Alan Cumming at the House of Versace NY Screening

Posted on October 07, 2013

While we much prefer his Suited Dandy style, we’d be the very last people to criticize a boy for getting his gayboy style on every one in a while. You air out those nipples, Alan. It’s venue-appropriate, we say.

Alan Cumming attends “House of Versace” screening hosted by Marvista Entertainment and Lifetime with The Cinema Society at MOMA in New York City.

Just don’t expect us to co-sign on this one. Fly your fashion freak flag at a Donatella biopic red carpet if you want to; we applaud it. But we aren’t so blind that we can pretend your “Fuck it, I’ll just wear all THIS” outfit actually looks good. Fun, yes. Good, no.

But where else do you were this? It’s the perfect example of Dressing For The Event.

    • gabbilevy

      Well, you wouldn’t.

    • marlie

I think that’s the Uncles’ point.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Indeed-an appropriate airing of the nips at schlocky TV movie about Versace.

    • edacious

Da club girl! To da club! ;D

  • RussellH88

A see through shirt and a jiffy pop jacket gets a no from me.

  • Janet B

The jacket is the clunker here, the rest seems appropriate and a nice change of pace.

    • calimon

I mostly agree. But more so, all three pieces belong separately – each in another outfit entirely. i.e, I would have preferred nicer slacks and belt with the shirt.

  • Laurieandclaire

He’s like my male HBC. I love him in any of the crazy shit he comes up with!

    • Clueless_Jock

I like it and I think it works on him.

  • Rand Ortega

    Uh…hmmmm…

  • marlie

I love the pants, and I could get on board with the shirt (JUST for this event), but I hate the jacket.

But he’s Alan Cumming, and he can do no wrong in my book.

  • In_Stitches

That jacket just looks so flimsy, had it been made of stiffer stuff, it might have worked. As is, it looks like he stole Professor Trelawny’s finest clubbing blouse.

    • Kimbolina

Yes, flimsy is the word. It looks like it’s made of that cheapo flammable fabric they use for Halloween costumes.

    • JasmineAM

I chortled at the Trelawny reference. Fantastic!

  • hughman

It’s very “Back to the Future” lab coat where your mini-cooper transports you to a Donna Summer concert in 1978.

    • Daisy Walker

I’d like to take that ride.

      • boweryboy

        Make room for me!

        • BKagainwiththesweatpants

Count me in–I’m tiny, so I could still fit in the Mini!

    • decormaven

Pop in the 8-track with “I Feel Love” on it and I’m there!

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

      toot toot haaaay beep beep!

  • bellafigura1

See, no. If he wore that shirt under a gorgeous suit with killah shoes, I would be bowing to him. But there are too many trends crammed into this look, it’s distracting. The shirt rules.

  • Qitkat

Alan Cumming and duck face- too funny!

    • mshesterp

The face in that 2nd picture is fantastic. Love it so hard.

  • Jessica Freeman

Is it weird I find the shoes the most offensive part of this outfit?

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I think the belt is worse!

  • Fanny_Trollope

Everything about him is adorable. I love it.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

His hair looks nice all fluffy like that. I can’t agree with any of the other choices.

    • Jessica Freeman

I am loving his hair as well as the glasses. Scroll down fug for sure.

    • marlie

      I LOVE his hair!

  • GillianHolroyd

I prefer the Alan Cumming who introduces Masterpiece on PBS.

    • majorbedhead

      Yes, me too.

    • Fanny_Trollope

Not me. I’m on Team Bad Boy Alan. I saw him years ago in Cabaret, and he gave delicious new meaning to dissipated and lost.

      • Derek_anny

His performance of Mein Herr is one of my favourite versions. Mostly for his modifications to crossing the continent of Europe.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I like to imagine he bought this years ago, encased it in glass that said, “Only Open for Campy, Versace Occasions” with a little hammer on a chain dangling next to it, teasing him and collecting dust until…

  • MilaXX

It shouldn’t but work, but some how it does. However, this is Alan’s look and his look alone.

  • uprightcitizen

For me, it’s the boots and overly-high cuff on the pants that ruin this. If he had on some sleek black pointy loafers, a black belt, and the pants cuffed but not in preparation for a flood, this whole thing would have been a lot more more chic, and then the shirt and jacket would have just looked fun. I DO love the Paul Lynde/Gene Rayburn glasses. Those, on a man under 80, are kind of rocking.

    • BKagainwiththesweatpants

I just spit out my coffee (re: the glasses). You are my new god/goddess. Bowing down!

  • Anita Karenin

I see what he did there.

  • lobsterlen

“The airing of the nipples.” I like it. Sounds seasonal like the swallows returning or the running of the bulls. Now that its autumn time to air the nipples before the cold weather sets in.

    • http://www.facebook.com/susan.carson.378 Susan Carson

      love. witty. great analogy.

  • boweryboy

No worries. I’ll see to it that he’s out of those clothes immediately.

  • MiriamMc75

Oh god I love him sooo much. He can do no wrong in my eyes. Love! Him!

  • Kate Andrews

I love it and will cosign until the end of time. You go, Eli Gold!

  • Katesymae

The color/feel of the blazer and jeans feel like a mismatch. Sleeker pants and no Lumberjack Dad belt/shoes and this would’ve been a winner.

    • Kate Andrews

Where do I get me a Lumberjack Dad?

      • Katesymae

I feel like you could build a scarecrow, put AC’s belt and shoes on it, leave it out overnight… and in the morning, voilà! A real live, Lumberjack Dad!

  • Kent Roby

Oddly, because this is AC, I’m fine with the mesh shirt and the lamé jacket, but find the pants/belt/shoes wrong. I’d prefer black leather pants with a bright or metallic shoe with this, just to fully commit with the costume aspect of the outfit.

  • ThaliaMenninger

He’s back in his Cheeky Monkey gear.

  • E2_Remote

Ok, I can accept that the tinfoil jacket, lumberjack boots, and mosquito net shirt don’t really work together. But that face with the glasses, LOVE.

  • Trickytrisha

Aww, I adore him so much he gets a pass. He could wear a ratty bathrobe and still be more interesting and stylish than 90% of male celebs today. (omg, I’ve turned into a fangurl!)

  • anonylind

don’t care. still love him, no matter what.

  • Chaiaiai

Can we call this “Pulling a Cumming”? PLEASE GAY UNCLES??!?

  • another_laura

I think it’s the jeans that are the problem. If you’re going with mesh shirt and shiny jacket – is it jeans? No.

  • elemspbee

North of the neck, nice. south of the waist–pants and shoes, helz ya. overall, sadly: parachute deflating.

  • manina

He looks like the perfect guest at “Casa Casuarina”

  • Sif

It’s fun, attention-seeking, and gay. The hair, blazer, and jeans compliment each other quite well without taping into Nina Garcia’s “matchy matchy” zone. Oh, and I can’t resist a nice sheer shirt on a slim man. It’s sexy, not tacky.

  • Miss WKS

He always has that “yeah- I-may-be-a-skinny-little-dude- but- I’ve-got-a-really-big-dick” smirk on his face…

  • teensmom99

Well, I did laugh out loud when I scrolled down. I think that’s what Cummings was going for so I’ll call it a win.

  • Allie Carter

Oh my goodness… Alan Cumming is the gay Ira Glass!

  • Agador Spartacus

All I can see is Will Ferrell as Harry Caray with those glasses.

    • E2_Remote

So true, LOL… I still love him though, even if I did get more than a whiff of Elliott Gould’s character in Ocean’s 11 when I first saw this post.

  • Lily-Rygh

    I heart him.

  • formerlyAnon

He, personally remains adorable. This ensemble is fine for an odd day of silliness, but doesn’t really come together for me.

And he proves the advantage of having feline/canine children: nobody rolled their eyes and groaned “Daaaaad, you can’t be serious” as he was leaving the house. (Though any cats may have viewed him disdainfully. It is their wont.)

  • Corsetmaker

Well I’m still in a huff with him for not making the rally in Edinburgh the other week and sending a video message instead. But he’s too easy to forgive – so I quite like it, but it’s the jeans and boots I like. The shirt that I don’t.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I love him; he’s so cute and such a smart ass.

  • NoveltyRocker

What great hair! Sort of disheveled and loosely curling without any obvious greasy product getting in the way of that natural texture. The frames, the sly glint in the eye—loving this head game.

  • Fordzo

I like the shoes, love the pants (especially cuffed to that length), I adore the glasses, and I’m OK with the shirt. But the wrinkly jacket looks like he just pulled it out from under his bed and threw it on.

  • tmchale

The jacket is a slightly different shade from the pants and it looks awkward.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Some of the comments from posts of Fashion week Spring shows have bemoaned the appearance of the sheer shirts on the runway. And many of us have lamented that there is no one who would actually wear a sheer shirt. And yet, here it is.

  • Fannie Wolston

Did he borrow those boots offa big footed bum? Is that a tin of skoal in his front pocket? The hair is killah, but that shirt was borrowed from Miley!

  • MoHub

Don’t care whether the Uncles love or hate the outfit. I’m just glad to see Alan Cumming back on the site!

  • Fannie Wolston

shitkickers aside, I could see any number of women wearing this, kate moss even

  • CatherineRhodes

So odd to see him all button-downed on “The Good Wife.”

  • Shawn EH

Glittery shoes were all he needed. Calling Robert Downey!

  • Gatto Nero

Is it the shiny, shiny jacket that tips it into too-muchness? Whatever. I love the rest of the look and think a jacket of some kind works over the sheer shirt. Great boots, and frames too. Mr. Cumming can do no wrong in my eyes.

  • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

    Aw c’mon. I like.
