IN or OUT: Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Andrew Gn at the A.C.O.D. Los Angeles Premiere

Posted on September 27, 2013

We are, as our drag sisters are prone to saying, LIVING for this color combo on her:

Mary Elizabeth Winstead attends the premiere of “A.C.O.D.” at the Landmark Theater in Los Angeles, California in an Andrew Gn ensemble paired with Jimmy Choo pumps and a Kotur clutch.

Andrew Gn Spring 2013 Collection/Models: Julia Ponomareva (WOMEN)/Liu Xu (MARILYN)

But proportionally speaking, that top is a tough piece to wear. And both pieces are much tighter on her than they were on the runway models, which gives the look an entirely different feel. But that skirt is CRAZY CUTE, no? We are conflicted. You are hereby charged to alleviate this situation through the power of opinion.

If we ever decide to become life gurus, we’ll stage these massive traveling feel-good, positive-thinking seminars called “The Power of Opinion.” You’re all invited for free. Everyone else will have to pay ENORMOUS fees, because that makes it more fabulous.

Vote Now!

IN! Loving the shapes and colors. That skirt is bring joy into my life.

OUT! Allow me to introduce Miss Chartreuse, Administrative Assistant to the King of the Mushroom People.

Little Miss Kiernan Shipka’s off-the-beaten path Emmys dress was voted IN by the Bitter Kittens, while Zooey Deschanel’s Vegas Bridesmaid Emmys dress got the ol’ O to the UT.

  • Diego!

IN, but a belt would have enhanced this look a lot!

    • kirkyo

      My thoughts, exactly.

    • Meelah

I thought the belt was too much.

  • PlethoraofBooks

In, though I’d have preferred a different color combo.

    • lrober03

I liked the blue shirt on the runway…and it would have matched the blue of the Ciroc symbol!

  • Julie Chase

  • kaycem

this is a WERQ to my eyes! it’s hard to get this color combo to even work together, much less sing — and i like that it’s snug on her, so she gets snaps up from this bitter kitten.

    ETA: IN, obviously lol.

  • hughman

Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Missing Size 6 Skirt

  • tonibaloney

    LOVE IT. IN!

  • kategs

In. I agree it should have been a bit looser but I am so happy to see colors/cuts like this out there! Brava.

  • vahtel

I think the proportions are a little weird, but MEW can do NO WRONG in my book. I’ve had an irrational crush on her since seeing her in SMASHED. She can wear what she wants, as far as I’m concerned.

  • elemspbee

IN. albeit with fit issues but she kept interesting smart looking clothing interesting and smart as she donned them. I too am loving the color combo. Very fall. More power to her!

  • Lola Channing

agree too tight but I expect she’s keen on showing off that crazy tiny waist. Otherwise: in. Loved his collection. Love it on her. She is totally rocking those truly difficult shades of slime.

  • Kathy_Marlow

IN, I think she looks smashing. If that skirt finds it is in need of a home, I’ll adopt it.

  • MzzPants

OUT. Poor fit is never a win.

  • Emily Smith

As a ginger I just had a visceral negative reaction to these colors because I would look ten shades of ill in them. She looks good though, in!

    • alyce1213

Same here. Jaundice, malaria, hyperemesis gravidarum, and a host of others.

    • SugarSnap108

Me, too! Instant liver failure. But yes, they work on her — though I prefer the blue the model is wearing with this skirt.

      • Emily Smith

I was thinking the blue top with the other skirt…what color is that…kind of a maroon or…burnt red..or…something…would be a color combination I’d be open to.

  • MoHub

Love the colors. Those are my colors. Skirt is too tight around the hips, though.

  • sagecreek

I think IN. For one thing, she’s taking some chances without resorting to the bare midriff or nipple flash, and the cut is interesting.

  • Lovely head, lovely skirt, unlovely top. I just can’t with the mustard mushroom. OUT.

    • formerlyAnon

I’d be o.k. with the mushroom if it were the focal point of the ensemble. But to me it competes with the skirt for attention and loses. And the skirt makes it look kind of gimmicky, which I don’t think it would with a simpler skirt or (better yet) a pair of breezy trousers. [Yes, I know “breezy” is an unhelpfully non-descriptive adjective, but if fashion writers can do it, so can I.]

    • MRC210

Yes. And the cape-y style which I loathe. OUT despite the beautiful skirt.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In! It’s different and striking, and the colors work well together and with her coloring.

  • jen

In! Love the colors and that shawl top. And fantastic choice of shoes! Not a black or nude pump in sight, it’s a miracle!

    • ankali

Best avatar ever. You’re really falling down on the job with the swearing, though. 🙂

      • jen

Ha, ha, thanks! I have to fight the urge to comment in Al’s voice sometimes. 😉

  • hmariec19

IN and I’ll take everything here wrapped up to go, including the shoes, kthx.

  • IN! It’s different and fun and not like anything else we’ve seen for quite a while. In, I say, IN.

  • SophieCollier

IN. But I actually think this color combo makes her skin look icky. I know it’s mostly the flash lighting’s fault, but still, ick. But it is a hella cute ensemble and I bet it natural lighting, she looks much healthier.

  • sagecreek

Also, OT, but I feel like an idiot…am I the only one who had to google A.C.O.D.?

    *slinks off*

    • Jacqueline Wessel

No, I didn’t know what it was either…but I’m going with IN here.

      • sagecreek

Oh, me, too! That wasn’t an “out”, that was an OT, as in “off-topic”.

  • TerryMH

You know, there’s a breed of women out there who love to wear their clothes skin tight no matter how hard you try to convince them that its more flattering otherwise. I know a few and its hopeless. I fear that this gal may be one of them. She took that skirt from sublime to a place right next door to tacky. Love the top though.

    • marlie

They’re related to those women who refuse to wear something if the size in the label is anything different than what they’re accustomed to wearing, despite the fact that sizes vary from designer to designer, and even from season to season for the same designer.

    • sweetestsith

I actually wonder if they might be the runway pieces, and she’s a skosh bigger than the models?

Skirt is a bit tight, and I like the blue better, but she still looks amazing and makes this weird combo an IN.

  • Nancer

Cute clothing, but the fit is off. I have to go with OUT, unfortunately. Also, the color of the top doesn’t really work with the skirt. Though they are fabulous pieces. I think that this is a tailoring issue, too; the skirt is too tight, and also too long on her.

  • MaggieMae

OUT. The skirt is cute, but it’s pulling. I have never, ever liked that chartreuse color, and you cannot convince me otherwise! The shape of the blouse? An interesting idea, but in reality, I don’t find it all that flattering. Vomit color or not.

  • ThesisMonkey

IN! love it, she looks great!

  • Darva Sutra

In! The parts are all great, but the way she’s put them together is GENIUS!

  • Suse

IN ~ love the colors. I also really like the skirt with the blue top as shown on the model.

  • LJCdoc

In, because that skirt is just too fabulous.

  • Mary Featherstone

In.. just wish the skirt was a half size bigger!

  • Danielle

IN, because she’s such a cutie.

  • Feathers McGraw

that color combo is not working. I liked both runway color combinations better than what she is wearing. It’s turning the chartreuse drab.

  • marlie

I love this look, and the colors are amazing. But the skirt is too tight and it’s making my eye twitch. It’s an in (with reservations).

  • Dave Fellner

In (but then I am biased because of Scott Pilgrim, it’s hard to ever see anything wrong with what she wears)

  • random_poster

IN, but I prefer the blue blouse worn by the model matched to the skirt.

  • GillianHolroyd

IN. It’s not tight, it’s sleek. Love all three color combos.

  • GTrain

  • Rhonda Shore

OUT, awful color palette and both items are too busy; the top with a weird cut or skirt that screams crafts project with doo-dads stuck all over the place.

  • PeggyOC

Out. I disagree with you on the color combo. Vehemently. And I don’t think that color brown on the skirt belongs anywhere on a woman of her coloring.

  • 1tsplove

IN, she gets 100000 points for being daring. Taking risks that may not pay off 100% (but come pretty darn close) always outweighs playing it safe in my book!

  • Bernadette

  • Missy

IN. The skirt is a skosh tight, but it hardly ruins the look for me. I *do* love the color combo. Seems like close-but-tonally-different pieces (i.e. Lady Mary’s Emmy look) are picking up steam as a trend, no? If this is the case, I approve.

  • Imasewsure

It’s a weird top and a difficult combo but I say IN. I love that skirt and appreciate that it was something different

  • carlaaxtman

I want that skirt. NOW. Seriously . Where can I buy it and how much of my stock portfolio must I sell to seal the purchase?

  • Jaeda Laurez

I LOVE that skirt, and I even like the top. I just don’t like them together. Even on the model. Nice try though- it’s an interesting choice when most starlets default to a cocktail dress and some shoes with nothing to recommend them other than the price tag.

  • Little_Olive

I hate the color of the skirt, but the yellow on top redeems it a bit and she looks great anyway.
Tight yes, but props for wearing something a bit different.

ETA: the clutch needs to go.

  • Erica_Vuitton

IN! She’s got the right height and proportions to keep the top from being an unflattering fit cape and that skirt is gorgeous!! The bronze metallic shoes are perfect too.

  • Shawn EH

Too tight, ruins it, don’t mind the 50s living room styling, but the whole point of 50s is effortlessly stylish. OUT.

  • lobsterlen

  • alyce1213

OUT, but not very. I prefer the runway color combination. And too tight.

  • Synnae

IN- great colour combo (better than on the models) and because she actually has some curves she fills the skirt and top out nicely, giving it a gorgeous silhouette. Shoes are great too (red carpet peeps- take note, metallics are your friend). Only down point- that clutch, just ditch it and get some cute guy to carry your lipstick for you 😉

  • Stella Zawistowski

I adore the skirt so much. IN.

  • susan6

OUT. Olive AND chartreuse? Both of those colors are difficult. They can look striking when paired with certain colors (like the olive paired with the blue, and the chartreuse paired with bronze). But put them together and it’s….moldy. I like the overall design of the pieces, but that color combination is a fail.

  • Belvane

IN. Love the colors and how the skirt color draws your attention to her warm brown eyes.

  • Lauren Dorsee Dillon

IN. That’s a tough color to wear but she pulls it off. I would have picked the exact opposite, blue blouse and rust skirt and fitting somewhere in between loose and tight. But this isn’t about me, is it? It never is. Wail. 😉

  • ojosazules

    Out. Just out.

  • melanie0866

IN, but she needed some Spanx to make the skirt work better. I do love that skirt. And the colors. while weird, really work with her coloring.

  • az67

  • IN. So proud of Jessica Bennett the First.

  • pookiesmom

  • Sweetvegan

In! The shoes are the wrong color, but in! Both pieces are gorgeous!

  • LaSylphide

In; love the colors. My only problem is the decoration on the top; it just conflicts with the skirt decoration, which is why it looks out of proportion. But it’s great to see unusual colors and styles, especially when they are this successful.

  • Maya

in! i love this. wish i could afford to wear it1

  • altalinda

Out. Go up a skirt size, please. And I hate pointy shoes.

  • Monabel

Out. “Orrible top, skirt too tight.

  • jen_vasm

Hey, I like it but am voting OUT because “Allow me to introduce Miss Chartreuse, Administrative Assistant to the King of the Mushroom People” is so very awesome. She should be a character on ‘Adventure Time’.

  • JauntyJohn

  • mjude

  • Constant Reader

IN, although I wish there were just a little wiggle room in the skirt.

  • Fanny_Trollope

I probably could have dealt with either the mustard-colored top or the poop-colored skirt, but together they are overwhelming me. I say out.

  • MannahattaMamma

LOVE the color combo conceptually (hey, 3 Cs: do I get extra points for alliteration?) and LOVE the skirt. But the cut of the shirt is painful – like the top half of a strait jacket. So I’m saying IN…with reservation.

  • barbarienne

My first reaction was that the top was doing something weird to her proportions. Shortening her torso while lengthening her neck. The skirt is beautiful, but again, with the position of the waist and length of the skirt, she has long legs but stumpy torso. Wow, it’s really strange when “long legs and neck” isn’t a compliment. Which proves that overall proportion is important, not just individual body parts.

Makeup is fine, hair is a little phoned in but you can do that when it’s so glossy and healthy. Why no jewelry? Earrings or something?

But I still give her an IN. I can understand what’s bugging me, but she still looks good, the ensemble is creative, and lots of people would be afraid to try that color combo (or would fail at it somehow).

  • MilaXX

IN! The look is a skoosh tight, but cute enough to overlook it.

  • Kimberlini

Crazy cute? That sounds like something Heidi would say.

NO to the split pea puke fest.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Ooooo. Both pieces are really cute, but the fit is problematic. It’s straddling the threshold for me.

  • Silly Grrl

    I say IN. It’s so perfect and fall-like. <3

  • frannyprof

IN. Feels very fall to me, which i like.

  • msdamselfly

    Love the runway looks

  • homofascist

  • crash1212

OUT. Hate those colors. Hate them together. Too tight. Blech.

  • MissFern

    love it!

  • julnyes

IN – an interesting color combo and I think she looks fantastic (though one size up on the skirt probably wouldn’t be a bad thing)

  • rh33

In! Every wardrobe should include some chartreuse.

  • Inês Martins

In! Love the colors and she looks cute!

  • AmeliaEve

Out. White girls should not attempt that shade of yellow-green. Combined with the fit fail the overall effect fails.

    • Contralto

They’re not all the same shade, you know.

  • formerlyAnon

The skirt IS bringing joy to my life (love it) but it’s a tad tight and the woman who’d choose that top seems strangely unrelated to the far more fascinating and sophisticated woman who’d wear the skirt. In my head, that is. She’s obviously being both of those women and it is not working for me. OUT.

  • jesuiskate

IN! She looks fresh and cute.

  • mmebam

“That skirt is bring [sic] joy into my life.” #In

  • Linda LaPaz

    In. Really different and pretty.

  • largishbearishAtlish

love love the bottom half, but the top half (including the robotic looking makeup/smile) look like a rework of Blade Runner..
she looks futuristic, plastic and…boring. Out.

  • lalahartma

  • Slanted & Enchanted

IN! I love the top, but that color would look awful on me. This is a vicarious IN, for sure.

  • MissusBee

IN. Although anyone who can wear those colors and not look ill is just showing off (you know Dianna Agron is cursing her).

Am glad she went a silver way rather than a gold way with the shoes. That was smart.

A belt and room to breathe would have added a cherry, but the cake is still good.

  • IN. Though that in no way insinuates WERQ status. I like it. I like a lot of it. But I don’t love it and the tightness in the belly area is bothering me. As you said, it messes with the proportions.

  • conniemd

IN. i do like the colors on her. The design of the blouse is a bit odd, I’ve notice a lot of circus tent type tops this season.

  • Jangle57

I do like the colors on her, but my first thought was: ‘the skirt is too tight’, followed by, ‘the proportions are wrong’, then, ‘I hate the shoes.’ All in all, while I like the outfit, I don’t like it on her. OUT

  • SorayaS

IN! There is nothing I don’t like about this look (and normally I hate mustard-coloured anything). I think the fit looks fantastic on her.

  • Contralto

I’m giving her a tentative IN because, even though I hate the top, everything else is fine. LOVE that skirt.

  • Trickytrisha

IN for the her (or her stylist’s) savvy in deciding to go with it! Love the unusual colors, she looks pretty darned spiffy all around.

  • RoxieRider

In. I love every single thing about this. Quibbles, sure, but the look is a breath of fresh air.

  • IraKi

IN! I love this lok on her! everything about it. it is a bit tight though, I’ll give you that

  • Datura

The colours read “Brady Bunch” to me, but she looks very pretty.

  • Sara Hottman

The skirt is a skosh tight but she looks fantastic. IN.

  • Trisha26

IN. Barely. I would prefer the hemline beading to be the waistline. Love the top.

  • VicD

Out. Split pea green (or, barf from The Exorcist) and baby-shit brown. The color combos on the models worked, but this is vile.

  • lesmaha

  • raeb23

In…love the skirt, tho i wish it wasn’t so tight

  • ChrisP

  • Constant Cat

I’m gonna disagree on the shirt color with her skin. I like the look, but to me, it would look better on a woman of color. Still, it’s quite classy. The chartreuse secretary would be a way rad Oz addition. In by vote of supreme weird tied into administrative hell made light and uh…and yeah, the outfit is ca-yuuute!

  • carolie_king

love those colors and the skirt gives me life. IN.

  • carpediva

I let out an involuntary if sympathetic “yikes” on the scrolldown so I’m gonna hafta go OUT.

  • anyalama

IN! I love it, it is so different yet tasteful.

  • ankali

Yeah, OUT, though I can’t really articulate why. I appreciate where she’s going with it, but I don’t like those lines in that color combo. Maybe if she’d worn a belt?

  • yesknopemaybe

    Too tight. But still IN.

  • demidaemon

I actually kind of love this look. IN!

  • IN! I love this.

  • Meg

Out. I like the colors, and both pieces, but not together.

  • macwell

I think she should have gone with the shiny skirt…

  • Reality TV Casting

    in love the tighter look

  • RuthGo

OUT. Skirt is waaaaaaay too tight and, while I agree that the colors work together, I don’t think the styles do.

  • Notasaltine

The color is perfection on her, and the skirt is amazing. The top is a bit of a risk, but she’s pulling it off, and it elevates the skirt.

  • Meelah

I like them together as far as design but would have preferred different colors.

  • MandyM

IN but not a huge fan of the little cape top. The chartreuse is OK but the blue and bronze combo on the model was prettier.

  • I can understand your conflict; I feel it myself. As she is doing a good job selling the look, I’m going to have to give it a very tepid “IN”, but I’m not a fan of her hairdo, the style of the top, or the pointy shoes (although I do love the bronze-y color of the shoes).

  • thecitysleeps

In. Love the combo, and I love the shoes.

  • Love it, but I liked the pale blue that the model wore with that skirt better. Still, I think she looks fab.

  • bethlael

  • disqus_jGD1fOw6HQ

OUT!!! All I can see is split pea soup!!! (the blue top would have been SO much better)

  • LostDancer

I want these penis tops to not become a trend, but I’m having a bad feeling they will.

  • tereliz

IN! I like the blue better, though. I think the little arm cape is kind of retro-modern classy dame.

  • Erin Cullen

  • Cathy S

I love it. I just wish it wasn’t so tight. But In nonetheless!

  • IN. i always vote yes on chartreuse.

  • CheriCPat

Out. Love both pieces as shown on the runway, HATE them together.

  • TheLaurenJean
