Sofia Vergara in New York City

Posted on September 26, 2013

We should probably just skip featuring her on the red carpet and restrict ourselves to the on-the-street shots. We’re always ragging on her for defaulting to the very boring mermaid dresses on the RC, whereas when she hits the sidewalk…

Sofia Vergara leaving Bergdorf Goodmans after shopping in New Yok City carrying a Givenchy bag.

Givenchy Medium Antigona Bag

… we swoon.

We can’t help it, darlings. We’re hard-wired to go weak in the knees over a well-deployed Rich Bitch look. We’re the worst kind of gays. The shallow kind. Oh, wait. That’s why you love us.

Enviable bag, no? Then again, that’s the entire point behind a Rich Bitch look: envy. A head-to-toe sneer with accompanying, “You WISH.” Hair flip optional, but highly recommended. Gigantic sunglasses mandatory.

I COVET THAT BAG WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY MISERABLE BEING.

    • PlethoraofBooks

Maybe if we sell our kidneys… and a portion of our liver, we can afford it, and share it. Then one of us will break the agreement to share it and we’ll go to court and lose our friendship forever.

At least, that’s how it plays out in my head. Hence I’ll never sell my kidneys, even though I covet many an expensive thing.

      • SophiaPehawkins

My friend and I went in on a pancake maker together and take it every other week. That sort of arrangement totally works.

        • RoseJB

          Aww. That sounds so cute!
          But, what’s a pancake maker?

          • SophiaPehawkins

            Ahh! Disqus ate my comment.

Perfect Pancake Maker is on as seen on TV item. I’d link a picture, but then my comment has to wait for approval. Just know, it actually works!

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Whenever I leave a department store carrying an expensive hand bag, I’m typically being followed by store security.

      • DebbieLovesShoes

        haha. Made me laugh!

  • Darva Sutra

    Nailed it! Fabulous!

  • thecitysleeps

I just need to ask. Do women in the real world wear those shoes in their every day life? Because if so I’m such a failure. The bag is quite nice although I’m not a huge fan of the colour. It’s all so depressing.

    • Random Compliments

I wear flats at all times – so I am one real woman in the real world with a real job who DEFINITELY doesn’t wear those shoes in my daily life.

    • nowlo

Not I. Heels make you walk more slowly and I am too impatient for that. Plus I have weak ankles and am fairly uncoordinated (which is a disaster when you’re also a fast walker). I’ve tripped and fallen while wearing flats!

      • shorty j

last time I wore heels to work, I fell out of them. Twice. And then immediately went down the street to Payless, bought some cheap flats, and never did that again. Ugh.

    • Lucía Gavello

I can’t walk in those shoes at all, I wear wedges most of the time at work, and flats everywhere else.

    • MilaXX

I don’t but I see women wearing them that high quite a lot. Ironically I see them the most at Target. Not every Target, but this one particular Target near my gym. Its near a college campus and a lot of offices, including a few news stations so that may have something to do with it. It’s also one of the few places I saw someone in real life wearing knee length gladiator sandals that actually looked cute.

      • demidaemon

I’ve actually seen a few of my students wearing them and I always fear something awful is going to happen to them, especially since all of my classrooms are on the upper floors. It’s very nail-biting for me. I want to say something, but I know I never will.

    • alyce1213

I see them and laugh — women hobbling down the street in shoes like this. It’s unattractive on a few levels (hoof-like, bad posture, stumbling), and all for the illusion of a little extra height and leg length. I’m glad to see a return to single sole shoes, and can’t wait for shooves to go away altogether.

      • RoseJB

        Shooves! Love it!

    • sagecreek

I’m quite short and for years I tended to look way too young for my job, so yes, I wore some pretty serious heels in my day.

About ten years I had an accident and now I have a pin in my leg, so those days are over. I still have some of the shoes, though :)

    • Imasewsure

Rich bitch diva celebs who go from Barneys to the limo, the penthouse to the limo, etc. DEFINITELY wear these shoes or some other heavenly equivalent on a regular basis… especially if they are tiny divas. Their version of “real” and our version of “real” isn’t even in the same stratosphere!!

    • Whitney Barkley

Truthfully? I wear them everyday. Flats make me feel so short and stumpy. But now, at the broken down age of 29, I’m pretty sure my feet are ruined.

      • RoseJB

Agreed. I don’t go over 3 inches, but I do wear heels every workday. My bicycle is my limo, though, so I never have to walk far.

    • MK03

No, I deploy them strategically for special occasions. Mostly occasions that don’t require me to walk a lot.

    • Jai Piper

Most of the women who wear those shoes “in real life” have no idea how to walk in them with any grace. There’s a claclop claclop sound that is very unattractive.

      • SugarSnap108

And those women live in the apartment above me…where they apparently practice-walk in these things.

    • muzan-e

Flats for the sidewalk, heels for the destination.

If only because I’ve the mixed blessing of being a tall women with stumpy legs; wearing flats leaves me looking a little Ronald McDonald. *g*

    • filmcricket

I work with two women who frequently wear them in the office, but when they have to head out to grab lunch, they put their flats on.

I wear Birkenstocks in the summer and Blundstones in the winter, so I’m totally with you, although I do love looking at them. I also agree on the bag. Make it red, make it teal, make it apple green, make it pumpkin orange, and I’ll get interested.

      • rajf

        you are my hero.

    • fursa_saida

I used to wear them quite often–not every day, but maybe once a week. (Not big platforms, but quite high heels.) I’m out of the habit now, but I’d sort of like to get back into it. I’m in the process of rediscovering my fashion sense, because for the last year and a half I lived in a place where it was best to dress not to be noticed. (Tons of street harassment.)

    • ItsDicey

But, this isn’t about the real world. So no.

    • Targettaste

I am amazed at the women who hobble through Disneyland on high heels.

      • GreenTurtle

That was actually a plot point for her character on Modern Family.

        • Targettaste

I forgot about that! One of my favorite episodes of one of my favorite shows.

    • shorty j

I see women at my job wearing these sorts of shoes all the time, and it’s totally depressing. Mostly because I work for a big stodgy financial corporation, so the noise and posture that go along with giant shoes basically screams I NEED A LOT OF ATTENTION. Also they’re usually paired with skirts that, at the risk of sounding repressive, I suspect are WAY too short for office life.

    • Rhonda Shore

She’s on her way to a limo, no doubt…can’t imagine she’s taking a long walk! And she looks just fabulous!

    • GreenTurtle

I wear heels at work a lot, but flats to and from work, and everywhere else in casual circumstances. Shopping should be an enjoyable pastime, which is difficult when your feet hurt!

    • murt

I was living in Nairobi for the last year, and while I was there I always used to see Kenyan women walking around downtown wearing shoes that high………. I have no idea how they managed! Especially considering Kenyan public transit and the potholes in Nairobi!

  • kimmeister

The best accessories are the superswank shades and the megawatt smile.

    • largishbearishAtlish

I was just thinking…I am gay…but how have I never noticed that amazing smile? (i.e. was I noticing lady parts or something, or do the shades hide the beautiful eyes?) Wow, what a great smile and teeth- worth every cent!

  • Random Compliments

    Gorgeous. Stunning.
So much better than any/all of her red carpet looks.

    • jen_vasm

I bet she drops that Charro accent, too when out and about like this.

  • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

    The bag is huge!

    • nowlo

It looks really heavy. My arm and shoulder feel tired just looking at that thing.

    • alyce1213

And it’s the only medium size!

    • SouthernGirlRena

It is! I was thinking it would be perfect at about 1/3 the size.

  • MilaXX

I love a big bag. I was with you until I saw the shoes are too big.

    • sagecreek

It’s one of those things that’s starting to bug me more every time I see it. Don’t these people fit things for a LIVING?

      • mhleta

Throw in some Dr. Scholl’s inserts and, Presto, it’s fixed. Not so hard, right? Then why the gapping heels with these people all the time.

    • kimmeister

It looks like just the right shoe is too big though. My left foot is bigger than my right, so I have to buy to fit the left, while the right is a little loose.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

Do you know that Nordstrom’s will order you two different sizes if one foot is a certain amount bigger than the other?

        • kimmeister

I have heard that, but the difference between my feet isn’t even a half-size.

          • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

Yeah, they require a bigger difference than that. There are Dr. Scholl’s products to help your right foot not slide or take the shoes to a good shoe repair. They can do all kinds of magic.

    • filmcricket

Yes, but these look like: “I’m wearing nylons with enormous heels so I’m sliding forwards a bit” rather than “I’ve borrowed these shoes from the designer and have to take what I’m given.”

  • Cele Deemer

    Wowie kabowie. She’s the BOMB!

  • lundibleu

She looks fantastic. Her and Salma really have these looks tied down, don’t they.

    • alyce1213

      I think Victoria Beckham too.

      • lundibleu

I see her less as Rich Bitch (TM) and more someone who really knows what her style is and how to work it. I’m sure the two combine sometimes though.

  • hughman

    “American Horror Story : Covet”

  • alyce1213

I like her ‘regular’ looks so much better than her RC appearances, which bug me for being so stereotypically vavoom. I don’t expect Tilda-level fashion, but SOMETHING a little different, anything.
She’s adorable in these shots, but I hate those shooves.

  • formerlyAnon

She looks SO fabulous here. Bag is great but it’s the coat I am envying. If it’s really the deep, deep navy it looks like on my monitor that’s even better than black.

    • mhleta

Yeah, it’s the coat that has me all hot and bothered, too. The bag I could take or leave. I’m kind of wanting something with a little more interest to it, like a texture or something.

    • filmcricket

      The coat is TO DIE.

  • Hoffa_w_HerHead

That watch! Maybe it’s thrown in with the bag?!

    • alyce1213

The WATCH! Had to go back and look again. Love.

    • kimmeister

Whoa, is that a watch that wraps around like a snake?

  • Orange Girl

She looks nice though, not like a bitch. That bag is something else, man. I want to run my hands over it.

Don’t love her shoes. I’m sure they’re very expensive, but they look a little Charlotte Russe.

  • Miranda

I would definitely sell a kidney for that bag.

  • Funkykatt

I think she looks a lot better with darker hair.

  • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

Great look! I always wonder, though, just what celebrities put in those ginormous designer bags. I mean, it’s not like she really has to carry around a lot of gear to get her through the day.

    • conniemd

My daughter carries a bag that big (sadly not a designer). It has her IPad, Nook, cellphone, , makeup, wallet, checkbooks, bottle of Motrin, pens, keys with about 10 key chains in order to find them in the bottom of gigantic bag, plus mail and bills from home that she will deal with at the office. I might add she’s a lawyer and has a briefcase too, for court. But if she’s not going to court, most everything ends up in her purse.

  • nannypoo

On the red carpet she always looks like a slutty Chiquita Banana. Here she is adorable.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Love her. Want her. Want to be her.

  • decormaven

Whoa! That is a great look for her. Wish she would develop more of a RB look for the red carpet.

  • bertkeeter

    All great until…..the shoes!

  • random_poster

Bags like that are gorgeous. All I have to think about is aggravating the tennis-elbow strain (actually, toddler-carrying strain), and remember that it’s not just the cost that keeps those out of my life.

  • stubbornthoughts

All those Real Housewives *wish* they looked this spectacular.

Goddamn, I need to get famous so I can tote that gorgeous bag.

  • Kimberlini

Her normal street wear in LA includes flared jeans that look like the hem has been let out. Not swoon-worthy at all.

  • Pennymac

Love her. The pitch she gave for her K Mart undies on the Emmy RC made me adore her even more! And the commercials almost have me wanting to GO to K Mart. Wait. No. Nevermind.

  • Trisha26

That bag looks too big to be an airplane carry-on. When are these Betty Boop/stripper shoes going away?

  • bellafigura1

    The bag is vulgar.

  • Celeste

    That’s a medium bag?!?!

  • Jacquelyn

That bag could fit like three of my bags and a change of clothing.

    Oh that coat. Gimme.

  • understateddiva

She needs to cut her hair off right where the first set of layers start – would be gorge!

  • Denis

You know what else I love about her? She’s 41… remember 15 years ago whenever a female turned 40 and it was considered ancient? Who thinks like that anymore? This fabulous bitch gets more stunning every minute…

  • Tracy_Flick

I don’t know, guys. This look is reading a little Alaska Airlines to me.

    • GorgeousThings

      Hey, I LIKE Alaska Airlines!

      • Tracy_Flick

Oh, me too! And as flight attendant uniforms go, theirs aren’t bad. But picture this with a little wings pin at the lapel, and put her in the airport…..

  • SugarSnap108

Platform pumps aren’t going away, are they? This is one of the better deployments of them that I’ve seen, though.

  • jilly_d

    JEEEEZUS I WANT THAT BAG

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I a just world, I would own Antigona bags in every size and color.

  • LeSourire

    That is the MEDIUM bag?

    • Trickytrisha

I, too, was struck by that. The large could probably house a herd of beagles.

  • cocohall

I love this girl. I think she is terribly clever in the way she dresses both on and off the red carpet. This look says “You underestimate me at your own risk. I will force your hand in a business negotiation, and you will find yourself smiling even as you give me everything I asked for on my next contract.” Her red carpet looks are all about brand management. She knows precisely what the pubic wants from her and delivers. Much like Dolly Parton is always on point giving FULL DOLLY when she appears in public. It isn’t fashion, really; they both have images that they OWN.

    • demidaemon

Agreed. I don’t think I have seen anyone say it better.

  • Leah

The bag costs $2,435, according to google. If you sell a kidney on the black market, you can make $262,000!

  • tallgirl1204

I can’t call it a rich bitch look because that big smile lightens the whole thing into “isn’t it a crazy old world, and ain’t I lucky?”. I reserve th b-word for those who have it all and still scowl.

  • Trevor Scott

Congrats to the kid who will forever be immortalized for picking his nose next to Sofia Vergara

  • procrastinatrice

Well, it seems that this particular rich bitch is not wearing shoes her own size even on the sidewalk.
Really, with that much money, is it that hard to just buy shoes that actually fit you instead of relying on free ones that are too large for you?
That said, I do mostly love this look. That hair and that smile…she can keep the bag, I will take those:)

  • Madeline Zappala

she’s like a happy fun victoria beckham

  • Aurumgirl

I’m only “you wish” about the hair. She does look so much better off the red carpet.

  • Targettaste

She and Heidi look so much better in their casual candid photos.

  • Monday1900

The bag does nothing for me but I love the outfit. I’m always amazed at how tiny she looks in street clothes (not that she looks big on the RC but it just bears out the truth of the idea that squeezing into a dress too small for you does not make you look smaller).

  • GorgeousThings

That’s quite the little rock she’s sporting. If I’m going to get bursitis, I’d rather get it from a diamond of that size than a two-ton bag.

  • ballerinawithagun

Beautiful bag! Is she carrying the medium size, because it looks huge! She is fabulous!

  • Erica_Vuitton

It’s always suspect to me when a star goes shopping… but doesn’t buy anything. Nice free purse pap outfit though, that is a super cute trench!

  • joancarol

Ah,life is good for a Rich Bitch.

  • Shawn EH

We like it when fortune smiles on celebrities, right? She’s having that fabulous time for all of us!

  • melanie0866

I don’t love the bag, but I adore the coat.

  • MannahattaMamma

that bag is a farce. good thing it’s empty b/c if a person actually had to carry anything in it, it would leave bruises. Mythology moment: Antigone was the daughter of Oedipus…and his mother. So um, an Antigona bag is frankly a little weird. Just saying.

  • littlemac8

Do you think women carry those ginormous bags to fit in a pair of flats??? I love the coat!!! I love the tights!!!

  • frannyprof

Sofia and Salma need to have a rich bitch-off.

  • Adrianna Grężak

She looks great. shoes look a little big

  • MissusBee

I respect the fact that the bag looks like it has something in it.

  • macwell

I think it would be so hot if she and Selma Hayek got together to do a ‘ladies who lunch’ lunch. That – I’d love to see… ;)

  • DebbieLovesShoes

“We’re the worst kind of gays. The shallow kind. Oh, wait. That’s why you love us.” Love you guys!! You make me smile every day.

  • Constant Cat

    Minnie Mouse Shoes. No.

  • DuBey2

Last month a family member was in the hospital and the hospitalist (an internal Medical Doctor) wore some JUST like these the 1st day when she saw him in the ER. Each day thereafter, we checked out her shoes, always heels, (some were wedges) and she moved quite well in them. She told me she orders them online because of time limitations, but I suspect that no stores in our area carry what she really wants. She was beautiful inside and out, and was very professional but definitely looked great under her Dr.s white coat.

  • Fuchaforever

I looooove eet!!! Mami you look fabulous!!!!!! Brava chica!
