Rita Ora in Etro at the 2013 GQ Men of the Year Awards

Posted on September 04, 2013

Miss Rita has a request to make:

Rita Ora attends the 2013 GQ Men of the Year Awards at The Royal Opera House in London in Etro.

Etro Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Martha Hunt

“All eyes on me, bitches.”

As attention-seeking looks go, this one’s tough to beat. We don’t love the dress, though. There’s an awkwardness to the shape and the beading pattern. It’s striking, but it’s not quite pretty to our eyes. A little too sci-fi queen.

We’re crazy about the hair and makeup, though. She really nailed that part, which is refreshing, because she never seems to get her hair and makeup quite right for her. What do the Bitter Kittens think of her eye makeup? We dig it. It’s clearly not for everyone, but she’s got the look for it.

I didn’t know they made eyelid-sized windshield wipers, that’s so cute!

    • Jessica Freeman

      Can’t unsee now.

    • Anathema_Device

I was thinking it looks like the markings plastic surgeons do before surgery.

      • Kristin McNamara

Oh my god I’m an IDIOT. Why I didn’t see this, literally one inch away from my post is utterly embarrassing. Sorry!! Now it won’t let me delete!! ^#+}€><^+<¥}€!^["&$):!;!&:

        • Anathema_Device

Eh, no sweat. Great minds and all that. I sometimes miss posts similar to mine b/c they get buried with this new comments layout. Fret not!!!!

      • filmcricket

Never having had it or watched “Nip/Tuck” I am unfamiliar with these markings you speak of, but either way: not really what you want folks to think of when they look at you. : )

    • Kristin McNamara

To me they look like the marks they draw on you when you go in for plastic surgery. “So what we’re gonna do is just a little nip here…”

  • Karen Belgrad

I can’t decide if she’s a Stryper fan or if it’s a John Belushi tribute.

  • Diego!

RuPaul’s Drag Race red carpet event!!! I don’t like her make up at all, but the dress looks great on her. She kinda reminds me of Rihanna.

    • I momentarily mistook her for RiRi.

      • Diego!

You see? I was right then! 😛

      • But the other day, we were mistaking her for Beyonce. Between her and Gaga, ya never know who you’re looking at.

        • demidaemon

Well, Gaga always kind of looks like Gaga. I mean no one else goes out intentionally looking like a runway model or a freak from a back alley interchangeably. Rita, on the other, hand rarely looks like herself. She always slightly resembles Rihanna or Beyonce, which is bad for a career where recognizability is two-thirds of the game.

    • StellaZafella

      RiRi wannabe,
don’t look now but your not she.

The eye gimmick looks like half reading glasses painted on…I guess it’s just my age.

She can be a really pretty woman on her own when she stops channeling other people’s looks…including drag queens.

    • Karen Belgrad

I always mistake her for Rihanna. Mostly because I only know Rita exists from this site 🙂

      • Jessica Freeman

Admittedly, I only know most new celebs thanks to the Uncles.

      • Diego!

hahahaha I loved your comment, you were harsh! hahaha I agree, Rita is… what the heck is she? An actress? A singer? A red carpet volunteer? I don’t know!

        • demidaemon

She’s a singer I believe, though I have never heard a single song from her.

          • Diego!

That says that her current job is ‘Red Carpet Attendee’.

          • demidaemon

  • Rand Ortega

Love the makeup. But she’s morphing into Beyonce. It’s either a weird movie about becoming a clone of celebrities more successful than you are or a remake of “SWF”

    • Diego!

She wishes she is morphing into Beyonce, she is reaching Solange Knowles!

  • I love the hair and make up a good deal. The dress? Where it fails for me is that tone of yellow, which is not her bestie. Had it been in a more golden shade of yelow, rather than screaming lemon, It might have been better for her.

    • Stacy C

      Agreed.. makes her look jaundiced.

  • Jacquelyn

I think the makeup works for this dress but as a standalone, not so much. Her hair looks good. The dress is an eyesore.

  • Trisha26

From the waist up the dress looks freakishly like a skeleton! The entire look, gown & matching sparkle shoes (!), makeup, earrings would have better suited her at the MTV VMAs last week. This is entirely too OTT here.

    • kimmeister

I saw skeleton too – it’s like the gown version of something one would wear to a freaky rave with glow in the dark skeleton clothes.

    • Qitkat

I thought the same thing. I even counted the ribs! Too many!

  • charlotte

This would be the right dress if she wanted to propose to Sting.

    • Rhonda Shore

I’d love to see what she rejects as being too tacky.

  • P B

What is the plot of that sci-fi film? Alien bees invade planet Earth? “Waspnado,” and Rita plays their Queen?

    • Tess Danesi

  • ringthing

That dress would give any woman linebacker shoulders. The windshield washer eyeliner is good for her look, but can’t see it translating very well to real life.

    • kimmeister

The sleeves are also making her arms look huge.

  • formerlyAnon

I really like the hair and eye makeup on her. I’d go so far as to say I love this hair.

I really like this dress, though it does not flatter her midsection (she still looks perfectly thin – but some people just are thicker waisted by nature) – and I do not want to see underboob, especially when it looks like it’s peeping out because the dress is a tad too small for her chest.

I can’t help it, I continue to have irrational liking for this one and possibly judge leniently.

    • 3boysful

I like the idea of it, but the boxy torso and underboob killed it for me.

      • RebeccaKW

I think the dress would be helped immensely if it was full coverage. No cut out sides, no missing back. I think the cutouts just add a distracting tone to an already overly busy dress.

        • demidaemon

It does look like they made a mistake somewhere in the bodice and just decided to cut it out rather than attempt to repair it, and needed to cut out the other half to retain the dress’ symmetry.

  • gabbilevy

Rita Ora, starring in… Enders Game: Beyond the Thunderdome

(Which I would totally pay money to see, BTW.)

  • mjude

i always love a good eye makeup.

    • Wasn’t this eye treatment on one of the Project Runway models last week or the week before?

  • random_poster

She nailed it on the hair. It’s perfect for the look, which is strange because I don’t care for the look at all.

  • Kent Roby

Wasn’t that makeup done on one of the models of PR this past week? I don’t love it, but it’s different. And the dress doesn’t look good to me, either on her or the model, but it certainly serves its purpose of grabbing attention. The more I see of Rita, the less I “get” who she is.

  • MaggieMae

It’s the liner on the eyelids that takes it into Sci-Fi territory for me. Striking dress.

  • Sobaika

    Perfect makeup. She nailed it.

  • decormaven

It’s an interesting dress, and the make/up hair are spot on. Just wish there was less glimpse of underboob. She’s getting closer to a WERQ here.

  • Her chest is being ripped apart by yellow-taloned aliens and her shoes match the dress exactly. But going not-obviously-sexy to this event was a good move, I think.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I think the eye make up is cool

  • ventureforth

LOVING the dramatic cut crease! It’s a hard look to pull off but she is absolutely working it here.

  • Jessica Freeman

I really think if this was knee length, it would have been a knock out. This doesn’t seem like a floor length gown event.

  • aahlife

All that stripey yellow and black, in her hair, earrings and dress, is just too much. It overwhelms and distracts from her pretty face which color palette is pale in comparison. There was a similar eyeliner treatment for one of the models on Project Runway last week.

I do not like her shade of blond, it has a greenish cast and does not look healthy. Personally, I would like to see her with her true dark hair color, it would be much more flattering with her beautiful skin color.

  • SugarSnap108

Her hair and eye makeup remind me of Denise Huxtable. This is a good thing.

  • Beardslee

  • Lilithcat

Is bottom boob now replacing side boob as a fashion faux pas?

But, seriously, other than that? I really do like this. I’m not sure why; I usually don’t go for the crazy. But somehow this truly works on her.

    • MoHub

Both seem to be more of a “thing” than a faux pas. Not that I like either. It just looks like bad fitting to my jaded eye.

    • I believe we call it “underboob”.

      • demidaemon

  • Imasewsure

I went “ooohh interesting” when I saw the makeup up close. Fun for this venue I think and I kind of dig the dress too

  • Anathema_Device

I think she looks kind of jaundiced. I will always and forever hate flesh colored lips. So, I guess I’m giving the makeup a thumbs down. The eye makeup is okay. Subtly over the top, if that makes sense.

I actually don’t totally mind the dress. I mean, I don’t like it, but it works on her and with her schtick.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m fine with the eye makeup, but the lipstick is too pale and I don’t like the color of her hair, either. The way she has it styled with the swoop is kinda cool, but the dye job needs work.

  • kimmeister

The earrings are literally the only thing I like about this look. The makeup is terrible. I don’t know why this girl only seems to have two colors for lips: fire engine red, or the exact color of her skin.

  • Tess Danesi

It’s definitely arresting but I kind of hate it. I have a feeling that in person, the beading is so beautifully done that maybe it compensates for the bee/zebra/rib cage combo thing going on. The more I look at it, the more I am disturbed by it at a gut level. Really odd to be effected by a dress so much.

  • MsMajestyk

Dig the dress. Not nuts about the hairstyle or color. Her stomach looks a little orange compared to her face and maybe that’s just a shadow. I like the eye makeup, but the rest of her face looks flat.

  • MilaXX

I love the face. It’s the same look the L’oreal guy did for Helen’s makeup. I wish the dress was a solid black. The yellow doesn’t really work with her skin coloring and it’s distracting with the cut outs.

    • housefulofboys

Totally agree on the color, there aren’t many people who can wear that shade. And she isn’t one of them.

  • Qitkat

It truly must have been one of the most eye-catching dresses at an event where everyone is trying to upstage one another. What I like is that she has completely owned this look. I think she (or her stylist) thought carefully about every single element and brought their A Game. It’s perfectly rendered for all the drama it creates, and she also chose how to pose in it as if it were the most beautiful gown in the world. Since she clearly is a woman who loves dramatic presentations, this comes as close to a werq as she may ever get. I’m impressed.

    • demidaemon

I think, though, that the dress may be too problematic on a design level for it to be a WERQ. She gets the “making a statement” WERQ, but not the “Wow, you look smashing” WERQ.

      • Qitkat

  • Little_Olive

What variety designers present us with.
    – Queen bee goes to town: check.
    – Dress that deprives the wearer of a waist: check.
    Now combine!

  • mmebam

    I’m digging the sci-fi queen.

  • Nancer

I LOVE this look! I am all about the sci-fi bee queen! Perfect place to deploy such an attention grabbing dress. More of this on the runways, please!

  • The dress, I don’t mind. The makeup, I do not care for.

  • Janet B

    Not her yellow.

  • homofascist

I occasionally like really whack-a-doodle dresses (see Richie, Nicole) and this one is really working for me. I would honestly call this a WERQ, IMHO.

  • majorbedhead

Well, since the first thing out of my mouth was “What is going on with her eye makeup?” I’m going with I don’t like it. It’s like she’s got two eyebrows on each eye. And I don’t like the dress at all.

  • marlie

    80’s Dynasty realness.

  • Tatiana Luján

I dig the whole look, minus the sideboob.

    • NoveltyRocker

      And underboob.

  • NoveltyRocker

That socket-line liner isn’t in the right spot. Wonder why she didn’t simply go the full effort and shade and blend for the effect of widening the lids like the 60’s look.

  • alyce1213

    Irrational hate. Or maybe rational.

    • Pennymac

Totally rational. She bugs. Dress is…..odd, at best.

  • MarissaLG

I don’t love this. Her boobs look smushed and I really don’t like the yellow color in the gown. I also think her makeup looks way caked-on. (That may be the difference between photos/irl though).

  • I wish the makeup followed the shape of her brows or her eyes – that line doesn’t seem to relate to anything in her face structure, which makes it clunky.
The dress says “LOOK AT MY RIBS” which is weird.
Hair looks good but the yellow of the dress clashes with her hair – pity.

  • shelbywoo

hate the eye makeup. I’m a fan of creative liner, but that just looks half assed to me.

  • quiltrx

I like the *idea* of the dress. I think if the color contrast were lower, I would like it better.
But they need to do something about the cutouts, because I find underboob unacceptable. particularly if I can see it from the FRONT.

  • the only thing im not feeling here are the cutouts at the side. yeah, theyre not technically cutouts, but thats what they look like from the front.

  • Monday1900

The eye makeup is the best part of the look for me.

  • amanda lynn

    seriously; who is she?

  • housefulofboys

I love her hair (wouldn’t wear it in a million years, but it works on her), her makeup is pretty cool, too. But why paint her nails petal pink, which doesn’t match her skin or the dress or the styling? I can’t think of an outfit which calls for black nails more than this one.

  • snarkykitten

I’m not sure why, but the dress strikes me as something you’d wear on NY’sE

  • gailfl87

This dress looks like it comes with sound effects. Maybe because it reminds me of Sheldon Cooper’s Doppler Effect costume from the Big Bang Theory, but I wouldn’t be able to wear it without making all kinds of strange racecar/spaceship noises.

  • Trickytrisha

As someone who hates it when my roots start to show, this hair makes my eyes twitch. The shape is great, just can’t get with the two toned look that so many celebs wear. But, most of them don’t match their hair to their dress, so extra points to her for that. Love the makeup. She’s always interesting.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

It seems like in the past month or so, she’s been really nailing her hair and makeup. New staffing perhaps?

    • demidaemon

Now she just needs to work on her stylist and/or her own taste.

  • Constant Reader

The pattern on that dress is giving me a migraine.

  • conniemd

  • She’s going for it. And frankly, at this type of event, that’s her job. I have completely forgotten about Rosie and I am pretty sure that is what Ms. Ora was going for.

  • Pterodactyl111

I like the hair, but I think the eye make up is stupid. The dress is ugly too.

  • NinjaCate

Hate the makeup, but the hair is spectacular. She looks better IMHO when she tames it a bit. Or maybe I’m just bored of the way she usually wears it? I think she has more versatility style wise than she allows herself to explore.

  • Sadie-Ann

There is something about the pattern of the dress that tricks me into thinking her head is on backwards.

  • Shawn EH

Maybe the best ever for her; too much gold bling with the gold hair and gold dress pattern, though. Matchy-matchy.

  • Miranda

    This hurts my eyes.

  • oohsparkley!

I dig the eye makeup. It’s a striking look and one of her better ones.

  • Beverly Kozma

That dress says, “Step to the side. Please step to the side.”

  • manina

    One word: Skeletor.
