Sarah Hyland in Clover Canyon at the 2013 Teen Vogue Young Hollywood Party

Posted on September 30, 2013

We’re not sure about this one. We never quite like what she chooses to wear for her public appearances. She has a tendency to either go straight to the sexy-sex Lea Michele-style looks or over-fripperied romantic confections that only play up her doll-like features a bit too much. This feels youthful and not try-too-hard, but that’s a whole hell of a lot of print and it’s all more than a little stiff. In fact, she looks a little bell-shaped.

“Modern Family” star Sarah Hyland attends the 2013 Teen Vogue Young Hollywood Party in a Clover Canyon dress paired with Casadei pumps, an Edie Parker clutch, and Marina B and Tacori jewelry.

Clover Canyon Ski Garden Strapless Dress

Then again, there are tiny little people skiing on her skirt and that automatically renders our complaints moot. We suddenly love it.

And we have to say, those shoes are a little bridesmaid-y, but that’s an excellent color choice to pull out of the dress.

Finally! She doesn’t look like an under-aged call girl but like a fresh and gorgeous young woman!

    • alyce1213

I love it! This is not her usual look, but it should be.

      • mshesterp

Agreed–the shape is not my absolute favorite, but the styling and print more than make up for it. I think she looks adorable.

    • Adriana_Paula

So happy she lightened up on the makeup. I like it.

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

        Makeup is finally just right.

    • Feathers McGraw

oh gosh I have been reading you guys for two long. my first reflex (out loud) was: oh wow those shoes look seriously bridesmaid-y but at least the color works great!

      • 3boysful

        DTM satin

    • Dagney

Oh Thank heavens, the make up staff got their shit together. She looks beautiful.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I love this! The hair, the fun dress, the pop shoes, it’s all working for me.

    • raeb23

not loving the bridesmaid shoes, but she looks great otherwise!

    • hughman

That fabric is like a Blingee for your dress.

    • neonseattle

she actually looks her age for once.

    • Jacquelyn

Those shoes need to be in my closet post haste. Like I’m going to go check right now….they need to be there.

    • DesertDweller79

I like it! I, too, suddenly approved when I saw the skiers on the skirt. :) Like the shoe color a lot.

    • HVM

I think this is a personal best for her.

    • fauxprah

      why’s she wearing wrapping paper?

    • Sara__B

Nice. This would be perfect if the dress were shorter (but then the little skiing people would be gone) and the shoes weren’t satin.

      • conniemd

Is she a lot shorter than the model? It’s mid-thigh length on the model and his her on the knee. And yeah I love the skiing people.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I can’t believe I’m going to say this out loud, but I actually preferred the booties. Still, total step in the right direction.

      • Anathema_Device

I prefer them too! I think it adds a little funk to the dress in a fun way.

    • DTLAFamilies

I like everything except the manicure which is seriously ugly and attention-pulling.

    • Anathema_Device

I like the dress. It has interesting shape without competing with the pattern. That can be hard to do well. I like the blue booties in the lookbook shot, but I get wanting to dress it up a bit by wearing pumps.

      • alyce1213

I’m nuts about the blue booties, but with the dress longer, heels were called for.

        • Anathema_Device

Good point about the difference in dress lengths. Eagle eyes Alyce!

    • Kate

her spray tan has calmed down a bit since The Emmy’s.

    • Kate4queen

      I like it!

    • H2olovngrl

I like this one quite a bit, but then I am always a sucker for an unusual print.

    • Trickytrisha

For me, she’ll always look like she belongs in a box on a shelf in Toys R Us, but this is probably her best outing. Like the dress, loathe the skiers. The print on the back of the dress is interesting.

    • Imasewsure

I love it on her – partly because I usually hate what she’s wearing or how it’s styled. I think this is great! Points for not wearing white pumps

    • Imasewsure

Props for her hair and makeup too… keep these gays and fire the warpaint/Kewpee crew!!

    • d4divine

She should have gone for the same proportions as the model look…shorter with booties

    • Trisha26

She looks sophisticated. Thanks in large part to the length – difference between her at 5’2″ wearing the same dress as a 5’10″ model?

    • Rachael

I think this would be a perfect look if the material of the dress wasn’t quite so stiff. It looks much softer on the model.

    • marlie

I kind of like this. For once, she actually looks her age – not 6 pounds of makeup, and not a dress better suited for a 45-year-old woman.

    • susu

Best I’ve ever seen her look!

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

I think she’s right on the money this time. I think she’s a stylish girl, but sometimes she dresses a bit on the older side (barely). This is extremely tasteful and a little edgy. I like it.

    • sagecreek

      Love the dress.

Those shoes make my feet hurt, and my feet aren’t even in the same area code.

      • MaryMitch

Yes, why do we cheer shoes that basically deform women’s feet?

    • ShaoLinKitten

She looks cute, but her hair is a bit much. Minor quibble.

    • Rand Ortega

Personal best for Miss Sarah. So happy she ditched the Sofia Jr. drag.

    • MilaXX

It’s an attagirl in my book. From the front it looks bell shaped, but from the back it works. I love her makeup not being painted up to make her look like a kewpie doll for a change. The shoe color is a great choice. She could have went a shade or two lighter on the spray tan, but overall this is a vast improvement over her previous appearances here.

    • Laura F.

This is so much better than she usually does! She’s wearing a lot of slap, but it doesn’t look like a lot of makeup, as it normally does with her. The print on the dress is novel, and the color of the shoes is really great, if not the material. Well done, Sarah’s stylist and makeup artist.

    • Sara Brams-Miller

I agree. I love this outfit – head to toe!

    • Miranda

She’s so adorable. I actually like the booties with the dress on the model. So young and vibrant….*I reminisce..I reminisce*

    • StelledelMare

I feel like it looks more stiff on her than on the model. Also, I’m so over ombre hair.

    • Sadie-Ann

If nothing else it’s better than the other outfits I’ve seen so far from this event.

    • lrhg

Love the dress. Unless a print is just horrible I’m inclined to love it just because it’s something different.

Her makeup is 1000% better than it was last week.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I don’t love she shoes but I do love the ring! And this just all looks really pretty.

    • decormaven

Kudos all around. The dress print is interesting, and while I wouldn’t have picked those particular shoes for the outfit, they are an interesting color choice. That second shot of her is stunning. Pin that picture up beside the makeup mirror, stylists, and keep her cosmetics in this palette. This is a personal best for her.

    • kmk05

IN! She looks amazing. i actually like the exaggerated bell shape, her hair and makeup are great (her eyes are just phenomenal). Not a fan of the pointy shoes, though, but it might be because they’re satin. I wish she had taken the dress up an inch.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I love this. She looks perfect and the dress is so whimsical it makes me smile.

    • ojosazules

That is a fabulous dress and she looks great. It is a little stiff, but the print is so good it doesn’t matter.

    • BayTampaBay

      One again, the shoes suck!

The color works but…………..she needed booties like the model wears or cage boot sandals.

    • Erica_Vuitton

Hum.. I’m going to respectfully disagree. I loved it until I saw the skiers. Great accessories though. But are those the only shoes Casadei makes?

    • NYCGlamourpuss

STOP BEING ORANGE!! Jesus CHRIST, she’s a young, beautiful girl in a fantastic dress, and all I can think of is – why does she have herself bronzed to the color of boot leather??

      • kathrineb

Agreed! Leather looking skin is most unflattering!

    • veriance

I like the dress. Her skin color otoh, she’s twenty different shades of bronzer.

    • paginatrix

She looks like she goes to The Orange Place with Michael Kors.

    • amanda lynn

oh my god i love that dress!

    • pop_top

Her makeup is fabulous here. I hope she returns to this look more often.

    • MartyBellerMask

Satin shoes are popular right now. We are going to have to live with it. (But we don’t have to love it.)

    • Janet B

      One of her better looks.

The dress could be a bit more fitted at the waist.

    • ErmengardeGreen

She looks like she’s related to Jennifer Aniston, somehow, here. Misc. casting suggestion.

    • mhleta

This is a WERQ for me except for one thing: Sarah dear, please listen to your liver-spotted, self-appointed auntie who thought slathering herself in Johnson’s Baby Oil and lying around on the beach all summer was a fantastic idea–FOR THE SAKE OF THE LONG AND PROSPEROUS CAREER YOU WISH TO HAVE IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA, PLEASE STAY OUT OF THE SUN AND ALWAYS WEAR SUNSCREEN ANYWAY, GODDAMIT!! Trust me, those little bronzed legs of yours will look like beef jerky by the time you’re 30 if you don’t heed this warning.

    • rh33

      She did it! Hooray!

    • jmorino08

I love it! Especially for a Teen Vogue event. Youthful, yet high fashion. Brava!

    • kolokOlchik

I actually love it! I think she shape is simple enough and the print is really fun so she looks fresh and contemporary, instead of sexy doll. And the makeup is very nice too

    • anotherkate

I love this unreservedly. Okay, except for the shoes. I have reservations about the shoes, but only their texture, not their color.

Also: is she or is she not the brunette version of Amanda Seyfried? They could play life-size doll sisters in a movie. A very creepy movie.

    • jw_ny

dress is really cute on her, but man…she’s really gone overboard with the spray tanning.

    • kathrineb

I don’t think the print is that nice from a distance but I do love the people skiing. Killer shoes though, in a great colour!

    • Cathy S

      Love it.
