Katy Perry in Alice + Olivia at Killer Queen Germany Perfume Launch

Posted on September 26, 2013

After that last post, we think we’d be utter hypocrites if we bitched about this look:

Katy Perry at “Killer Queen” Fragrance Launch at Douglas Parfumerie Store in Berlin in an Alice + Olivia outfit paired with Christian Louboutin shoes.

Alice + Olivia Fall 2013 Collection

Because whatever quibbles we may have with it, we can’t deny our very first reaction:

“Oh, thank GOD. STYLE.”

But we’ll tell you our quibbles anyway. That bow simply has to go. It took a really killer-stylish outfit dangerously close to costume. And… that’s it, really. No other quibbles. We question those giant hoops going with anything else in this look, but they don’t hurt our feelings or anything. It’s really just that awful bow.

Loving the shoes and thigh-highs. And the hair really makes the look. It’s pretty much the go-to Alice+ Olivia hairstyle, as you can see by the model shot, but it really works.

    • Lilithcat

I don’t know. I kind of like the bow. Though I’d like it better if it weren’t so droopy!

      • Violentcello

Me too. Maybe a fluffier bow instead of the flat T-shaped one here would be better.

        • mmebam

I’m thinking skinny neck tie, myself.

          • TLJezebel

            Exactly. Good call!

    • tonibaloney

      LOVE the hair and makeup!

Totally agree that the bow is out, but I would have loved to see the jacket with some sexy ladypants

    • Michelle Wilson

I must disagree. I find the whole look incredibly unflattering. She’s a tiny little thing and there are way too many horizontals cutting her up into tinier little pieces.

      • mhleta

Thank you. “Dumpy” was the first word that came to mind. Hardly the desired result.

      • Introspective

wholeheartedly concur. and i definitely disagree with the hair being a good look. that braid grates.

      • http://instagram.com/gioioio gioioio

I like the look but agree with you about the proportions. I think the socks hiked up above the knee are a bigger problem than the scale of the print.

      • Rhonda Shore

This all worked much better on Alicia Silverstone in “Clueless.” Here, the proportions of the boots and miniskirt are making her legs look short and heavy…something is off, but i love her in red and black. NO BOWS please…no need for frou frou.

      • Aurumgirl

I think so too. I know she’s skinny, too, but those thigh highs and boots and giving her very thick legs.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I hate the bow too, mostly cause it looks half assed. I have to disagree about the shoe/thigh high combo. It doesn’t seem to be doing her any good.

      • 3boysful

Plus the shoe/thigh-high gives off a very creepy sexy schoolgirl thing.

        • MoHub

The whole thing said “Catholic schoolgirl” to me.

          • RedRaven617

And not in a sexy way; pervy is more like it.

            • MoHub

Yep. I originally typed the word pedophilia but removed it as it made me uncomfortable.

          • H2olovngrl

I am getting more of an English schoolgirl /schoolboy thing. Like she should be playing with ac/dc or something.

      • ballerinawithagun

At least she is appropriately covered…I’d change lots of things but the thigh highs bother me the most. The whole line would have looked better with simple black tights as she has fabulous legs and the thigh highs are are just chopping them into wide pieces.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

That’s my biggest issue with them too. They hit her at the wrong place.

        • kimmeister

The lighter color of the booties juxtaposed with the black hosiery is also adding to the stumpifying effect.

      • tb

Working AGAIN tonight? I have a sad if you do.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

          Hey tb.
Its my regular gig now. So unless I get another sked change in the future,…
          (sighs with head in hands)

          • tb

That does it! Pulling out the novenas in three…two…one. Expect to get a sked change soon.

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Virgin Sacrifice may be required. But I appreciate both the efforts, and the feeling behind them.

    • Latin Buddy

LOVE THIS! It’s like she’s on set for The Craft: Nancy’s Revenge.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I have zero desire to be in on the inner workings of the John Mayer’s sexual fantasies. If he has a Swiss School Girl/Sexy Secretary fetish, and Katy wants to indulge in that for him, I don’t need to know about it.

    • claudemtl777

She’s numero uno with a bullet on my irrational dislike list.(Fireworks is the WORST song of the millenium. She’s ripping off one of my favorite bands, Queen, to name a perfume that I’m sure smells like a mixture of Raid and cotton candy) Every quirky outfit makes me hate her a bit more..

      • Michelle Wilson

I really don’t love that she’s using the name of a Queen song either. It’s unseemly to hawk your bullshit perfume using the goodwill earned by someone much more talented. Call your perfume Roar, or Kissing Girls or something.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

I’ve seen a few students walking around my college in plaid skirt and thigh high socks…seems like we might be moving towards another homage to Clueless (which isn’t the most terrible 90’s fashion to revisit)

    • jtabz

      Sad trom-bow-n.
      (scutters away.)

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

The earrings have to go, but I guess they were chosen to take down the twee.

      • sagecreek

Yep — to me they keep it from being too sweet.

    • formerlyAnon

I like the bow better than the earrings. I also think the hair color is too flat and would have preferred a different shoe – high heeled lace up ankle boot or at least something that did not have the two-tone/spats effect. But I love the ensemble, quibbles aside.

    • Jessica Freeman

I really do not like this. It looks so frumpy, especially with the bow…and the knee socks and booties are not working for it either. Pass.

    • kmk05

I hate the bow, but i REALLY wish she had worn this with boots. As it is, it kind of looks unbalanced to my eyes, with a lot of weight (broad shoulders, puffed out skirt) up top, which isn’t balanced by the more severe hair.

She is gorgeous, though, and I’m just quibbling.

      • sweetestsith

I completely agree. I love the look, but would have loved it even more with boots. It’s boxy to be sure, but doesn’t look frumpy to me. Boots would have been a smidge more balanced, but I think overall proportions are nice. Adore the plaid, adore.

        • kmk05

I think the thigh high tights don’t help with the proportions, unfortunately.

I wish I could rip this off her (not the bow) and run away with it.

      • decormaven

Another vote for the boots. It would have given more of a clean line; with the thigh-highs and the shoes, I’m puzzled about where the hosiery ends/shoes begin. And while I’m not a fan of those oversized hoops with this look, she gets props for jewelry (wish I could see the ring in more detail.) Say what you will, this gal can rock a red lip.

    • Chuck Barthelme

Exactly. Bow feels like an afterthought, and like it’s just pinned on. Otherwise, great outfit!

    • SewingSiren

Pretty much love the whole look. Especially the neck bow and the braid.

    • 3boysful

I’m still needing an eyeball cleanse from the Paula Patton post.

    • elemspbee

so very hailee steinfeld. or even elle fanning.

sans the thigh high socks, perhaps.

    • sagecreek

She looks adorable. Although I regret to report that I received a free sample of that perfume…yowza, it’s nasty. As in 1981 Avon product nasty.

    • AmeliaEve

I am always a sucker for a Chanel-style jacket. I really love the suit and blouse, and I’m not even down on the idea of a bow, just not that bow. This one looks listless against the bulk of the wool jacket. A big poofy taffeta bow would match the weight of the fabric better and still convey her cartoon style.

The shoes are just wrong, though. They cut the line of her leg in a very unflattering way and make me confused about what is going on around her ankles. Again, I think she needs to just embrace the manga style of it. Patent leather mary janes would make this about perfect.

    • DuBey2

I like it all. Even the bow. W/o the bow, the white blouse would look too expected. I don’t know to explain myself.
But I would LOVE to know where to find those thigh highs (which come just abov the knee, so I guess they are
over-the-knee-Hi’s). They would go great w/several things.

    • kittenwithaquip

The flash of red of the spiked Louboutins offends mine eye, but I have to remember that not everyone defaults towards their Doc Marten Mary Janes like I do.

There rest is quite cute, and I worried I would have to defend that hairstyle, but I think we Kittens can agree that she has a style. It may not be our style, but at least she’s interesting.

      • formerlyAnon

        With you on the Louboutins.

    • Kent Roby

I’m assuming that someone forgot to tell Katy that the new Sound of Music has already been cast (and that she’s too old to play a Von Trapp daughter to Carrie Underwood’s Maria, lord help us)

    • LadyCelia

Giant hoop simply don’t work with Heidi hair.

    • MilaXX

I’m the opposite. I hate those hoops with this look, but the bow doesn’t bother me. I do have to give it to Katy, she truly goes all in on her red carpet looks.

      • random_poster

All in is a perfect description for her. I can’t think of a time when her look was half-assed. I can appreciate that.

      • 3boysful

I just realized the hoops (which I agree with previous poster were likely a de-twee-er), combined with the hair, kind of read a little tribal, which clashes with the Minnie Mouse makeup and Catholic schoolgirl outfit.

But she does have a style.

    • Joanna

Love this. It’s back to a somewhat cartoony, but more mature, version of Katy Perry, which I like infinitely better than the “Grown Up & Boring Katy” we’ve been seeing recently. I like it when she shows her kookiness just a little.

    • Donna Tabor

From the ridiculous to the sublime.

      And back again.

    • Tanya Wade

I loathe The Perry, but damn, this outfit is hitting all my sweet spots. She’s pretty tied to the Heidi Hair, so that’s not going away anytime soon. I, too, question the Jody Watley hoops with this. There is a time and place, dear.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

      Cher Horwitz? Love!
But I hate that hair. It’s a total monet.

    • Hoffa_w_HerHead

If the jacket were fitted, I could get behind this look more fully! As it stands now- 5/10

    • Nancer

I love the boots on the model!

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I always thought hoops went with everything. This proves me wrong. A bow could be cute, but not that one.

    • BrooklynBomber

Bow gotta go. But I’m not crazy about the over-the-knee socks, either. Not flattering.

    • HM3

Dislike the hair and hoop earrings…a bit TOO close to ACTUAL Catholic schoolgirls out there: it is beyond costume, and just shows a confused persona. Dislike.

    • tb

She looks like a clown. Oops-cranky. Where is my coffee?

    • RuthGo

I actually kind of like the bow but I hate the thigh highs. But she should definitely keep this kind of look going, it’s really in her wheelhouse.

    • H2olovngrl

      She is a TREASURE!

    • luluransom

Lose the bow, lose the hoops. Otherwise, carry on.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

This large red plaid only looks good on the runway or the red carpet. It’s too large to appear in a room full of people. The three B’s must go, the boots, braid and bow. The earrings are wrong, very wrong.

    • Aaminah Khan

Plaid miniskirts paired with either tights or thigh-highs are kinda my thing, so I’d be a bit of a hypocrite if I bitched about this. Something about the proportions is off, though. It’s making her look boxier than it is. Maybe if the jacket were open like it is on the model?

    • xmixiex

      LOVE it.

    • carnush

The kid in the third picture will never be the same.

    • Diego!

I love this look… It reminds me of Britney Spears’ …Baby one more time attending university (?) Katy looks gorgeous, crazy and fun hair!

    • fauxprah

      always a drag queen.

    • Imasewsure

Ditch the bow and soften the makeup a bit. Otherwise love this

    • Elizabeth Hille Cribbs

      Jersey mall rat.

    • SportifLateBoomer

I think overall she looks adorable! It shows a lot of humor as well as style. I hate the bow. though. too big. Had to wear the mini, mini version of that bow in maroon when I went to Catholic school, which could have something to do with it. Love the hoops, to me they are just slightly “street” so they give a little bit of edge and tough-girl.

    • lundibleu

I like it, minus the bow. Though she has a bit of a rictus grin, rabbit in the headlights look in that direct head on shot.

    • little_miss_strange

Anyone else getting Nazi off her in these pics?

Do NOT approve of her using a Queen song for the name of her shitty perfume.

    • regina arthur

      Ugh!

    • alyce1213

I’m just so glad she’s over her blue period.

    • Shawn EH

Not minding the bow, it’s squared off like the plaid at least, but she’s got to do something new with her eyes. Switch to Rimmel London maybe, something that is more flattering than those falsies with natural eyeshadow and her high forehead.

    • DinahR

I think this is cute, the bow seems limp – but that’s the only problem I have with the outfit. I don’t this this hairstyle is doing her any favors though. I like the braid updo, just not this version on her. I think she needed more volume somewhere.

    • OffToSeeHim

I think this is the stupidest outfit I’ve ever seen on a grown woman.

    • CommentsByKatie

Hate the ‘new’ Katy Perry. Before, she was kind of in between costume and fashion, which was fabulous. Now that she’s trying to dial it down, everything looks kind of half-assed and awkward. Blegh.

    • GSMSF

Wow, she sure has changed her look!

    • Sam Smith

I hate the bow,and I’m surprised that she replicated the runway look so exactly. I thought she was more original than that.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

That boxy jacket is never going to be the friend of a woman with a large bust and small waist, whatever Coco Chanel thinks. I love the outfit, and wish I could wear it without looking like a high-fashion brick, but being rather Katy-Perry-shaped myself I think she should send it on to Dakota Fanning. The rear view is pretty bad.

      • Not applicable

i was thinking the same thing! And she’s just a bit short waisted too- so the jacket looks a little bulky on her- and maybe just a tad too long (just not tailored enough) I think it’s a cute look (minus the hair) but you’re right it’s tough to pull off unless the proportions and fabric are perfect. I thought this missed the mark for Miss Perry.

        • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

          I love your Stephen Fry.

    • Trisha26

Oh please, so her “new” image is plaid “school-girl” skirts, braids & knee socks? Over it. (And ditto the comment below about her using a Queen song title for her perfume. Just no.)

    • Tracy_Flick

      Recipe:
      – Take 1 tired Lolita schoolgirl outfit,
      – Add a generous pour of dominatrix
      – Finish with a pinch of nineteenth century child’s sailor outfit
      – Garnish with Heidi braids, and makeup that gives the impression that your lips are floating an inch above your face and your eyes are sunken two inches below.

I give this dish one star. I hate it, but the suit could possibly work in another context, on another person, in a parallel universe.

      • gsk241

I agree. This is so school-girl fetish it makes me uncomfortable. It looks like she’s starring in a Sailor Moon crossover porno in her mind.

    • Bernadette

The hoops are way more distracting than the bow.

    • Fordzo

      What small pupils you have…

    • Mudskipper

I’m totally going to bitch here. If Paula Patton’s look was biker’s dream of celebrity, this one is schoolgirl/Lolita slut outfit. The bow makes it complete. And why she didn’t dye her hair blond? Just wonder…

    • Jacob Bowen

I HATE the hair. It has been her go-to hair for a little while now and I can’t help but thinking “Milk Maid”.

    • Sara Brams-Miller

See and the first thing I said was, the socks have to go . . .

    • Sally3000

With the exception of the boots, I’m getting a strong Lucille McGillacuddy vibe.

      • Therese Bohn

        Oh Rickeeeeee!

    • frannyprof

TLo, I fear you have been blinded by Paula Patton’s exploding bush. Katy’s plaid/thigh-high/braid combo is Not Good.

    • Gauss

The bow is hideous, but the rest of the outfit is very, very cute.

    • Therese Bohn

Her hair color, smile, and makeup remind me of Allison Brie.

I like the model’s boots better, lose the bow, otherwise cute.

    • Miranda

I do not for one minute believe Katy Perry is a real human. I don’t know what mad genuis psychopath created her in his lab, but she is a robot. That is not a real woman.

    • miscorrections

I can’t even see the outfit; I’m stuck in her crazy eye high beams.

    • Trickytrisha

Bows at the neck always remind me of the polyester blouses my mom wore back in the day.

    • Jai Piper

      It’s Buster Brown’s sister

    • gksp

Horrible. Creepy, pervy and disturbing. Oh and unflattering. Can’t believe TLo like this. Seriously.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I love it on the runway. But with the bow… And the thigh-highs… And the footwear… And the pleats make her butt look big, which means no real human has a chance in hell. I need to go back to the runway picture. I love plaid. I love pleated skirts and a coronet of braids and little matchy jackets. Just not on Katie Perry.

    • quiltrx

That’s a super-duper sad bow. But otherwise, I like the suit, and even the parts I would quibble with are so very Katy that I can’t fuss.

    • Zaftiguana

You know why I think I’m feeling the hoops? Because that’s exactly so many of us CA girls where wearing in the 90’s when the whole opaque knee-highs/thigh-highs thing came into youth-culture style in a big way. I have to wonder if it’s sort of an homage to that. Glad she skipped the unfilled liner lips, though ;).

    • lonepear

Katy Perry is on my irrational celebrity love list.

    • ItsDicey

Say bye-bye to the bow and I’d totally dig this. LOVE love the shoes and thigh-highs. LOVE. The hair? meh.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Fabulous except, of course, the very sad bow. Love the boots with the plaid.

    • Erica_Vuitton

So she is dressed exactly like the model?? I miss the fun candy coated Katy. This is SO BORING and unoriginal. If you’re there to launch your new fragrance “Killer Queen” don’t you call up The Blonds and have them come up with something… well killer? This is like Catholic school girl not Killer Queen.

    • kathrineb

I like it but I hate the hoops.

    • DailyDose

      Japanese elementary school girl uniform.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

i just wanna rip that sad-ass chorister bow right off her. then i’ll feel better.

    • tereliz

Nope. This is the woman who wore D&G like it was made for her all summer. Send that baby-doll shit to Elle Fanning.

    • irielle

I thought the jacket was boxy, even on the skinny model, but I absolutely agree about the bow.
