Joe Manganiello in John Varvatos at the 2013 Style Awards

Posted on September 06, 2013

After years of us complaining to him about his beard and shaggy hair, Joe finally gave in to our pestering and had his head did up all nice and clean-like:

Joe Manganiello attends the 2013 Style Awards in New York City.

Unfortunately, he wore a lovely – and focus-pulling – pube-fringe scarf, which means any changes to his head aren’t really registering at the moment.

Did he overdo it on his mascara or is that just us?

He done took a flat iron to his pubies.

  • Jaeda Laurez

He doesn’t need that scarf. Or shirt. Or pants.

    • kim bunchalastnames

IS there a shirt? i’m just … not sure. it looks like he went commando under that vest. if such a thing is possible.

  • Jessica Freeman

I will take scruffy Joe over pube scarf Joe. No, not really. I’ll take him. Period.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I like him as scruffy and rough looking as possible.

      • Emily

Agreed. I don’t like him clean shaven.

      • Vitantonio Bino D’Ambrosio

He’s just better with a beard!

      • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Yep. Glad I’m not the only one that prefers the rough look.

        • fursa_saida

Me five, or whatever we’re up to. I don’t even particularly like him that much, but much better with the beard.

  • Vickiefantastico

This is going to sound weird, because I actually prefer him clean shaven like this, but now he looks generically handsome to me. Before he was scruffy, but at least he looked different from every other handsome guy.

    • RedRaven617

I agree. I would never known who he was had I seen him on the street without the beard. He looks good, but not like himself.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

It seems so churlish to complain when I’ve been asking for this for so long but… he has less character in his face when he’s cleaned up. And that scarf and ring are poor substitutes for personality.

    • RebeccaKW

I was thinking the same thing. He looks good, but he looks so much better with just a little scruff. I’m also not sure I like this Ken doll hair. I might like the short hair better if it was a bit mussier.

  • anotherkate

Wow. I have always found him ferally attractive, but I didn’t realize how damn CHISELED his face was under all that manly beard! Suffice it to say, I like.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

So, no shirt then? Just a scarf under the vest? That’s a thing? Whatever, who am I kidding? I don’t care. All I can think about is the fringe tickling the inside of his well muscled thighs. And once my mind goes to his inner thighs, well, all trains of dirty thoughts have left the station.

    • demidaemon

      THIS, indeed.

  • Heather

He’s a bit Frankensteinian (is that a word?), but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

    • tereliz

      Frankenstein’s Monster-ous?

      • demidaemon

Well, I believe Frankenstein was supposed to be the best parts of different men all put together, so perhaps Joe is a bit closer to Mary Shelley’s version than Hollywood has us think.

  • Lisa Sangermano

Does he have Mitt Romney hair or am I in a bad mood?

    • joancarol

Def needs to scruff the hair a bit.

    • alyce1213

Well yeah, he does . . . but it looks better on him.

    • Aurumgirl

You’re in a bad mood. That’s Don Draper hair.

  • Scimommy

Oh, it’s ALL registering over here all right. He looks like a movie star from the 40s. Someone who plays Tarzan or some other muscular hero. I dig.

    • RebeccaKW

Let’s get him in a loin cloth.

  • amanda siegelson

so – does the disturbing scarf mean that we get to ignore the upturned collar look???

or the fact that the material of the suit looks like its made of jeans???

    • Getoverit

Right. Lose the suit and just wear the scarf. Lets see that.

    • Derek_anny

I see Bollywood silks. So Joe’s the random American businessman in the musical, and this was the closest the costume department could get. I want to see this film.

  • In_Stitches

Is that a denim 3 piece suit? The vest is problematic. It’s stance is so high…much like large busted ladies, large busted men need to throw in some vertical lines, to let the look breathe. He should have ditched the vest.

Edited to add, this reminds me of the PR menswear challenge when a designer couldn’t put together a shirt in time, so he/she just threw a scarf around him underneath a jacket. I think it earned him/her a ticket home.

    • Heather

My dad had a 3-piece denim suit in the late 70s. He wore it with cowboy boots.

      • demidaemon

        That is…frightening.

    • Aurumgirl

If it is a 3 piece denim suit, a hell of a lot more is problematic than just the vest. If he’d ditched that, you realize we’d be looking at Mr. Cleanshaven with no shirt, pube scarf, and a popped blazer collar. See what I mean?

  • Jacquelyn

The scarf is pretty distracting. It wouldn’t be bad if it wasn’t hanging so low, I think.

  • decormaven

A chenille scarf? I like my sausage in a plain casing, thank you.

  • lobsterlen

How convenient Joe comes with his very own restraining scarf …

  • LauraAgain

Pube-fringe scarf? HA HA HA HA HA!!!

  • Tatiana Luján

he doesn’t look like he’s wearing any mascara.

    • In_Stitches

I’m not seeing any either. His lashes aren’t curled so they stick straight out, creating a thin dark line, but it looks like it’s all lash to me.

    • Getoverit

      Im not seeing it either.

  • babylonsista

    Neh.

There are some men for whom facial hair is a necessity. Joe Manganiello is one of those men. Oh, he’s plenty handsome enough without it–all soft-skinned and square-jawed. But that magnetism is sheared smooth off without the beard. And the chenille scarf seems to drain him of even more masculine charm.

    Again: neh.

  • par3182

Noooo, put him back the way he was.

  • ana170

He looks better without the beard than I would have thought but I’m still not impressed. Maybe I need to see him act. I’ve only seen him in Magic Mike and he was forgettable in that.

    • MartyBellerMask

Do you ever watch How I Met Your Mother? He’s Marshall’s friend Brad. The groomsman who for some reason wound up shirtless.
I tried to watch Magic Mike but I HAD to turn it off before it got to the good stuff. So bad.

  • MilaXX

Lol I have to admit it oes look a little bit like he tight lined his upper lid. I think I like clean shaven Joe

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I could look at that face all day. And yes, I like him much better all cleaned up like this. He’s dreamy.

  • lexilexi

He looks douchey to me. I like him messier and scruffier.

    • conniemd

This. I think it’s totally the clothes, though, that make him look douchey. It looks like with the right togs he could channel George Clooney. But I do like a man who looks hot and male with scruffy.

  • Glam Dixie

How can someone who appears to be wearing a 3 piece denim suit with a pube scarf look so damn good? The world may never know. ETA: There may be some sorccery involved.

    • SRQkitten

We would probably not be able to handle it if he cleaned up AND dressed exquisitely. We may never, sadly, have this theory tested.

  • LadyCelia

Damn, but he cleans up nice. And it makes him look younger.

    • MartyBellerMask

      It does.

  • alyce1213

Wow, he’s old school chiseled and handsome, isn’t he? I like the the tamed hair and touch of grey at his temples — it’s nice for a change. He doesn’t have to look the same all the time. This is not to say I don’t like rough and scruffy Joe –they’re both beautiful.
The scarf in lieu of shirt is just wrong, though.

    • Linda LaPaz

      Love the grey sideburns too!

  • Luneowl

He looks so much better than I expected. For some reason I thought he’d have more of a hare lip. Maybe he cleaned up everywhere and that merkin scarf is a way of compensating? :)

  • fauxprah

Varvatos = cheap VF Corp lackluster SHIT. BEWARE. Yeah – rock n roll…….uh huh…..

  • Eric Stott

Now he’s sharp and handsome, but he also looks kinda generic. There has to be a middle ground.

  • Mrs. Julien

Does anyone else feel like that scarf and how he is wearing it tell us all we need to know about his real life personality and not in a good way?

[fingers crossed that Henry Cavill has appeared in public recently and will be included today as last Sausage Friday was a complete wash out for me objectificationally-speaking]

  • Janet B

He has a very nice face, maybe it’s too nice.
A well groomed beard is probably a better choice for him.

  • ballerinawithagun

He doesn’t look as happy go lucky & carefree clean shaven, but may be it is just the atrocious ensemble of too much navy that is making him look so uncomfortable. Maybe just one step at a time–either shaggy hair and clean shaven or a nicely trimmed beard and styled hair.

  • Zaftiguana

I miss the scruff, and I just can’t get behind an un-ironic denim 3-piece suit in 2013.

  • stephbellard

I still wanna climb him like a tree.

  • DTLAFamilies

Is…is that a Canadian tuxedo? *cries*

  • LJCdoc

    Mmmrrowww.

  • MK03

I miss the beard and the shaggy hair. He just looks so damn good with them.

  • ChiKat67

    Scroll down dick fringe.

  • Rand Ortega

    Cleans up nice.

  • Imasewsure

He really has a gorgeous face… great with or without the beard – and yeah and his clothes… meh

  • marlie

He should just take the scarf off. And the rest of the clothes for that matter.

  • osu86

I’m pretty sure he is ONLY wearing the scarf – no shirt. Who was that Project Runway contestant that sent her male model down the runway with a vest and a scarf? She ran out of time to make the shirt or something. That’s all I was thinking when I saw this. She must feel so vindicated – such a visionary!

    • demidaemon

      Carmen something or other.

  • tereliz

Huh. Clean-shaved is not a great look for him. And I hardly even noticed the pube fringe what with the Texas Tuxedo. (thanks, Varvatos) The whiff of douche is even stronger when its not masked by all that facial hair. Guy just doesn’t do it for me when he’s all cleaned up like this.

  • Scott Fitler

Wrong oh so wrong. Bring back the beard. And something about the hair and this styling… I just picture him bringing the date home and flipping on the bachelor pad music and disco lights…

  • Lucas

Why oh WHY did he tuck that scarf in? It doesn’t make any sense!

  • ConnieBV

I just want to go on the record that no less shits could be given by me on what he wears, ever. That gaze is calling me and I’m a comin’. Also-going.

  • Diego!

    *SPEECHLESS*

  • Maggie Smith

So, I’ve Never been a fan of his. Well, I take that back, his physique is Incredible, I just never thought he was handsome in the face. I am taking that back now. This hair and a clean face does Wonders for him! He should keep this look. it’s a shame about that scarf.

  • JP

Cleaned up, he could be a young Bruce Campbell.

    • Supernumerary

Thank you. By the second photo that was all I could think, and now I can’t un-think it.

      • JP

Is that a good or a bad thing?

        • Supernumerary

It’s Bruce Campbell. Always a good thing.

          • JP

            Aw, yiiiiis!

  • jen

He is so clean shaven it’s freaking me out! He is a hunka-hunka man, damn!

  • MartyBellerMask

I am a big fan of Shaggy Joe, but even I must admit he looks quite nice all cleaned up. Except for the Steven Tyler nonsense under his suit. What is up with that? Is he even wearing a shirt under there?

  • e jerry powell

Now he looks like Griffin Dunne. Not the upgrade I was hoping for.

  • JaCory Deon

Sigh. Just a very handsome man.

  • crash1212

I wish you would leave him the hell alone! He’s much more sexy with the hair and the scruffy beard. Now he just looks like any other Ken Doll guy. Also….does he not have mirror? Did he not know that he had a crotchal fringe situation here?

  • frannyprof

Huh? What? *climbing out of the depths of those beautiful brown eyes*

  • Lilak

All neat ‘n’ clean, he could be Greg Louganis’s brother in that close-up.

  • Synnae

That scarf… Considering he was there to give Jon Varvatos an award, he was most likely styled by the man too. At least I hope so because else? Mega-douchey and very challenged in the checking oneself in the mirror before stepping out the door department. That said, the actual suit has been tailored very well to his not very standard frame. Which gives him one up on most of the red carpet to be honest.

BTW, Joe cleans up nicer than expected – in fact quite classic Hollywood – but I still prefer the long-haired, scruffy, jeans and tight black tee version.

  • lisaepc

It’s you….yes loose the scarf but he is so pretty! And look! His pants are hemmed! :-)

  • julnyes

    scarf as shirt, Joe? Really?

  • write_light

wtf mascara? pubes are a scarf, but you see what you see, I guess. better with hair and beard as well – so we completely disagree. :D

  • Sarah

If you’re looking at his scarf, you’re doing it all wrong. Love him clean-shaven!

  • steeg of their own

Holy shit, he looks like a different person! I think 4-days-of-stubble-but-not-quite-a-beard is my favorite look on him. He definitely needs to discard the pubic fringe, though.

That should be a band name. Tonight! Discard the Pubic Fringe is opening for Pinafore on their recordbreaking IllAdvised Tour!

  • Kimberlini

He is so much more handsome without the scruff. Maybe that’s why he goes that route – the anti-pretty boy look.

  • Veronica1022

Isn’t there supposed to be a law that JM is forbidden to wear shirts?

  • quiltrx

I vote he goes for a sexy goatee next, to see what that’s like. He’s really handsome clean-shaven…but (and I generally do not like beards) he really smolders when he’s scruffy.

  • ShaoLinKitten

    I want the scruff back.

  • J. Preposterice

    I…

    I…

    I’ll be in my bunk.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Love the clean shave almost as much as I hate the scarf.

  • Alloy Jane

Poor Sampson. Personally, I feel like he shaved off the charm. And I am not a facial hair fan. I like men who can grow facial hair, but I prefer when they shave it. He is the exception to this rule.

  • Aurumgirl

Who sees eyelashes when there are pube lashes? Not me.

  • jw_ny

horrible suit and ridiculous scarf! he always comes across douchey to me.

  • suzinrva

    He was wearing a scarf?

  • formerlyAnon

Sooo improved without the scruff. This is what Clark Kent really looks like, IMO.

  • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

I think his head looks fine! The scarf thing, though, was a WTF! moment for me.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Shaven or not, he’s a beautiful man. The outfit, however, is tragic.

  • GinaGeo

More scarf under vest: see True Blood Season 5 Premiere.

  • librarygrrl64

Even with the cock fringe he looks SO much better!
