Mindy Kaling in Edition by Georges Chakra at the 2013 Emmy Awards

Posted on September 23, 2013

This is like the Magic Eye of dresses. If you stare at it long enough, it turns into a completely different dress.

Mindy Kaling attends the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California in an Edition by Georges Chakra plum gown paired with a Jerome C. Rousseau clutch.

It took us a good while to realize that the wonky bust is supposed to look like a large chain necklace. For the longest time, we were completely focused on the patch of fabric above that detail. It looked like some sort of yoke to us. If you took away that patch and just let the neckline be the top beaded portion of the chain detail, we think this dress would go from awkward to pretty damn chic instantly. Unfortunately, it’s stuck on awkward for the moment. We love the color and the shape of it for her, as well as the little sleeves. Not loving the hair and makeup, though.

love the color! that neckline really bugs me tho…would’ve been so much better without the fabric above the jeweled cutouts. And, yes…hair and makeup are not flattering.

I don’t think I could handle wearing a dress with a built-in jolly rancher necklace. I’d spend the entire night trying to eat it. The hair/makeup doesn’t bother me, but her hair is so beautiful it really deserves better styling.

Her hair makes it look like she’s got an oval head — oval laying on its side, not up and down. To me, her head looks way wider than it is tall.

The little bib-lette makes me wonder if it’s for support–if the weight of the embellishments would make it slide off the shoulders otherwise. Without seeing the back, I’m thinking if the support was needed that would be the better place to put it.

I find this to be a little matronly. I think it may be the sleeves and the way it’s very covered to the neck (hence that weird extra fabric strip). I agree lose that frabric strip and it would improve things immensely. The fit is great and the color is beautiful on her though.

Something about this just feels wrong, it’s almost like someone took a ‘business attire’ dress and put a floor length skirt on it. I dunno – maybe I’m crazy.

It is a terrific color. I don’t hate the detail on the top but I don’t love it either…

The fit could be better, but I love this shape and color for her.

no, they are both definitely pears.

I love Mindy, she’s so great. I’m not madly in love with this, like you guys. I think the color is great. The fit is okay, and I’m not really into the top part. And the hair is just not working. She has GREAT hair, you guys. Why does it look so “meh” here???? I’m not fully into this look because I don’t think it suits who she is. I think she has such a fun, sparkly personality I want to see her in things that are more fun and adorable. It makes me want to be famous just so I become BFFs with her and help her pick out her award show gowns!

Have to disagree uncles- I think the dress would look unflattering and 80s tacky with the cutouts as the neckline rather than having the extra fabric cutting a straight line at her collarbone.

Stunning colour and gorgeous hair and makeup.

I have to disagree. I think she looks gorgeous and I love that color for her. Her hair could maybe be a little bit softer and makeup a bit more dramatic but that’s getting nitpicky.

She doesn’t look like she loves this look at all. :-(

Totally says “stopped at Bloomingdale’s sales rack on the way to the Emmys, picked up something that sort of fit and did my hair/makeup in the car.” Love the color, thought!
