Joanne Froggatt at the “Still Life” Photocall

Posted on September 03, 2013

We don’t know… the dress is cute and all, but it’s not quite coming together.

“Downton Abbey” star Joanne Froggatt attends a photocall for “Still Life” at the 2013 Venice International Film Festival.

We like the shape and the color here, but there’s something just slightly juvenile about it. The shoes look kinda harsh and we’re not loving the hair at all. We realize it’s sometimes a shock to see anyone from the Downton cast in modern dress, but we don’t think that’s what’s causing our negative reaction. The swimming pool hair is really killing it – and not in the good way.

And sure; why not:

They are so going for the big glossy melodrama gold star this season. We’re just barely this side of a trashy romance novel. The show’s always teetered on the edge, but it’s never been so likely to tip over. Mind you, that’s not necessarily a bad thing if it’s done with a little wit.

The 3-inch-thick layer of pancake make up on her face aren’t doing her any favors either!

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

She has the prettiest smile. Her, Maggie Grace, and Emmy Rossum. They have such lovely smiles.

      • Danielle

It’s the “realness” of it, I think.

    • Dan_In_NYC

I think she could sell this look with a little POSTURE/ATTITUDE. Agree the hair could use a boost, but I think some hand on the hip, shoulders back sass would go a long way here.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

      It’s kinda cupcake.

      • Louise Bryan

That, and it’s too scarlet red for her. She looks a bit like she has rosacea in that color.

        • AnneElliot

I have an irrational dislike of blondes wearing read, I don’t know why.

    • Aidan B

Yeah, not my favorite of her looks. The dress is cute but the shoes are too big and she needed to pull her hair up. She still does better than the other 99% of the cast, though, so I’m willing to let this one slide.

    • MilaXX

The hair is wrong and the dress comes off as too young. I also think the eye makeup is a bit harsh for this look.

    • hughman

If she stood on one leg and wore fishnets, I’d buy that lamp.

      • Imasewsure

Beautifully stated and unfortunately also accurate – not a good look

    • msdamselfly

I agree that it’s the hair that’s ruining it. The dress is beautiful on her

    • Linda LaPaz

I was going to say “jejune”.

    • 3boysful

This is probably just my issue, but I don’t like when you have low pleats like that which essentially form a dropped-waist, then add a belt at the waist. Like having competing focal points in a room.

Lose the belt, add a statement necklace, and I could go with it. Esp if you also sub a snazzier shoe.

      • Rhonda Shore

The pleats are the problem, they aren’t well executed, the dress has an ice-skating aspect to it (though it’s too long for that).

    • kimmeister

I think red is not her color, at least not that particular shade. The shape would have worked better if the skirt had been 3″ longer.

      • Coleen

That’s exactly what I thought. Girl, that is not your Red.

    • Alice

At least she’s wearing a belt!

    • flamingoNW

Too short, was my initial reaction…

    • Trickytrisha

Juvenile was exactly the word that popped into my head too, uncles. Maybe she woke up and thought “I know! I’ll be Kiernan Shipka for a day!”

    • Imasewsure

20 Year High School Reunion – and not looking all that good for that either

      • Chaiaiai

Way harsh, Tai;) I’d KILL to look that good in….shit, 4 years. Get thee to a gym, self!

    • jw_ny

The dress is ok…kind of reminds me of a cheer leader uniform tho…probably because of the dropped waist and pleats. What bugs me most about the look, even more than the JBF hair, is her eye makeup…way too dark and heavy for an otherwise daytime look.

      • Lilak

You bet . . . I think we’d all like to see her, just once, back off on the eye makeup. Always seems to be pretty heavy-handed with that stuff, regardless of the occasion or style of clothing.

Have a little confidence in your own looks, Miss J!
Except we haven’t been able to talk the Duchess of Cambridge out of her own teenage eyeliner, so . . . ;-)

    • sagecreek

After the overwrought dresses we’ve seen today, this was refreshing – fresh, age-appropriate, and suited well to the event.

The hair is a disaster, but you can’t have everything.

    • Cheryl

Wash your face, put your hair in a ponytail with a scrunchie, and you’re good to go. You’re welcome.

    • Heather

Mmmm, no. Just looks a bit Kohl’s to me. Right now the side bar on my browser has an Anthropologie ad with a photo of a dress that would look cute on Joanna here. Joanna, quick, get thee to an Anthropologie!

      • CupcakeKate

LOL! I looked at that photo and the first thing I thought was “didn’t I see that dress at Kohl’s last weekend?”!

I am positively blinded by how much I love that dress. I think she looks great.

    • Kate4queen

Um as a romance writer, I’d like to say we’re not trashy at all. We write about love, and happy endings and stuff that makes people happy, which is a good thing in this sometimes unpleasant world.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Um, we never once said all romance novels were trashy.

    • Jacquelyn

She looks very young, but not in a good way. If she were actually younger then I wouldn’t have any qualms because I really do love the entire look. It just reads more “teen” than “adult”

    • cowper

Pink makeup is clashing with red dress.

    • http://www.thirteen.org/program-content/dispatch-from-the-downton-abbey-diaspora-16/ Gotham Tomato

She always looks adorable – though I don’t like the shoes here because of the way her feet are coming out of them (but that seems to be a common hazard with the current extreme pumps).

    • kathrineb

Thats kind of harsh I think she looks amazing and I love the dress. I don’t think there is anything wrong with a girly dress. Does every outfit have to be so serious and grown up?

    • Diego!

I tell you whats wrong here: Hair, Make Up and Shoes. Therefore this look is not really working at all!

    • marlie

She looks pretty, but the whole thing is rather… standard.

    • Little_Olive

‘s okay. the correct styling would have made a big difference, to the extension of the dress’ ability -it’s a very cute dress, lacks something of an edge to give it full styling potential.
      It’s only a photocall anyway.

    • crash1212

I love her hair! To my eye, if she’d had something on one wrist it would’ve brought everything together.

    • Lilithcat

there’s something just slightly juvenile about it.

I think it’s the length of the skirt. If it were longer, this would be more adult. Also, a wider belt might help; this one looks like an afterthought.

    • lobsterlen

I am never wowed by anything Joanne is wearing on the red carpet but I am wowed by her adorable personality that always comes through. She always looks like she is enjoying every moment and she seems like a lot of fun.

    • melanie0866

The dress doesn’t work because it looks like my sister’s junior high cheerleading uniform from 1971.

    • Tuneful54

It’s the raccoon eyes for me. Arrrghh!

    • oohsparkley!

It’s a very flattering dress on her. The look lacks sophistication. Some edgier more stylish shoes and bracelet and she’d be working it.

    • demidaemon

Yeah, not a fan of the bust or hip pleats. Weird.
