Natalie Portman in Christian Dior Couture at the New York City Ballet 2013 Fall Gala

Posted on September 20, 2013

This is the very definition of a “I”m happy to be here, at arm’s length” dress.

Natalie Portman attends the New York City Ballet 2013 Fall Gala in Christian Dior couture.

Christian Dior Couture Fall 2013 Collection

There will be no hugging of Miss Portman tonight.

It does kind of look like it’s made out of LEGOs, but that’s really not such a bad thing, is it? We think she looks pretty damn gorgeous here.

      I love it. Absolutely.

      • alyce1213

You Better Get Someone! The avatar is a hoot, did you find out how to make a ringtone?

        • Fanny_Trollope

          “The Mask” by The Fugees.

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle YBGS archer

No. I think I would have to find the episode, isolate the piece and create one. Way more effort than I am willing to make for a joke, no one outside of my fellow BKs, would get. I’ll settle for the visual joke instead.

      • marlie

        Your avatar is KILLING me.

      • Shawn EH

Agreed. It’s bizarre, but somehow chic and perfect for her!

    • MilaXX

      Pretty

      • mjude

        agree!

    • Domo_Konnichiwa

Celine Dion in a strapless bathrobe.

    • webslice33

that face! one of the most gorgeous faces ever..

      • Clueless_Jock

        She’s never been more beautiful.

        • PeaceBang

Except I think she went out and bought Marlo Thomas’ eyes.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Her head is perfect – almost any dress would have worked with that. The dress is ok… not great.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips

I don’t think the little points are actually stiff, or she wouldn’t be able to put her arm down.

      • Fanny_Trollope

My arms hurt just looking a that.

    • Alyssa Caruso Ivins

      susan lucci, anyone?

      • Julie Parr

        I was thinking Jane Seymour.

      • mshesterp

I first thought Giada de Laurentis. :-

        • demidaemon

They do resemble each other, don’t they?

    • j_am

      Love it.

    • RussellH88

I bet she was the prettiest urchin at the dance.

    • teensmom99

I do love it but even with a change, I’m seeing all of this year’s Dior’s as something a 1950s Barbie could have worn.

    • bellafigura1

I love it too, it’s striking and unusual. She looks comfortable and glamorous, not easy.

    • uprightcitizen

Do you massage your butt and legs every time you sit down in that?

      • 3boysful

I’m always the practical one–how DOES one sit in that? Even if they bend, are they then forever mashed down?

    • HobbitGirl

I was thinking her dress looked like it was covered in nipples. Still, the colors look good on her.

    • Diego!

I love it, LEGO Dress or not, she looks fantastic!

    • Ms Pamela Espinoza D

      She’s just so beautiful

    • Kerri

Does anyone else remember those “magic” shirts from the 90s that started off the size of your palm, but then stretched to fit your whole torso? For some reason, this dress is totally reminding me of those. I mean, it’s a very pretty dress and the colors look great on her, but the texture is provoking some unfortunate fashion memories.

      • snarkykitten

that’s exactly what that dress made me think of. my local walgreens is still trying to make it happen.

That or those jelly spike bracelets that were a thing for the raver goth kids in my HS

      • mlurve

YES! If those shirts had not existed I think I would’ve really loved this dress. But those shirts did exist so…

      • Kate

All she needs is one of those neck tattoo chokers to go with it.

      • fursa_saida

Oh, GOD, I had so successfully forgotten about those.

    • MmmmmmmmK

I don’t care for the yellow band. Almost any other color would have been better, like a sea green or a periwinkle, but that’s a design complaint. It’s otherwise gorgeous and so is Natalie.

    • flamingoNW

      Wow, love it

    • lobsterlen

Interesting. I wonder how the fabric was created. The fabric slightly reminds me bandhani fabric from India

    • snarkykitten

      Her hair looks terrible though.

    • NoveltyRocker

Really simple and cool, with an interesting, unusual texture. I love the watch accessorizing and she just looks effortless and beautiful.

      • fursa_saida

I completely agree. I think without the texture we’d all be complaining about how this was boring. I can’t remember her generally going for things that are offbeat, so I feel like this is a good one for her–simple and clean, which she seems to like (the horror of her Oscars dress aside), but with just enough interest.

        • NoveltyRocker

I’ve seen a lot of premiere looks that seemed to have just a little something offbeat to them. And then there’s her shaved head period that added an offbeat note to just about everything. I think it’s something that is a part of her natural style but she’s just never really loud about it. The texture and color combo here does get it out of the “too safe and boring” zone she can veer into.

    • Monday1900

The makeup is absolutely stunning but the dress…it’s not a success when I can’t figure out if it was crocheted or molded out of plastic. The colors of the dress are nice though.

    • Amy Rouleau Munson

reminds me of minky dimple baby blanket fabric.

      • Dorothy & Michael n/a

‘s exactly what I thought. I made my daughter a bathrobe out of that fabric, mint green!

    • LadyCelia

It looks like it’s made out of the squishy roll-up-in-a-ball, buy-em-at-CVS t-shirt materials.

      • tereliz

LOL, that’s what I said too.

    • Amanda Welliver

I think she looks lovely but the yellow pulls my eye straight away from her face to her waist. A different contrasting color would flatter her more.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Those little nubby things pick up highlights and cast shadows that give the solid colors life. I love it and hope they are soft and not pokey. She’s giving good face and hair too.

      • alyce1213

I bet they’re soft and I bet they feel fabulous to the touch. That fabric is giving ME life.

        • fursa_saida

I REALLY WANT TO TOUCH IT. Not while she’s wearing it, though. That would be weird.

    • Lesley

love this, it’s feminine and edgy and that face of hers, pure perfection!

    • traced89

I find the dress a little goofy, but it says a lot that it took me awhile to notice because she’s just looking so beautiful. She actually manages to pull this off.

    • knockknockknockpenny

Looks just as good on her as the model, and she’s a wee 5’3″! Best I’ve seen her look in ages. Werq, girl!

    • SugarSnap108

I wonder if the dress’s quills extend when she’s threatened. I do think she looks pretty great, though.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She looks amazing, and she actually looks like she really doesn’t mind being there, unlike every other red carpet she has ever attended.

    • Jacquelyn

      She’s covered in spikes!!!!!
The dress is slightly odd but man does she look good.

    • Glam Dixie

She looks like the cake at the end of my daughters cake decorating class.

    • tonibaloney

I must touch this dress. Love the colors on her and it’s nice to see her so smile-y!

    • http://www.twitter.com/anneofnogables AnneNotHathaway

She’s stunning, but that dress needs to go. It looks like something you’d step on when you get out of the shower.

    • GillianHolroyd

Dynamite look. Glad she wore her hair down.

    • vitaminC

Love this! Does anybody else see young Catherine Deneuve here?

    • boweryboy

I want to touch the dress.

    • Diana Giese

LOVE this. She looks amazing. However what is up with the watch? It’s hideous and does NOT go.

      • Qitkat

She does love that watch. Maybe it’s a baby monitor?

    • Miss WKS

Is it me or does Miss Thing look very ‘refreshed”?

      • imspinningaround

Totally agree. Glad I’m not the only one.

    • MichelleRafter

Love it. But honestly, if you don’t look at the fabric too closely, it looks like those crinkle tops you used to be able to buy for $15.99 at Rite-Aid.

      • Donna Tabor

And if it’s made of that stuff, it must be incredibly forgiving. Just the right dress to wear on one of “those” days.

    • smayer

Looks like a fancy minky blanket!

    • Claudia

Really gorgeous. Can they make a dress out of lego? That would be pretty cool. We’ll put it on Cate and she’ll give it gravitas.

    • marlie

I love this – she looks fabulous. Everything (except the watch) is perfect.

    • Monabel

Reminds me of the Japanese technique for doing tie dyeing, shibori. It leaves little points like that.

    • Jessica Freeman

I really liked it until I scrolled down and saw it was floor length. It would have been better at knee length. It is gorgeous.

    • estella_nyc

Something about the first picture reminds me of Susan Lucci.

    • tereliz

Can you shove it into a bag and go?

    • formerlyAnon

I may be conflating her beauty, here, with my opinion on the dress, but this is a win.

    • Kate4queen

I love it. I had a Issey Miyake cardigan which had the same fabric effect in black.

    • AshBookworm

Hey TLO, speaking of ballet, do u guys know who Roberto Bolle is and can I request at least one picture of him every week? Cheers.

    • Blair Sylvester

I think it would be more figure flattering if the skirt was not textured (it adds a bit of bulk) but i love the bodice/sash part

    • BrooklynBomber

      Cool dress.

    • filmcricket

She looks amazing. She looks so much older, too. I don’t mean that in a bad way, just… even when she was heavily pregnant, she still looked about 16. Now she looks like a grown woman. It suits her.

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle YBGS archer

I agree. She’s finally looking womanly. People have been saying “refreshed” but I don’t think it’s that.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Epic fashion bitch, and I mean that in the best possible way. SNAPS.

    • RoseJB

It looks like that weird, stretchy fabric you see a lot at flea markets.

      • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I think that’s what it is. “Popcorn ruching”

    • kirkyo

Remember this one at the end of the year.

    • Janet B

      Love.

    • Vainte

She’s channeling Morticia Adams with a pop of color.

    • crash1212

Stunning. Head to toe. Nicely done Ms. Portman.

    • Denise Plank

      Blow fish!

    • sweetlilvoice

Is the texture soft, do you think? Or spikey? If spikey, did she have red bumps on her arms after the evening was over? Like when you have a rash from sequins?

    • KingCrazy

      LOVE.

    • Adrianna Grężak

I can only imagine how red her arms were at the end of the night…

      • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

It’s a type of ruching. It doesn’t hurt. Remember the Michael Jackson/Janet Jackson Scream music vid and the tops they wore? Same material, I think.

    • Sara Brams-Miller

that’s a pretty amazing feat of a dress. She looks fantastic in it.

    • kimmeister

I’ll bet that dress would be an awesome back scratcher.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Great dress. She looks fantastic and like the grown-up, married, mother that she is. Not like a gal in costume, which, let’s be frank, she was starting to look like a few years ago.

    • Tafadhali

I like this, but I’m not sure I like the black with the brighter colors? I might have preferred a dark grey or something.

    • guest2visits

Beautiful, Natalie’s looking amazing. Love the texture.

    • Tapetum

She looks lovely. And very sharp.

    • Tom Markiewicz

But how do you sit DOWN in that thing?? Wouldn’t your ass feel like it’s getting skewered??

      • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I think it’s popcorn ruching. Google popcorn shirts.

        • demidaemon

I would assume, anyways, that it is heavily lined for comfort and ease of getting in and out.

    • Trickytrisha

Love it all, except for the yellow part. Don’t like the yellow part. Nope.

    • Contralto

      She is absurdly lovely.

    • Miranda

I love her no matter what she wears…even if the dress can be a weapon.

    • kikisayshi

I know it’s Dior and all, and she looks fabulous, but don’t you think it would be boring to wear the same designer ALL the time?

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Oh man popcorn fabric is coming back? Man, remember all those baby-doll sized tops that magically stretched and you thought you looked like a Spice Girl or a member of TLC but you just looked really spiky and formless?
Uhh maybe that’s just me. And I swear I thought it was called popcorn fabric but now I can’t find anything on google about it so I am probably wrong.
So yeah, it’s not spiky, it’s just a weird form of ruching, unless I’m mistaken.

      • guest2visits

Google popcorn tube tops. Lots of pics. That’s what that material was always used for when I was young.

        • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Tube tops… noooo. I had a red/black shell that made me look like I was covered in extremely hostile ladybugs. I thought I was so fly.

          • guest2visits

Texture is back! I think that shell would probably be very in now. Tube-tops….not so much!

            • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Aw man, you’re kind of making me miss it. But that material was never very flattering – it looks good on Natalie here because she’s like an inch wide, but I definitely remember it making me basically look like a brick because it would stretch out over the boobs but stay ruched on my waist, essentially obliterating shape.

            • guest2visits

HA – next time remember to put DIOR on your shopping list! I’m sure that’s the trick.

        • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

OOH and see also the Michael/Janet Jackson Scream music video.

          • guest2visits

Oh yeah – so right. That’s a great video for visual effects – I remember it.

      • J. Preposterice

The Walgreens near me still sells those things. They have an AS SEEN ON TV!! sticker on the tag.

    • quiltrx

      Wow, she looks fabulous!
And if the dress is as Koosh-ball-ish as it looks, the paps would have a field day watching alternate-universe-famous-me play with my dress. :)

    • SorayaS

I can’t stand her and I think the dress is hideous but she does look gorgeous.

    • Aziza

The dress looks like it was inspired by superheroine costume (and then rendered in fabric inspired by ostrich). Awesome! Does Aquagirl Tula have a brainy, Oscar-winning superfriend?

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

      What a great choice! Perfect.

I barely recognize her. She’s too young to do anything to her face. What is different?

      • Lilak

Motherhood (you know how it changes one’s face slightly) and lighter hair color? with a hefty dollop of eye makeup?
        (That’s all I got.)

      • Datura

Her eyebrows are rounder than usual, and that’s softened her features a bit. I feel like a weirdo for noticing, but I’d previously admired her somewhat masculine, straight brows.

        • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

You may be onto something. She’s wearing an awful lot of eye makeup which could be part of it. Many women’s faces slim down at around age 30. Maybe that’s part of it. I might have the years wrong, but if you look at the cast of Friends, for instance, the faces of Rachel and Monica (especially) became thinner with iess emphasis on their jawlines. I wouldn’t have recognized Natalie in these photos without captions. The uniqueness of her face has disappeared.

    • MoHub

      Hedgehog dress.

    • ShaoLinKitten

I have always found her dreamy. These photos are no exception.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Pretty hair and makeup, but the dress looks cheap. Who thought those colors would work?

    • demidaemon

I like the dress but hate the shoes. They just don’t seem to go here and feel underwhelming.

    • Tatiana Luján

      WERQ

    • rage_on_the_page

I think it looks like she’s piped all over with frosting! Very cool dress.

    • Anna

Even if she had – for some bizarre reason I will never understand – to wear a watch, this is the watch that she thought it would look great with a gown?

    • Kent Roby

This dress is fun, and it is PERFECT to wrap fine china in for a big move.

    • Lizzy

I really really want to touch it.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

      She’s turning into Susan Lucci.

    • kathrineb

I love the colours but it kind of looks like she is covered in nipples.
