • VicD

Pin the hair up and you have me, walking the dog, in the morning… and that tends NOT to be my most fabulous moment of the day. (OK – walking the dog but maybe not in those heels)

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Oh, no no no. This is an “End of the Laundry Cycle, and It’s All I Had That Was Clean” look.

  • Kelly

I know I’m a child of the 70s, a time when your bell-bottoms had to brush the ground or they were considered too short. To me, ankle-skimming bell-bottoms will always scream, “pathetic flood-water pants!” They need to be tapered if they’re going to end at the ankle, imo. Otherwise you look like William Shatner on the bridge of the Enterprise. Sans girdle and toupe.

Adore the coat. And I like the shoes, too, just not with this.

  • quiltrx

Yeah, this is coming off a bit too “sorry, couldn’t get away from work” for me.
Hair and makeup look pretty good, I’ll give her that.

  • oohsparkley!

I think they lost her luggage at the airport.

  • E. D.

I don’t mind the shoes, but that shirt is a no-go.

  • bellafigura1

I love it, just the wrong occasion for it.

  • LaSylphide

The shirt looks like she forgot to change out of her pajama top. A tailored trouser would be better with the shoes. Love the coat, and love how the gray brings out her eyes.

  • demidaemon

I would also say the proportions of the shirt and pant are off. The shirt is too long, which makes the pants look two short, which makes Ms. Peet look strange.

  • We rarely see a fashionable woman wearing flats, even with pants, which is a shame. Flats are making a return; I hope it’s a big one.

Amanda is so stunning with a great personality. She can’t know how beautiful she is. She is extremely talented, too. (Drama: SVU, Comedy: The Whole Nine Yards). She seems to lie low. We don’t hear about her.

These clothes are dreadful. I don’t remember seeing her on a talk show or away from an acting role, where she is dressed in flattering clothes. I HATE the eyeliner on the pink interior lower lid. It makes a woman look skanky. And even Amanda’s big beautiful eyes look smaller, lined this way.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

I concur with all remarks above.

  • Tafadhali

I love the coat but the pants look like the strange man capris all the officers wear in original flavor Star Trek.

  • that bag! I want that bag! Her hair and face, too, but that’s probably a longer shot.

  • She looks like Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club.

  • Rebecca Clifford

The pants have got to go, imo.
