Pairs Division: Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth at the Romeo and Juliet Premiere

Posted on September 25, 2013

Well, they’re a pretty couple of star-cross’d lovers, aren’t they?

Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth attend the “Romeo and Juliet” Los Angeles Premiere. Hailee is wearing a Prabal Gurung dress from the Spring 2014 collection paired with Brian Atwood shoes and a Cathy Waterman ring. Douglas is in head-to-toe Tom Ford.

SPOILER: They both die at the end.

Is it us or do they both need a lesson in proportion? We’re a little surprised by Hailee, although much as we love her style, she has been known to go questionable. We’re just not loving her dress. All the embellishments look haphazard, we don’t love the length on her, and weird neckline is weird. Also: big, clunky shoes with that hem. Score: 6.5/10 – and most of that’s hair and makeup.

He purdy. But look: we love a really slim-cut suit on a slim-cut young guy. It’s a great look; especially if you’ve got the kind of Euro-good looks that go with it. There’s a reason these types of suits always look good on pouty-faced teenagers from Eastern Europe walking a runway. But it really doesn’t look right with such a wide tie; especially when the tie, shirt and pocket square are all competing prints. And the jacket vaulted past “slim cut” and landed squarely on “too damn tight.” Kudos for keeping such a busy look unified by toning the colors down – and we do appreciate what he’s going for here – but ultimately, it all looks ill-fitting and askew. Score: 7.5/10. Not because of his pretty face, but because with only slight adjustments, this could be a killer-chic look for him.

Combined Score: 7/10 – and frankly, that seems a tiny bit generous overall.

Someone turned a scrapbook from the 80’s into a dress and Hailee Steinfeld is wearing it.

    • Anna Vasquez

Yeah, I think I had the Trapper Keeper of that dress.

      • allcapsERINN

        My thoughts exactly! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Denise Plank

80’s castoffs with platform pumps, and baby Jonny Lee Miller.

    • NoveltyRocker

Ew, he does look like Jonny Lee Miller! Ew because of the hair, it’s just so unflattering and sadly, so iconic to Jonny Lee.

  • Jacquelyn

Hailee go home and try again.

  • melanie0866

    Star-crossed eyebrows!

    • Constant Reader

Is it me, or do they look like they went to the salon together and had matching threading done?

  • d4divine

His head looks huge…actually they both look a bit stumpy

  • Tracy_Flick

Trapper keeper dress. Not the worst thing I’ve ever seen, but not much to recommend it.

    • Anna Vasquez

Just saw this after I typed nearly the same thing. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • bellafigura1

Harumph, he is, as my sainted father used to say, a little too “handy” with her.

  • Frank_821

It’s not just the jacket that’s too tight! ๐Ÿ™‚

That dress needs to be shorter by a good 12 inches, then it would work way better on her

    • Persiaa

Length is my main objection to the dress. She looks as if she were playing dress up with mom’s clothes

  • Nope. Trends thrown in a blender and poured over a couple of overly pretty people.

  • Janet B

Oh boy. That’s an ugly dress that’s too long, plus ugly shoes too.
Too bad his suit doesn’t fit, it’s almost a great look.

  • shirab

Look at her luxurious hair and her perky little tushie! Ah, to be whatever age she is again.

  • Judy_S

I like that dress on her. It’s a bizarre dress, with the pink glitter and the sophisticated-lady neckline, but she seems aware of its silliness.

  • Jessica Freeman

Her dress is a star cross lover.

  • Chuck Barthelme

His wide-arse tie is the first thing I noticed. I love the pattern mixing, but wide ties with slim lapel suits do not go. And yeah, too tight with the jacket buttoned. Hailee is doing about the best she can with that weird dress. It’s not bad exactly, but it isn’t good either.

  • GillianHolroyd

That is a damn ugly dress, who made i…..ah.

She would’ve been better off in Pippa’s McQueen.

  • Erica_Vuitton

I know I’m not going to get any love for this, but I hate how she dresses. She’s 16 going on 35 in these mature lengths. I’m not saying she should be in mini dresses and hooker heels because I know she has better style than that, but I wish she would dress a bit more fun. There is only so much time to get away with wearing clothes only a 16 year old can wear. Embrace it. There is plenty of time to look 35… aka in 20 years when you’re actually 35.

He is too pretty. For me, no one other than Leo will ever be Romeo.

  • oat327

I’d kill for his outfit, if I had a better tailor, a skinny tie, and a different pocket square. But he really is pretty.

    Her dress is, um.

  • demidaemon

That spoiler alert is a classic!

Also, if he gets naked at any time in this film (I remember watching a film version in 9th grade where there was plenty of nudity and sex thrown around–AWESOME), I will drop all my irrational hatred for this piece of Shakespeare’s dramas. It would be so worth it to see what is underneath his clothes. Sorry, feeling shallow before work today.

  • fashionfootie

Loves me some Douglas Booth! But I agree with you comments. He usually does so much better.

    • The critical thing, for this movie anyway, is: how’s he look in tights?

      • fashionfootie

I think he will look excellent in them. I saw the trailer but I wasn’t concentrating on his tights.

  • gabbilevy

Sorry, I can’t hear you past his preeeettttttyyy eyes.

(I still will not be seeing this movie — I’m furious at Sir Julian for thinking he can “improve upon the original Shakespeare.” Seriously.)

  • Clair Ellis

He’s so pretty!! I agree with the tie, it’s too wide. But that’s face is stunning.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

that body language makes it pretty clear that he’s been montaguing her capulet. clearly an item. a purdy purdy item.

  • BayTampaBay

Why do all these red-carpet people (Oprah & Jane Fonda excluded) wear shoes that are two sizes too big?

Even if they arr freebies, you would think the designers(or stylists) could send the correct size

  • Trickytrisha

Speaking up for the Opposition here… I adore this dress and her in it. The dress has a just a hint of a similarity to a Kandinsky painting ca. 1923 or so, thus giving me a happy. The length of the dress is dictated by the design, I think, so it’s just fine for me. I even like the shoes. Her face and hair are lovely. He’s appropriately dishy.

    • Lisa_Co

I agree with you trickytrisha, except on her shoes (which I find clunky). I also love what I can see of the back of the dress, with the wide periwinkle and narrow black stripes.

  • ShaoLinKitten

He is so pretty that I had a hard time focusing on the suit, which let’s face it, looks cheap. The puckering along the inner seam, combined with the shininess of the fabric, was no bueno. Also, do not like the wideness of the tie. Hailee’s dress is terrible.

  • MilaXX

She looks dressed for the prom, not liking the length or the clunky shoe. 6.5/10
He just missed the mark. Jacket too tight & tie too wide. Also giving off slight a scent of douche. 6.5/10
Do better young’uns! Total score 6.5/10

    • kmk05

I thought I was the only one getting ‘douche’ off him! I hate her shoes, and the dress length is awkward. I actually like his competing prints but that tie doesn’t work, and the suit is too small. 6/10, pretty young people with better lives than mine! I don’t know if I’m just cranky or what.

  • stubbornthoughts

Am I the only one noticing the bulge? IT’S STARING ME IN THE FACE.

    • sagecreek

      SCrolled back up…you’re not wrong.

    • conniemd

I’m guessing that he spent the time in the limo wishing he had sex with her or couldn’t want until this was over so the could get back in the limo.

  • teensmom99

Not trying to be a contrarian, but I think she looks better than I’ve seen in ages. I think the dress is nutty but sort in a way that a teenager can wear nutty. It would be too sophiitcated if it were a solid color and even though I am okay with long it needs a bit of hemming–but I think the “all-over-the-placeness” is what makes it teenage-y. She has access to designer clothes most kids couldn’t even dream about and the stuff all over it keeps it fun. IMHO.

    • Yep. I’m totally with you. It is a nutty dress, and that’s what I like about it. She should wear wacky clothes while she can, so good for her.

I agree the dress is bit too long. That length is a tough one to pull off, and it’s one that’s best worn by an adult. But Hailee’s wearing it fairly well, IMO.

I haven’t been paying much attention lately to what celebrities are wearing, so maybe she’s made some bad choices recently. This would not be one of them.

  • decormaven

Aww, if that tie wasn’t so wide, and there was a bit better fit on the suit, his look would have outstanding! Her dress is pretty- but too long. More satin shoes- they should be renamed satan shoes, and be cast in the ring of fire.

  • I think she wants to be a fashionista and is just finding her way. I don’t really love the dress but it is sort of edgy with those shoes. I like it. Don’t like all that mass of hair though. And sorry, but that boy in that suit – cute, cute, cute.

  • That dress needs to be burned… : (

  • ljh

Showed the dress to my 13-year-old son just now. His response: “Why does it have a calendar on it?”

    • kimmeister

Ha, with certain weeks already highlighted as vacation weeks.

  • Imasewsure

Higher score seems good (and supportive) since they are both so young – and because they also made an effort even if it didn’t work as well as it could have. Very cute kids though. Keep it up!

  • kimmeister

Lawd, that guy is cute. He was also born in 1992, which makes me think I’ll get arrested for even having that thought. His outfit had such potential. Ship that tie to Henry Cavill, who has the barrel chested needed to pull it off.

    • kmk05

…1992? Brb, I’m getting the bleach for my brain and my impure thoughts.

  • kolokOlchik

Those two are seriously screwing each other. In fact, they had sex on the limo ride over

  • Alloy Jane

Her: Ugly dress, Bugs Bunny shoes, bad hair, weird makeup. Him: Invisible.

  • Kent Roby

Thanks to the spoiler I will have to skip this movie; next you’ll be telling me that the Titanic sinks at the end. But as far as these fetal “stars” go: they’re cute, annoyingly so, and they did a lovely job playing dress-up for this event. I assume this Romeo and Juliet is a continuation of the High School Musical franchise.

  • sagecreek

I feel really icky saying this about a child, but she is developing a lovely derriere.

And now I’m going to go take a shower. Ick. Sorry.

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, she is and that is why that stripe down the back of the dress is the best part of the dress. A few asymmetric stripes down the front and maybe just a couple of horizontals would have turned this into an updated Mondrian influenced dress instead of the scrapbooking dress.

  • Jai Piper

She could have improved the look by wearing her hair up. With the curls and the neckline, there’s just too much going on in that area.

The tie . . it’s almost clown proportioned. And are his slacks a tiny bit too short too?

  • sk8tfan

I had that dress back in the 80’s. I look back at the pictures in shame and so will she. Still, I love it about her that she’s not afraid to try different looks. One day she will be fierce. He’s gorgeous but I hate his hair. My conspiracy theory of the day is that the producers did that to hide the fact that he’s actually the prettier of the two.

  • nannypoo

Are they a real-life couple? At least as real-life as celebrities get? I ask because they are cute together. Her dress, though, is not so cute.

  • JP

Not crazy about the dress, but want the shoes.

  • mariahwg

He is dressed like and looks like a Korean boystar. I approve entirely. How can you look past that shirt/tie combo, which looks beautiful on him? I think the tie width is a bit of a detail to focus on, given how much everything else is working.

  • H2olovngrl

i think I would have scored her higher than him. That giant tie just looks idiotic.

  • macwell

I’m sorry, but – this is probably the ugliest dress I’ve seen on this site to date ๐Ÿ™

  • Lily-Rygh

Seriously one of the ugliest dresses I have seen in ages. Although I suppose it does deserve props for doing Frankendress in a new amd unpredictable way…

  • AnneElliot

His haircut is giving me a sad. It was so pretty in Great Expectations — why, why, WHY did he hack it off?

  • SorayaS

I know Leo had that cocky squint too but this kid looks way too douchey to be Romeo!

  • E2_Remote

So this tie, shirt and pocket square in competing prints may be some sort of “thing” right now, as I recently went suit shopping with my husband and at every store they were pushing that look.

  • bertkeeter

    PROM night!

  • LipstickForPigs

There is something about how she is styled that always bugs me.

  • Violentcello

God, another Romeo and Juliet? At least this isn’t high school and I’m being forced to read it yet again.

I actually like her dress. I agree it’s too long, but she looks pretty.

  • VicD

he looks like the spawn of Robert Pattinson and Justin Timberlake – who knew such a thing existed!?!

  • All the little embellishments on the dress are so tacky, but I think the thing that bothers me the most is the awkward length. She can do so much better!
