IN or OUT: Emmy Rossum in J. Mendel

Posted on September 17, 2013

We’re throwing this one out to the Bitter Kittens because if we have to critique this one, we’re gonna be total GIFs about it.

Emmy Rossum attends “Charity Water” in New York City in a J. Mendel blush three ply silk racer-front crewneck top and champagne abstract dotted jacquard flared skirt.

J. Mendel Pre-Fall 2014 Collection/Model: Bette Franke

i.e., We’ll wind up repeating ourselves ad nauseam. How many times can two queens be expected to bemoan the fear of color in our celebrities?

On the other hand, she does look pretty. But that may have more to do with her natural prettiness than the outfit. As you can see, we’re undecided. Kittens make the call:

Vote Now!

IN! Who needs color when you look that good?

OUT! She looks like a Band-Aid.

The Minions avec Opinions were sympathetic to Drew Barrymore and her frumpiness, but ultimately voted the look OUT.

    • kimmeister

OUT. She doesn’t look terrible, but nor does she look great. Would it have killed her to throw a bold necklace on top of that blah (but three-ply) top?

    • Random Compliments

IN. She looks beautiful (but she should really wear more color).

    • schadenfreudelicious

She makes a very pretty band-aid, plus she left off the model’s support hose, so she gets an IN

    • Constant Reader

OUT. She is lovely, which is helping the look a lot. But it’s boring and her hair is covering the only interesting thing about the top.

    • MilaXX

OUT! She looks like a Band-Aid.

      • Random Compliments

        aww crap. can’t unsee.

    • Lily

Out. Her face and hair are gorgeous, but that’s her fantastic genetics. The top and skirt are hideously boring and wash her out.

    • annabelle archer

      Out. Zzzzzzzzzzz.

    • Julie Chase

In. I’m bored by the color but the dress is lovely and her hair/makeup are really nice.

    • muzan-e

IN. I appreciate the idea of a delicate bit of nothing allowing her very pretty face to be the look’s focus.

But I’m awarding this to her makeup artists, without whom she would fade right into the backdrop.

    • foodycatAlicia

We haven’t In or Out’d in AGES! This is a half-hearted in, because she looks pretty and had the sense not to wear the socks & heels combo, but it’s not her best self.

    • Pennymac

      Band-fricken-aid. Blah.

    • teensmom99

IN. Her coloring is vivid enough that she can get away with the non-color. Well deployed lipstick helps.

    • SophieCollier

I’m going to blame the flash of the cameras for her washed-out look, because this is just such a pretty dress and she does look really good.

    • steeg of their own

IN, but it could be better. If she wore that exact same top in an orangey coral with that skirt, it would look amazing.

      • kmk05

You know, this is going to sound a bit strange but that combo is now really popular in underwear! I haven’t really seen it in real clothes yet (we’re approaching winter so it’s unlikely anyways) but it’s been around the whole summer in lingerie shops.

        • foodycatAlicia

It’s really pretty in lingerie – somehow it has a sort of early 20thC French prostitute vibe. In a good way.

          • kmk05

It does! I was all ready to scoff at how ridiculous it would look but it really does look sexy and yet classy, especially with the little bows and stuff.

    • M_E_S

I’m going to IN, since generally she’s not afraid of color and I just love her so much I can’t out her.

    • KC

Out. She does look pretty but she always looks pretty. They try to make her look nasty and dirty on “Shameless” but her prettiness always shines through, so I figure she’ll look good no matter what. The top shouldn’t be so long, I like the look on the model more because you can see the skirt (and it creates a more interesting silhouette) and the top of the shirt, which has a nice shape. She should’ve pulled her hair back!!!

    • majorbedhead

      It’s boring. Out.

    • Rachael

out! the outfit is boring, she looks naked and there is WAY too much matching going on!

    • Lori

Out. Thanks to her fabulous genetics she doesn’t look bad, but the outfit is boring and desperately needed some color to avoid turning her into a walking Band-Aid. I do appreciate the fact that she didn’t wear the stupid socks. Not enough for this to be an In, but I am sincerely thankful.

    • J-Ko

….cause they hold on tight in the bathtub and they cling in soapy suds…

    • Let it out

In, because I like giving celebrities credit for not f-ing it up *or* for taking risks. Jennifer Aniston’s rarely evolving style is just fine with me. Maybe I’m getting old and conservative. I do love a bold print tho’.

    • lulukittie

IN for me. With her coloring, hair and makeup, the soft buff looks just right on her. I’m a gal who loves color, but I think she looks lovely.

    • Synnae

OUT. Girl is gorgeous and I actually don’t mind the lack of colour as white obviously works for her.

But the top is not fitting correctly and she is hiding its most interest feature- the shoulder. Also the skirt is too long on her and by wearing it with the top over it just makes her look dowdy. The shoes are boring & matching.

But happy she decided to at least forgo the model’s socks I guess?

    • Denise Plank

    • demidaemon

That skirt looks great in profile, but all these front on shots do it a disservice. If you can’t properly pose to show off the best part of the outfit, you are doing something wrong. Also, I hate the shoes. OUT.

    • Judih1

      band -aid indeeed – out

    • Louise Bryan

    • Adriana_Paula

Not sure why she lengthened the top. Out for me, but not a vehement one.

    • formerlyAnon

    • Ashley Ellen Wilson

    • Ronni H.

The shoes are horrendous. She looks okay in the outfit though, but I feel like it needs something. If she wanted to lack in the color department she could have at least put jewelry with it, or better yet, add some color to it with jewelry!
It’s an out for me. Not the best I’ve seen, but not the worst either.

    • Joyce VG

OUT. She does indeed look like a very pretty band-aid.

    • Jenna Marie

Out. For the proportions of the top. Ick. Though I think she wears enough color in her regular wardrobe to forgive her for the bandaid look this time.

    • aeb1986

In! I think she always looks gorgeous and classy

    • GillianHolroyd

Out because the hair is pissing me off. Nice makeup tho’.

    • LaSylphide

In because she doesn’t look washed out, despite the bland, non-color. Actually, I think the whole outfit is quite pretty, but it wouldn’t work on somebody who doesn’t have her coloring.

    • ballerinawithagun

      In. Venue appropriate.

    • Tom Markiewicz

OUT. she ruined the chicness of the look by untucking the top and hiding the neckline with her hair. now she looks like a kidnergarten teacher that’s washed her favourite top/skirt combo so many times it’s bleached it of all interest.

      • conniemd

agree. Out for the hair hiding the only interesting design element of an otherwise dull dress.

      • Jacqueline Wessel

I was just going to say the same thing about how much better this looks with the top tucked in, and I hardly noticed the detailing because her hair is in the way. So – out. But, yes she is lovely.

    • Anya&Paul

IN. Emmy wears plenty of color. Give her a break! Besides, she looks good.

    • Kate4queen

      Out too bland

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

      Out. Bandaid. ‘Nuff said.

    • carolie_king

She makes old bra color pretty. IN.

    • Trickytrisha

Big IN for me, because she looks great – and because charity: water is such a smart, much needed non-profit dedicated to providing clean water for third world peoples. She could lose the shoes though.

    • E. D.

OUT – skirt is too long and those shoes are terrible.

    • PastryGoddess

      Band Aids are not ok

    • Jacquelyn

OUT. She needs color. Her face looks good and so does her hair but she needs something somewhere to detract from the all cream/white.

    • Pterodactyl111

Out, just barely. If there was a color other than beige she would be in.

    • elemspbee

      OUT. washed out, dull.

    • Janet B

      Boring OUT

    • jason

      out. Blah with ugly shoes.

    • jw_ny

    • Monabel

      Insipid, intensely insipid. Out.

    • kim bunchalastnames

wonder why she wore the top over the skirt, instead of tucking it in? it … kind of clashes with the swoopy swirl of the hem that way. still, she looks pretty good, and her figure is SICK. i’d have to go with IN.

    • SewingSiren

It would be great in a bright color or even bright white. Still in though. Perfect hair and make up.

    • SugarSnap108

OUT. At first glance, I thought the skirt was see-through. Plus, she’s a solid wall of flesh-tone.

    • livesarah

Wish-washy. She usually does so much better. Out.

    • CommentsByKatie

I think the lack of color is what is bringing out her gorgeousness in this look. Her eyes and hair look so striking against the paleness of her outfit. I’m a brown hair brown eye gal and this is making want to go out and buy pale mauve everything!

    • lizajane1776

      Out. Band Aid.
And stand up straight, young lady!

    • Lilak

Her hair is pictured three different ways here: Hated the dress in the first pic, with her hair behind her ears … but definitely warmed to it once her ears were covered. Strange!

    • largishbearishAtlish

Out, I keep squinting to see if I can see lady parts or unmentionables thinking that is a see thru skirt (or the waiter spilled something on her…or….

    • quiltrx

IN…mostly because I adore her and she looks so pretty, but I also like the fabric of the skirt.

    • AnneElliot

I give her an IN, but I love her irrationally.

    • Kristin McNamara

Out. You’re right. She does look like a bandaid.
PS- What does being “total GIFs” mean? I tried to google it, but obviously the regular definition of gif came up all over the place and I couldn’t find any alternate definition…

    • Maya

out. what is up with those shoes?!

    • Erica_Vuitton

OUT bandaid is spot on. That make up does not go with the outfit but thank the Lord she ditched the ankle socks. Do NOT want to see that becoming a trend.

    • gabbilevy

In. We wouldnt be complaining about the lack of color if she wasnt a piece of a large mosaic of neutral celebrity appearances. She looks fresh, lovely and properly serious for a charity event.

    • Alloy Jane

Good grief this is a boring look. The make-up is not that offensive but the hair is very boring and the dress is less than boring. She doesn’t look like a band-aid, band-aids are much more interesting than this.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Wan, pale, ashen, anemic, washed-out, sad, pasty, beeeeiiiiiiige. O-U-T.

    • ankali

OUT, despite her very pretty hair and makeup. Such a pedestrian outfit. She could usually do better than this in her sleep, but I suppose we all have to make mistakes now and then.

    • RedRaven617

In. The color (or lack of) suck, but her dark hair and good makeup save the day.

    • another_laura

Out. Can’t think of anything better than that she looks like a Band-Aid. This “color” on a Caucasian brunette? criminal.

    • msdamselfly

      an in

    • Imasewsure

IN but not a rousing IN. She looks pretty but bland but it’s an even for “charity water?” so I guess it makes sense.

    • MinAgain

Great shape for her, but that blush color looks awful. It’s like someone repurposed an Ace bandage.

    • sleah_in_norcal

she’s so pretty and i love her but blah. lowercase out.

    • Bridget Smith

Out: I think she can pull off this delicate pink, even if it’s a little dull, but I’m cranky about the proportions. The longer top (combined with the flared, below-the-knee skirt) makes this downright dowdy. I’m about her age, and if I tried this on as-is, my reaction would be, “Nope. Nope nope NOPE.” If it were the same as the model, I might have been persuaded.

    • VioletFem

OUT. One’s ENTIRE outfit should not (nearly) match one’s skin tone. It’s a good silhouette for her, but looks very boring. if even one of the articles of clothing had some color, it would have really elevated this outfit. Hair and make up are pretty but not enough to save this look.

    • unbornfawn

      Boring, but IN.

    • Alexis Peñafuerte Wenceslao

      IN! She looks gorgeous.

    • kmk05

IN! I don’t know anyone (in recent memory) who has rocked the colourless sheath look so well. There’s some detail to the skirt, her lips and hair provide a nice contrast, and the shoes seem like a concerted ‘nude’ effort instead of an afterthought.

    • DamH

IN. Though it looks like she put an additional top on which is not necessary makes the poportion bit off and I still hate those nude shoes, she looks extremely lovely. It kinda works here.

    • Ros

OUT! That skirt is just fugly. Mother of the bride in cut, length, colour and style. Ugh. The top does nothing for her, either. The only positive thing about the look is that she didn’t copy the pop socks from the runway styling.

    • Claudia

    • decormaven

Out. I’m not stuck on Band-Aids.

    • PeggyOC

in. Small letter in. It’s a serviceable look, appropriate for the event and she’s neat and well turned out. Is she setting the fashion world on fire? No. But this is work for her, and sometimes you just have to put something decent on and put in your hours.

    • carnush

She should have worn the top tucked in. OUT.

    • Elizabeth Phillips

The makeup is pretty. The outfit has a flattering shape. The shoes I love. The hair is pitiful – NO ONE looks their best with their hair parted smack down the middle and just lying there. And why would someone who can wear color beautifully run around in beige and white?

    • MoHub

A colorful pendant on a thin gold chain would improve this immensely. Also glad she didn’t wear the model’s socks and shoes.

    • Laura Renee

OUT. Too pale for her. But I like her hair and face.

    • MartyBellerMask

Boring. Yet it seems appropriate for the venue? In. Just because the alternative is Out and she’s not that.

    • AlisonS

OUT. She looks like a floating head. While that head is very pretty, it doesn’t make up for the entire skintone south of the neck.

    • Chuck Barthelme

In, but she needed better shoes.

    • Lily-Rygh

OUT. Lace band-aids are hard to pull off for anybody.

    • mjude

    • Ruth Preston

There are a frillion people this wouldn’t work for (and I’m over the hair, and the shoes frighten me), but I really do think it’s lovely on her.

    • crash1212

OUT. And if she had to wear this admittedly pretty colorless look, she could’ve at least kept the top tucked in. It ruins the proportions out.

    • Jessica O’Connell

IN. It’s not terribly interesting but she doesn’t look bad either and I can’t give her an out just because the outfit is a little bland.

    • broke&fashionable

Mostly IN. Top is boring, though well fitted. Like the skirt.

    • jspark

      It’s a charity event. IN

    • marlie

It’s an “out” from me. Too monochromatic, and it looks like something that I might have worn in 1998.

    • lesmaha

      Bandaid. Out.

    • Jangle57

While it’s not super flattering and the color is drab, it’s not enough to throw her under the bus for – IN

    • merciblahblah

I think her head looks bee-you-teee-ful, but I hate what she is wearing with the firey passion of 10,000 burning suns.

    • Violentcello

She’s pretty enough to not look awful in a boring dress, but it’s still a boring dress.

    • barbarienne

She’s wearing this dress about as well as one can, but it’s a pretty terrible dress.

Keeping with the “grade on the celeb’s personal curve” principle, I have to call this OUT. She can (and usually does) do better than this.

    • CatherineRhodes

    • CeeQ

OUT because boring. Even if she does look pretty.

    • Tracy_Flick

So close. That raggedy hair is driving me nuts, and the shoes are awful. However, the shape is beautiful on her and I don’t mind the light color. I guess I would give her a B-/C+, which is an OUT.

    • Cathy S

In. I think she looks great. I wish it had more color though. But still an In.

    • MissFern

    • Aurumgirl

Don’t fall back on the “but she does look pretty”. Think how much prettier she’d look in a red or deep violet or dark forest green version of this dress. That blah colour just detracts from her beauty.

    • HobbitGirl

OUT. If she weren’t naturally pretty, I wouldn’t have looked twice. Something tells me that “blending into the background” is not what she’s paid to do at these things.

      • Anplica Fiore

Exactly so! Out for me as well.

    • Adela Zhang

OUT. Color’s fine but her torso looks weirdly elongated compared to the model. Did they just cut the hem straight off?

    • jen

Haha, she looks like a Band-Aid. I’ll give her an IN.

    • Deborah Lipp

She looks like a stunningly pretty Band-Aid.

    • Sara Hottman

Oooh, once you draw the Band-Aid comparison there’s no going back. Out.

    • allisankelly

out. why even bother to get dressed if you are going to look basically naked afterwards?

    • frannyprof

      *Yawn* Um…. out?

    • jif

Beige outfit is beige, but seems event-appropriate. In.

    • GTrain

    • Cousin_Rose

      Out with the putty dress!

    • sagecreek

      OUT. completely blah.

    • lilazander

OUT. This ensamble screems for a pop of colour–shoes!

    • tereliz

Great in real life, horridly wan in photos. Gonna have to say out. But a little out.

    • Erin

She’s gorgeous, and she should live in jewel tones and red. OUT.

    • julnyes

She is very pretty and is elevating this blah look a bit, but I still call this an OUT.

    • kolokOlchik

I like the outfit, it’s really pretty – individual pieces. But the color (or lack thereof) is totally wrong for her. I am firmly in the in-between category – neither in nor out

    • MandyM

Tardy to the party but I give it an IN. It’s plain but pretty.

    • Fuchaforever

OUT!!!! (and why couldn’t she even tuck the top in??) Looks SO uninspired! She even looks bored with it!
