General explorations of Latin culture (or specific explorations of Latin cultures) were to be found on the runway this season because it’s apparently time for it to hit the zeitgeist again. Since it’s a well from which the fashion world has drawn inspiration many times before, it’s hard to do something worthwhile, especially in an age in which we’re so attuned to the problematic parts of cultural appropriation. But Naeem Khan, with a show entitled “Madrid to Buenos Aires,” blew past any of those questions and gave us something beautiful, respectful, full of exploration and interpretation and without a cliche in the lot. Drawing inspiration from elements like the Spanish Rose, the Mantilla, and Mexican ceramics, and peppered throughout with gorgeous embroidery and beading, it’s all luxe, pretty and wearable at the same time.
And we’re not big on wedding gowns, but that one was a stunner in person.
