Monique Lhuillier Spring 2014 Collection

Posted on September 08, 2013

It was clear from the first look walking out that elegance was high on the list of priorities for Monique Lhuillier this season. Not that she ever fails at it; elegance has always been part of her stock-in-trade, but this time she really seems to have ramped it up. The pale and creamy sheers giving way to gorgeous pinks and corals, and the crisp modernity throughout give a sense of being ladylike without being boring or old-fashioned.

A lot of these colors are ridiculously beautiful. I’m more or less coveting that deep red dress with the lace and side cutouts. Against the very white backdrop, it’s all very eye popping.

    • decormaven

Yes, the red one is great!

  • Do you think we could eve get Angelina Jolie in any of these? Some of the silhouettes reminded me of her, and it would be so refreshing to see her in something brighter.

    • alyce1213

At gunpoint maybe. I’d love to see her in these, see her come alive in color, but I don’t think so.

    • jojo bunnies

I was actually thinking the same thing. I could see her in the 4th from the bottom one especially.

  • DamH

Love the creamy peach and the sheer pants. The spiderweb dress is quite intriguing.

    • Derek_anny

Silver Spiderweb over White? I want it to be someone’s wedding gown. The white/sheer with maroon and red embroidery 3 looks before for the bridesmaids.

    • I was thinking that the creamy peach dress looks even more attractive because the model has a very pleasant look on her face. The models’ stinky faces really cut into my enjoyment of the clothing.

      • AnneElliot

Some of the models do look a little cranky, especially the blond in the orangey red combo. Maybe she’s angry about the lipstick which does not suit her at all.

  • Daisy Walker

The gowns are so lovely. Sigh.

  • Synnae

Pretty collection. Love the colours and the embroidery.

Most of it is not my personal style (too girlish) but that white-burgundy/brown dress? OMG. Want!

    • DuBey2

That ombre dress must look INCREDIBLE when it moves!

  • ballerinawithagun

Amazing, love the intense color combinations. The tie dye lace over white is brilliant, I’m coveting the skirt. I love the striking simplicity of the fuchsia bustier and the red skirt. Even though the nudes, whites and pale tones don’t appeal to me as much, it was brilliant to intersperse them on the runway for a little eye relief.

  • hughman

Finally loving sheer in a collection. It’s integrated into the design and you’re not reduced to playing another game of “where’s the nipple?”.

    • marlie

It’s not unnecessary sheerness. I love how it’s subtle and tasteful.

      • demidaemon

Yes, I barely noticed it, which is exactly how it should be deployed.

    • Except on that one gown with the lace yoke where I think you can see the nipples.

  • majorbedhead

Wow, a sheer collection that’s gorgeous and tasteful. Who knew it was possible?

I do wish that the model 6th from the bottom didn’t have such a “Who farted?” expression on her face, though.

    • AnneElliot

She’s the same one I commented on, in an earlier dress above. She looks so angry.

  • gorgeous! sheer but still covered up and ladylike!

  • PastryGoddess

    Love love love love love

  • cowper

    I love coral.

  • WittyCism

One showstopper after another. Must’ve been great to see them in action.

  • Glam Dixie

Not really fond of the lace pieces but the rest is really lovely.

  • Latin Buddy

The colors, cuts, frabrics…I’m getting A LOT of 90s vibe.

  • MilaXX

GORGEOUS! Love the deep saturated reds/orange/purples, love the contrast of the crisp whites.
Diana Argon, this is your designer, don’t frump it up!

  • ankali

The white-and-eggplant gown is very beautiful. The rest of the collection really doesn’t do it for me, though; with a few exceptions, I was either bored or put off by the color combinations (and the really bright lace, which I think is just ugly 9 times out of 10).

  • tween00

Some of the lace pieces look dated to me. Some lovely gowns though!

  • quiltrx

LOVE the color palette! And finally–sheer fabrics deployed in a pretty, elegant way. The gowns are all breathtaking.

  • colleenjanel

#11 creates a weird illusion making it look like the top half of her body is completely disconnected from the bottom half.

  • Absolutely in love with the gowns.

    • conniemd

Yes. The other clothing was kinda meh to me, but the gowns were take my breath away, gasp worthy gorgeous. But, isn’t that a trademark of monique lhuillier gowns? Her gowns are made for the awards red carpet

  • E2_Remote

Loving a lot of the clothes, but hating the styling. What’s with the greasy-looking hair on all the models? Such fabulous dresses, paired with makeup and hair styling that makes many of these beautiful girls look like they slept on a park bench last night. What gives?

  • shopgirl716

  • Pennymac

Le’Sigh. This is a breath of fresh air among some disappointing collections!

  • Nexli B

I guess I’m alone in my dislike of this collection. And I hate that I don’t like it, because I love these colors, but the colorless pieces are the only ones that work for me. Most of it (especially all the lace) feels to me like it came out of Fran Drescher’s Nanny wardrobe circa 1994, i.e. what loud and tacky thinks classy looks like.

    • mhleta

My aunt is a classic Hitchcock blonde. Betty Draper but now in her 80s. Back in the day I could have seen her wearing much of this. Not tacky to my eye. You have a frame of reference that’s taking this to a bad place and apparently you’re not the only one because you have 5 likes. Interesting how we can all see things so differently. What has been your favorite this so far this season?

  • Lilyana_F

Damn, some of these looks are truly breathtaking! Well done!

  • alyce1213

I gasped out loud at several of these. I whimpered at the sheer ivory gown with colored flower appliqués.
    The gowns are impossibly beautiful.

    • mhleta

It’s the kind of beauty that almost hurts, isn’t it?

  • Little_Olive

Great colors and pretty collection… it’s just I’m so over lace. And I have to say, some pieces look very 1996ish Isaac Mizrahi (remember that?)

  • Trickytrisha

I’m dying here. These are so incredible. There are so many stand outs it’s hard to choose a favorite. Swoon!

Someone find me a gorgeous male model with a palm fan to cool me off?

  • CKMia

    So much beauty.

  • Kato16

Wow. That print in the last two looks is gorgeous.

  • marlie

I love these colors, and I love the prints. Most of the pieces are really flattering and beautiful, and the separates would be great either together or apart. The gowns are, as usual, gorgeous.

  • Screw the traditional idea of the big white poofy wedding dress. When I am a billionaire and get engaged to some arm candy, I will get a bunch of these dresses, some model walking lessons, and stomp up and down the wedding aisle to a heavy bass beat, changing my dress for each pass. Damn!

    • mhleta

I wholly support you in this endeavor. Please post pictures when it happens. Or invite me.

  • Drop dead gorgeous, I’d take just about anything, and I must INSIST that Halle Berry wear that white/rust one-shouldered gown, 4th from the bottom.

  • Imasewsure

Don’t love a lot of the magenta or bright red for some reason but love a lot of the others here including the florals at the end. Totally see Jolie in a lot of these as mentioned by other BKs. Wouldn’t it be an awesome change to see her in these colors????

  • Miss WKS

SO fucking GORGEOUS! It just kept getting more and more scrumptious….

  • mhleta

Classy, ladylike, scene stealing. You’d have to feel like a card carrying goddess in these pieces.

  • Aurumgirl

I owned dress number 10 when I was 9, and I used to ride my bike all around my neighbourhood in it. I feel like that whole experience would have been improved if my version were also a romper like this one is. I’m a bit put off by all the sheerness and the flat colourlessness of it all (it’s in every collection so far) but the fuchsias and the carmines in this collection sing.

  • Mary_Shelley

The models look great, until you notice that they look like starvation victims.

  • Anplica Fiore

Just how fast were the models all walking to create that kind of personal wind? Lovely dresses!

    • mhleta

It’s what we all need with us at all times: Theme music and personal wind.

    • demidaemon

That’s how you know a model when you see them. She always has a personal wind at her beck and call, no matter how fast she moves.

  • jmorino08

This is stunning! Love the colors! But those first two kind of look like they got washed with a red t-shirt.

  • AnneElliot

Beautiful and classy — I love the ecru dress with the metallic overlay, about 7 from the bottom. Gorgeous dresses!

  • kimmeister

My, that is a boatload of lace. The print in the penultimate look is really jarring – it’s like your eye doesn’t know where to look.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Paging Emma Watson, Kiera Knightley, Cate Blanchett, and…Kristen Stewart. Yeah, I said it. It’s not my style but it’s going to look lovely on the red carpets and interview armchairs of the world.

  • calimon

Oh, the Pretty, it almost hurts!
