Allison Williams in Calvin Klein at the Marie Claire’s Power Women Lunch

Posted on October 31, 2013

We’ll give her the coat, which is gorgeous, but MAN does she dress like a middle-aged woman.

“Girls” star Allison Williams attends Marie Claire’s Power Women Lunch in New York City in Calvin Klein.

Not that there’s anything wrong with dressing like a middle-aged woman, so long as you do it with some style, but we’ll never not feel that dressing decades over your age is something of a mistake. Besides, this same outfit on a woman twice Allison’s age would still have us saying, “Honey, let’s find some way to freshen this look up a bit, mkay?” It’s bad enough she can’t seem to dress her age, but does she have to be so dull on top of it? If you want to look like a 50-year-old at 24, fine. But at least shoot for a fabulous 50-year-old.

Sweetie, you’re rich, famous, thin, pretty and young. The only guarantees in life are that at least two of those qualities aren’t going to last forever. Have some fun with your clothes. You’ll regret it later if you don’t.

  • FLOTUS would rock this. Although she would wear better pants and shoes.

    • Nicholas

… but if she did, she would rock them.

    • tereliz

Also a belt. Probably. That’s what my ESP is telling me.

    • Danielle

EXACTLY my thoughts. Shelly O would look slammin’ in this coat.

  • melanie0866

    Coat + sandals = FAIL

    • AnneElliot

My thought exactly!! Honey, if it’s cold enough for a coat, put on some fabulous boots.

    • not applicable

Thank you!! A huge pet peeve!!!

  • Future trophy wife. Again.

  • Adrianna Grężak

Why? WHY? This looks like the corporate-work clothes my mom bought for me when I graduated college, along with nude panty hose. She really should’ve worn a skinny pant.

  • Are there any Kennedy’s left to marry? I feel like she’s gunning hard to be Mrs. Famous Politician.
And honey, if you need that coat, I don’t need to see your toes.

    • alyce1213

Well, Michael Skakel just got out. Eeeeuuuw — I can’t believe I wrote that.

(He’s not really a Kennedy anyway.)

      • AnneElliot

I think he’s on trial again. Ew.

  • hughman

I thought she was going as Meredith Viera for Halloween.

    • Julie

    • cackle!!!!

    • RL McGruder

    • decormaven

Bowing down to your observation. Most excellent!

  • JasmineAM

    So. Much. Blandness.

  • alyce1213

Now’s the time to deploy navy blue — with that beautiful bright orange coat. White and frumpy? Why???

  • jjjoy

she looks like a politician’s wife. i’ve seen some cool girls in their mid-20s rock this kind of tailored look Allison is trying to go for, but it requires more attitude and some sexiness. allison has neither.

    • alyce1213

I think she’s sexy, in a Seven Sisters Colleges kind of way.

    • tereliz

I think it requires a hint of edge, like spiky bracelets or skull stud earrings and BAMF shoes. Search for the NYFW day four post (Williams at DVF). Accessories and shoes like those would have made a world of difference here, but she seems to default to boring black or putty pumps. Which might have been a step up from the sandals she’s wearing.

  • MilaXX

You could paste Nina Garcia’s head on this entire look and the only comment it would garner is, “Nina looks lovely in that.”
    Man, this chick is dull.

  • anneland

Sure… it’s not fabulous. But I don’t think she is going to look back and regret looking lovely in a simple, clean way in her 20’s.

    Orange is the New Zzzzzzzz….

Sheesh, am I the only one who was wondering when we would get the TLounge? Brain fart. And I don’t even care that much about the All Stars. I guess I’m just so used to it to hang out and dish about our week.

This seems to have been coat week here. It’s a pretty color.

    • Yeah, I miss the Thursday lounge, but the newly opened Weekend TLounge was pretty alright. I enjoyed being able to pop in all weekend and see new comments and feeling like the floor was open for whatever.

      • Sarah

Yeah, only thing was that I don’t check much over the weekend because I’m not usually working, and TLo is my favorite way to waste taxpayer money. On my own time, I usually don’t go online much. (I’m too busy getting my various vices on.) I didn’t even see that the uncles opened TLounge last Friday until Monday morning. I will be more vigilant this week, but I was hoping we’d get a little “this is what the guest judge is wearing” post or something tonight. Oh well, I’ll reserve my comments on tonight’s jackassery for tomorrow.

  • pattyw

As someone who, I guess, qualifies as “middle age,” I take offense. I wouldn’t wear a single item she has on.

    • LJCdoc

Ditto. She could have stolen those pants from my mother, who is a whole person who can drink past middle age.

    • MoHub

I’d wear that, but just to knock around in and certainly not for an event.

  • steeg of their own

The coat is not gorgeous, it is gross. It’s a pretty color, but it makes her look like a barge.

    • AmeliaEve

The straight cut through the torso is bad enough, but the bulky sleeves are just horrible.

  • crash1212

That outfit without the pants she chose to wear but WITH a pair of skinny cigarette pants would be kick ass. Love the coat.

  • BPlease

I feel she should ship this look off to Lee Radziwill or Deeda Blair or Carmen Dell’Orefice — I can’t imagine a fiftysomething like Angela Bassett or Michelle Pfeiffer wanting this look, as it’s too aging!

  • Caitlin

Navy blue cigarette pants, kickass leopard heels. Still that simple clean look she likes, with some personality

  • ikillplants

Not loving the new hair, either.

  • cocohall

Surely there is a middle ground between Miley and Matronly? We don’t need to see star pasties on your nipples, but doll, you are never going to be this young and perky again. Enjoy it a little.

  • quiltrx

I’ll say it again–these events should pre-tell the RC’ers what color the backdrop is. With the coat off she almost literally disappears.

  • sarah

I should be the middle aged woman in that coat.

  • Cognitive.Dissonance

Allison’s mom should invest Ina bio-metric lock for her closet.

  • she looks like a girl who has totally bought into her parents’ world. charity league and all that. myself, i ran the opposite direction as fast as i could.

  • Tatiana Luján

Those pants and those shoes are ugly.

  • This is definitely something I’d wear as a 50-y-o woman, but I’d add some jewellery.

  • Hannah

obviously this isn’t well tailored and she doesn’t really have the sass or the style to pull this off completely but a simple look isn’t necessarily boring. she’s a beautiful girl and she seems to like clean lines and have a minimalist aesthetic. honestly i think it’s refreshing. this doesn’t read middle-aged to me. i’m not saying i’ve loved everything she’s ever worn but her choices tend to be a nice change from the froofy, complicated crap that most celebrities wear. not every look needs a pop of color in the shoe or tighter pants or a different colored top or whatever. i agree with most of your opinions but i’m seeing kind of a theme of declaring anything that’s minimal to be boring.

    • kategs

I have to agree. Clean simple elegant lines are not automatically middle aged or boring.

  • What you guys said. And again? Jewelry?

  • RedRaven617

My first thought was “I could rock that look!” 2nd was the realization that I’m 55 and she’s not. No sweetie, just no.

  • tereliz

You can see her feet sticking out of her trousers. So she’s got that going for her.

  • I like the minimalism of the look. Maybe it’s a bit old for her, but the outfit has an elegant spareness to which I respond very positively.
    Don’t like the sandals.

  • RoseJB

    I’m a twenty-something who dresses like a forty-something. I thought it was chic 🙁

  • Sara Brams-Miller

Cropped skinny pants and some fun jewelry and this would be AWESOME

  • Eve

Holy shit, where can i buy this coat?

  • sagecreek

If you’re going to wear a coat, maybe ditch the sandals, and vice versa.

  • MannahattaMamma

Plus hem your pants or wear taller shoes.

  • Madeline Zappala

It’s so funny because although here she comes off as so conservative and very similar to her character on Girls, she often guest stars in this podcast I listen to ( jake and amir’s if I were you show) and she is extremely funny and not at all conservative seeming.
