Kerry Washington for FLARE Magazine

Posted on September 12, 2013

“Scandal” star Kerry Washington covers the October 2013 issue of FLARE magazine in Miu Miu photographed by Ruven Afanador and styled by Erin Walsh.

On rooting for the mistress: “A lot of people have had an affair. Most people haven’t had an affair with the president of the United States. But they can relate to it… I had girlfriends calling me from week three [of Scandal] going, ‘I’m really uncomfortable. Why am I rooting for the mistress? I’m a married woman!’ And I would say, ‘It’s OK, it’s OK.’ … There are some ways you want to be Olivia Pope and some ways you want to do a major intervention for her.”

On her love of fashion: “The red carpet is good marketing. When you work so hard, you should stand behind the project in a way that magnetizes people. So I, like a good, only-child student, studied fashion and decided I was going to play that game, and fell in love with it, and with the artists and designers.”

On childhood ambitions: “I didn’t think I would do this for a living—because I didn’t know anybody who did. I come from an academic family, so I figured I would have a real job.”

On Olivia’s bad behavior in season 2: “I was like, [wailing] ‘I just don’t know how we’re gonna do this!’ I had just gotten back from the Democratic National Convention, where I’d done this speech about the importance of voter inclusivity and democracy and ‘We the People,’ and I come back and my character is spitting in the face of all of that.”

On the challenging of being an only child: “You feel like the pressure’s on you to live up to all of the dreams and expectations, because you’re it.”

On why she loves acting: “I love those moments that are few and far between, where you’re so deeply, deeply invested in an imaginary world that you truly forget yourself for a little while, and the only reality that exists is the reality of that scene. That’s like drugs to me,” she says. “And it is hard to find that high, but that’s what you work for.”

I think she looks great, but what’s with the peekaboo hose in 2/3 shots?

    • MilaXX

I guess it’s supposed to be scandalous?

    • e jerry powell

      DO NOT LIKE.

It’s antithetical to who she is in general, and completely out of bounds for Olivia Pope.

And then there’s the thing about the white shoes and black stockings.

    • marlie

Ties in to the whole “mistress” idea? Dunno…

    • Sobaika

It’s not very ‘her’ and the prim smile and pose isn’t doing much to sell it. It could have been cute and sexy but it just comes across as incongruous.

  • Katesymae

She gives good face AND good quote. Brava!

  • MilaXX

Her hair looks really pretty in that last shot. I don’t like those white shoes on the cover shot. CANNOT wait for October 3rd to get here!

    • kimmeister

Light shoes with dark hosiery has always been a peeve for me.

  • annabelle archer

    And it shows.

    • marlie

She doesn’t always get it right, but she certainly has a fun time trying. Plus, she has good style instincts, even if they’re not always perfect.

  • Danielle

    EXCELLENT face, Miss Kerry!

  • teensmom99

Is that vintage miu miu. Because if not, it looks like same old same old.

  • hughman

Kerry is gorge but those hose always remind me of knee-highs my Grandma would wear under a housecoat with slippers.

    • Donna Tabor

      With a rolled garter?

      • hughman

Yes! And a pack of Pall-Malls slipped in the top.

        • Donna Tabor

Lordy. She must have been related to my grandma!

  • Rhonda Shore

    A smart and gorgeous celebrity.

  • foodycatAlicia

I love her, but I don’t think those clothes are worthy. Fawn maternity smock? PUHLEASE.

  • Tatiana Luján

    She’s amazing.

  • formerlyAnon

Like her quote about the red carpet. REALLY like the head shot with the scarf & collar in juxtaposition, liked it less as a full body shot.

The last shot is maybe her prettiest of the three. And I don’t say that merely because I don’t want visible thigh highs to become the next ubiquitous fashion trend.

    • e jerry powell

Visible thigh highs are so 1991.

      • Donna Tabor

        Or 1968.

        • e jerry powell

          It goes in cycles.

    • DuBey2

This: REALLY like the head shot with the scarf & collar in juxtaposition, liked it less as a full body shot.
I may be the odd one out here, but I really loved the 2nd photo. Just ignore the thigh highs, but that hair, that white blouse with the Proenza Schouler skirt: LOVED it!

  • Sarah

She sounds smart and nice. Good for her. However, I think that every one of these looks is “not her dress.”

  • KateShouldBeWorking

God lord this woman is composed: both her brain and her appearance.

  • sagecreek

White pumps with navy stockings? Please tell me this isn’t in.

I like the interview, though. She sounds refreshingly grounded.

    • MilaXX

I think fashion has been trying to make white or light colored shoes with dark hosiery happen for a minute now.

      • alyce1213

There are so, so many reasons that should never happen. I don’t know where to begin.

        • marlie

          Reason #1: It’s ugly.

Reason #2: It’s not flattering on anyone.

      • e jerry powell

Actually, they’ve been trying to make it happen since at least Joan Collins’s second heyday.

  • alyce1213

Can’t say I like the clothing, except the crisp white blouse, but ain’t she smart and purty?

The cover is almost seizure-inducing. I can’t even focus. Horrible, horrible cover.

    • SugarSnap108

It’s actually shocking how bad that cover is.

    • e jerry powell

To be real, I had never heard of FLARE magazine until today. Now I will have to put a little effort into forgetting it.

  • kimmeister

I covet the cover coat with a vengeance.

  • Mori Rene

wish she would’ve had a darker lip colour on the cover shot, something about her face is throwing me off… but she looks great in the inside shots. that middle one in partic is great

    • e jerry powell

I didn’t think that trying to match the lip to the coat was a particularly good choice either.

  • ashtangajunkie

I realize that white pumps are trendy, but surely someone at Flare looked at that cover shot prior to print and thought, “There has GOT to be a better shoe for that.”

  • Jacquelyn

I don’t like the orange-ish thing happening with the pink coat.

  • amanda siegelson

i hate all of these outfits. i don’t like scandal as a show – but i do adore it for a lesson in amazing outfits for kerry. so to see her in outfits that don’t even sniff at what she wears onscreen, is just disappointing.

    • fursa_saida

Her COATS on that show are just incredible.

  • bertkeeter

Awfully pale. Doesn’t look like same person that was at PROJECT RUNWAY finale to me?

  • Trickytrisha

Geez, that cover is not doing her any favors. I mean, tacky thigh high stockings? Actually, she’s so much better than any of these pics, it’s a travesty. She’s a smart, gorgeous, and very savvy woman. The only good thing Flare did was her quotes.

  • Aurumgirl

She’s looked so much better. I really dislike everything they’ve put her in–and white shoes with dark hose, plus a literal potato sack of a dress worn with white stockings. With so much fantastic clothing out there, they dressed this gorgeous woman in hideousness.

  • marlie

She looks fabulous, I LOVE her in the coat on the cover.

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

Oh thank you Kerry. I feel better now. After Jenny McCarthy I needed someone with class to undo what I had just seen.

  • makeityourself

Awful choices of garments, awful styling, no focus. Distracting hair, retouching that makes her look white — what a yucky shoot. She’s too lovely for such a lackluster effort.

    • halleygee

Agree… her hair in the middle photo is a mess, I would not leave my house like that.

  • quiltrx

I hope she’s going to hyphenate…Kerry Washington-Asomugha has such a delightfully snotty ring to it!
(and congrats to them, love them both)

  • stephbellard

I would go lesbian for her.

  • macwell

Absolutely stunning….and the clothes are nice too 😉

  • crash1212

This is a stunning woman who can wear clothes really well. Whoever styled this shoot – Erin Walsh? – should be shot. That cover is atrocious. Her hair is awful. Also, did they lighten her skin? Such a wasted opportunity for Flare.

  • Cate

Something about her just makes me want to cry (in a good way). Her face is so beautiful, yet DARLING in a very distinct way, like a sweet little bunny rabbit. Love seeing her in photo shoots and on the red carpet.

  • RussellH88

Despite being a bit Minnie Mouse-y, I love that coat on the cover.

But getting to her quotes, I’m always confused about people are adamantly rooting for Olivia and Fitz to get together. One thing I do love about Scandal is that it really doesn’t shy away from showing that these two are pretty messed up individuals with a lot of darkness inside of them and part of what draws them to each other is just how messed up that relationship is.

  • DominoEstella

    damn that coat is killer

  • roxyturtle

She looks great and I love all the attention she’s getting!
