Scarlett Johansson Style Double Shot

Posted on September 04, 2013

At first we were all, “Why, Miss Scarlett! New stylist? New attitude? Just what is it, girl?”

But then we were all, “Wait. We’re seeing some problems…”

And after that we were all, “We should totally point out everything she did wrong! Fun!”

Scarlett Johansson attends the “Under The Skin” photocall during the 2013 Venice International Film Festival in a top by Sonia Rykiel paired with high-waisted Roland Mouret pants and Roger Vivier shoes.

This looks kind of chic and striking at first glance. But oh boy, do those pants get problematic the longer you look at them. They’re okay from the front, but they’re not at all flattering from the side. And we shouldn’t be able to see the closure like that. Looks like there’s a bit too much too-clever pleating on the front, giving it shape and volume where it’s not needed. Love the sweater, though. A simpler pant would’ve made this look perfect.

Scarlett Johansson attends the premiere of “Under The Skin” during the 2013 Venice International Film Festival in a Versace gown paired with Bulgari jewelry.

But there’s something just a little Miss Piggy about that necklace with that gown. Too much boob and candy-colored jewelry in one space. Bulgari and Versace are such showy brands that we’re not sure they’re at their best when paired like this. It’s got an old school stripper vibe to it. We like both the dress and the necklace, but we’re afraid we find them to be a bit much when paired together.

She looks undeniably pretty, though.

Damn, she looks amazing in Versace. No crits from me.

    • PlethoraofBooks

ScarJo got her groove back… Mostly.

The necklace seriously bugs me. And I wish the Versace was in color. Oh well…

      • mshesterp

I think the necklace looks really cheap, like beads a kid strung, and I KNOW it ain’t cheap. But the dress looks amazing and fits her perfectly. If you’re going to do black, make it sing (and she does)–just not with that necklace!

    • omg_dora

I’ve never found her that attractive because she’s usually so awkward-looking. She looks absolutely beautiful here. The dress is super-flattering, the makeup and hair are perfect, and for once she’s posing gracefully and confidently.

    • Getoverit

She looks great in the dress and I love the necklace, gives it a little color.

  • Zanna6

Pretty, but that Lite-Brite necklace looks cheap somehow.

    • ConnieBV

Yeah, I can see where she probably wanted to add some color, but think of how great it would be if all the stones were one bright color, like the fuschia or green.

  • kimmeister

I wouldn’t have thought she would be able to pull off high-waisted pants, but it turns out she can. Just not these particular pleated ones. Her makeup looks stellar in the 2nd look, and she looks happy.

    • Rhonda Shore

The high waisted pants don’t work…maybe she shouldn’t have tucked the sweater in, from the side she looks enormous, and she’s not. The second look is gorgeous though.

      • kimmeister

Like I said, these particular ones don’t work.

    • Zanna6

“Pull off” is exactly what she should do to those pants.

  • NMMagpie

I can’t believe you guys did not say anything about those putty shoes.

    • HM3

Putty-shoe-hatred is a given: they are unworthy of even a mention.

    • Little_Olive

Same here. Not only because of the color, but oh heavens platforms with a gown.

      • NMMagpie

        That was my first thought!

      • Heather

The only exception to that rule was Helen Mirren in her stripper platforms w/the green gown. Now that was awesome!!

    • mshesterp

I didn’t even notice those until you mentioned them. Why, ScarJo, why?????

    • Getoverit

Ugh! I didn’t even notice them until I got to the comments. They are awful. She must have already smoked one by the time she had to put her shoes on.

  • Those pants are huge! Ready for the office and premenstrual bloating.
I like the dress, but the candy colored jewels, which are undoubtedly bullshit expensive, just look like cheap costume.
    Loving the face.

    • Little_Olive

Thanks for typing for me 😉

  • Trickytrisha

Icky pants. Icky pants. But dang, she has the body to wear that dress. The necklace seems to be fighting for dominance though.

  • MilaXX

I think both looks are an improvement since I she tends to dress a bit mature. First look, the pleats are a problem, creating a bit of a mom jean silhouette. Second look, the multicolored necklace is too much with a black gown. It looks cheap. In both looks her foundation looks a bit blotchy. I’m not sure if that’s lighting or not.

    • kmk05

MOM JEANS! Such beautiful words to encompass the cringe at seeing those pics one after the other. I actually quite like her face in both, but the necklace + gown combination looks mismatched and a little old-fashioned.

    • housefulofboys

Mom jeans were the first thought in my head, too.

  • imspinningaround

Her stank face in the second set of photos is giving me LIFE.

  • misstressofsylar

she’s engaged! this probably explains the glow on her face. check out the rock.

    • MilaXX

I saw. Apparently someone named Romain Dauriac. Never heard of him, but I wish her well.

      • demidaemon

That probably will work out better for them in the long run. Dual celebrity relationships do not have the greatest track record.

  • HM3

Not quite Miss-Piggy-ish–I believe the two pieces don’t go together because the Versace is TOO muted of a color. The necklace might’ve been nice with an emerald-green gown.

Also, the bust is terribly unflattering. She needs more coverage.

  • Karen Belgrad

    Is…she…wearing…. a…. NUDE (!!!!) …shoe… with…. a …black…. dress???

    • Girl_With_a_Pearl

The color is odd I agree and they look some-what geriatric.

  • KayEmWhy

Hate the necklace and shoes, love the dress. Has she had some work done?

    • Getoverit

I don’t think so. She looks like she always had. Only difference I notice is her face is a little shinier than usual.

      • KayEmWhy

        Hum okay.

  • Belvane

On pretty much anyone else, I’d agree about the combination of a lot of bosom and a lot of necklace. But Miss Scarlett has always been all about lushness and sensuality, so a bit of excess like this comes across (to me, anyway) as romantic and feminine, rather than trashy or cheap. And those gorgeous shoulders!

    • AnguaVonUberwald

Amen! “Lush” was exactly the word that came to my mind, looking at her in that gown. She looks amazing.

    • calimon

It might be a bit of a reach, but I see a bit of a blonde Sophia Loren there.

      • understateddiva

It’s the eye makeup – it really works for her!

  • NoveltyRocker

I really like the colorful necklace but it has a look that doesn’t jive so well with the super formal, black gown. And this is just a personal thing but I’ve always thought sleeves like that just look like they’ve slipped off the shoulders. And nude shoes really throw it all out of wack.

  • decormaven

I think the necklace/bodice work well in the second look, but I’m all about the dazzle. Spot on observation about the pants in look #1- a more fitted look would have turned that into a WERQ.

  • sagecreek

Hate the hair in the first look.

The second look…well, she’s making it work.

    • Sarah

Loretta Swit Hotlips realness, that hair.

      • Imasewsure

You are so right… not a good look for either of them.

      • sagecreek

        OMG That’s IT!

  • Eclectic Mayhem

There was one angle shot (that I saw on the IMDB) of that frock where she actually looked a wee bit pregnant. If she is it rather suits her, she looks beautiful.

  • hughman

    Mom pants, Lisa Frank necklace.

  • Alloy Jane

She’s wearing grampa pants. Why? So unflattering and really, it’s all I can see. She may as well tie a bunch of balloons to a house, that’s how grampa she looks.

LOVE the second look. I suppose the bright necklace and all that boobage is a bit Miss Piggy, but I don’t see that as a terrible thing. Makes me wish she had a Kermit-shaped handbag though.

  • Aidan B

It is just me, or is her blonde looking a little brassy and unflattering?

  • Lilyana_F

    Wow, ok, she’s so hot..

  • Monzerrat Ontiveros

I’m sending this post to my husband right now, she looks amazing!

  • cowper

  • LaSylphide

Re the seond look: As my husband – a man of great learning, discerning taste, and vast intellect – put it, “Va va voom!”

  • lilyvonschtupp

Who came up with the idiotic idea that she was the next Marilyn Monroe? Is it because Miz felt her up a few years back?
Didn’t see it then, don’t see it now. But I like the pants.

  • Jacquelyn

For the first set I am going to pretty much ignore everything from the waist down, cause EEK. Pants. The gown looks good on her, I think. She’s so gorgeous.

  • Just Me

Boy, those pants are problematic. They make her look, well, like me…and trust and know, she does NOT have my hips on her worst day. The second look is lovely. The necklace might be a bit of a head scratch, but I appreciate that it is at least something young, colorful and fun. It hints at the diamonds everyone would expect to see in the shape, but it not so serious. Good on her!

  • Linda LaPaz

Wow! Two Versace looks that are classy and elegant rather than vulgar and cheap looking!

  • From the front, the first look is a WERQ. It elongates her frame, but she should have shasayed to the right aaaaall the way down the red carpet to avoid any side-shots.

As for the second look, no necklace can take away the attention from a dress or body like that! Snaps!

  • Both looks scream, ‘ I have lost interest!’
And let me state for the record that I feel strongly that the tops of pants should never be shown. They don’t look good. Ever. Closures, belts, weird waist lines. If that top was fitted and not tucked in, we’d be all set. Tucked in screams, ‘mom jeans!’

  • Sally3000

I don’t like the pants or the sweater for her, but MAN does she look AMAZING in that dress! Holy WOW.

  • Akmall Razlan

Well, with those pants, I believe, she wanted toned it down a little bit and with that gorgeous Versace gown, damn! She just want to be classic. And to be honest, she is class-sick to me. Really! Amazing! Love it. It that necklace is in yellow, it would be so much fun. Dont you think that the gown is a little bit long on her?

  • GorgeousThings

I had those pants back in the 80s, when they had a Georges Marciano label in them. They were bad then; they haven’t improved with the years.

The second gown is really lovely, and she gives off a Young-Sophia-Loren vibe. Probably all the décolletage. The necklace is spectacular, but yes, I think the two together are too much.

    • calimon

SL, I had the same thought!

  • Latin Buddy

    That necklace looks CHEAP

  • SewingSiren

The neckline on the gown is perfect for her . She should have dresses for all occasions made with that neckline. And maybe a swimsuit too.

    • MissKimP

I agree. She’s channeling Kim Novak in that gown.

    • mshesterp

It makes me wonder how so many other strapless gowns go so far wrong when i see her in this one–or maybe it’s just HER in THIS strapless gown that’s so perfect.

      • SewingSiren

It is the little sleeve/ off the shoulder strap detail that makes it for me. That is very flattering on most women . it was very popular in the 1950’s but not seen so much these days.

      • omg_dora

The design of the dress is lovely and classy, but I think what makes it stand out is mostly the fit. The bodice here is just as tight as it needs to be in order to hold itself up, and the breasts are cradled rather than being pushed up to her chin or squeezed or flattened.

  • I want the sweater in the first outfit to wear under my suits (yes, I am suiting pretty much every day now, boringly – anxiously awaiting those bar results).
The necklace makes her look like a mermaid, in a not-unflattering way. Disney snaps.

  • turbo_cat

She is really trying to hide that engagement ring….

    • KirFla

I was wondering if she was trying to hide the tattoo on her forearm?

  • redhead with tattoos

Disagree on the Versace. She looks A++++ stunning. I don’t think it’s Miss Piggy — I think it’s the perfect thing with the big black (incredibly flattering) gown.

  • makeityourself

I wanna focus on the second look.

My first thought — Sophia Loren would have worn the matching earrings.

Miss Scarlet does look pretty, radiant and happy. I would have started the entire ensemble with the necklace simply because it makes her eyes look so green.
I like the design of her dress very much, but the color is all wrong for the necklace. So have Versace make it in a modern, dirty green. Without the sequins on the sleeves. A necklace like that does not need sequins.
Next, you select a simple sandal without a platform in a dark neutral. Nothing flashy, because the flash is at the neck. Then a gemstone ring on the right hand. You’re finished!

  • DamH

The Versace look is stunning and her face is gorgeous(of course).

  • The problem might be that she just looks unbelievably good. When a woman looks that hot, she has to be careful not to look cheap. She’s just in a class by herself, her royal hotness. I’m female. I’m not gay. She’s hot. What’s even more amazing is that I saw her on a morning talk show wearing straight-legged pants with a button-down blouse over the top. She is confident enough to cover herself up.

  • msdamselfly

The necklace might look better with a white dress. And maybe a gold one for the black dress.
Love the first outfit, including the baggy pants.

  • Levedi

I loved the necklace at first glance. Then I saw the close up – it looks like it’s made out of plastic beads. I still love the over all look, but I wish the necklace was more tastefully crafted.

  • Qitkat

The sweater top is cute, although the pants fastener is unfortunate. But I love a well-tucked top on a gal with a great figure. I am so very tired of wearing all my tops hanging over my pants, and it fools no one. Is that a tattooed bracelet? Wha…?

At least someone is wearing a pretty necklace with a low-cut gown. I love it. Gown is too long though. She is very pretty in both.

  • veleri

pic number 7: strutting leo meets ocially awkward penguin!

    love it!

  • Anne

On the other hand, she looks so happy and healthy I almost find it hard to criticize her. You can tell that SHE loves the way she looks and that’s important too.

  • Kent Roby

That necklace is Bulgari? Lord, it looks like a rhinestone drag queen necklace that would be sold with the matching shoulder-scraping earrings. Incidentally, last night I saw the trailer for ” Don Jon” with her and the adorable Joseph Gordon-Levitt; looks like alot of fun.

  • anotherkate

What can I say, I LOVE that second look. She looks like a damn movie star, and that’s really all I want from her.

  • marlie

I’m not loving either look. The first… looks like a “regular gal” at the office. And the Versace dress would be ok, but it doesn’t fit her correctly. Add the overdone jewelry that screams “80s”… both looks are “outs” to me.

  • MarissaLG

I think both of these looks are gorgeous. I’m not crazy about the shoes in the second set- black or silver would have been a better choice, i think- but still. Love both looks. I would definitely wear the first one.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I think she needs to do something to distinguish herself from Amber Heard.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I agree completely on the first look — looks great from the front but the pants are problematic from the side — and pretty much on the second, except I wouldn’t say Miss Piggy for it at all. I kind of love the look except for the rainbow-colored necklace, which I hate. The colors make it look like something a little kid would pick out at the Woolworth counter. But I love the dress, the hair and the makeup in look #2.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

I love the Versace dress. Her makeup looks kind of weird in both pictures. I doubt she needs all that crap on her face. At first I thought she lost a ton of weight, but then I realized that her contouring was giving her skeletor cheekbones.

  • Jackie4g

She’s just gorgeous. I’m not feeling the high waisted pants, and if there are belt loops, oughten’t you to use a belt? However, that aside, I loved the Rykiel sweater – which would probably cost the earth, but which you could wear for years if you didn’t spill on it. I liked the whole of the gown look, while noting that if there had been time to hem it, she wouldn’t have had to wear her tallest shoes, which turned out to be nude platforms. Ah well, the shoes are mostly covered, and Scarlett remains adorable.

  • shorty j

it really does look like she’s wearing someone’s dad’s business trousers, with the ginormous thigh space.

  • PeaceBang

Hate the necklace, the make-up and the shoes. And she needs a better bra.

  • LauraAgain

That black dress fits her like a glove. Agree completely about the necklace … too much.

I wonder if she ever regrets that bracelet tattoo.
