Naeem Khan Spring 2014 Collection

Posted on September 12, 2013

General explorations of Latin culture (or specific explorations of Latin cultures) were to be found on the runway this season because it’s apparently time for it to hit the zeitgeist again. Since it’s a well from which the fashion world has drawn inspiration many times before, it’s hard to do something worthwhile, especially in an age in which we’re so attuned to the problematic parts of cultural appropriation. But Naeem Khan, with a show entitled “Madrid to Buenos Aires,” blew past any of those questions and gave us something beautiful, respectful, full of exploration and interpretation and without a cliche in the lot. Drawing inspiration from elements like the Spanish Rose, the Mantilla, and Mexican ceramics, and peppered throughout with gorgeous embroidery and beading, it’s all luxe, pretty and wearable at the same time.

And we’re not big on wedding gowns, but that one was a stunner in person.

Quite beautiful. I’m a bit over the sheer, since we got bombarded with it so much last year. At least this is tastefully done.

    • teensmom99

You hit the nail on the head–but after feeling like I never wanted to see illusion netting again, Khan has breathed life into it.

  • Wow. This is a lovely collection. I would love to know who is doing his embellishment work. Whoever is executing it is doing so masterfully.

    • Nicholas Paganelli

I heard him give a talk recently. He gets all of it done in India from small family run shops. Apparently a lot of the luxury fashion world gets embroidery in India.

  • Laura Renee

WOW, these are effing gorgeous. The rose ones at the start took my breath away.

  • Diego!

I didn’t know my city and where I live has been re-baptized as “Beuenos Aires” instead of Buenos Aires LOL xD Anyway, stunning dresses! This is a breathtaking collection! I love it 🙂

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Gorgeous!! We’ll see too much of the red lace and not nearly enough, if any, of the pottery prints, I’m afraid.

  • One of the most beautiful collections EVER! Hopefully, someday I’ll be able to see the back of the wedding dress.

  • Lilithcat

One of each please! (Oh, and a groom to go with the wedding gown.)

    • Levedi

Right? For that dress I might actually buy the dress first and go husband hunting just so I could wear it. 😉

  • Julie Chase

Jesus. These are too damned pretty, MY EYES.

  • Sobaika

    Impeccably done.

  • Latin Buddy

While I love this…picking Buenos Aires as the Latin inspiration is still heavily European influence (give the country’s history).

  • kayleymaybe

This may be my favorite one yet this season.

  • sagecreek

Gorgeous! Plus, bonus points for nary a fugly shoe in the bunch.

  • Jaeda Laurez

This is gorgeous. The embroidery had to be stunning in person if these pictures are any indication. I adore the bold, striped, graphic fabrics, like…it’s just the right amount of sparkle and shine without ever feeling overworked. A nicely-edited collection, as well.

  • Mrs. Julien

[recovering from swoon] He is hands down my favourite designer. The clothes are sophisticated, beautiful and chic without looking overwrought. Comfortable elegance.

  • LaSylphide

Truly beautiful (love the Frida Kahlo braids).

  • ToothCake

LOVE that the wedding gown has sleeves 🙂

    • Mrs. Julien

The Duchess of Cambridge has her uses.

  • MoHub

    Beautiful. Inspiration vs. copycatting.

  • Irina Ryabchuk

This should be the costume design on next season Game of Thrones.

  • Jacquelyn

Lots of gorgeous things. Really adore those first few red and white looks.

  • Imasewsure

Wow I love everything here. And none of it suits my life, gawdamnit… sucks

    • Sarah

Me either. But, if I was in the alternate universe where I started wearing heels when I was 8, never gained an extra ounce of body fat, excelled in school and met a handsome heir to something or other, and spent all my time going to the opera and swanning around Mediterranean islands, I’d totally wear this stuff.

      • Imasewsure

And I would be the gorgeous and wise neurosurgeon/bikini model on the yacht to your left… next life for sure!!

  • nyazgirl

Oh, LAWD’a’mighty! I have the vapahs! So. much. gorgeousness.

  • Tatiana Luján

Gorgeous. I wish all the sheer skirts were lined.

  • Deac82

My best friend really wants a Naeem Khan dress for her wedding rehearsal dinner next May. Just so happens the theme of the dinner is Latin and includes a mariachi band. Now the difficulty will be in selecting which one she will wear! I can’t wait until that shopping trip!!!

  • LesYeuxHiboux

There are some truly exquisite pieces here.

  • MilaXX

Gorgeous! I’m not typically one for big wedding gowns, but I think the fact that this one is not yet another strapless ball gown really wins me over.

  • neonseattle

gorgeous details. i can’t even pick a favorite dress.

  • majorbedhead

I can’t believe I’m going to type this, but I really love the caftan dresses. I’m kind of sick of the red lace over sheer thing, but this is better than most I’ve seen. Quite beautiful stuff.

    • marlie

The caftans were a couple of my favorites. Color me shocked!

  • Chaiaiai

    God, I need a cigarette.

  • msdamselfly

  • decormaven

I think this is my favorite from the week. Would love to see close up- the fabrics are exquisite.

  • mommyca

I’m intrigued to know which ones he considers “Buenos Aires”; I guess the black ones? Beautiful dresses though.

  • jmorino08

This is gorgeous!! Love everything about it!

  • Kent Roby

Ooooo, I like this woman! I must stock up on Veuve and Beluga and invite her over with a few other chic friends! Gorgeous.

    • marlie

FYI, Naeem Khan is a guy. 😉

      • Kent Roby

I’m referring to the woman he designs for! 🙂

        • marlie

OH. Heh… it’s been a long day. Can I come? Veuve and Beluga would hit the spot right about now.

          • Kent Roby

Sure, just throw on your favorite Naeem Kahn and come on over!

  • kcmari

OMG! He has become one of my favorite designers!

  • EEKstl

Absolutely stunning. I want everything, something I can rarely say about collections. The fact that I would only have occasions to wear perhaps 1% of this collection is completely besides the point. I want everything.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

This is one of those things where I’m gonna say, I wish I had been there.

  • kimmeister

The ones inspired by Mexican ceramics, while beautiful, don’t seem like they belong with the rest of the collection. This might be the first time I’ve seen pants designed by him.

  • Love the short sleeves on the wedding dress.

  • MGMcD

Black and white plunging v-neck gown, come to mama. I will take such good care of you.

  • Gerry Coleman

Am I the only one seeing unfortunate vag embellishment? After the first few, I couldn’t stop seeing it. There was one that seemed to have an actual arrow pointing at her crotch. This prevented me from appreciating many of the looks.

  • jen

    Holy shit. That was amazing!

  • Lilyana_F

Truly beautiful! And on a side note, I usually scroll down and zoom in straight on the clothes, but that one model’s face – fourth photo from the bottom up is giving me LIFE. *snaps!*

  • mmebam

    I’m in love!

  • Michelle Wilson

It had me with the first little peasant dress and my love only continued to grow from there. Not sure I like it as much as the Herrera collection but it’s damn close.

  • rage_on_the_page

Anyone else think this feels very Dolce & Gabbana?

  • smayer

I kinda want to wear caftans now–words I never thought I’d utter.

  • Christy Bishop Cricow

    How beautiful.

  • crash1212

Beautiful collection. I want it all…once the truck with all the money makes its delivery. Love the Frida Kahlo hair.

  • marlie

A breathtakingly beautiful collection. The cultural references are subtle, yet respectful, as TLo said. It’s all very luxe and detailed and interesting. Not a single bad piece in the collection.

  • Celeste

    Wow!! Gorgeous!!

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

This a truly beautiful collection, especially the red and white roses!

  • Nancer

Pardon me, all, while I rant. What is it with sheer see-through tops this year? Since when did nipples-on-display become the norm? I just don’t get it. You know this is only wearable at fashion week, right? Certainly not in the real world in most public venues. So you know that to really wear these, they will have to be lined. Why not just line the darn things for the show? If the fabrics won’t look as nice with the lining, then maybe you’ve picked the wrong fabrics, hmmm? Come on, people, this is ridiculous.

I loved this collection, it’s just that the whole visible nipple movement is really unnecessary. Not cool.

  • MaggieMae

    YAY! Love it.

  • Kate4queen

I really like it apart from all the completely sheer dresses, I just don’t need to see all that thank you! 🙂

  • Lilak

    (can’t write . . . I’m wafting about in a dream!)

  • Linda LaPaz

    Perfect. Everything about it.

  • Florence Whytingale

Did squee. This is the wardrobe of my dreams. I’m off to buy lotto and lose 20 pounds.

  • Toby Wollin

Well, Frieda Kahlo IS having a ‘moment’ this year (and in case we missed the reference, all that’s missing are some roses in the models’ hair), but all of this is gorgeous and actually, IMHO, wearable for a lot of different ages and body types.

  • formerlyAnon

Beautiful collection, though I may appreciate individual pieces better if not presented in the context of the collection. I appreciate what looks to be beautiful work without really loving most of this. The perfect example is #5, the long red floral lace? applique? on sheer over nude/blush. It’s the loveliest red floral sheer overlay dress I’ve seen, but that doesn’t sell me on the look.

  • tereliz

The white and red caftan? WANT SO HARD! And that wedding dress is just sublime. Love the sleeves and the lace panel on the skirt.

  • frannyprof

Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. He is one of my favorite designers.

  • Trickytrisha

So much luscious. It’s the visual equivalent of listening to Granados or Rodrigo. The Kahlo braid is a bit obvious though.

  • save_the_hobbit

    So, so, so much yes.

  • elzatelzabelz

Gorgeous. Those are bee-you-tee-ful LadyPants. Please some starlet, wear those on the red carpet.

  • fursa_saida

Those square chest pieces on the halters and the bolero-inspired looks are BREATHTAKING. That red jumpsuit is making me cringe, though.

  • Esz

LOVE. Fourth image down I pinched and put on my FB (with links!) since it’s such a classic 40’s look.

  • quiltrx

Sigh…LOVELY. I knew I could count on Naeem Khan to bring the pretty!

  • Jacob Bowen

1st Rose with sheer dress=breathtaking. And I would melt to see that completely sheer/white dress with the very intricate detail in person. The only print I’m not crazy about is the sheer print that looks like it has tons of nipples on it…

  • guest2visits

Beautiful. Loving the gold ankle-strap shoes too.

  • Levedi

I want everything from the first half of the collection. And the wedding dress! Oh please, oh please, oh please.

  • Claudia

  • Poeta Paz

This collection was made for me! Thanks Naeem, I will pick them up soon, ha!

  • rebeemoon

Works of art. I covet the black and roses combos.

  • oohsparkley!

Yes, yes, yes to all of it. Gorgeousness.

  • Sunraya

Beautiful! I adore the very bright dress and can see Shelly O in a lot of these!

  • BrooklynBomber

Oh, my God, I’m having palpitations. I want I want I want.

  • Want every single one!

  • Sparkling Farrah

    Gorgeous collection.. Love it!

  • kategs

I wanted so many of these pieces!

  • yethica

I would basically wear every single one of these dresses, given the opportunity.

  • R. L.

I want all the tribal-inspired pieces. Can’t wait to see some of these on celebrity bodies.

  • LocMama

So many gorgeous & luxurious pieces. I’m a little moist for the stripey painted dresses.

  • ankali

This man is flipping brilliant. Were I a ladystar, I would put him on retainer and never let him design for anyone else but me. For then lo, I would be the most exquisitely dressed ladystar, and all would love me AND DESPAIR.

  • Carolina

I can’t remember the name of the black model who has the short styled hair. EVERYTHING looks so much prettier on her!
