Jennifer Garner in Dolce&Gabbana at the Dallas Buyers Club Premiere

Posted on September 10, 2013

We want to like this, because bless her heart, Miss Jennifer does tend to go a little frumpy on the red carpet and we were momentarily dazzled by a red lace dress, which is something we have never seen before here at T Lo Obscure Fashion Items, Inc.

Jennifer Garner attends the premiere of “Dallas Buyers Club” during the Toronto International Film Festival in a Dolce&Gabbana dress paired with a Max Mara clutch, Brian Atwood pumps, and Tiffany & Co. jewelry.

To be fair, the lady really put the effort in and glamour was clearly the goal, what with the wearing of Dolce & Gabbana, as well as about 5 or 6 pounds of diamonds. But while her head looks pretty (and her feet, for that matter), we really can’t stand that fleshy-looking satin. It’s an awful element to add to a basic red lace dress. The shoes are cute, and we’d normally rail against the silly putty color, but we can’t claim they don’t go with the dress.

Also: That is a borderline-obnoxious number of diamonds to be wearing on one arm, to a film festival premiere.

Its awful. There I said it.

    • demidaemon

      And it was said well.

  • That is one seriously fugly dress, period.

  • Just because I don’t like illusion netting and sheers doesn’t mean satin curtain fabric is the way forward. I’d love the chance to wear borderline-obnoxious quantities of diamonds though.

    • filmcricket

Yeah if I got to play in the Tiffany vault I’d have a hard time saying no to anything.

    • housefulofboys

I read TLo’s comment and the first thing I thought was how much I would love to be obnoxious like that.

  • Daisy Walker

Ok, we’re 2-for-2 on red/putty combos for the day. Please don’t tell me this will be a theme.

Also, I actually like the lace work, and I normally hate lace. Shame about the rest of the dress.

    • mshesterp

If the lace went to the knees instead of the ugly satin, I actually would like it–I don’t mind the satin at the top. I think she looks rather pretty.

      • Daisy Walker

Yes, that would be a HUGE improvement.

        • Alloy Jane

Srs. Who thought it was a good idea to stop it so short? My only addition to this sentiment is that she needs to take off that ugly ring sitting on top of her wedding band and she’d be fine. Love the hair/makeup.

      • twigg

agreed. Right now it looks like she wrapped a doily around her waist.

  • Jacquelyn

Maybe if the entire dress had been lace….but I do agree that the skin toned color underlay isn’t helping anything. She has a pretty face, though.

  • Leigh

Looks like a bridesmaid dress to me.

    • Erica

Yep, you nailed it. In fact, I think I saw this dress about 15 years ago when a friend made a bunch of us cry with laughter showing us all the horrible bridesmaids dresses she had had to wear for all of those “good friends” of hers.

  • charlotte

I’m not overly fond of her dress, but I’m glad that the recent posts have featured people I’ve actually heard of.

  • HVM

Those are a pair of putty shoes that I can get behind.

  • Jaeda Laurez

It looks…eh, with the wrinkly nude satin, the apropos-of-nothing black belt, and the lace that ends at the widest point of the dress. It’s not awful-awful, but it’s not good.

    • Targettaste

I’m with you on the belt. A belt is good, but not THAT belt.

    • Jackie4g

I don’t mind the dress, but I agree on that belt; it is just jarring. If showing the detail of the cut away lace was the idea, then the belt should have been the nude satin, or another mid-range color as an accent (olive green, tobacco), but that black is heavy and wrong. Yes, I’m blaming the black belt!

    • littlemac8

I don’t think it’s a belt, exactly. It looks more like a tie, egads!! Please no bow in the back on adult women!!

  • Jessica Freeman

It’s the flesh colored satin that ruins the entire dress, or lace, I should say.

  • Addicted2Glamour

The puckering on the hem alone is enough to match my left eye twitch. Add to it that it’s putty-coloured satin under red lace and my head just explodes.

  • I am happy that an actual fabric was used instead of illusion netting. But the color is wrong.
I am happy that she is not in bear trap shoes. But the color is wrong.
I am happy that she broke out the Movie Star jewels. But the lack of balance is making me twitchy.
Her face and hair are gorgeous. I love her and want her to be my friend. I wish all of this had been done better.

    • demidaemon

      Agree. Agree. Agree. Agree.

  • Fanny_Trollope

Agreed. But I am totally on board with boatloads of diamonds.

  • i like the shape and the red lace.
switch out that atrocious satin with a nicer, less shiny fabric, and we have something.
give her a more vibrant hair colour, more tasteful jewellery, and a belt that doesnt look like its part of her hiking equipment, and we have a homerun.

  • Beardslee

The bands of satin don’t bother me as much as they bother others. I think they add a bit of clean tailoring to yet another lace dress.
Those are some cruel shoes. Look how her poor feet are canted forward. They’re pretty – but they’re cruel.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Whoa. I didn’t notice her feet until you mentioned it, but you’re right. That looks truly painful.

    • Katie Wolf

Thank you! These heels are too high, right? Short ladies of the world, embrace your height! There can’t be anything sexy about a slow-motion compound fracture. I know there isn’t, because that’s the gif looping in my head as I look at this. Horror.

Edited to add: really cute toes, though!

  • eowyn_of_rohan

The bits of frumpy red lace hanging over the black band is making me twitchy.

  • SylviaFowler

She desperately needs a different stylist.

  • Nancer

I am of the school of thought that you can NEVER have too many diamonds….!

  • fringebenefit

Her face is luminous and I love the color of her hair. The dress is ugly, but I think she’s working it.

  • LuisaNL

that is one ugly dress. and what’s the point of wearing a decadent-Liz-Taylor-like amount of diamonds if the whole world knows you have to return them at the end of the evening? at we know Liz’s owned all of hers!

  • MilaXX

That is an ugly and somehow cheap looking dress.

  • wonderdivaEtsy

She looks so pretty, I wish the dress didn’t detract from that.

  • Introspective

yes. what they all said above about the fugliness of the dress fighting with the loveliness of her face and those diamonds i want to steal…

  • Had to comment again, sorry. I have a question for those in the know.

Now it seems to me, that D&G should have known they had two similar level stars, somewhat similar in features, at the same festival, both wearing a red, lacy, dress and nude shoes. I know it’s just luck they both are rocking the low messy bun, but isn’t this a bit of a faux pas? Put a side by side up of Jen and Julia, and you could play Who Wore It Less Awfully?

    • demidaemon

Maybe. But maybe their stylists came in and pulled these dresses as options along with other dresses and, therefore, the final choice was still up in the air. Unless this event was sponsored by D & G. Maybe then its just “any publicity is good publicity.” I don’t know. Maybe this was a big miss on everyone’s parts.

  • vitaminC

A matte gray or navy blue underlay and a couple of tweaks to the silhouette would have made this a kick dress.

  • 3boysful

The dress IS fugly. It reminds me of a Christmas apron over a “good” dress, and mom Jennifer is telling the kiddos to wash up while she’s fixing to pull the ham out of the oven.

    • Sarah

      Xmas apron! Yes.

  • nannypoo

I like the shape of the dress and the idea isn’t bad, but the fabric is awful. The amount of diamonds doesn’t seem like a big deal to me. In CelebrityLand these are small diamonds and if she wore just one bracelet it would look skimpy, so to put several together to create some impact is the right way to go. The rings were a step too far. They look cheap, as does the dress.

  • Danielle

Her feet look like they’re in a lot of pain.

  • CatherineRhodes

Did she and Julia go dress and shoe shopping together?

  • marlie

The dress looks cheap to me. Her hair and makeup are pretty, and I might like the shoes with a different dress, but this dress just seems SO cheap that I can’t focus on anything else. Oh – the diamonds. Too many, and they don’t really “go” anyway.

  • Erica_Vuitton

That black ribbon wanna be belt thing looks awful! If I had attended this festival I would’ve been arrested for rushing the red carpet to tuck in those little red lace bits. They fill me with rage and I can’t explain why. Second thought, better off ripping the belt away entirely. At first she’d be scared but once she saw the before and after she’d be thankful.

  • msdamselfly

I think she looks lovely. Her makeup is flawless

  • RedRaven617

In my mind I hear her saying (under her breath) to Ben “I can’t wait to get out of these [email protected] shoes later.”

  • Little_Olive

What a bad way to frump up something as already questionable as red lace. The chest part makes me want to cry.

  • SewingSiren

This dress would look better if the lace on the skirt extended all the way to the bottom or may just 1/4 beyond the satin edge.

  • Kate

please steam the dress next time, Jen.

  • alyce1213

This is a really fugly bar mitzvah mom dress on a pretty woman with great legs and diamonds. D&G failure.

  • JP

Maybe if the nude satin were black?

  • elemspbee

like the shoes a lot. very pretty shape. i also like her jewelry. Dress fit sucks.

  • I think she has a diamond bracelet for each of her kids. A gift from hubby perhaps? Not that I am defending it, I get what you mean, but, well…

  • Maybe she’s dressing up a plain dress with the diamonds. I’m wondering what she’s doing with her hair. It’s long hair acting like short hair? I’m thinking that she’s faking it, but I short haircut would be a nice look and a nice change.

  • mrspotts66

hate the dress. i “ugh”ed at the thumbnail.

love the diamonds. but i like sparkles.

  • Imasewsure

I was nice to Julia but I can’t with this dress… UGLY UGLY UGLY. Beautiful face though and don’t hate the shoes (don’t love them either though)

  • jilly_d

Oh, I hate this so much. That dress is an abomination. But I cannot fault the girl for wearing every single diamond they let her out of the vault with. WHO AMONG THE BK’s BLAMES HER??

  • Jacqueline Wessel

She looks lovely but I agree with what you say about the dress…still, I don’t hate it. Disagree about the diamonds though…more I say. 🙂

  • Lilak

Not all that fond of the dress, but if someone with a narrower waist were wearing it, the skirt (and so the overall shape) would be improved.

  • SugarSnap108

I do not understand this flesh-and-blood-colored dress. It’s so wrong.

  • Constant Reader

This looks like a Modcloth dress a girl might wear to work on a Friday when she is meeting a cute guy for drinks afterward. By which I mean, it’s cute, but D&G? On the red carpet? No.

  • Terri Terri

She is adorable, but nobody can save that ugly dress.

  • Getoverit

Would be better without the satin part on top and strapless instead?

  • kimmeister

Whoa, in the thumbnail shot, she is giving serious Paula Patton face.

  • Janet B

    Not a pretty dress.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

She looks lovely in spite of that godawful dress. And that many diamonds on one arm is a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it. Attagirl, Jen!

  • Prom.

  • E. D.

That dress is no good for anyone. Red/black/flesh pink?? WTF.

  • mhleta

I’m willing to give this to her. She looks very pretty and, God bless her, lady like. The diamonds do seem like a bad idea, though. I’d think they’d snag like mad. Also, I feel that for a movie star, layering on a bunch of insignificant jewelry is fine for gadding about during the day but for evening wear should be left to us civilians. It’s not really worthy of her style requirements.

  • Awful, head to toe.

  • Fannie Wolston

Everything’s been said, but where’s Ben? She probably left him at home, again!

  • Laurie Landry

But it’s the best she’s looked on a RC in ages!

  • LaSylphide

She looks great and I actually kind of like the dress despite disliking beige and red and lace. For some reason, it just comes together for her. (BTW, is there such a thing as an ‘obnoxious number of diamonds’?)

  • formerlyAnon

The diamonds are to console herself for wearing the most awkwardly unattractive dress outside a church basement tag sale. From the table where some rich parishioners donated their unworn designer ‘mistakes’ and the contents of the closet of their recently deceased wealthy aunt.

  • Trickytrisha

Jen is somewhat like Zooey Deschanel’s older sister. She’s usually “adorable” without the “dorky” bit, but this dress isn’t dorky, it’s schizophrenic. Does she use a stylist? One who can be fired? If so, there’s hope! Anyhoo, she’s lovely.

  • Michelle Wilson

Dress is a mess but damn she has gorgeous feet!

  • demidaemon

HURK was my first response to these images. It’s just a big ol’ NO.

  • Kimberlini

The dress is horrible but the shoes look like a torture chamber.

  • SRQkitten

I’m ready for illusion netting to go the way of exposed zippers. Quickly.

  • quiltrx

I need the lace to be a different color…maybe taupe or something? But then I suspect it would still look weird. At least she took a risk.

  • kathrineb

More red less beige and it might be cute
