Nicole Kidman in Altuzarra at “The Railway Man” Premiere

Posted on September 09, 2013

It took us forever to figure out why this wasn’t wowing us. At first we thought it was the shoes:

Nicole Kidman attends the premiere of “The Railway Man”during the Toronto International Film Festival in an Altuzarra suite paired with Louis Vuitton shoes.

Altuzarra Resort 2014 Collection/Model: Manuela Frey

And it’s true that they are a bit of a problem. The outfit has an edge to it, which means prissy little bows on your feet don’t really make much sense. But that’s not the only, or even the most prominent thing that’s bothering us here. It’s the pants. We love ourselves a skinny pant on the right person, and Nicole is definitely the kind of gal who can rock them, but they’re simply not working with that jacket. We really think she needed the straight-legged pant with the slight flare to them. Gives the jacket a slightly edgier vibe to it. Pairing it with skinny pants just makes it go generic, to our eyes. Oddly enough – and this gives you some idea of how capricious style can be – the skinny pants make it look a little frumpy and mature, which are not normally words one associates with skinny pants.

Really great jacket, by the way.

  • Couldn’t agree more, gents. Its those slightly cropped skinny pants that ruin the whole thing.

    • Getoverit

The pants on the model look much better than the skinny crops.

      ps hate the shoes.

  • LadyCelia

As it stands, it looks like something that Holland Taylor would wear for a role. And she’s in her 70’s.

    • Imasewsure

But she would look great in this… it’s a Jane Fonda look too maybe…

    • largishbearishAtlish

      Holland is FIERCE!

    • ballerinawithagun

      Love Holland Taylor!

  • Flavia Pantoja

Yes, yes, and the shoes are… wrong. And the brooch is bothering me…

    • kimmeister

The brooch is the worst part of it, to me. The jacket already has enough going on with the lace inserts, it didn’t need the brooch.

  • poggi

Yep, but I kind of love those shoes with something else (like this great blue dress in my closet).

  • marlie

I actually love this. I think teh skinny pant and the jacket AND the shoes are great. What I have a problem with is her hair. I wish she’d stop frying it so.

    • 3boysful

I’m with you, Marlie. I just wish the sleeves were a teeny bit longer.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

All too tight. Shoes are lovely but gagging to walk off onto another outfit.

  • Randy Noak

I don’t particularly like the diamond covered unicorn poop she’s got serving as a broach.

  • Beth513

This is what her character in “too die for” would look like now.

  • ellabob

The pants are TOO short – cuts the line..

  • Rand Ortega

Ankles up– Flawless. A red (lace, maybe?) pump sans bow would’ve made this a WERQ.

  • alyce1213

It’s better with the long, slightly wide leg — more polished and better proportioned.
Um, I want that brooch please.

  • oklund

I love the outfit, but hate the brooch and the make-up. I think some better accessorizing could have made this a WERQ.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

Just get rid of the shoe bows and I think this looks about perfect (would be WERQ worthy if she would go back to a more reddish hair hue)

  • joything

If that’s frumpy and mature, lemme at it.

  • queeniethebold

Clearly in the minority here, but i love the pants and the jacket together as she has them. Shoes perhaps not so much, though i do love them. Maybe a pop-of-color shoe would’ve been better. But i actually like the lines in this better than the long-legged pantses.

  • Vaniljekjeks

I am distracted by the greatness of that jacket. It’s all I see. I need it. And by “it”, I mean the knockoff that will be gracing my local fast-fashion shops this spring. *Sigh*

  • fringebenefit

I think she looks terrific, head to toe.

  • hughman

I bet she sells TONS of condos on the UWS.

  • Nimble27

From the knees down she’s Elizabeth Montgomery in Bewitched.

    • Constant Reader

I was thinking the same thing!

  • carpediva

The jacket looks like it’s contracted necrotizing fasciitis.

  • MissusBee

If you can rock a skinny pant past a certain age, it’s probably hard not to. But the longer-line fitted jacket has a seventies feel to it which goes better with the flare. The skinny, shorter pants have a fifties/sixties vibe (which the bow pumps also seem to nod to) which, in the humblest of humble opinions, would go better with a shorter jacket.

    • alyce1213

Your opinion and analysis are spot on.

  • Meredith

Good job guys, I would have had the same weird feeling about this but not the understanding why.

  • steeg of their own

It’s the pants. The short pants make the shortish jacket sleeves look ill-proportioned instead of modern, and the lack of flare in the pants undercuts the flare at the bottom of the jacket. Why she didn’t wear the pants that were designed with the jacket is beyond me. The lace detailing of the pants on the model would have been an added bonus.

Cut the bows off the shoes and they’d be fine, but everything about the pants is wrong.

    • Synnae

I think she may not have been interested in showing the world her undies or landscaping 😉

  • Lilithcat

She also needs to take the brooch off the jacket. It’s distracting.

  • Synnae

I actually like the idea but the skinnies are just too short (as a fellow tall girl I so feel Nic’s issue) and with those pumps, which I love but not with this outfit, that is just emphasized.

This outfit should have had plain black pumps -maybe with some metalic accent – with the skinnies another 1-2 inches shorter or longer or at the current length some sort of higher ankle bootie/heel which would have broken the amount of ankle/leg skin shown to make it a bit more now and aggressive.

Either way, the jacket is to die for, she picked the right hairstyle and love the subtle earrings.

  • Glam Dixie

I think the skinny pants would have been fine if they went all the way down, as in just at her ankles. Love that jacket.

  • Oh come on – that jacket is straight out of the Together catalogue.

  • Trickytrisha

She looks like she’s an 18 year old wearing her 12 year old sister’s outfit. Pants and sleeves too short, as everyone has noted.

  • MilaXX

I don’t like how she styled this at all. The skinny pant, the broach that fights the lace cut outs & the shoes all fight what could have been a really great look.

  • Yeah, she looks fabulous until you get to her ankles.

  • flamingoNW

The only problem I have with it is the pin on the lapel. Distracting.

  • Danielle

    THAT BROOCH, ugh!

  • Linda LaPaz

Spot on. Looks much better with the straight leg, slightly flared pant.

  • Tatiana Luján

I love the pants and the shoes. I hate the lace inserts of the jacket.

  • DuBey2

And the Barbie Doll hands don’t help, either.

  • filmcricket

If the pants were just a skosh longer I’d be okay with her forgoing the flared 70s-style ones. Agreed on the shoes, though.

  • Jacquelyn

Great jacket but the pants need to be longer, along with the not-straight-leg thing.

  • Anathema_Device

I do prefer the pants shown in lookbook shot, but I still love this look on her. The twee bows on the shoes aren’t great, but they don’t wreck it for me.

  • conniemd

Model looks way better. Nicole, your age shows in your feet veins. Honestly, the longer flared pant would have better suited a woman of your age.

  • Totally agree about the pant leg width and think the scarf would have helped defrump the look, as well.

  • Terri Terri

I think it’s a beautiful look on her.

  • Lilak

The whole suit looks just the teeny-tiniest bit too small …. Fine for standing still, having been wheeled in on a slantboard, but uncomfortable for movement of any kind.

And yeah, I’d change the pants style — and probably the shoes.

And yet … somehow … she looks pretty great. What peculiar alchemy is this?

  • Alice

I agree completely. You totally nailed it.

  • Meredith_P

I’m more interested in her costar, Mr. Firth. 🙂

  • E. D.

It’s the pants. Just a few more inches!

  • ballerinawithagun

The lace applique on the original jacket extends into the lace applique on the pant making it very edgy and just a little naughty, and the slight flare is fabulous. Just the jacket and it becomes matronly.

  • I like the pants, but I think the shoes and lip color are too extreme — yet her hair color isn’t quite bringing it for me.

  • CatherineRhodes

Yup, style is a capricious bitch. The styling on the model is perfect — long, flared pants with the scarf.

  • quiltrx

I’m so proud of myself for figuring out where this was going…yes, the pants are taking this to a ‘saleslady in a high-end mall store’ place.

  • cocohall

My first thought was Elaine Stritch should be alerted to a wardrobe theft. I wish the lace panels were just on the bodice of the jacket. The detail on the sleeves makes it all too busy.

  • neeBarbero

Admittedly, I believe if my pants aren’t thisclose to the ground they are too short, but those pants look too short! Too long for cropped, too short for normal?

  • Bridget Smith

Heh. So, you mean the working-girl version of this that I’ve been wearing probably doesn’t work as well as I thought? It’s fundamentally the same outfit on the same body type, though I usually wear the jacket open with a bright t-shirt underneath. And the pants are an inch longer. But still.

I will probably continue to wear it anyway. 🙂

  • wontons

She looks great–so fit. But yeah, pants length/narrowness plus shoes with bows plus hairstyle equals waaayy too matronly for her.

  • WittyCism

RC skinny pant usually means hint of rock and roll. But gave off a hint of desperation instead. Hence the aging factor.

  • Lucas

I disagree about the pants, I really like them! But the shoes, yes…. those shoes 🙁 It isn’t just the bow, it’s the color too. Otherwise I think she looks fierce, from head to ankle.

  • Erica_Vuitton

For me, it’s the brooch and hair that throw off the look. Hair should’ve been down and fluffy and the brooch should’ve been nixed as there is already enough detail on the jacket.

  • MoHub

I’m probably alone in this, but I think this called for a ballet flat—in a solid bright color—rather than the pumps. I could live with the pants if they were 1 inch longer.

  • Jaeda Laurez

She needs the hair she had in the Jimmy Choo ads, a good statement ring, maybe in a nice red, and those stilettos from the last pic in the Jimmy Choo post. These shoes, although nice for something else, are entirely too…respectable. She needs those spike stilettos.

  • imakeart

The lace on her right arm has a tear in it.

  • aahlife

The original longer jacket with the lace inset on the sides and orginal long paired pants and the scarf would have looked great on her, she is tall and has the perfect body to carry the extra fabric and lines.

  • MoreShoes

That’s funny. I was looking at Nicole and thought, something is bothering me. Then I saw the photo of the model and the outfit looked perfect. Yep, the skinny pants was wrong choice.

  • It’s the length of the pants. If they’d been skinny all the way down the ankle it would have worked.

  • Ten Ten

I actually think her hair is a bigger distraction than the pants. 🙁

    • CNM

My thoughts exactly. Her hair looks very fried.

  • Kimberly Wilcox

The shoes were definitely my biggest issue. Though I see the issue with the pants – the overall look does look a little mature on her.

  • bellafigura1

It’s hard to believe I’m saying this about Nicole Kidman, but that outfit is too small.

  • She should wear black more often, it looks great on her. I have to disagree about the pants. They’re fine. The shoes are what’s ruining the look. At least to my eye.

  • irielle

Have you seen the trailer for this movie? She has dark hair in the film, and I was struck by how much she reminded me of Elizabeth McGovern (a la Lady Grantham.)

  • kathrineb

I don’t think the lace is helping it look fresh or young either.
