Nicole Richie in Jean Paul Gaultier at Nordstrom Gala Event

Posted on September 18, 2013

It’s DRAG AUTUMN in Nicole Richie’s world! Apparently!

Honestly, we can’t say we totally disapprove:

Nicole Richie attends the opening gala to benefit Ascencia and Hillsides at Nordstrom at The Americana at Brand in Glendale in a Jean Paul Gaultier turtleneck maxi dress paired with a House of Harlow 1960 clutch.

The dress is crazy fun. She went way overboard with the shoes, bag, and makeup, though. We’re all for the drag-glam, but a gal needs to apply these things judiciously. For instance, less tacky shoes and a face that doesn’t look like it got slapped recently.

    Why those shoes? Whyyyyy…

  • Sobaika

Fantastic dress. Too bad about everything else.

    • HVM

Read my mind 🙂 She’s come a long way from the Simple Life days.

    • I like the clutch and the dress. I even think they might work together. But it is time to replace the bulbs in her makeup mirror!

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I like the dress and her in the dress way more than I should. The shoes are awful…awful. The bag doesn’t go.

  • Anathema_Device

Not sure about the dress. It sort of has a morph-suit feel to it. Shoes and make up are awful.

  • Garcia Loca

Love the dress. Shoes… I don’t even know where to begin with the shoes.

    • decormaven

Seeing a lot of that print flying about after NYFW. While it’s nice to try to work in a trend, it was a push too far here. Too bad about the bag- it would be great with a different look.

  • 1970s rec room sofa realness. And yet, I still love it.

  • LJCdoc

Either she has very large feet for her height, or those shoes are way too big. Either way, they’re hideous. Also, I hate her hair, she looks like she mugged the neighborhood clown for his makeup, and I’m just generally way to crabby/tired today for these shenanigans.

    • kirkyo

You are mean but that made me laugh.

  • Sarah

    A turtle stole her neck!

    • Targettaste

I’m stressed just looking at that turtleneck swallowing her neck. I want to rip it away so she can get enough air!

      • Sarah

I hate turtlenecks for that reason. The too-young departed comedian Mitch Hedburg put it best, I think, when he said wearing one was like being strangled by a weak midget all day. (No offense intended to stranglers or midgets.)

  • conniemd

I really love this dress. Perfect for a woman of her age that doesn’t want to be dull and dowager.

    • Daisy Walker

      “Of her age”? She’s 31.

      • cluecat

Yes, over 30s should cover from neck to ankles so we don’t have to look at their elderly, wrinkled skin. /s

        • Daisy Walker

I know, right? Off to the glue factory with me!

        • Rhonda Shore

she’s much better looking w/far less makeup…she has really pretty coloring that’s lost here, in large part because of the bright lipstick, which is too much.

      • omg_dora

I think that was the joke. 🙂

        • Daisy Walker

Oh. Maybe so. Sarcasm on the interwebz is hard.

  • alyce1213

Great dress, but how I hate the too-long sleeves. Drives me crazy. Rachel Zoe does it too, all the time.
Love the little bag, but not with this dress. Hate the shoes.

    • Imasewsure

I think the super-skinny get cold and so they have to cover up… I wouldn’t know… it’s positively balmy in my world of average-sizeness!

      • alyce1213

But, but . . . cold back of hands?

        • Imasewsure

I’m afraid so… no baby fat stored anywhere to give them adequate heat for their tiny little hands

  • Random Compliments

Love the dress, love her, hate the shoes. Also, too much makeup!

  • hughman

I kinda love. It’s like old bat-shit Hollywood that Zsa Zsa might have worn.

    • Fanny_Trollope

It’s very Nicole. Not likey the shoes, though.

  • nannypoo

I love it. Who would have thought a few years ago, when she was running around acting like an idiot with Paris Hilton, that she would turn into someone interesting. Good on her.

  • MilaXX

I don’t mind the look, but her face has so much bronzer that she just looks greasy.

    • kmk05

The makeup is horrifying. The lashes, glitter, blush and lips AND bronzer is actually making her look ever so muddy!

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Bitch ain’t gonna LSFYL tonight and she knows it.

  • SugarSnap108

I kind of love that dress — though I think it would look better if it ended right above the knee. Everything else is just a big ole mess.

  • Lily-Rygh

Tragic accessorizing. Those shoes are making my feet cower in fear.

  • Trickytrisha

She’s a mite too vertically challenged to pull off this kind of dress, IMO. Dem shoes, uh uh. Dat makeup, double uh uh.

  • mlle

With the tight bun and pound of makeup, you’d think she was a ballerina from the neck up.

I kind of love the shoes, though not with this dress.

  • GillianHolroyd

She is being swallowed by that dress and the makeup is over-powering her as well.

  • Evan

Love the dress. I can live with the bag and makeup, but the shoes are a bridge too far. She should know that the dress is too busy for leopard print shoes. That’s a rookie mistake.

  • Linda LaPaz

Love the dress. I had one just like it in crushed velvet (!!!) in the 70s.

Her face is very asymmetrical – cover one half at a time and she looks like 2 different people! Not snarking, just remarking.

    • My first thought was also crushed velvet, but considering the weather this last week, I knew it couldn’t be.

  • Jacquelyn

The dress is excellent. Everything else is making me very unhappy.

  • maddie

Her video with RuPaul is hilarious!

  • i love the dress, but the makeup is making her look a bit “mature”. you know what i mean. the shoes don’t help.

  • Gina Mondzelewski Small

Apparently Nicole does not own a mirror. There’s no other explanation for going out looking like that.

  • bertkeeter

    Darker lip n it’s a WERQ!

  • Imasewsure

She’s fairly unrecognizable but I love everything but the shoes in a dragtastic way (I’m forgiving the bag since regular shoes might have made the bag ok too)

  • Targettaste

I love that clutch as much as I should never be allowed to have it. I would constantly be playing with the fringe.

  • MichelleRafter

Like the dress, hair & face combo – makes her look like Jasmine Guy in her A Different World era.

  • Violentcello

I like the dress, but I have to jump on the why-the-hell-did-she-choose-those-shoes bandwagon. Ugh.

  • formerlyAnon

If I could only fix one thing, face or shoes, I’d go with shoes. But both would better. Nonetheless, I think this is fabulous and fabulous on her.

  • fauxprah

a ‘ nordstrom gala event’…….ugh a good reason to stay home…..sounds contrived and overly made-up.

  • cluecat

No, do not like the dress. The print reminds me of a sofa from the ’80s and the cut makes her look like a bobblehead. The seam down the side makes the print look like badly done wallpaper. No no no.

  • LaSylphide

I like the wild and crazy dress, but who is their right might would pair it with leopard-print shoes?

  • jilly_d

    Smacked. Ass.

  • bellafigura1

Another person whose face does not look her face anymore!

  • Miranda

    Lord, That’s a busy dress.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I hardly recognize her, especially in the first shot. That is a lot of makeup. And while I like the dress, combining it with those shoes is making my eyes twitch.

  • clatie

Why do we like her again?

  • Fordzo

This is reminding me of Kim Kardashian’s rose dress that was made from a slipcover my grandmother used on her couch from 1977-98. This dress appears to be made from Granny’s curtains.

  • little britches

I wish she’d crowned this ensemble with her silvery bouffant from July’s Met Ball: impeccable bad taste.

  • unbornfawn

Great dress that fits beautifully. Horrible accessory choices. Same expression on her face in every picture is freaking me out.

  • Dagney

Love it. I would wear this. I have an affinity for overdone, when it’s done a certain way.

  • StaceyWOMC

    She looks like Gloria Estefan.

  • sagecreek

    She looks about 45 here.

  • MoHub

Like the dress but would like it better with a crewneck, as the collar looks as if it’s trying to eat her head. The shoes are stupid and competing; a plain black ballet would have finished off the look nicely.

  • Diego!

Those shoes are ruinning the whole look! She looks amazing until you see what she’s wearing in her feet. What a shame!!!

  • crash1212

Love this dress. Love. She’s killing it until the shoes.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Just when I thought Jennifer Aniston had the ugliest shoes I’ve ever seen, Nicole says “Check out these babies.” Pretty much ANYTHING else would’ve been better.

  • Jackie4g

She was a pretty young thing. Now she’s looking harsh. I think it must be the severe hairdo. I understand they didn’t want to complicate the hair as the dress is so busy, no wait, that’s not right, look at the crazy accessories. OK, I am thoroughly confused by the styling.

  • Tracy_Flick

The look is aging, but I can’t hate it. She looks like she’s having fun with it.

  • jw_ny

love the dress, but the entire look comes across as aging…like an eccentric 75 year old that has had tons of work done…

  • CommentsByKatie

Lol! I kind of love this for some reason!

  • marlie

Those shoes are wrong, wrong, wrong.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I only would change the shoes. I can’t help but cheer every time a celebrity goes full metal drag-queen.

  • LadyLuck777

She is reminding me of a 1990’s Paula Abdul.

  • livesarah

That’s some super-aging makeup on an already aging outfit right there. And there’s something about really petite women and turtlenecks- maybe it’s because their necks are shorter (not proportionally, just physically!), but turtleneck dresses and tops seem to make them look neckless.

I actually like this dress, I just don’t think it’s her dress.

  • The shoes on the runway model look great. No necklace, please.

As a rule, no big prints if you’re over a size12? What size did Tim say? The dark colors that blend together make it possible for someone to wear this large print. I’m not sure this person should be Nicole.

The large print trend is getting on my last nerve.

  • ballerinawithagun

I want this dress! I’m her size do you think she’ll gift it to me when she’s done?

  • kathrineb

What a godawful print. Offensive even.
