Lizzy Caplan in Alberta Ferretti on David Letterman

Posted on September 26, 2013

Loving this look on her:

Lizzy Kaplan makes an appearance on the “Late Show with David Letterman” in an Alberta Ferretti blue velvet dress paired with Christian Louboutin pumps.

Alberta Ferretti Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Katya Riabinkina

Pure perfection. She’s got an innate chicness and poise that prevents this from looking too twee. Although granted, we could’ve done without the little bows on her shoes.

It’s like the entire cast of Mean Girls exists just to remind us all of how far Lindsay’s fallen.

Anyway, we watched the Masters of Sex pilot and we found it a little try-too-hard. For one, it had that annoying period story quality of all the characters discussing openly just how historical and groundbreaking everything is. For another, it had that annoying dialogue quality of having characters clearly and concisely state their desires, goals, boundaries, and limitations. People don’t know themselves or their surroundings that well in real life. Part of the reason a show like Mad Men (which Masters of Sex clearly owes a lot to) works so well as a period piece is because most of the characters walk through the period totally unconcerned with history and constantly repeating their own mistakes because they’re so un-self-aware. Masters of Sex has a lot to recommend it, but it really needs to learn that fundamental lesson about people and history in order to work for us.

Finally, someone wearing velvet when it is weather-appropriate.

    • wisdomy

I don’t know… it still feels too early to me. I don’t hate this, but it’s a little Christmas in September for my taste.

      • leahpapa

Fair point. Much like “Christmas creep,” wherein retailers start launching their holiday advertising earlier and earlier, I think the likes of Diane Kruger’s last-summer velvet have artificially moved my threshold. Though it’s brisk enough today that I don’t think she’s actually hot, whereas I think Diane was approaching heatstroke.

      • Jacqueline Wessel

Yes, it may be sweater weather, but for me it’s not quite velvet weather.

      • manina

I’ve heard throughout the years that that studio is always cold, freezing. Maybe that’s why she is wearing long sleeves. The weather in NY has been mid fifties to low seventies, good for velvet. She looks perfect, anyway.

        • Eileen Duffy

It is. I’ve been, and it’s in the 50s in there.

The good news is I got Welcome to the Jungle out of my head. The bad news is it has been replaced by Isabella Rossellini singing “She wore blue….velvet…ah ahhhhhhhh.”

  • alyce1213

I love velvet, but this is a skating dress.

    • Austen Jane

Thank you!! All I could think when I saw it was – hey! The Rockettes!

    • Rhonda Shore

It so is. I love the color though.

    • Belvane

Love the color, but yes, my first thought was Sonja Henie.

    • Skater dresses have been popular for a few years now.

  • hughman

Borderline Ice Capades to me. Sorry.

  • Lily-Rygh

Velvet will never not read as Holiday to me, but at least she’s creeping into the right season…

    • kimmeister

Holiday, or orchestra uniform (although this particular dress is not for a cellist).

      • Violentcello

I don’t know. I play cello and my skirts are just a touch longer than that.

Oh, but yes–totally a holiday dress. Not feeling it.

        • kimmeister

I’m jealous; learning to play the cello is on my bucket list.

I’ve always seen cellists in longer skirts but then again, the big honking cello in between your legs is enough to keep you from flashing anybody. 🙂 Our orchestra dresses were velvet up top with taffeta skirts reaching approximately mid-calf.

          • Violentcello

I think if you play in a serious orchestra you’ll probably wear a longer skirt, but I think that has more to do with orchestra etiquette than actual modesty. When I pick dresses for shows, the fullness of the skirt has more to do with covering .. you know, stuff … than the length.

Also, you should totally pick up the cello. It is SO fun.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

She looks FANTASTIC! This is NOT a skating dress. It looks like perfection on her. I agree with the bows, though.

    • gabbilevy

I saw it as more modern Joan Holloway, speaking of Mad Men.

    • Sinéad Doyle

It’s not a skating dress but I’m convinced she’s about to start Irish dancing in that!

  • Happy Chanukah everyone!

    • PastryGoddess

      winna winna winna

  • PlethoraofBooks

Her lipstick is jarring for me here.

    • PlethoraofBooks

That said, I like the dress. And I could have done without the bows as well.

  • RussellH88

Maybe it’s because it doesn’t have the runway lighting, but it looks kinda cheap in the real world.

But she still looks good. She has all of my Party Down love.

  • MilaXX

The dress is okay, but I don’t like the gold in that black shoe. I’d prefer a sold black. I had a feeling Master’s of Sex might fall into the try hard category. My TV dance card is getting pretty full, I may let this one wait until the summer and marathon it.

    • PastryGoddess

On Demand it? That way you can keep up without actually having to “keep up” ya know

      • MilaXX

I may if it gets decent buzz. I’m already DVR’ing stuff so that doesn’t leave much time for On Demand viewing if I plan to ever see sunshine or breath fresh air again.

    • sagecreek

I hear ya. We’re doing the entire Breaking Bad AMC marathon.

      • MilaXX

        I am too.

      • mlle

I just started Breaking Bad and seriously considered taking today off work so I could marathon hard enough to be caught up by the finale.

        • sagecreek

It was very upsetting, I had to clear my DVR — you know, taking off all those obscure movies off Sundance that I haven’t watched for 6 months but was just about get to ANY DAY NOW.

          • mlle

My entire Netflix queue is movies that I really need to see… one day… soon… no, really.

  • Jacquelyn

I need this dress to be in my closet now, thanks.

  • frannyprof

Lovely and ladylike. The perfect antidote to Whihanna Montana. And Paula Patton.

  • PastryGoddess

I’m a fan of this look, but maybe in November, not September. It’s not THAT cold just yet

  • Danielle

    • SinisterKid

      So suck on THAT!

    • carnush

Me too. She was the reason I watched Party Down.

  • filmcricket

Wow, that’s 90s-looking. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I saw it and went “Oh, hello, first-year-university!”

  • kimmeister

    Her eyebrows look perfect.

  • OMG she’s from mean girls. What?!? How did I miss that?
Anyway, her coat {not pictured} was gorgeous as well.

    • twocee

      I missed it too.

    • rag254

      Janis Ian!

  • bellafigura1

I want to like this so much, and I don’t. It’s made me grumpy. Velvet is so hard to wear across the bodice, and this just looks bulbous and thick up top. The shoes are ok, I guess, but I don’t think they work so well with that brocade stuff. I don’t know. I’m not seeing it.

  • teensmom99

Those shoes & her hair/makeup keep it from looking too Nancy Kerrigan. Wondering why TLo hate shoe bows so much. I must confess that I sometimes like them and think they work well with these shoes.

  • I’m having Winona Ryder flashbacks with her head.

  • nannypoo

I like this, especially the shape and color. I was thinking she must be hot in velvet, but I notice the guy behind her is wearing a jacket, so maybe it was cool in New York.

  • Sam Smith

Meh, color is nice but I don’t really like anything else. Seems way to early for velvet and this seems to costumey.

  • Kent Roby

This reminds me so much of Lexie’s original (and final) outfit in the original Ice Castles, which means that I LOVE it!

  • Imasewsure

Wow I hate all of this including her hair. Luckily I am unschooled and often wrong! But I don’t like it… 🙂

  • gracedarling

Lizzy Caplan is the reason I cut a fringe, despite knowing that it would only look good one day out of three. Such a gorgeous head.

(Okay, and the dress is exquisite too, but I can’t even begin to aspire to that one!)

  • formerlyAnon

I love velvet and I like the shape of this, but it feels off to me. Someone called it a skating dress – I wouldn’t go that far, but there’s a hiccup for me. Maybe the floral embellishments just strike me as a tad unsophisticated?

Like the shoes more than I’d have believed if you’d described them to me. Bow a bit much, yes.

  • quitasarah

I’ve heard that it really ramps up in episode 3, I intend to stick with it at least till then. I did order Showtime for it, after all!

  • decormaven

Those lil bows on the shoes are giving me eye twitch. Gorgeous color of dress, but just looking at velvet makes me feel sweaty. But hey, she’s up in Sweater Weather. I’m down here in Sweat Weather.

  • marlie

I MUST HAVE THOSE SHOES. I love them, bows and all. And Lizzy looks cute (still a littler wintery, but cute, nonetheless).

  • Trickytrisha

“She wore blue velvet… la la la… bluer than velvet were her eyes!” except they’re brown, aren’t they? Kinda hard to tell. Lovely silhouette on her, just a tad too winter office party for me. Overall, quite lovely.

  • LaSylphide

Dress seems a little mature for her, but oh my, that color on her is beautiful.

  • ewes_urn_aim

This is a great look- for DECEMBER. But for early autumn? Naaaah

  • carnush

Love her and LOVE this look. Her hair looks amazing.

  • tetisheri

Love! I want that dress so hard.

  • lalahartma

Save that dress for Zooey. Hating the velvet.

  • RuthGo

Sorry, September when its still in the 70s in NYC is not velvet weather. If this was around Thanksgiving, it would be great.

  • VicD

She looks like she’s skating for France at the 1924 Winter Olympics. Love the color, but that dress does not work for me.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Who is this chick and why is she wearing her Christmas dress in September? Cute shoes though!

  • <3 lizzy caplan. thats all.

  • melanie0866

I like it, but if it was shorter it would look just like my sister’s high-school majorette uniform from 1976.

    • ewes_urn_aim

In that last photo, all she needs is a baton in her right hand.

    • ewes_urn_aim

I forgot to say that I’m in love with your cat. 🙂

      • melanie0866

Thanks! She is, in fact, an excellent cat.

  • kathrineb

I feel so conflicted. I love this colour on her but I am not a fan of velvet at all!

  • Therese Bohn

I heard a review for Masters of Sex on Fresh Air with Terry Gross the other day, and they said it gets better @ episode 5, so maybe it’s worth it to stay tuned in.

Love this dress, and she’s lovely.

  • Fuchaforever

No no no no! It could work…with ice skates.
