Jessica Paré in Altuzarra at the 2013 Style Awards

Posted on September 05, 2013

Anything called the “Style Awards” without us on the guest list is surely a somewhat suspect affair, no? But we’ll be magnanimous anyway. It’s in our nature.

“Mad Men” star Jessica Paré attends the 2013 Style Awards during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Spring 2014 at Lincoln Center in New York City in an Altuzarra dress.

Altuzarra Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Chiharu Okunugi

Alrighty, then. “Soft” was not on the menu tonight. A lady who picks this look doesn’t give a shit if she scares off boys. She welcomes it, in fact. We think the dress is pretty amazing, even if it does kind of look like something Bluto’s girlfriend would wear to have a fistfight with Olive Oyl. But since the dress has some severity to it, we think she should’ve toned down her other choices. Hair’s too slick, shoes too pointy, lips too red, girl.

  • Slade Thunderdragon

    I love that neckline.

    • Kate

She fills it out much better than the model

      • Bridget Smith

It’s also cut differently. I like this version much better, even if it ruins the coat vibe.

  • She looks fierce!

    • Lucía Gavello

I agree, I’m loving the 80’s power bitch vibe, she has the bone structure to pull it off.

      • CommentsByKatie

Exactly what I was going to say! Love it!

    • That is a va va vaboom look for sure. However, if my hair looked like that, I’d wash it before I’d leave my house.

  • Jacquelyn

I don’t mind the red lip or the shoes but I agree that the rest of her makeup is too heavy and dark. And her hair should have been something lighter and playful. That dress is wonderful, though.

  • I think going for full on “Hungry Vampire” was a bit much.

    • Levedi

I was thinking Cruella deVille the early years, and admiring how committed she was to the character.

      • Alloy Jane

Me? I was thinking Morticia during her stint as a flight attendant.

    • StellaZafella

Possibly a great Natasha…with Danny Devito as Boris…but who would play Bullwinkle?

      • Pitch meeting, we need a pitch meeting, STAT!

      • MarissaLG

        Seth Rogan? lol

      • Louise Bryan

Yep, definitely a Natasha Nogudnik vibe.

    • marlie

YES. She totally looks like she’s in costume to play a vampire in a made-for-TV movie.

    • MissusBee

      Dark Shadows.

    • demidaemon

Personally, I prefer TLo’s comparison just because I know someone who looks *exactly* like Olive Oyl and imagining her in fistfight with Jessica Pare as Bluto’s girlfriend makes me smile.

  • SewingSiren

    Severe disciplinarian.

  • Too many buttons. I prefer the runway straight-out double breasted version.

    • conniemd

oh you’re right. I hadn’t noticed thedifference The model’s dress is much better.

    • Getoverit

Agreed. I wonder if the buttons would have bothered me so much if they were all the small size on the bodice. The big ones on the hips are grating on me for some reason. Although I like the bodice, I don’t like it with the bottom of the dress. I too prefer the runway version.

  • Meg0GayGuys6

Joanie would look good in this, no?

  • Tatiana Luján

I love the pointy shoes with that dress, but the hair and makeup are too harsh.

  • i love a good fashion dominatrix. i dont love the shoes, but they cant ruin this.

  • Of all the women in the world who should NOT draw attention to the mouth…

    • Spicytomato1

That seems uncalled for. The lipstick might be a bit harsh, but I, for one, think she’s lovely, mouth and all. And it’s sad to me that people think she’s unattractive because her teeth aren’t from the Hollywood mold of (often utterly) fake perfection.

      • Imasewsure

I didn’t see this as a slam about her teeth but just because her mouth is so large compared to the rest of her tiny tiny angular face.. she looks like she’s all mouth with this harsh lipstick. Maybe I read the comment too generously… dunno…

    • JasmineAM

As a girl with imperfect teeth: fuck off. I don’t get why people think it’s okay to body snark about her teeth each time she’s featured? As much shit as she gets for them, she obviously doesn’t care because she hasn’t changed them a bit.

Also, I’m told nearly everyday ,by strangers, how beautiful my smile is.

      • Addictedtowhitewater

I have to admit my insecurity about my own imperfect teeth & larger than average mouth/lips led me to getting them fixed (braces) in my late 20s. There were several positive side effects- no more teeth grinding/headaches and I no longer cover my mouth with my hands every time I smile, laugh, or talk (never realized I did this until after I got the braces off, such a crazy subconscious habit!) but I sometimes miss my gaps and such (and like you, I was always complimented on my smile pre-braces and thankfully am still complimented post braces). Oddly enough, even though I was so insecure about my own teeth I still love crooked smiles, or any feature, that makes someone uniquely beautiful. There is nothing so beautiful as a warm, real smile so you go on with your imperfect teeth and gorgeous smiles JasmineAM and Jessica!!

    • Orange Girl

She’s gorgeous, even with imperfect teeth. Jealous?

  • appliquer

  • VioletFem

    She needs more voluminous hair.

  • Tanya Wade

It definitely skews more Natasha (Boris’ squeeze) than Bluto’s GF to me. I once had a dress like this in my deep gothy phase and I loved it. In this case, I like it with the boot on the model better – but there’s no denying Jessica’s got the body to rock it. Makeup is a bit aging.

    • Dan_In_NYC

Def more Natasha to me too. Overall, I love that she went full-on severe. That’s some serious drag contouring on her face. Overall I like the idea of the make-up but the actual execution here makes her skin look dry.

Am I wrong for wishing she had a riding crop as an accessory?

      • DarcSwan

It’s the contouring I can’t get behind – she has great cheekbones, they don’t need the extra help!
Still, she cuts a striking, if costumey, figure. I love that its unexpected.

  • Courtenay P

    this is hot.

  • Clueless_Jock

  • Jessica Freeman

    Mob wife.

  • CPK1

Indeed, how can they have Style Awards without T Lo. Sounds very dodgy to me. Love, love the runway version and styling. Jessica’s not so much. She looks good in the dress but the rest is too Mistress of the Dark. Awful make-up

  • MilaXX

I think she could have kept the red lip if she had softened the hair and the shoe.

  • shelbywoo

Seems like she’s giving evil lanky Dita Von Teese, no?

    • Constant Reader

I thought the same thing at first glance: Dita’s evil sister.

  • Harsh! So very harsh. I might be a little afraid.

  • Spicytomato1

Makes me think of the Robert Palmer ladies of the 80s. Her version is pretty fierce.

  • mjude

TLO says: “look like something Bluto’s girlfriend would wear to have a fistfight with Olive Oyl” LMFAO!!!

    i do love the dress

  • Not applicable

i think she looks awesome. Sure the close up shot of her face was a bit weird- but overall, I think the slick hair & red lips and curvy black dress really set off her key features- her amazing bone structure, great lips, big eyes, curvy bod, and most of all her incredibly gorgeous skin!

  • leahpapa

I think she’s one of the best looking aspects of Mad Men, so I usually find that her real-life iterations – since she is not, in point of actual fact, the stylish wife of a rich advertising executive in 1968 – fall short of that. I suppose it’s an impossible bind for her: she looks stunning in 60s silhouettes and hair and makeup, but to overuse them would desperate and immature – “Remember? I’m on that show!” But I rarely see her in anything that compares to the chicness and elegance of her costuming. (Except, er…when she’s on her soap. That stuff is hilarious and/or ghastly.)

    • marlie

Perhaps she has some of the same issues that Christina Hendricks has, in which her characters clothes and general style really suit her, but then who wants to essentially be in character ALL the time?

  • RebeccaKW

My biggest quibble is the hair. She should have gone severe, with it slicked back like a Robert Palmer video girl. Or softer.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I think i’d like this better if she learned to pose with her mouth closed. #TinyShade. I don’t like the hair though- too flat, too thin. In this particular case, some tracks for “fullness” at the bottom would help. But i do love the dress and the shoes.

    • marlie

Or an actual smile. I don’t think that half-open mouth pose is flattering on anyone.

  • decormaven

Not a fan of the red shade of lipstick or the visible toe cleavage, but she is rocking that dress.

  • bertkeeter

    Hallelujah ..Awesome fit…HOT!

  • Chuck Barthelme

Totally agree. Dress is great, but the hair, shoes and red lip are kind of ruining it.

    • conniemd

Yep. It looked much better on the model because the styling was much softer. Her hair needed some life to it.

  • ballerinawithagun

I love the neckline, so flattering. But I despise the shiny buttons! Buttons and bows that do not serve a purpose are one of my pet peeves. At least on the model version the buttons are working buttons, still hate the shininess.

The lighting may be making her make-up look more severe. She definitely needed to practice her bitch face a little more if she was going to go for this look.

    Beautiful shoes.

  • MissMariRose

    Elvira has a business meeting.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I like that she committed 100% with the make up and hair

  • crash1212

I like all her choices except the hair. Love those shoes with the dress…and that dress is FIERCE!

  • nannypoo

I hate it all. Way too severe.

  • FeistyKat

    Modern Morticia Adams….

  • Nancer

Whoa. Love this. I think it’s fine sometimes to really amp up the volume and just run with a look or a feeling. After all, I’d rather have drama in my clothing than drama in my life! :]

  • Feathers McGraw

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

Natasha, Boris Badenov’s girlfriend would wear this.

  • Little_Olive

It’s very much the contouring and the lighting. Those sucked-in cheeks make her look like Nadja Auermann’s mother -and I’m not sure it’s a good thing.

    • Garcia Loca

I’ve never seen Nadja Auermann’s mother, but it sure sounds like a good thing.

  • Terry

Man, that’s a lot of toe crack showing with those shoes.

  • Garcia Loca

It’s a Dita Von Teese look, if I ever saw one, but Miss Pare is pulling it off nicely.

  • H2olovngrl

Make-up that emphasizes your resemblance to David Bowie is probably NOT the way to go. She does look rather arresting though.

  • Poeta Paz

I don’t like the hair at all. I like the idea of red lips but for some reason that particular red makes it too severe. Maybe a darker red???

    • filmcricket

      Agreed, it’s not her red.

  • Aaminah Khan

I kinda love how fierce she looks. Here’s a bitch who will fuck your shit up if you so much as look at her the wrong way. I like that.

  • Therese Bohn

She looks great! (But I’ve never liked toe-cleavage)

  • This would be much better with different shoes and fuller hair, maybe with a fringe. I like severity, but she should take hints from someone like Betony Vernon, who tends to offset her dominatrix look with more glamorous hair.

  • Lilak

A very modern, citified Morticia. Though I’d be saying Ava Gardner (!) if she’d done something different with her hair.

  • kimmeister

I’m a sucker for a good coatdress and both hers and the model’s have me drooling. I can live with the shoes, but agree that the hairstyle and lip color aren’t working for her here.

  • marlie

The dress is fine and I like the shoes, but the hair and makeup are way, WAY too severe, and really unflattering.

  • veracity

  • LocMama

She looks amazing! Wish her hair was curly & soft to contrast the power of the outfit. She is working the hell out of this silhouette & the shoes don’t bother me.

  • jen

I agree with you boys. The dress, which is fab, plus the hair and makeup make it look like she fell out of a Robert Palmer video.

  • Imasewsure

“Looks like something Bluto’s girlfriend would wear to have a fistfight with Olive Oyl”…. Well blow me down… that is funny! And accurate as usual… 🙂

  • Sylvia

Step away from the countouring cream Jessie, and that is not your red. You look like you’re in budget Morticia Addams cosplay, and that is not a good look.

  • ThaliaMenninger

She’s angling for a role on a vampire show, isn’t she?

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Love everything but the hair which should be bigger.

  • Amber J

I agree the makeup is a bit harsh, and her hair is way to slick looking. I like the dress, though.

One thing I love..that close-up shot of her face shows some fine lines on her forehead. I appreciate the fact that she’s not botoxing those to oblivion.

  • Darren Nesbitt

Girl that’s not your dress, it’s Dita Von Teese’s

  • Shawn EH

Chiharu wins with her weird eyeshadow and … are those thigh boots?

  • Kelly

A little too Vampira for me. “Bluto’s girlfriend” — ahaha.

  • ellabob

Love the dress but she should still keep her mouth closed – those teeth are insane!

  • Trickytrisha

Yup, the dress is peachy keen. The rest scares me. I need a cup of chamomile tea.

  • Suzanne Johnson

To me, she looks like the femme fatale in a 1940s noir film.

  • Linda LaPaz

How do you think this dress would look on Christina Hendricks?

  • mickiemonkey

She is very beautiful and that dress is perfect for her. But her hair, her hair! (hand-over-mouth)

  • Pennymac

    This is just….Harsh?

  • CommentsByKatie

If Severus Snape were an 80’s power bitch, he’d look like this. I couldn’t love this more.

  • Cate

Total Milla Jovovich in “Zoolander” going on here.

  • Alloy Jane

I love this. It IS a tad costumey, but I can dig it. I think she doesn’t smile because her gums are kinda all you see when she does. No idea why she’s always showing her teeth though. Puts me in mind of a beaver.

  • JasminJay

She looks good and very glamorous on that beautiful dress. I love her height ! Her hair is ok but the makeup is a little bit too much though but no doubt the amazing shoes are just perfect for her long and sexy legs!

  • quiltrx

I love the dress, but I really think I prefer the model version. Great either way.
She looks REALLY severe. I don’t know if it’s the hair and makeup or her face is thinner–but she looks overly angular and harsh.

  • Sweetpea176

    She looks like Sharon Needles.

  • E2_Remote

She looks like a Bond villain. Remember Xenia Onatopp, the chick who killed people with her thighs?

  • Captain_Awkward

She picked up Christina Hendrick’s dress by accident. Understandable mistake.

    • bellafigura1

Yeah, not her dress by a mile.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I love it as it is. It’s very “Laura Palmer at the waiting room”.

  • LauraAgain

If her hair was softer I could live with it.
But she looks like a tranny here.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

She looks awful. She looks like she’s sucked one too many necks.

  • lobsterlen

She has very high check bones naturally whoever did her makeup went too far in highlighting her already high cheekbones. I think if they toned that done some she would have looked perfect.

  • VicD

    Elvira’s fashionista daughter
