Juliette Lewis in Naeem Khan at the August: Osage County Premiere

Posted on September 10, 2013

We were all set to sing out praise for this look, partially because it’s a pretty great look and partially because we adore Miss Juliette.

Then she had to go ruin everything by turning to the side.

Juliette Lewis attends the premiere of “August: Osage County” during the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival in a Naaem Khan champagne short-sleeve silk crepe gown with gold floral beading and open back paired with H. Stern jewelry.

There’s “Girl, that dress is too tight,” and then there’s “Girl, that dress is so tight it’s making you look a little deformed.” How do you politely say to someone, “Honey, you’re looking a little like a centaur tonight.”

And it’s a shame, because it’s such a pretty gown. One size up would have made all the difference in the world.

    “Gimme an ESS!”

    • Meg0GayGuys6

S! You gotcho ess, you gotcho ess!

  • Jessica Freeman

It’s kind of bizarre what happened there. The model photo looks like a beautiful, flowy skirt. On Juliette it looks like a horribly done mermaid skirt.

    • alyce1213

      Yeah, they ruined it.

    • And it’s not like Juliette doesn’t have lithe frame. She’s not a curvy gal, she came to this dress with the right body shape for it.

  • Heartbreaking.

Anytime the quandaries “scoliosis?”, “second trimester?” and “ass padding?” cross your mind, you know you are looking at a fashion fail.

  • Janet B

    Gorgeous dress on the model

  • RussellH88

She looks like Alexis Mateo padded her ass. BAM!

  • Stella Zawistowski

Can we also discuss what’s going on on top of her head? Because I think that’s what my hair looks like in the middle of a CrossFit class.

(Agree that it’s a gorgeous dress, a size too small)

  • Lori

This is definitely way too tight and yet, she still managed to look better than most of the other women at this premiere. Fashion-wise it was a rough night.

  • marlie

It’s a gorgeous, gorgeous dress, and she looks amazing, but I’m sure she couldn’t sit down all night for fear of busting out a seam. Sweetie, go up a size.

  • Big Bear

You go up to them and you say: “Honey, you’re looking a little like a centaur tonight.”

    • SewingSiren

Hopefully before they go out the door.

  • Fordzo

I honestly think her tush padding has slipped.

    • Kimbolina

And in that one pic where she’s holding her butt, looks like she’s realized it too…

  • alyce1213

Juliette seems to have fallen of the crazy train. What an elegant dress — too bad about the poor fit, it might have been an all-time best.

    • charlotte

Right? If you had asked me who might wear this dress, I wouldn’t have said Juliette Lewis. Not in a million years.

  • Coleen

It’s super egregious because the model’s version is more of an A-line than a mermaid silhouette. Juliette! You go do some fashion auditing right now!

  • SewingSiren

It is a beautiful dress for her. But it is too tight. You have to be careful below the abdomen when you have a centaur body. I should know.

  • Jacquelyn

Was she even able to sit down?

    • madscntst

I’m reminded of the episode of I Love Lucy where Lucy wore a dress so tight to a party, she had to eat standing up.

  • Adrianna Grężak

The dress is a bit tight, yes, but her shape has to do a lot with her posture. As “fitness” magazines remind us, a lot of women have that “pooch.” This is what a woman looks like when she doesn’t have defined abs and she enjoys pasta once in a while. We’re so used to skinny celebrities and models that we throw stones when one is standing naturally and stopped sucking it in for a few seconds.

    • mixedupfiles

Posture, certainly, but it’s not about a pooch. It’s like the top half of her very lithe frame is shifted 3 inches in front of the bottom half.

      • Adrianna Grężak

But that’s how women who aren’t a size 2 look like

        • ConnieBV

She is also doing what Tyra refers to as “the butt tooch” which is pushing the booty out in an effort to make it look like there is more going on there than you think.

        • mixedupfiles

It’s how a size 2 with that shape looks, if that’s how she chooses to have her skirts cut.

    • CommentsByKatie

I am this ‘small pooch / big tooch’ shape – the centaur look is because is tight below the abdomen. If it were loose there, dropping straight down from the pooch instead of hugging it, she would have looked slammin’ in this dress. I have had to put so many dresses back on the rack because of this very problem. I can’t believe that she and her stylist don’t know this by now.

    • Getoverit

Yes! I am somewhat fit and trim but have the stress/wine/beer/carbs pooch. Some cuts of clothing emphasize it while others don’t. I dig that shes not bone thin and if she likes the dress so be it. Plus it looks like maybe the camera caught her moving which made it even more awkward.

    • But we didn’t say anything about a pooch or about her abs. It’s still a way-too-tight skirt, though.

      • Getoverit

Bottom half is too tight but if she went up a size in the dress it seems like the top would be too big.

  • NBG

Sending virtual daggers to whatever stylist wrecked this lovely dress. Also kind of glad that we can’t see her shoes because odds are…

  • mhleta

I don’t think one size up would have helped. I think she needs a good chiropractor to correct a severe case of lordosis.

  • Erica_Vuitton

It’s like real time Photoshop fail.. wtf?

  • paginatrix

As my dear Mama always said, “Being able to zip it up and looking good in it are two separate things.”

    • poggi

Exactly! I have actually said to myself in the dressing room, just because it zips doesn’t mean it fits.

  • MilaXX

    just one size up…

  • GorgeousThings

You know, people seem to think that “bias cut” means “stretchy” (which it does), which means “I can wear one size smaller than usual.” Which becomes (case in point) an unmitigated fashion disaster.

  • jjtxgrrl

    I love her!!

Despite the Ill fit on the dress…her skin looks AMAZING…..and real. Not drawn tight and unnatural like some middle aged starlets.

    • SouthernGirlRena

I LOVE your avatar pic – cutest little pug face ever.

      • jjtxgrrl

That’s her “sad puppy” face. Which she will do with the right tone of voice on command. 😉

  • LaSylphide

That fit is sort of a crime against fashion, not to mention poor Juliette, who looks marvelous from the front. Beautiful dress.

  • KayEmWhy

Gasp! and not in a good way.

  • Joyce VG

    Still love her.

  • P B

    AROD approves.

  • mjude

    oh come on juliette!

  • Laurie Landry

Old grey mare comes to mind from the side view (sorry Juliette, I do love you).

The top portion beading and belt is beautiful the fit is bizarro.

  • OH DEAR.

  • Trickytrisha

Geez, what’s her butt doing halfway down to her knees? She’s so super cool, maybe she planned this? Heh.

    • snarkykitten

she’s hoping to get the starring role in Escher Girls: The Movie

  • clairellis

    It’s like she’s standing wrong.

  • Targettaste

It’s definitely too tight, but the weird proportions make me think the picture was snapped at an awkward moment, as she was starting to pose, but not quite there???

  • throwaneyeonthis

Nothing to add about the dress. I think this is the best her make-up has ever looked. And, if they could have kept the bang out of her face, the hair looked pretty too. Good attempt to look a little more soft and put together.

  • HM3

I sympathize: this happens to me all the time when I wear gowns. Either the entire dress is too large, which would take a crapload of tailoring (which I could never afford–though admittedly, Lewis probably could), or it fits everywhere except my belly/butt, creating a weird protruding belly and butt where I have none. What’s a girl to do?!

    • Getoverit

Agreed. A size up means the top would have been too tight. Of course you would think she had the bucks to spring for some alterations or custom fitting.

  • Anathema_Device

Aww, what a shame. It is such a great dress and would have been a home run had it fit properly. It kind of looks like she is making it worse by doing some kind of back-arch pose. If she sucked and tucked, it might have worked?

  • RoseJB

I was thinking, “Meh, it’s not THAT bad.” And then you said centaur.

  • snarkykitten

The way my spine is, I always look like a fucking centaur. So solidarity fistbump?

  • Vaniljekjeks

Oh my god… can’t breathe… that centaur comment… I have tears of laughter. The cat is giving me looks… I love you guys <3

  • Synnae

I think we can all safely agree that dress wasn’t fitted to her shape as the top half is in fact the right size.
Girl has a pear body shape with a bit of a belly, which is quite a common shape actually, but you have to be aware of it, when putting on clothes and when posing. Because that back arch pose is not working either…

  • Kimberlini

    Centaur? I was thinking dolphin.

  • She’s always had a ‘different’ body. But I don’t think it needs to be larger, it’s just her. And it’s a really lovely look on her.

  • ankali

That looks like her posture’s fault, not the dress’s.

  • ThaliaMenninger

It’s the famous S curve from 1890. You know, when they had long corsets and bustles.

  • quiltrx

Ugh, I have a sad. I like her a lot, AND from the front the dress was all Gene Tierney realness.

  • Diego!

“Honey, you’re looking a little like a centaur tonight.” RMFAOL hahahahahaahahaaa xD

  • megohd

    That is a tailor failure.

  • Clydette Wantland

How about some good `ol SPANX? All the famous ladies are doing it.

  • Shawn EH

She’s so womanly and lovely these days. I’m just going to focus on her face.

  • ellisd123

I just bust a gut laughing at this. Juliette, what are you doing?!

  • kathrineb

    I am in total agreement
