IN or OUT: Drew Barrymore in Marc Jacobs at the Estée Lauder Modern Muse Party

Posted on September 13, 2013

We honestly don’t quite know what to make of this:

Drew Barrymore attends the Estée Lauder “Modern Muse” Fragrance Launch Party at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City in a Marc Jacobs dress paired with a Chanel jacket and Marc Jacobs platform sandals and bag.

The dress is pretty, but the jacket looks too mature for her and the shoes and bag don’t seem to go with anything.

Hunh. How about that. Turns out, we do know what to make of it. But we still want to know what you make of it, kittens.

Vote Now!

IN! Perfectly ladylike.

OUT! Where is the Drew who took her top off on Letterman? Oh, time. You’re a bitch.

Poor Holland Roden has been waiting for far too long to hear what the Bitter Kittens thought of her hostess pants. Not much, it seems. Y’all voted them OUT.

I love the jacket just not with this dress. The collars are wrong together. The shoes are blergh and I think she was trying to match them to that purse-thing that needs to go back to the 80’s. Seperatly, these 2 things can work for her just not together.

    • hughman

Are you chilly Miss Muffet? Here, put on Grandma’s jacket and that should help. I see you’ve already smashed the crap out of the spider with your purse.

    • RoxieRider

If the jacket were leather I would really love this look. As it is, it’s just ok–not bad enough to be out. And *she* looks very pretty. So lower-case in.

    • ellabob

I like all of it – just not together… her makeup is beautifully done…

      • Constant Reader

        My thoughts exactly!

      • random_poster

Agreed. For me that makes it an Out, even though I love Drew.

      • Florence Whytingale

Heartbreakingly awful! Her face though… her face is spectacular. There are approximately 3 people in the universe that can rock that lip shade.

        • Getoverit

Love the lipstick. Hate everything else. Is she a smoker? Her teeth are kinda yellow.

        • littlemac8

Hate the lipstick! Isn’t it funny. I think it looks garish and is the first and last thing you notice.

    • schadenfreudelicious

Chanel ladies who lunch jacket with an eyelet schmatta? Out!

      • makeityourself

Yes, I believe we’re looking at a wool boucle’ and leather jacket with an eyelet dress and a snakeskin purse/shoe combo. Doesn’t work for Drew; doesn’t work for anyone.

      • Neva Reese

Your icon the picture on my favorite blank book (because it looks a lot like me). Kudos!

      • fursa_saida

Since your icon’s already been brought up–Yoshitomo Nara is one of my favorite artists. It’s awesome to see his work around!

        • schadenfreudelicious

Love Nara’s work, little Pyromaniac always makes me smile :)

          • fursa_saida

Pretty much everything of his makes me smile. My parents once bought me a t-shirt with some of his art on it and I treasure it to this day.

    • nannypoo

This looks like something Kate would design for the modern Southern woman.

      • MilaXX

        I was thinking Jeremy

    • LaSylphide

Out, but I’m sad about it. Individual elements are OK to good, but just don’t seem to be working together for her. Plus, that lipstick is taking all the attention from her pretty face.

      • clatie

was just going to post a comment about the lipstick – agreed!

      • Heather

Yes, I loathe the orange lipstick.

    • Pennymac

Sigh. Its Drew. Much like RDJ or our “Elderly Gay Windchime”, in my eyes she can do no wrong. Except for those shoes. THEY are wrong. But not Drew.
      So, wimpy fangurl IN.

    • annabelle archer

IN. But she’s not quite found the right mixture of Earthy, edgy and Mommy.

    • Melanie Suzanne

Mmm, no. I love the individual pieces but the combination equals “hot mess”. Actually, no, it’s a cold mess. Either way: OUT.

    • GSMSF

Preggers and trying not to throw up.

      • annabelle archer

Confirmed or speculation? Because I wondered, but then I hated myself for it.

        • RedRaven617

I have heard the same speculation. It would not surprise me.

        • GSMSF

          Complete speculation.

      • MGMcD

Agree. She’s very glowy and the smiles seem both forced and genuine at the same time, which really does read “I’m actually quite happy but I could ralph at any second.”

        • Donna Tabor

Or, “I’m actually quite happy, but I REALLY need to run and pee!”

      • Coolekat

That was my first thought. The last photo is the proof.

    • fringebenefit

IN…with a luminous smile like that, how could she be out? Agree with TLo, though, about all of the above. You know, whenever I gain weight, I wear odd things that I think camouflage the bulges…let this be a lesson. Oddity is not the answer.

    • Meredith

IN because it looks like the kind of fun when you’re a kid raiding your mom’s/auntie’s/grandma’s clost (and makeup drawer). In that “innocent” fun way. Why not?

    • Random Compliments

    • Bailey Debruynkops

      boring mismatched & out

    • Cate

Out, unfortunately. The jacket and brooch are way too matronly and the fabric of the dress looks cheap. And the snakeskin makes no sense. But at least she looks happy!

    • Musicologie

At a glance, I thought it was Christina Hendricks…with all her red carpet issues resurfacing.

    • formerlyAnon

Out. Her head is gorgeous grown up Drew, but the dress and jacket together are a whimsical young woman pairing she can no longer work. (And definitely not with her gorgeous grown up hair and makeup). Like the jacket though, and the shoes.

    • MilaXX

OUT! Where is the Drew who took her top off on Letterman? Oh, time. You’re a bitch.

      • annabelle archer

I hate that Drew posts are always a harsh reminder of the passage of time. I’ve always been hyper aware of her and her career, as we are the same age. She was the only thing in E.T. that I liked as a kid.

    • Janet B

Not all of these at once, please.

    • ceceliadid

I wonder about ladystars who are no longer hot young things – I imagine they have fewer designers begging them to wear their clothes, and must find it hard to keep up to the standards of a Collins or a Rossum when they attend the same events. This isn’t chic, but she looks like a nice, happy mom who put some effort in. I give her an IN because that’s enough for me, and I like her shoes, even if they don’t go.

    • elemspbee

Oh no. This is so OUT.

That dress is waaaaaay too big on her. Hmmm.

    • Vivi N

This is an obvious OUT. Actually, O U T. More emphasis.

I want the jacket. The dress is cute. Both should not be worn together. At all. The bag and the shoes are trying to match but they don’t and both are a meh. I am on #TeamBrooches so I’m happy to see one adorned on the jacket.

      O U T.

      • Constant Reader

I want that brooch. And the jacket.

    • Jenna Marie

      Out. Hot mess.

    • crash1212

OUT. I love Miss Drew and her smile lights up the world, but that fab Chanel does not go with that cute eyelet dress and the shoes and bag don’t go with anything. But the extended pinky in photo one makes it art.

    • kimmeister

OUT, because none of these items go together except for the shoes and bag, which are overkill when paired anyway.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

      OUT! Old lady looks!

    • anneland

IN. I don’t think the jacket is old. Very Drew.

    • Dagney

Well, it is a bit wacky and weird….she has combined a vintage-y flow-y dress with Chanel (huh?) and then threw in some Studio 54 accessories and shoes for good measure. I would be willing to bet she put this together herself. The more I look at it the more I like it. So, officially, IN. Drew has been around the Hollywood machine her entire life, so I can see her getting dressed and saying, “Oh I am gonna wear THIS outfit just to fuck with people AND because it’s totally me.”

    • BrooklynBomber

She just looks like a regular person — only better because she’s Drew Barrymore. IN.

    • mommyca

what’s up with the ladies and these clunky shoes? I’d say OUT, because the jacket makes her shapeless. The makeup looks pretty though.

    • Eric Stott

Nice pieces, dowdy combination. Hair and makeup are nice though.

    • teensmom99

Out. Too young actually to wear this dress with the dowdy jacket. My teen dresses this way.

    • zelavie

I’ve gotta give her an OUT. I really like the dress and the shoes, maybe even together (with the right jacket perhaps). The purse is a no and the jacket is really ugly to me. Overall, it just looks awkward.

    • Shawn EH

Sweet, she looks pretty, IN! Chanel jackets are by definition ageless! Anyone should have one if they want. Maybe the lipstick and shoes are sort of off.

    • Terri Terri

The dress looks like something Lena Dunham would wear on Girls. The jacket and especially the brooch is giving me the Joan Rivers collection on QVC. I’m so confused.

    • kirkyo

Just barely in mostly because she’s selling it in convincing manner.

    • Ronni H.

Ship the jacket to Helen Mirren.
I’d say this is an out; it had potential though, and from the neck up it’s pretty much perfect

    • Laura F.

Needs more waist definition. Otherwise, OK. I’ll give it an in, but not IN.

    • Neva Reese

She is mah la-ty. (In. I would wear this to the office in skippity-skip.)

    • Cautiously Pessimistic

Out. Looks like something I’d have worn to a very conservative wedding in the 90s.

    • Trisha26

OUT. I hate eyelet. It looks like 3 looks 1) shoes & bag 2) jacket 3) dress – and the hem is so ragged, it looks as though this was a long dress cut shorter and not hemmed.

    • amber.

“Ms. Barrymore, can I go to the bathroom?” “I don’t know, CAN you?” “Ms. Barrymore, may I please go to the bathroom?”

She looks like a school teacher. Out. Bye.

    • Alloy Jane

This is a soft “in” for me. She’s so cheerful and I really love the dress. The shoes should never be worn as shoes again and should spend the rest of their lives in the utility drawer in case you run out of hammers or bug swats.

I may be the only one, but this makes me think of a modern day Betty Draper. You know, like if Betty Draper lives to see 2013. Girly dress, just slightly clownish make-up, a gramma jacket from her glory days, and terrible accessories because when you hit your 80s, not all your marbles make it, including those that determine when shoes should be given up for dead.

    • Trickytrisha

Definitely out from neck down. She’s glowing (literally) otherwise. Several attendees at this event were sporting that shoe/bag combo in various shades. Didn’t like any of them.

    • Slanted & Enchanted

Out. Nothing is working together. Although I like the shoes and bag on their own.

    • macwell

Its a cute dress, but it seems wrong for her and ages her incredibly.

    • sagecreek

Oh, dear…did she go thru a time warp?

Out. I honestly wouldn’t have recognized her without the caption.

    • Pterodactyl111

      Out. Boring and shapeless.

    • Kelly

Yikes, out! She looks like a little girl who got cold at a party, and her grandmother said, “here, dear, put on Grandma’s nice cardigan.”

    • ReadBarbara

Looks like she’s playing 80s version of Taylor Holland in a Taylor Holland’s biopic.

    • altalinda

    • luluransom

In, but only ’cause it’s Drew. She’s almost wackadoo enough to make it work. But I sure do hate the wee bag trend.

    • JauntyJohn

Drew’s personality will always transform whatever she is wearing into a “Drew outfit” which works, even when it doesn’t, which is contradictory, but that’s Drew.

Also: Friend-of-a-friend works for her. A genuine sweetheart in person – genuine in all senses of the term.

    • demidaemon

Well, the hair and makeup scares me. So there’s that. I feel if she had left of that grandpa cardigan, I would be a bit more forgiving of everything else. But she didn’t. So, OUT.

    • conniemd

Out. The cardigan makes it look frumpy. It’s a white eyelet dress, you can’t wear a plain buttonless cardigan/jacket with white eyelet, a pastel cardigan with pearl buttons, maybe, but the combination makes my eyelids twitch

    • calimon

OUT. Too many frumpy layers, leaving her looking very thick and unshapely in the chest, waist, and hips, and quite age-ed overall.

    • EveEve

OUT. That is one of the ugliest combinations of garments and accessories I’ve seen on the red carpet in recent memory. At least on an actress who apparently was attempting to look chic and pulled together. I hope to God it’s because she’s pregnant and not really giving a rat’s ass what she wears right now.

    • amanda siegelson

holy crikey… its an outfit her grandmother would wear – when she was a child. horrible! take it away!

    • carolie_king

Jacket is OLD LADY. Whitish shimmery eyeshadow is giving me a headache. I like the shoes. Out.

    • Coolekat

Is she pregnant? Otherwise she borrowed this from one of the ladies from my church.

    • valerie saenz

Oh my goodness, Miss Julie Andrews! You look so lovely and refreshed. It’s really a treat to see you looking so well Ms. Andrews.

    • jw_ny

      OUT! no question about it.

    • unbornfawn

      OUT. She looks matronly.

    • jjtxgrrl

In. Because this is kinda her thing. And she looks so happy.

    • Jangle57

I can’t find a single thing about this look I like. Maybe if the pieces were used differently but as is, OUT. And lose the lipstick while you’re at it.

    • E. D.

      Out. Nothing works together.

    • Une femme

      LOVE her makeup.

    • quiltrx

I can’t decide, was leaning toward nay but I just can’t do it to her.
And that closed-eye picture? So perfectly Drew!

    • Lauren Lynch Fox

In. She is in new Mommy mode. She is showered, made up, out, dressed and in Chanel no less. Nothing but love for her!

    • Ass Kicking Adviser

It’s fine. That’s the problem. It’s not really a red carpet look. It’s like she spent the day in the outfit doing her shopping and picking up her kid from school and when it was time to go to this shindig, she was tired and decided that swapping out her jeans jacket for a black Chanel would elevate the look enough that she could get away with it. She didn’t.

    • Jacquelyn

If she weren’t at a RC type event, maybe IN. This is more strolling through NYC knowing that the photographers are following you.
      Here it’s an OUT.

    •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Out. The jacket is mumsy and she could use a belt.

    • lilyvonschtupp

I think its cute. She may be still trying to work off baby fat. IN.

    • DeTrop

I hardly recognized her. Not liking this look at all.

God, I can’t wait for the return of the feminine shoe. These platform shoes are too clunky and unflattering.

    • Mazenderan

Out. Love the hair and makeup – but her outfit just doesn’t make any sense, It’s like she’s pulled a formal jacket on over a nightie.

    • tvmovielover

Sadly, it is an Out (I love Drew too). The dress is no good unless she is pregnant again-she is not little Gertie anymore. Her face however does look good as said below. I do not love the shoes but recently bought a similar pair because they were really comfortable while still giving height. What do they go with?

    • bellafigura1

Love huh, but OUT. She is the perennial hippie-kid kid, probably refuses stylist help. The dress is fine for knocking around but too frumpy, amplified by the terrible jacket. And yeah, the shoes and bag just don’t go. She looks like she’s camouflaging her weight, which is not at all necessary because she is luminous and lovely.

    • decormaven

Out. What a contradiction! A summery eyelet frock, paired with reptilian purse and shoe, and topped with Gramma’s jacket. Her makeup looks great- wonder how her line is doing at WalMart? I giggled to see she’s at Estee Lauder’s event.

    • altissima

Against that frumpy, dark jacket, the dress looks like a night gown. Drew looks as though she’s escaped from a mental health asylum.
“Nurse, she’s out of bed again!”

    • Contralto

Much as it pains me to say so (since I think she is completely adorable), OUT.

    • M. H. Leader

You know, I think she’s self-conscious about the fact that she hasn’t lost the baby weight instantly as so many Hollywood types need to do. IOW, she’s NORMAL HUMAN WOMAN, not a skinny-freak. I think the jacket is meant as camouflage for the thickish waist. Could have been a better choice. I can see a bronze metallic jacket with a little more style and tailoring as something that would have lifted the granny-dress nicely. Would have even made the shoes OK. And a lighter bag. Something. Anything.

Basically, though, I think as long as she looks presentable, I doubt she gives a flying fig about whether she’s the most stylish person in the room. And she IS adorable. Her personality shines even in less-than-wonderful outfits.

I’ve enjoyed listening to her on TCM’s Essentials on Saturday nights. She has a ton of expertise about movies and filmmaking. I hope she continues that gig.

    • TheLaurenJean

I actually love the combination! Gotta go with IN!

    • frannyprof

This getup simultaneously ages and infantilizes her. OUT. Great face, though.

      • Lilak

Just how I assessed this. Including the grrreat face!

We’ve been seeing some relaxed and happy faces lately, haven’t we? Drew, Claire, Dianna, Scarlett . . .
Always a pleasure to see women not all bound up with self-consciousness.

    • spooki C

Um… her lipstick is nice. Everything else needs to go, the jacket especially. It’s very grandmother’s church clothes.

    • kathrineb

She is glowing. So pretty. I’m not a fan of the dress but I do love a brooch when deployed well

    • another_laura

Out. None of this is working for me, from the dress to the jacket to the lip color to the shoes. And when you put it all together, wow, is it OUT.

    • kategs

Out. Not becoming in color or shape.

    • MannahattaMamma

I love those shoes and I’m going to assume that she, too, loves those shoes. Loves them so much that she was blinded by them, and didn’t realize what the hell else she was wearing. But even so – dang, that Drew grew up pretty, didn’t she? Shucks.

    • StarburstLady

I hate it all. All the pieces are salvageable (except maybe the lip color…) but the combination is pretty dreadful. OUT.

    • ballerinawithagun

Out! This old lady, vintage look is only meant for the young. Drew needs to start classing things up a bit. Not necessarily conservative, a bit edgy would be good, just not these frumpy looks.

    • Dawn Sinclair

Out, the 80’s called they want their outfit back

    • andreawey

      girl has a lipstick issue

    • GTrain

    • KTBSN

I’d like to see what the dress looks like. The jacket is a mismatch but her face is fabulous!

    • CatherineRhodes

OUT. Every piece of this is ugly and it looks dumb together. Is it her goal to look like a plump librarian?

    • NurseEllen

Sorry, Drew, I cannot get behind this mismatched mess. OUT. Go home and try again.

    • Austin Morris

She’s appearing in costume as the eldest Fanning sister.

    • Adrianna Grężak

Eh, this is how I dressed in college (cardigan over dress) so I automatically give it an out

    • Sara Brams-Miller

Out. She needs a cute leather or jacket or something to tone down the “grandma” feel.

    • Deborah Lipp

The overall impression is of Drew Barrymore’s head floating over someone else’s outfit. Which is not an impression anyone wants to create.

Out. If I’m not far too late.

    • halo323

FFS, does that girl ever age? How do we even know what’s age appropriate for her?!

    • mhleta

Out. Outfit, that’s not your jacket. Or shoes. Is she pregnant?

    • jen

Out. Girl, please get a stylist. You are too good for this.

    • lalahartma

      OMG! Out!

    • Bernadette

Cute dress and chic-as-sh*t jacket, but frumpy-ass together.

    • MarissaLG

OUT. I don’t like the black jacket and the shoes are heinous and it’s just not working for me. Sorry, Drew. Love you girl.

    • oohsparkley!

It’s a mash up of styles but not bad enough for an out. In from me.

    • tereliz

I like all these pieces. Just not as an outfit. OUT! Or back in… the closet.

    • lesmaha

      Out. So dowdy!

    • jmorino08

IN! It’s eyelet and it’s Drew playing Grandma-dress up! What’s not to love?

    • Anplica Fiore

IN – this somehow works for me. Even the snakeskin.

    • Jecca2244

the jacket would be super fun with jeans.

    • Jane

    • Fuchaforever

I totally understand her cuz we’re both Pisces…and sometimes we tend to lose focus…and the funny thing is we can sorta tell when it’s happening…BUT that’s why in case of emergency Drew, when you feel like it’s not coming together- just do what the pros do (like Madame Coco Chanel): LBD and pearls. That’s it. Easy. Don’t complicate things!

    • Fuchaforever

Hippie Drew trying to dress up in Chanel…hehe…it’s funny. She’s so cute.
