Pairs Division: Scarlett Johansson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt at the Don Jon Premiere

Posted on September 12, 2013

We just can’t put our finger on why, but these two make such an odd pairing to us. The first time we saw the trailer for this film we found it a little jarring. It’s like they don’t quite occupy the same celebrity world.

Scarlett Johansson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt at the “Don Jon” Premiere during the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. Scarlett Johansson is in head-to-toe Saint Laurent.

What can you say about two good-looking twenty-somethings dressed nicely, if a bit on the standard side? She’s still working that post-engagement glow, which makes us wonder if she’s not something of a Liz Taylor type. Sure, that’s a bit cynical of us, but she only ever seems to come off as a happy person when she’s in love. Just sayin’, is all. But yeah, she looks sexy and happy here, if not particularly stylish. Don’t really like the hair at all. She always seems to go for these pinned up do’s, which do nothing for her facial features.

He is serving JGL. It’s kind of his schtick now. If that sounds dismissive, it’s not meant to be. He’s got such a firmly established style – and at a really young age too – that there’s little left to say about it. We’ve seen more interesting suits and ties coming from him, but we certainly can’t find fault with anything he’s doing here.

We’d say they collectively rate about a 9/10. To be honest, that feels a little generous, given the lack of interest overall, but objectively, we just can’t look at the two of them and say they really look bad in any way. Serviceable style.

    • Nicholas

Probably because you wouldn’t ever expect to see them in the same movie.

    • Emily Dagger

Tsk. Poor thing ruined her dress and had to leave the room wrapped in a stylish black hotel towel.

    • Gus Casals

I like them both, and there is some subtle detailing in her bustier that doesn’t photograph that well but goes beyond the simplicity. Well done.

    • AnneNotHathaway

BRB, photoshopping my face on ScarJo’s body and pretending that standing next to JGL is my life.

    • Jacquelyn

Yeah, when I think JGL I think indie films (not a bad thing) but when I think Scarlett Johansson I tend to think big budget blockbusters (still not a bad thing). You’re right TLo, they don’t occupy the same sphere to celebrity.

Clothing wise: she is gorgeous, as always.
He is totally himself, and adorable.

      • foodycatAlicia

And for some reason I think of him as goofy man-child and her as sophisticated adult. I am genuinely surprised to find that she is younger than him.

        • Jacquelyn

          She is????? News to me.

          • Slanted & Enchanted

JGL is actually in his 30s. Surprise, surprise.

        • Derek_anny

Man-child I can see. But I don’t get goofy. Goofy man-child makes me think of Downey. JGL is more man-child in the style of Richard Branson, in that they both have enough talent/power to enjoy their life as they live it. It’s that fun and enjoyment that come across as childlike, because the real world of adulthood makes them difficult to maintain as constants.

          • foodycatAlicia

I’ve only seen him in 500 Days of Summer!

            • Derek_anny

He plays a (charming) Mormon homophobe in Latter Day Saints, but most of what I know of adult JGL is his hitRECord stuff. I rather like his cover of Gaga’s Bad Romance. (Of course there’s Third Rock and 10 Things, but he was still young)

            • annabelle archer

Give 50/50 a go. He was great in that. I’ve been a fan since his 3rd Rock From the Sun Days, but it’s been hard for me to see him as an adult. Looper also helped. But then I just saw him as Bruce Willis.

      • TheatreChick73

They are long time friends though. But I was surprised to find that out. It does seem like an odd pairing overall.

        • ana170

They’re both former child actors. It makes sense that they’d know each other. They all seem to.

    • annabelle archer

She is rocking the sex bomb thing with vengeance. He is rocking my heart, because he nearly always does. I am actually looking forward to this movie and that’s not something I ever say if she is in it.

      • imspinningaround

Right? My only thought at looking at her was “Ohhhhhhh Goddddd, so hotttttttttt, brain meltinggggggg…”

    • MilaXX

I want to not feel as bland as it does. It’s like all the assorted parts should feel greater to me than it does.

    • Paige @ LPD

That dress needs big hair, and the pearls are so wrong for it. It’s so suburban girl goes clubbing.and JGL is just washed out as ever here.

    • Karen Belgrad

She borrowed Jennifer Aniston’s nude bath towel and dyed it black.

    • vidacelina

I’m totally bored, which I shouldn’t be, considering these two are incredibly good-looking.

      • Tom Shea

To me it’s because she looks bored too. In most of the pictures she looks like she’d rather be anywhere else. But she’s bangin’ anyway.

        • sweetestsith

Honestly, girl looks stooooned most of the time. She has been looking pretty fabulous lately, but…stoned. Which is fine in private time, but bugs me on the red carpet. If its part of your job, you should probably be sober. Makes me feel old and crotchety.

Anyways. I love this dress on her, but actually really hate the shoes with it. I find them very jarring, and would have encouraged her to pick something else.

    • 3boysful

Scarlett looks fine, but it’s Jen’s dress, and Charlize’s hair. Scar-Jo looks better with a softer ‘do.

      • LesYeuxHiboux

I was thinking a flatter, tamer version of Miley’s hair. Which is not something I’d want anyone thinking about my hair.

    • foodycatAlicia

The pearls and up-do are a little young-matron.

    • Diego!

Both of them look great but Scarlett’s make up and hair are kinda odd, don’t they? Joseph looks stunning! I love his hair this way

    • LaSylphide

She has a bigger head than he does. Does that mean anything?

    • MaggieMae

He is delicious. I like the way the closer you get to him, the more details pop out in his clothes.

    • Guest

JGL is not that young. He is 32. His face just doesn’t know it yet.

      • Nikko Viquiera

        god, he’s 32?!

        • OatsnPebbles

    • Tatiana Luján

is the skirt of her dress supposed to fold like that? I don’t like it.

    • OatsnPebbles

JGL is not that young. He is 32. His face just doesn’t know it.

      • OatsnPebbles

my comments are getting all messed up…

    • Jessica Freeman

I saw the trailer for the movie and wondered why he chose her…the chemistry is certainly off…

    • annejumps

lol at the petty complaints here.

      • mightbewrong

        You must be new here.

    • Mrs. Julien

Pinstripe suit, tartan tie, and a check shirt may be standard for him, but how many actors would you love to see have this much going on in what they wear.

      • marlie

Right? Considering how so many of the other guystars dress, I’ll take a JGL standard/”of course” any day over most of his peers.

    • SugarSnap108

Yeah, they are a bit odd together. I think it’s because she’s so va-va-va-voom and he’s so a-dor-dor-dor-dorkable.

    • Tracy_Flick

This may be a dumb question, but what’s the red button thing on his lapel?

      • DTLAFamilies

        It’s for his website, hitRECord.

    • Imasewsure

Think you are being a little generous since her look rates much lower in my book. He looks great as usual (although a bit swarmy?) but I do hope he starts to change it up a bit in the future.

    • Lenora Dody

I was watching old Family Ties and it had a very little Joseph Gordon-Levitt on it. He is very identifiable and cute!

      • oohsparkley!

He was also in 3rd Rock from the Sun. Adorable.

        • Lenora Dody

I know, I got to go to the filming of that show once.

    • aahlife

Their body language speaks volumes. Awkward and uncomfortable together.

    • neonseattle

her dress looks terrible in that walking shot. it looks like a Vegas clubbing outfit and she threw on pearls to class it up.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Is it because he is down to Earth, personable, and collaborative while she is so far up her own ass we’ve had to file a missing persons report?

      • ashtangajunkie

I don’t know if any of what you posted is true, but it is absolutely hilarious.

    • Kent Roby

While they make an odd “real life” couple, their red-neck characters seem to work well on screen (from the movie trailer, at least). I just think he is the coolest cutest thing ever, but have never cared for any of her post-Pearl Earring work except for her hosting of SNL.

      • marlie

They’re not rednecks; they’re “Jersey.” WAAAAY different. ;)

        • demidaemon

That’s just slang for urban redneck, heh. And I say this as a diehard fan of RHONJ. I just can’t quit it!

    • DTLAFamilies

He looks thrilled to be there.

    • mmebam

Her head looks awkward to me. The peach lip and updo don’t go together at all.

    • Richard Banger

Scarlett is serving up HOT. That’s a Klum dress. Probably to remind the denographic of this movie (men) just hot hot she is.

    • fringebenefit

Gorgeous! No chemistry between them, but gorgeous individually. So right, TLo, about her and the Liz Taylor syndrome. That seems spot on.

    • marlie

I think he looks great, but JGL in a suit always makes me happy. She almost looks like the “dressed up” version of her character; she doesn’t usually go for short AND tight AND boobalicious.

    • marshmallowjane

The movie trailer creeped me out and burned my eyes. I have a vision of him that won’t go away.

    • ErmengardeGreen

They look like their own Real Dolls.

    • Shawn EH

Maybe we’re just not so used to her in comedies, but Avengers showed just how good her timing can be (you have to be able to verbally spar in a Whedon film). While he’s always laughing at some private joke (not in a bad way, he’s already earned it).

    • Erica_Vuitton

Him: Yum. Yum. Yum. One of my first celeb crushes ever from way back on “3rd Rock”.
Her: Pretty but like i said previously, getting very generic.

He said she was the only one he ever wanted for this role but maybe that was just wishful thinking because I don’t see any chemistry here. Not even faked-for-the-cameras actor chemistry.

      • filmcricket

He’s directing his first film and chose a hottie to make out with: pretty standard move, really. Male directors love her because she’s curvy and has that voice.

    • nannypoo

I really hate her hair and agree with TLo that updos, especially that bumpit style she seems to favor, do nothing for her face. Otherwise she looks just OK. He always looks cute.

    • Aurumgirl

I don’t think they like each other much.

    • Heather

He looks young and innocent, and I would corrupt him terribly.

    • fiddlecub

9/10? Meh. That’s the kind of grade you need to work for. These two are Jolie-ing it up. You gotta earn that 9!

    • frannyprof

      Zero chemistry between these two.

    • stephbellard

QUE BELLA! And yeah OK Scarlet is pretty too…

    • Trickytrisha

He’s such a laid back cutie pie, like that best friend who is always unflappable and brings you donuts. Adorable guy.

She, on the other hand, needs to look at her pics and decide to never ever again wear her hair this way. So unflattering. She’s usually impeccable, but this is a bit of an off day – maybe it’s the slightly smug look. Her body language is interesting… leaning away from him in their pictures together.

    • CatherineRhodes

Wait, can’t they get marked down for being boring? She’s wearing a LBD with black pumps and he looks like a bank manager. Yawn.

    • quiltrx

I don’t care for her pleated bath towel. Send it to Aniston, who will also do nothing with it.
      He’s adorable, all the time.

    • Jacob Bowen

The 10 hour JGL night I had a few months ago was thoroughly enjoyable. He might be my #1 Hollywood Crush…..but Chris Evans gives him a HELL of a run for his money.

    • unbornfawn

JGL usually puts some effort in, and I appreciate that, He almost always looks good. SJ – meh

    • kathrineb

Scarlett Johanssons outfit is truly bland/devoid style. I see a lot of girls in my city in those shoes and that tube kind of dress.
