Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhané Wallis on the Set of Annie

Posted on September 26, 2013

So… is there any possible way this isn’t going to be adorable?

Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhané Wallis on the set of the “Annie” remake in New York City.

The answer is probably “No.” The cast looks like great fun, the film’s got a ton of big names behind it, and so long as they don’t screw around too much with the songs, it sounds like a winner to us. She looks ridiculously cute here.

I am irrationally excited for this!!!

    • KateShouldBeWorking

      It’s totally rational!

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I was never much of an Annie, fan. But for this, I Am In!

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I still can sing ALL the songs from Annie. Jamie Foxx is playing Daddy Warbucks? I’m so in.

    • Kate Andrews

They’re changing his name to something Benjamin (as in the benjamins!) — which makes me sorta sad. But it will still be cute.

      • Kate Andrews

        Ok, it’s Benjamin Stacks.

        • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

That works, since they appear to be updating it. I can see how Warbucks might be a little dated.

        • Kent Roby

          stacks of Benjamins, cute!

  • TAGinMO

What’s happening with his lapels? Is this a thing that people are doing now?

    • Kate Andrews

Maybe he’s supposed to be chilly?

    • carpediva

Maybe it’s a wardrobe thing to keep shirt and tie cleaner? Cuz if not? No.

  • mjude

i think i have seen the broadway show at least 3 times. i still get choked up over sandy. i hope they do it justice.

  • RussellH88

I want so much for Quvenzhane.

    • Lucía Gavello

Her parade of poodle purses is still my favourite fashion moment of this red carpet season.

  • Latin Buddy

    LOVE!!!!!!!!!

    • Lucía Gavello

Willow may have dropped out but Will and Jada are still producers along with Jay Z, still, I’m excited to see the outcome.

    • ana170

Is that what happened? I thought she’d been attached to star at one point. I do wish Jamie Foxx had dropped out too. Ever since he won the Oscar he’s rubbed me the wrong way.

      • Sobaika

Yup, she told her parents that she didn’t want to do it and they offered it to Quvenzhane.

        • demidaemon

It’s sad that that’s what it took. Not the whole “oh yeah, maybe your daughter isn’t meant to be an actress so let’s offer it to the academy award nominee!” Yeah, I may be a might peeved at the way they spoil their children, but that’s my issue to deal with.

  • paginatrix

The other day I was trying to explain to my Very Literally Minded Husband how Denzel Washington would be a waaay better Batman than Ben Affleck.
This version of “Annie” will make his head explode.
    Can’t wait.

    • MilaXX

YES! Ben already killed one superhero. I just don’t think Batman is in his wheelhouse.

      • ana170

Oh for goodness sake! Ben only acted in that movie (and did the best he could with what he had). He wasn’t the director or writer. He didn’t kill anything.

        • Sant31

Didn’t Ben and academy award for Directing and Screenplay? Not seeing a Best Actor award in there. Look at all the movies he’s acted in. He literally does roles that are similar to who he is. He doesn’t really have a acting range.

      • Alloy Jane

I don’t think acting is in his wheelhouse. He’s best behind the camera. And no, I don’t hate him.

        • quiltrx

I DO despise the very sight of him, and your comment makes me happy. :)

    • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com/ skadi1

I am suddenly angry, now, that Denzel has never been Batman.

  • rage_on_the_page

She definitely has the hair! Can’t wait :)

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I love her, I love him.

  • Nan

You really think they won’t mess with the songs? I bet they will.

    • kimmeister

With Will Smith and Jay Z as producers? It’s practically guaranteed they will.

      • Kate Andrews

It’s a Hard Knock Life for us! (one of my favorite Jay-Z songs)

      • MK03

We can look forward to a lot more “ha-ha, yeah”s during Tomorrow…

        • kimmeister

Or the Random Rap Interlude, which inexplicably shows up in 87% of pop songs these days.

    • MilaXX

I’m one of the few that liked The Wiz enough to overlook the fact that Diana Ross was too old to play Dorothy. I LOVED that as a kid and still know all the songs.

      • mjude

i loved the wiz too :)

      • ana170

The songs from the Wiz were great. I couldn’t get past Diana though. They blew it by not sticking with Stephanie Mills. I skipped homecoming to watch her perform it live. So much better!

        • MilaXX

I saw Stephanie onstage. I agree she was much better than Diana.

          • Kent Roby

I saw Stephanie as well, which made it hard to take Diana in the role.

      • Sarah

The Wiz was the shiz. Even if the wheelie-monkey things did give me nightmares.

    • fursa_saida

I HOPE they will. I love musicals, but Annie’s score isn’t one I’m particularly attached to, and I’d be interested to see them reworked.

  • TaurusKW

Someone tell that man to turn his lapels down.

  • MilaXX

I forget she was only 6 when she made her first movie. She’s getting big! I want this to be great so bad. It has a great cast so I have high hopes.

    • MissDelaware

I know! Those long legs! Be still my maternal heart …

  • Janet B

    Absolutely adorable.

  • Jessica Freeman

This better be good with that cast.

    • shirab

Anyone know who is playing Miss Hannigan or Rooster?

Jamie Foxx reminds me, we did Annie in my high school in 1987, and Daddy Warbucks was played by a tall, adult-looking (for high school) African-American guy with a killer voice. He shaved his head for the part, which was above and beyond the call of duty, and he looked aMAZing.

      • somebody blonde

Miss Hannigan is Cameron Diaz, which actually seems like a perfect role for her. The rest of the cast is listed in the link.

        • shirab

          She sings?

          • Alloy Jane

Have you seen My Best Friend’s Wedding? Because the answer is a resounding NO, lol. You should youtube Cameron Diaz Karaoke since that’s all her. I hope they let her Lucy all over it, that would be hilarious.

  • regina arthur

    She’s adorable!

    • nannypoo

      So’s he!

  • Michelle Wilson

Agreed. I’m really looking forward to it.

  • carnush

I had those hightops! So cute.

  • MK03

Does the world need yet another version of Annie? I posit that, no, it does not.

    • somebody blonde

Yes, it does. The old movie sucks. If this movie doesn’t, it will have justified itself.

      • MK03

I’m sorry, but anything that has Carol Burnett, Ann Reinking, Albert Finney, Bernadette Peters AND Tim Curry empirically cannot “suck.”

        • somebody blonde

Have you seen it? Because I can emphatically tell you that it does. And honestly, it’s not the cast’s fault. It’s the fault of whoever wanted to mess so much with the screenplay and the songs.

          • shirab

Exactly! What was the name of that turbaned fellow they invented? Horrible and unnecessary! My niece loves the movie and wants me to watch it with her, and I just can’t see it again because of all the pointless changes. They rounded up that fabulous cast and then didn’t let them do justice to the original show. Grrr.

          • Coleen

The turbaned fellow they invented is actually Punjab, who appeared in the comic strip in 1935. So, not really invented at all.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

That’s right, Punjab, and The Asp.

So long as they renamed Daddy Warbucks, I wouldn’t mind those two getting more normal names.

          • MK03

“That turbaned fellow” is named Punjab and he’s from the original comic strip.

          • shirab

Interesting. In that case, perhaps fans of the actual comic strip who saw the original musical were annoyed that he was left out.

          • MK03

Seriously? I’m a child of the 80s/90s. It was required viewing at every slumber party in elementary school.

        • Bexxx

I think the world DOES need another version of Annie because this cast is ALSO spectacular. And important.

          • Bexxx

GOOD LORD and I just realized Adebisi from Oz is in it too!!! It doesn’t get any better than that!

        • Montavilla

You’d think…. and yet it did.

        • RussellH88

This is a fact. It’s one of those situations where even if it does suck, you’re not allowed to say so because of the sheet amount of awesome that’s in the cast.

    • fursa_saida

I don’t see why not, especially since this is probably going to be very different and is clearly being updated. I always like seeing different takes on the same basic story, so I’m much more interested than I would be if it were a straight remake.

  • verucaamish

Wow! Annie’s costuming is RIGHT ON. The clothes look like the kind of hand-me-down clothes many children in foster care have to deal with without being a pile of patched up flour sacks. WELL DONE!

  • meowing

She’s a stunning young lady, who I expect will become a stunning woman. Hope she (and her Mom) can keep herself grounded. She was amazing in Beasts.

  • carpediva

“Maybe far awayyyyyy… or maybe real near byyyyyy….”

Oh my god, that song just wrecked me as a kid. Thankfully I’m an adult now.

    *looks around for co-workers*
    *cries*

  • JimMcC

Yes, she’s the cutest. Yes, he’s a beautiful man. But I swear to God, if they screw up Annie, I will be LIVID! I haven’t gotten over the first movie version yet!

    • Montavilla

Look at this way: This one can’t help but be better. (Did you ever see the TV version? That was pretty good, I thought. It was the first time I ever saw Audra McDonald, and that alone made it worth watching.)

  • nannypoo

Remember her puppy purses on the red carpet? I can’t wait to see what she comes up with this year. She is such a bright, hopeful little person, I just love everything about her.

  • FashionShowAtLunch

Emma Thompson was involved in the screenplay, according to the link. Sold. That lady is pure magic.

    • PastryGoddess

      agreed. Emma Thompson is great

  • formerlyAnon

Annie is FAR from one of my favored musicals, yet I am looking forward to this. It seems like a remake that has a *point* – I hope they do mess with some of the songs, as long as they keep the uptempo feel of the show.

    • fursa_saida

I couldn’t agree with you more. Meanwhile, I am constantly holding my breath because I’m terrified they’re gonna screw up Into The Woods, which is possibly my favorite musical of all time. (I’m heartened by some of the cast, but STILL.)

  • BrooklynBomber

She’s adorable. Why is his collar turned up?

  • stubbornthoughts

She’s gotten so big! That face is still adorable, I think she’s a great fit for Annie.

  • ashtangajunkie

She’s so crazy cute. He’s fine too, but she is too cute for words.

  • mmebam

I didn’t know this was a thing. Tell me more!

  • MauveSF

    Take my money now!

  • julnyes

She is so cute and talented. I generally hate remakes, but I will give this a chance since I like her so much.

    • Bexxx

My understanding is that it’s not a remake of the movie, but rather of the musical, if that makes any difference.

  • jelenawoehr

BUT WHERE IS SANDY??? The kid obviously loves dogs, her purses are all dogs! She better have a dog. I don’t care WHAT they do to the songs as long as they don’t write out the dog!

She’s killing me with the adorable, though. Man, I hope they do some sort of promotion to encourage people to consider adopting older children with the movie, this could really do some good for the kids who get overlooked as “too old to adjust to a new home.”

  • Darren Nesbitt

Are these the actual costumes? Is this a 2013 rendition of Annie? How do you guys feel about that?

    • fursa_saida

I assumed so–they’re changing Daddy Warbucks’ name (Benjamin Stacks), so it doesn’t seem they’re being super faithful. Personally, I am PUMPED about it. A lot of the themes are very topical now; why not rework it to address their current forms?

  • mhleta

About damn time. And while they’re at it I’d love to see an authentic remake of West Side Story too. I really have a hard time feeling any sense of suspense from a a bunch of spray tanned white boys whistling, snapping their fingers and doing pas de bourrees in Members Only jackets and pompadours.

  • Danielle

Now THIS remake? I can TOTALLY get behind.

    • Kent Roby

This just in: Carrie Underwood will be playing Mrs. Hannigan…..LOL

      • fursa_saida

        Nope, it’s Cameron Diaz.

        • Kent Roby

Oh , yeah, just joking about the horror of CU playing Maria in Sound of Music.

          • fursa_saida

            DERP. Sorry, carry on.

  • Kent Roby

I’m still haunted by her performance in Beasts of the Southern Wild; I’m thrilled yet nervous about Annie, hoping that she is as awesome as I expect her to be. She is ridiculously cute here, and he looks perfectly dapper (I assume the lapel flip just occurred between takes).

  • Sonja Brisson

More fashion here than 20,000 Miley Cyrus pics. More, please.

  • bellafigura1

    She is edible.

  • up with pod people

    STOKED

  • Missing Agloe (DFTBA)

I just adore Ms. Wallis. I hope someday I can have a daughter who is as smart, poised, fun, talented, and beautiful as she is.

  • marlie

Not gonna lie, I can’t wait to see this.

  • bxbourgie

I’ve heard they changed the name and the songs.. like it’s gonna be Annie but not really Annie if you know what I mean. Which is fine with me because quite frankly I wish Hollywood would leave the classics from my childhood and teen years alone. And yes, they both look adorable.

  • sweet_potato

    Adorable!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

When they start doing the red carpet poledance for this, the reporters better not give her stupid nicknames because they cannot pronounce her name. Use “Miss Wallis” if they can’t handle it. Nothing wrong with being polite like that.

I can see Cameron D as Miss Hannigan, but can she sing?

    • fursa_saida

      I hear she can’t. Maybe she’ll do a lot of…speak-singing?

  • ItsDicey

Not an Annie fan at all, but she looks all kinds of crazy cute.

  • http://jlandl.blogspot.com Jenny Creed

I’ll watch the shit out of this, just because I have a suspicion this is Hollywood’s Hail Mary to prove a movie needs to be about a straight white non-singing man to be successful.
