Michelle Dockery in Miu Miu at the HBO’s 2013 Emmys After Party

Posted on September 25, 2013

Lady Mary wanted a little sparkle for later that night. We don’t blame her, after having to wear that dreary bedspread of a dress earlier.

“Downton Abbey” star Michelle Dockery attends HBO’s Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Post Award Reception at The Plaza in Los Angeles, California in Miu Miu.

Cute enough. She’s like the English Dianna Agron, though. Way too low-key in her style sometimes. She at least hits the mark more often than Agron does, but sometimes we just want to run up to her, slap on a smokey eye and fuck up her hair a little.

Also: the sleeves are weird. Also-also: This could have gone straight to retro-sexy if she’d worn sheer black hose with it.

I think she’s improved tremendously (read as: gotten a new stylist). That said, man, a smokey eye would have made this amazing.

Also, I really want her earrings.

      • majorbedhead

I really want her alabaster skin.

        • PlethoraofBooks

I have the skin – it’s very painful when it burns. The only reason I have any color on my arms is from a second degree burn I got in high school. And that was wearing sunscreen, reapplied 3 times in 3 hours, but it was the first time we were in the sun and I was in Florida, at the Atlantic Ocean. I bet she could get a spokesperson gig for a sunscreen group easily if she wanted it.

          • Alloy Jane

Her sunscreen is called Cloud Days, lol.

            • conniemd

No kidding. I take after the English half of my heritage and never in my life have I tanned. Either the sun screen totally blocks out everything or I burn and peel. My sister, who takes after the dark French Canadian half can spend hours in the suns and tans beautifully.

            • Violentcello

Oh man, that’s the story of my life, right down to the French Canadian sister. (Except we’re Irish, not English.)

            • melisaurus

You can actually get a sunburn on cloudy day too, especially when you’re this pale. I’m sure her sunscreen is don’t go outside much.

    • Jessica Freeman

She is so striking that she could pull of something of a higher level of fashion, not overly crazy, but definitely more exciting than this.

    • veriance

agree about the sleeves, but she looks great!

    • Jaeda Laurez

The flash is terribly unflattering, but that’s a dope dress. The clutch needed some color punch though.

    • Jackie4g

Yes, where have all the stockings gone, long time passing? (sorry, Kingston Trio) Black hose would have been the right thing to do. They would have continued the line and anyway, she is so fair skinned, it’s sort of Caspar like.
Now, tell me why no one objects to all black accessories this time? I think they look the best, no “pop of color” needed here. I don’t understand when is it OK to use matching accessories nowadays?

      • ballerinawithagun

A lovely pair of patterned Wolfords would have been perfect!

        • Jackie4g

Thank you for the education. I Googled Wolford’s because I had not heard of it. $180 for a pair of underpants? I am still laughing.

          • Alloy Jane

All the high end lingerie is priced similarly. I’ve never bothered with the knickers but the bras are super comfortable and as long as you take care of them (hand wash hang dry) they last forever. I’m wearing a Wolford’s bra right now that I’ve had since 2005 that is finally showing signs of wear. Other bras hardly lasts half that long before disintegrating.

            • Jackie4g

WARNING: To all our beloved Gays, do not read this. You will find it upsetting.
I actually do hand wash my bras because I wear underwires and that’s the way to keep them. I can certainly understand paying more for the kind of quality that lasts, but at a certain point, I would have to draw the line. Unless one is planning the Seduction of the Century, (and maybe not even then), do I grasp the concept of $180.00 for a pair of panties. Not that I am advocating the kind of Carter’s Spanky pants that the post menopausal marketplace has relegated me to, but when the peri time comes, you folks are going to be very happy there are standard issue WAC type underwear available. When you begin to nuke them, you’ll understand.
              Again, thanks for the explanantion.

          • ballerinawithagun

I’ve never worn their underpants but their stockings are worth every penny! As Alloy says below they last forever! I have cats and I have stockings (this is really embarrassing) that are 18 years old! I had a wealthy New York lover who educated me back then. I even have a Pinterest board called “Worth Every Penny” that started with Wolford stockings. Since I have been so disappointed with underpants lately, I may have to start wearing Wolfords. Wolfords will go on sale occasionally.

          • VeryNot

You can get Wolford tights for $50-100. And they last years if well cared for. They certainly pay for themselves within a few wearings if you’re one to wear tights often.

        • Alloy Jane

YES YES YES. But my guess since she’s out of country, she wants bare legs as often as possible, since their weather usually requires wool tights or something similar to keep the stems from freezing off.

    • Akmall Razlan

Did she just styled herself? Girl, get a real stylist, just focus on the acting.

    • Little_Olive

She is looking really well (those are not easy sleeves to pull off!) and it is a very pretty and put together look, but I fear the event called for something a bit more exciting -to quote @jessicafreeman:disqus-.
      I covet those earrings.

      • Rhonda Shore

I don’t know, she is such a classic beauty that i think the all black with a simple collar really allows her to shine.

    • kirkyo

I think I like the sleeves. It’s the only really interesting thing going on here.

      • 3boysful

I like the sleeves, like the dress, but it would be fun to see some more interesting makeup. Also, does she not get loaned shoes? She always seems to default to black pumps.

    • nicewilliams

      Her haircut makes me weep.

    • MilaXX

I like this and I think it’s in her wheelhouse, but I wish she’d change up the hair and wore a fiercer shoe.

    • Janet B

She looks lovely, but that has nothing to do with her clothes or accessories.

    • sagecreek

Maybe I’m just worn out, but i think she looks lovely and classy.

    • Sunraya

I agree with your sentiments so much!! She looks like a 50 year old! I am 50, and she dresses and makes up older than I do!! She has so much potential – I would love to see her use it!

    • melanie0866

WOW, her skin is white. She has obviously taken very good care of it.

    • Kent Roby

“The English Dianna Agron” totally cracks me up, yet it’s scary that I know exactly what my dearest uncles are saying (and I agree, natch)!

    • marlie

I like this dress (though I LOVED the Prada she wore at the Emmys).

      • procrastinatrice

Yep. What dreary bedspread? That gown was gorgeous.
Well, it is not the first time I disagreed with TLo. To each his own.

        • NoveltyRocker

One of my favorite looks of the night, I thought it was gorgeous too, and she in it.

          • demidaemon

Definitely agreed. I still like the contrast in looks she showed that night. She has a wide range she can work in, though she does need to turn up the style volume on a few points.

            • NoveltyRocker

I know she could turn it up—in the hair and makeup areas for instance—and I’ll love seeing it happen. But I kind of dig her real low-key way with the usually bare nails and simple, reliable haircut. I think it only adds to her impact since it seems natural to who she is.

            • conniemd

What I like most about her style is that you never want to look at what she’s wearing and remove a design element or two. There aren’t unnecessary bows or shoulder pads, or hem lengths or cut-outs or overly draped bodices. Her clothes are always simple and elegant. I think she could turn up her style volume in her hair styles and some of her jewelry and accessories without giving up her classic look.

    • Constant Reader

I actually really like this, sleeves and all.

    • LaSylphide

      Does her hairstyle ever change?

    • PastryGoddess

She has Zen radiating from her pores. Does she ever sweat or show up with a hair out of place?

    • Jacquelyn

She has such stunning hair and skin.

    • filmcricket

Miu Miu seems to really work for her, making her a rare breed. Love her skin and hair.

    • LauraAgain

Aw, she’s so pretty. She seems to want to come across as a “class act” and not a trend-follower. I love this look on her.

    • Trickytrisha

She’s always turned out so beautifully, with hardly a misstep to her name, but it can get boring. I long for a really unexpected look from her someday. Go wild, Michelle! Let your inner bad girl out. We know it’s there, lurking.

    • d4divine

It’s weird…such a heavy dress to be so short in length…

    • nannypoo

I like the dress but it needs fluffier hair.

    • kimiakay

I see her as reserved, almost “uptight.” Her look is almost always too reserved, verging on boring. I don’t like the black. The red lips and nails are not enough color, and again, I think it makes her face look sallow. Earrings are cute. She’s cute enough, just not memorably dressed.

      • Gatto Nero

The lipstick is too warm/orange. A cooler/bluer red would work better with her skin.

    • cocohall

I feel uncomfortable seeing Lady Mary’s knees. Every time. I know that is my limitation, she is not her character. Although Lady Mary, if she existed circa 2013, would be wearing some kick-ass clothes, don’t you think?

    • jif

Sheer black hose? Seriously? I suppose I am insufficiently retro.

    • Constant Cat

      Love this. Inky cool.

    • http://www.dogsdotcom.blogspot.com/ Plink

      Ho hum.

    • bertkeeter

Anything’s better than that frumpy PRADA thing she wore to the EMMYS!

    • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Why did I read “smokey eye” as “monkey eye”? Either way, I agree. Especially about the hair.

    • E2_Remote

She must spend her beach holidays under an umbrella in a closet to keep that skin looking as good as it does. That being said, she is so pale that I would love to see her with a less severe hair color. A warmer shade of brunette and lighter brows would be more flattering with her skin tone, and the Uncles are correct about needing to muss it up a bit.

    • http://somebodyhealme.com/ Diana Lee

I don’t love this, but compared to what she wore to the awards it’s divine. I do adore her with a red lip.

    • Violentcello

I love the sleeves. A different color might have been better though. You can’t really see the other detail in the top.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips

There are moments when you can really see why they cast her and Elizabeth as mother and daughter. The fourth photo is one of the.

    • kathrineb

I kind of like it. I find it kind of refreshing to see a lady her age with non-messy/grungy hair.
But I wish she would wear more colour. She is always somber and in black.

    • kathrineb

I kind of love it. “Snaps for her brave fashion efforts”

    • E. D.

      Yeah hate the shoes.
