Michelle Pfeiffer in Roberto Cavalli at The Family Premiere

Posted on September 11, 2013

Wow. Who knew Michelle had the funk in her?

Michelle Pfeiffer attends the premiere of “The Family” premiere in New York City in a Roberto Cavalli ensemble paired with Rona Pfeiffer jewelry.

Roberto Cavalli Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Meghan Collison

The poor dear never did learn how to pose on the red carpet. Some stars who became stars prior to about 1995 or so sometimes have a tough time with it. It’s kind of endearing. Except in Tom Cruise, but he’s never endearing. People love RDJ’s twitchy red carpet goofballery, but we always found it too precious. Same goes for Johnny Depp and his anime character/gay wind chime affect on the RC. Anyway, despite being generally considered one of the most beautiful women of her generation, she always comes off deeply insecure about how she looks.

And man, she shouldn’t. First, because insecurity is crippling, no matter who you are, and second, because she really is gorgeous. We’re not sure many women of any age could really pull off this look, but she’s doing it, despite the purple velvet and her stiff posing. Go on with your funky rocker self, girl. The only quibble we have is with the pants hem.

After the premiere, later that night, she got onstage with her good buddy Prince and backed him up on “Raspberry Beret” and “I Would Die 4 U.” They’re tight. He borrows her heels all the time.

Gosh, she looks thin (and a little frail) and those shoulder pads seem to emphasize that. She is just too tiny to wear something so overpowering.

    • MoHub

I think the problem with the shoulder pads is that she’s hunching, making them rise in little points. If her shoulders were straight, the shoulder pads would lie more smoothly.

      • decormaven

Precisely the point. It makes for a painful look.

      • nyll18

Also her hair hides the line of the shoulder which I think fools the eyes into looking like she’s hunching up even more. On the runway the model’s hair is pulled back so you can see the intentionally padded shoulder and therefore she doesn’t come off hunchy.

        • ConnieBV

          That’s an excellent point.

    • wonderdivaEtsy

I completely agree about her looking almost frail, and the weird distortion in the first photo made it look like she had a dowager’s hump that had moved to her shoulder. She needed a little pep talk about fierceness before hitting the red carpet.

  • ushoda

    Austin Powers!
What’s the name of the movie? “No member”?

  • Frank_821

Oh I so miss seeing Michelle Pfeffier in film. she was 1 of my fave movie starts back in the late 80s

She is still stunning. too bad she can’t allow herself to enjoy her looks

    • raininmai

She’s was in a recent movie with Chris Pine, “People Like Us.” It wasn’t bad.

    • Danielle

I don’t know why, but every time Dark Shadows comes on, I have to sit down and watch it. She’s great in it.

      • demidaemon

I don’t think she ever gives a bad performance. Oftentimes, like in Dark Shadows, she makes what is otherwise a not great movie awesome for those moments when she is onscreen.

  • elemspbee

adorbs, but between her teeny self and the pose that looks like she dreads being in public (and she has spoken about this), that fab outfit is swallowing her.

  • i love this on her, with the exception of the ascending shoulder lines, which make her look as though she is hunching over, when she isn’t.

    • Tatiana Luján

I really thought she was hunching over. That’s an unflattering shoulder line!

    • She is hunching, which is exaggerating those shoulder pads.

  • Huh. I don’t know how to feel about this. I love her. We all do. I love purple velvet. We all do. Okay, maybe not all. But this is all a little Prince, Rachel Zoe and Steven Tyler thrown into a blender. I want better things for a woman this stunning.

    • marlie

    • I wish I could like this twice.

    • Danielle

    • mshesterp

Steven Tyler was the first thing out of my mouth. It just doesn’t seem like HER. And she looks so awkward in it. Ship it off to Steven immediately.

    • ballerinawithagun

Exactly, but I love and want it anyway.

  • Karen Belgrad

I wish someone told me about Lenny Kravitz’s rummage sale. I totally would have gone.

  • zenobar

At first sight, I was all “Yikes, box this up and send it over to Steven Tyler,” but when I read that she was onstage with Prince, all was right with the world. But then I thought “y’know, I’m just gonna Google that, because I think that just maybe the Uncles are cracking wise” and I did and there was no indication that MP and Prince collaborated in any way and now I am completely confused and maybe a little hurt.

    • mshesterp

I don’t mean to laugh at your pain, confusion, and hurt–but I totally am. That last line just made me guffaw in my office. Totally with you on the Steven Tyler train.

      • ConnieBV

I felt the same way, zenobar. Maybe they can play at the TLounge this week!

      • zenobar

I like to think of the Steven Tyler Train as something not unlike the Soul Train, only with more scarves.

  • Monday1900

I’m surprised but I love this–I think the fabric is gorgeous. Is something going on with the shoulders or is that just the way she’s holding herself? That’s my only quibble. I also adore that her face doesn’t look like plastic. The trailers for the movie look awful though.

    • demidaemon

I thought the trailers made it look awesome.

  • random_poster

It’s totally unexpected. I don’t think she’s pulling it off, but I can give her kudos for trying.

  • Jaeda Laurez

She could look fabulous if she owned it- she’s posing like she’s afraid somebody’s going to nail her with eggs or something.

  • melanie0866

She is SO beautiful. And very talented. Love her.

    • Clueless_Jock

I’ll never forget her in “Age of Innocence” with Daniel Day Lewis.

    • Same here. She has nothing to prove. She has aged with grace. She’s probably the most beautiful woman in Hollywood, and she has never behaved badly or flaunted anything. She appears to have a quiet confidence. It’s nice to see her out and about.

  • Tanya Wade

I just don’t know….I’d love to see her in short hair again, like she had in Into the Night….It would help to not overpower he bone structure like she’s doing now. And it might make this outfit a little easier to swallow. Or not. Still love her.

    • conniemd

Yeah, first time I saw her was in “Into the Night.” Her hair looked good shorter in “Up Close and Personal” with Robert Redford.

  • Julie

    Jimi, is that you?

  • marlie

I LOVE her. LOVE. Her hair and makeup look fabulous, but I can’t with Prince (and Steven Tyler)’s hand-me-downs. Just NO.

  • ashtangajunkie

Gorgeous. I don’t mind this on her at all, although I think that she should have worn a simple black tank underneath if she didn’t want to button the shirt all the way up like the model is wearing it. Looks too messy unbuttoned, I think.

  • Jessica Freeman

The odd shoulders give her the appearance of hunching over, adding to the insecure effect. I’m not sure it’s her outfit either way.

  • Imasewsure

I love this! You go on with your funky awkward (beautiful) self! All she needs is Lenny Kravitz on her arm to complete this look!

  • I think this is just sad. I thought Michelle had more style, but I think she’s so insecure now that she’s allowed some asshat to tell her what to wear. Thus the hunched shoulders, which just emphasizes those pointy shoulder pads that are so very unfortunate. She looks way too thin and frail, which may or may not be reality. This look just exagerrates everything, and not in a good way.

  • Spicytomato1

At first glance she could almost pass for Debbie Harry. It is a very unexpected look for her, I like it. Although with her gorgeousness she could wear a paper bag and look amazing, I’m sure.

  • Ramon Figueroa

Anyone who can survive “Grease 2” is a heroine in my book. And I never thought someone could beat Julie Newmar, but she is Catwoman forever.

  • lobsterlen

I want to love this but just can’t. Michelle looks so uncomfortable and awkward.

  • GorgeousThings

I’ve wondered if that pants-length issue is an L.A. thing? I have friends in L.A. who wear their pants like that, and I see it on a lot of fashion bloggers from that area. They don’t get much rain out there, and certainly they don’t have to put up with NY slush, so maybe that’s why it’s popular.

  • MilaXX

At first glance she looks great. When you get a close up on the face and you the nerves/insecurity, it feels more like your mom wearing the too mod for her outfit you talked her into. She just doesn’t look comfortable. Shame cause I think she really could rock this look with a bit more confidence.

  • Janet B

Just pretend that you enjoy this RC stuff.

  • Miss WKS

Those shoulder pads could come down a flight or two…..

  • berkeleygirl

I’m wondering if it’s not insecurity, but rather extreme shyness? She’s admitted to it many times in the past. Moreover, she’s reportedly an intensely private person. I’ve never forgotten an interview with Cher, who’d become close friends with Pfeiffer making Witches of Eastwick. To stress how private Pfeiffer was, she said: “If I heard that she had a kid, I wouldn’t be surprised. She’s the most private person I know.”

Also, not only has she not been working much (which is our collective loss), but it’s been quite a few years now since she left Los Angeles. The Pfeiffer-Kelly live in Woodside – a small, very wealthy community tucked away in the hills between San Francisco and Silicon Valley. Fabulous place to live if you want to be left alone – her neighbors include Charles Schwab and Neil Young.

  • Ok, first, thank you for aging and not going crazy plastic surgery face on us. Second, I like this outfit but maybe with skinny black pants, this is too much purple, too much velvet. And the roots anger me, get your hair done or go brown.

    • Maybe just a different shirt? I think a purple patterned shirt is a step too far.

  • BarniClaw

“Insecurity is crippling, no matter who you are.” I think this needs to go next to my mirror. Next to all my mirrors. It’s that awesome. Thanks, guys.

  • fringebenefit

Gee, I think she looks terrific. I like the whole vibe, with the one exception of the freaky shoulder pads.

  • tonibaloney

    Shoulders back, dear!

  • mhleta

She is not pulling off this look. Prince himself couldn’t pull off this look. It looks like it came from a box at a halloween store and is missing the rainbow afro. The shoulder pads make her look like a tense skeleton. She is one of the most beautiful women on the planet, which shows through in spite of the heinous outfit, but only just.

    • Sarah

I beg to differ. Prince can pull off any weird ass suit he likes! He has done it a billion times! I agree about the shoulder pads, though. I just want to tell her to RELAX, but I think that a lot of it is the jacket.

    • formerlyAnon

Unless he’s very recently gained 30 pounds, I feel entirely certain that Prince could pull this off. Entirely certain. At least in my opinion. And I could spend a pleasant 20 minutes just imagining the different high heeled boots he might pair it with.

  • alyce1213

Except for the shoulder pads, which make her look like she’s perpetually shrugging, I love this. She’s having fun and it shows.

    • AzulFashion

Yes. That is my problem, too. It looks like she has her shoulders pulled up, which makes her look very uptight.

  • JaCory Deon

Well good for her for going that 60’s Rocker vibe BUT you need the cajones to pull it off (i.e. an “I Don’t Give A F” attitude) which she lacks. She’s always seemed shy, offscreen, but in that way she’s like a lot of actors (they can be terribly awkward if you take away the character). She’s still a very good looking woman, either way and there’s something charming about one of “The World’s Most Beautiful People” being self conscious about it…shows she’s human.

  • MaggieMae

    I want those pants.

  • E. D.

Is she the new head singer of Aerosmith or what?

  • Nonmercisansfacon

This is Prince’s suit. Or Depp. This doesn’t belong on Michelle!

  • JasmineAM

    LOVE IT.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

She looks like Liberace and Steven Tyler’s lovechild (could have happened).

  • JDreesen

“…insecurity is crippling, no matter who you are…”

thank you for this. i don’t make a habit of trolling the interwebz for inspirational life-quotes or validating affirmations or anything, but this line made me sit up a little straighter at my computer.

  • formerlyAnon

I can’t deny the truth of the comments that say this evokes perhaps more Steven Tyler than it should – but in the end I find I don’t give a damn. THIS is an ensemble that makes it worth whatever effort she puts into being ’70s rock star skinny and lithe at 55.

    • “THIS is an ensemble that makes it worth whatever effort she puts into being ’70s rock star skinny and lithe at 55”

      I heart you.

      • formerlyAnon

Why, thank-you. Our opinions do seem to run along the same lines most of the time.

  • quiltrx

I want a bolt of that fabric! It would probably fall into “too good to use” land, so I’d just unroll it occasionally and wrap myself in it.

  • She looks like she’s in costume for Dark Shadows. It does fit her nicely, but I can’t get beyond purple velvet suit.

  • conniemd

I was so waiting for pictures of Michelle from the premiers of “the family.” She is one of my all time favorite actresses simply because she is so gorgeous to look at. She looks great here. You go gurl.

  • jilly_d

Love her, and love her in this. I do quibble with the hem, and also with the clutch – it looks like an instrument case for a piccolo. But maybe this band director has just spent too much time at work this week.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

She needs to give that outfit back to Steven Tyler. I do NOT like this. At. All.

  • Erica_Vuitton

She looks so uncomfortable and hesitant about her outfit. If you’re going to wear a purple embossed velvet suit with Mugler high shoulders pads timid is not the right attitude to put out.

  • ErmengardeGreen

I love this, and awkward stance aside I think she looks great. It’s weird that at this point I notice more when a 50ish woman hasn’t had a ton of plastic surgery more often than I notice one who has. Not that his is MP’s fault — if anything, it’s the reverse — but it’s funny to see her face and think “hooray normal face.”

  • RussellH88

    Catwoman is serving it.

  • Darva Sutra

She can be my pimp any day, FAB!

  • She is pulling that off in a major way. Fabulous!

  • Laura Renee

Also that eyeliner is not helping her here.

  • Clydette Wantland

‘After the premiere, later that night, she got onstage with her good
buddy Prince and backed him up on “Raspberry Beret” and “I Would Die 4
U.” They’re tight. He borrows her heels all the time.’

Dying laughing! You guys are too funny!! She looks great.

  • Constant Reader

Which Bitter Kitten mentioned those Quiana picture shirts the other day? They’re back!

  • CeeQ

I feel there’s too much velvet here….and coupled with the ridiculous hem on the pants, I’m not loving it.
The top half is great, the pants push it over the edge for me.

  • Suse

So London circa 1965 ~ I love it!

  • kimmeister

I think that might not be her eyeliner.

  • joything

“Who knew Michelle had the funk in her?” Oh, us who saw her in “Into the Night” and “Fabulous Baker Boys” on the big, naughty screen. So glad to see her in an eye-grabbing suit!

  • Trickytrisha

I prefer to thin that Lenny Kravitz wants to know when you snuck into his house and snitched his outfit. Only, he’d have a better bag to accessorize with.

  • bellafigura1

She gets every prop I can muster. A little tense in the shoulders, but I love how she looks.

  • MizShoes

“Except in Tom Cruise, but he’s never endearing. People love RDJ’s twitchy red carpet goofballery, but we always found it too precious. Same goes for Johnny Depp and his anime character/gay wind chime affect on the RC.” made me snort wine out of my nose. Brilliant.

  • Gorgeous is right but if you are wearing that much purple velvet and still look frail isn’t it time for a pizza? I know, I know…she’s always been tiny and she is a runner but still. Maybe if she stood up straight? Aunt Sylvia always said you could fix anything by standing up straight.

  • macwell

    She looks like Stephen Tyler.

    • Essie Atienza

      My exact thoughts.

  • Jacob Bowen

I think I have to ask this question almost every day. Who says velvet is in??? I keep getting bad flashbacks to being 7 in 1998 and running away from my sister at Christmas time because I didn’t want her to touch me with the velvet dress (I HATE the feeling).

  • bertkeeter

Stunning woman! Actually a relief to see someone on RC without that insipid “one hand on hip” pose.

  • Lucas

Wow. God damn, she is beautiful. I will totally see this movie just because she’s in it (and the preview looked kinda fun)

  • jmorino08

I just hope Prince was generous enough to give her the spotlight for a “Cool Rider” redux!

  • oohsparkley!

I love it. The pants should be 1 inch shorter.

  • guest2visits

The shoulders and the hem length – otherwise love it and glad to see her having fun with the whole look.

  • Gatto Nero

I would never have imagined it — but wow. Great color on her, too.
She’s fabulous, red carpet moves or no.
