Michelle Dockery in Vionnet at the Estée Lauder Modern Muse Party

Posted on September 13, 2013

Lady Mary’s really starting to figure things out on the style front, although that doesn’t mean she’s sticking the landing every time.

Michelle Dockery attends the Estée Lauder “Modern Muse” Fragrance Launch Party at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City in a Vionnet taupe silk long-sleeve dress with an asymmetrical skirt from the Pre-Fall 2013 collection paired with a Prada clutch ad Paul Andrew ‘Zenadia’ pumps.

Paul Andrew Fall 2013 ‘Zenadia’ Pump

Let’s keep this simple.

We like:

  • The shape and the colors
  • The sense of drama
  • That it feels very coordinated and put together when some of her past outfits looked random.

We DON’T like:

  • The need for a better bra.
  • The bland, matchy bag
  • The thing hanging off the back of her skirt.

There. That about covers it.

Agreed. I just want to jump into the picture and straighten up blouse.

    • Ronni H.

And chop off that skirt cape.

      • demidaemon

Agreed. That is a new version of the mullet hem, and it needs to be aborted, now.

        • Ronni H.

Edna Mode said it herself; no capes!

  • ccinnc

Is she even WEARING a bra? The way she’s hunching her shoulders, I’m guessing no. Ugh.

    • Sinéad Doyle

I’m wondering if the dress is backless and she decided not to wear a bra. Anyone know?

  • JasmineAM

I think this color is AWFUL for her skin tone. Everything in this picture reads “dead”.

    • Heather

I loathe that color. I don’t think it looks good on ANYONE.

    • disqussant

I don’t know why actresses keep insisting on wearing beige for public appearances. It hardly ever photographs well.

    • momjamin

      Is she wearing zombie hose?

  • AmandaCathleen

I mostly agree, except I wish the blouse was in a different color. Perhaps the blue or darker taupe from the skirt? As is, this washes her out a bit. But still, another step in the right direction on the style front.

    • Rhonda Shore

absolutely, that beige color does not flatter her. THe blue would be divine! She should wear the winter palette, jewel tones and black!!!

      • AmandaCathleen

Absolutely! Jewel tones, maybe a rich charcoal gray. She has gorgeous porcelain skin, which looks sadly pallid in taupe.

        • Rhonda Shore

yes! Dark greys and pewters will work against that alabaster skin! I like her in clean classic looks, i don’t think trendy works for her, she has an expensive face that demands classic lines. I don’t like the asymmetrical bit on this dress, as someone else said, it looks like it got caught in a door.

  • Mmmmmeh? I don’t like the color of the top of the dress for her, and the skirt just looks like it got stuck exiting the ladies’ room.

    • meowing

Sigh: I actually had that happen once. Once is quite enough. I just want to un-hoick both her blouse and that skirt.

      • THE WORST! My messenger bag (which holds all of my crud for the day) eats one side of my skirt/dress while walking to work on the regular. Nothin’ like walking around in the former red-light district of Washington, DC with your hock hanging out.

    • Denise Plank

I had that happen at church. Still makes me cringe.

  • jilly_d

I actually hate this color on her, and the boobs are giving me a sad. Those shoes are almost bitchin’ enough to make up for it, though. WANT.

    • marlie

They’re the best part of the whole outfit.

  • Jessica Freeman

She needed to clean up the outfit, full stop. It just looks sloppy. Shame, so much potential.

  • stellamaris73

This outfit does nothing for her coloring. She needs to stick to high-contrast color schemes.

    • disqussant

This is a good example of why dressing outside your season is a bad idea. Dockery’s obviously a winter and looks best in bolder colors. This outfit is more suitable for someone with softer coloring.

  • Anathema_Device

I don’t mind the back of the skirt so much, but I’m not loving that color top on her. I think it needs to be darker or richer or something…even lighter. The fit on the top is awful.

  • TigerLaverada

I don’t know, this doesn’t work for me. Too bunchy and schlumpy, plus I have a personal loathing for that dulled beige hue of the top — my old bras are exactly that color. Looks like she’s wearing one of them, in fact. She and I both need new ones.

  • schadenfreudelicious

I think we can agree that if the girls are closer to your elbows than armpits better support is required

  • nannypoo

Her awkward posing is part of the boob problem, but really if she can’t find a properly fitting bra there is no hope for the rest of us. I like the outfit, but the color of the top is pretty bad with her coloring.

    • anyalama

The boobs don’t bother me. Thats where most boobs go. It’s the posture that is making my back hurt.

      • nannypoo

I have boobs. I know where they go. Little boobs like hers belong farther from the waist and closer to the shoulders.

  • marlie

Agree with TLo. I wish the hem length was a little bit longer, and then maybe the excess fabric hanging off the back wouldn’t bother me so.

  • rage_on_the_page

    Cool shoes!

  • Kate

The same top but in navy would have been better. It is her color and would have breathed life into this outfit.

  • hughman

I actually thought the band of fabric around her waist was her exposed midriff to which I was “yikes!”.

  • MaggieMae

  • Jacquelyn

Not her finest but compared to what she was doing for so long, it’s a step in the right direction.

Lady Mary, please go forth and buy a bra.

  • Monabel

I, on the other hand, want to give the skirt a tug to straighten it.

  • Akmall Razlan

OMG! look at those bossoms? they looked saggy, you know what i mean right? the its too damn far from the shoulder, the function of the bras is actually to lift up and makes it looks amazing on the body, but! sadly, it did not do any justice and the choice of outfit is totally out! the skirt, kill me! awful!!! ugh!

  • Heather

    I want those shoes!

  • LaSylphide

Unflattering outfit. And here’s another example of somebody who needs to learn how to pose. The hunched over ‘I’m a shy little flower’ pose is OK if you’re dressed for it, but most RC looks are anything but ‘shy’. If you can’t work it, don’t wear it.

  • MilaXX

I don’t mind the skirt, although I agree it would have been better sans tail. I just don’t think that tan color on top works with her coloring.

  • kipper

she looks like a modern southern woman

    • demidaemon

    • kathrineb

  • flamingoNW

Do not like the shape at all. Very messy fit. I like the colors okay. I really don’t like this hairstyle. Kind of dull and not very versatile.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

    Yep, totally agree, Boys!

  • Judy_S

I think she needs to throw back her shoulders and pretend that she’s a beautiful woman everybody is looking at, who is about to do something wonderful. Then she’d be fine.

  • AmeliaEve

Neapolitan ice cream fabric! And a better bra would help, but the top is just too long and narrow for her in all dimensions. See how the sleeves bunch and the shoulders droop? It’s just cut wrong for her all around. Not to mention the blah color.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

It’s kind of dull to me…

  • I see where she’s going with this, but everything’s askew and it’s making me twitch a little.

  • JauntyJohn

    omg, SO close.

  • formerlyAnon

I cannot stand the way the top looks as if it does not fit. Indeed, if after straightening the horizontal creases/pulling once, it returns while she’s walking the red carpet, the top does not fit.

  • JP

“I rolled around in the back of the limo and didn’t take the time to smooth out my clothes.”

  • I think stockings would be nice too. She looks cold.

  • Lenora Dody

You’d think they could have some kind of “dresser” type person at these things that could take a celeb behind the step and repeats and just kind of straighten them out!

  • Are you messing with us, boys? This is awful! The color makes her look ill and brings out every line, freckle, and dark eye-circle. The top doesn’t fit. The skirt looks like it’s been heisted up and tucked into the waistband on the side, but then she’s pooing fabric. Her face is shiny and the makeup isn’t flattering. She’s apparently not wearing a bra, and she needs one. And I know it’s fashionable, but blue fingernails just make me think “cyanosis.” The bag needs an evening gown. She’s hunched over and standing knock-kneed. The shoes are cute. Although they may be WHY she’s standing knock-kneed…

    OUT, Michelle!

  • Adrianna Grężak

I like the idea of the skirt/outfit, but it looks so ill fitting.

  • Lola Channing

I was very disappointed when I realized the gorgeous beige stopped at the waist to reveal the bandana off the May pole.

  • KayEmWhy

What is going on with this bra-less trend? She needs to go to DragU to learn how to stand.

  • neonseattle

the color of that top is making her skin look grey

  • Anne

The Dowager Countess would tell her to stand up straight.

  • crash1212

I think she should avoid that color of beige next to her face at all costs.

  • nicewilliams

    This makes me sad.

  • Dagney

    oh HONEY noooooooooooooooooooooo

  • Dagney

and how frustrating! how cute would she look in a dress made from that skirt fabric, in a kicky little 60’s shape? (referencing a post about her from the other day).

  • Kelly

I dunno, T and Lo. So far, I have not liked a single outfit that Michelle D has worn in the last few weeks. If these get-ups (like that black skirt/navy top ensemble and that school-marmy blue skirt of a couple of days ago) represent her “finding her style,” then I wish she’d look a little further. Here, as in the past, she looks distinctly uncomfortable wearing short skirts — she always hunches over in them, as if she’s trying to find a little more length. The result is that my inner Dowager Countess is snapping, “Mary! Posture!” This particular sad skirt looks like something she accidentally got caught in her knickers while in the loo. That top leeches all the color from her face and looks stretched-out and ill-fitting to boot.

I do like the shoes, though.

  • Stand up straight for god’s sake…just stand up straight.

  • bellafigura1

Hard to believe the top and bottom are attached — that’s a dress? It looks like she put it on in the early morning poor lighting of her NYC apartment and didn’t notice until later in the day that the colors were off, off, off (not that I’ve ever done that a thousand times). Anyhoo, great face.

  • kathrineb

Oh lala miss dockery I like the skirt sans the back. I never realised she had such a fab womanly figure usually she looks more frail.

  • gurl boy

Amazing that “FIT” of a garment does not seem to matter to these “Celebrity” stylist! SHAME!

  • librarygrrl64

I disagree slightly on the color. I think that champagne shade next to her face washes her out.

  • Yikes. It looks like she rolled herself into a sheet because she screwed up the original skirt that went with the top that balanced the thing and pulled all those wrinkles out. OR she looks like a couture piece of Fruit Stripes gum from the 70’s.

  • carolina_dawn

Oh no. The color of the top is horrible for her. It tortures here skin tones. This all wrong.
