Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth at the 2013 Teen Vogue Young Hollywood Party

Posted on September 30, 2013

We kinda love this look because they both look like teenagers. Really chic, good-looking, wealthy teenagers in expensive clothes. In other words, bless their little hearts, they’re working that Romeo & Juliet drag to the hilt. Kudos to the stylist who’s keeping them on their toes.

Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth attend the 2013 Teen Vogue Young Hollywood Party in Los Angeles, California in Emporio Armani.

They look hot. It’s not worth rating the looks to us. Sure, they’re as meticulously styled as an Oscar gown, but the end result is a carefully cultivated casualness. It’s not worth putting a number to it. They look good. We do have to laugh at her Grunge Chic. Is this something the kids are going to do now? High-end versions of our college-years pot-smoking ensembles? We approve. It’s hilarious.

That’s some Angela Chase red carpet realness.

    • ConnieBV

This just makes me think about Romeo + Juliet. Ahhh, Leo.

      • Angela_the_Librarian

One of the best movie soundtracks ever produced! Des’ree’s “I’m Kissing You” still gives me goosebumps.

    • oatmealpie

      My so-called fashion.

      • Cz

Tying flannel shirts around your waist are a thing again?

  • DTLAFamilies

Goddamn will I be happy when cocker spaniel hair goes away. Get your hair out of our face, young lady! /oldster

  • Chuck Barthelme

Is it just me, or is he otherwise to manicured to really pull off the unshaven thing? It looks wrong on him. He’s too clean cut for that to work I think. Otherwise, they look good.

    • demidaemon

I don’t know. I kind of like it.

    • jen

Totally agree. He’s so much prettier clean shaven.

  • alyce1213

Did she unexpectedly get her period? (All ladies will understand.)

    • Ha. Good one.

    • I recently did the dance of “leave the office with no one seeing”. Really wished I had a trusty flannel with me…

    • NinaBoo

If she wore sleeves, she could have kept an extra one tucked away.

  • I thought I was pretty jaded to the whole pole dance/affectations thing, but not this time. This time it is making my eyes roll so hard in my head, I may have given myself a mini stroke.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I love the dress and I REALLY love the shoes. The shirt really just looks stupid.

  • lbl

    Those bangs suit her.

  • jilly_d

    “pot-smoking ensembles” lmfao.

  • teensmom99

Okay, teens can wear leather dresses. Love it!

    • Isabel

She should enjoy it while she can.

  • kimmeister

Smokey eye + bangs in eyes just don’t go together. Those are some pretty hot shoes though.

  • marlie

I love her dress and her shoes, but I just can’t with the plaid shirt tied around her waist. NO.

  • clatie

Sweet merciful god, that guy looks like a douchebag.

  • formerlyAnon

I’d say the high point of each ensemble are the shoes – especially hers. But this is probably because I am old, older than dirt old, because to me they look healthy, attractive, and well groomed and utterly without spark. They bore me to tears.

  • Anathema_Device

The shirt around the waist is just too affected for me. I know that’s the point of teen dressing, in many instances, but still. It looks silly. Otherwise, they both look good. LOVE her shoes.

  • Sobaika

I will come out and say it. I HATE her hair. Always have.

    • mlle

I want to take her to the salon for some deep conditioning and then a trim. Her ends look ragged.

  • MilaXX

This look I like. It’s styled to death but it works for me.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Then the clothes are perfect for what they’ve been doing, right? Because they high as hell!

  • Empire Records elegance.

  • Trisha26

I can just see a minion hand-fraying the bottom of that shirt.

  • Judy_S

I enjoyed Bill Cunningham’s report on newly/still chic grunge in Sunday’s NYT. I enjoy it more seeing this pair.

    • Julie Ree

I was just going to mention this, too. My 12 year old loved it, so they are hitting the right demographic here.

    • decormaven

Thanks for the refer. I love Bill C’s eye- he is one of the best trend spotters, ever.

      • cocohall

If you haven’t already, check out Bill Cunningham New York, a documentary about Bill C. The most unassuming man with the most magnificent eye. A true eccentric and original. This is the kind of movie that stays with you for days after you see it.

        • decormaven

It’s one of my faves! I loved his quote,”It’s as true today as it ever was. He who seeks beauty will find it.” He is such an inspiration.

  • Lattis

Love the trompe l’oeil effect of the “shirt.” thumbs up for injecting humor into fashion.

  • Qitkat

I druther see this than a giant foam finger.

  • bellafigura1

Yeah, just all young and hotted up, no clothes commentary required. They win.

  • Erica_Vuitton

This at least looks age appropriate but omg the shirt around the waist?? I can’t that is laughably hilarious. Cute shoes though girl.

  • VicD

And here are your new Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson for 2014…

  • Victoria Anzalone

  • mlle

It amuses me that she went and got the appropriate lip colour for 1994 to go with the flannel shirt.

  • Jacquelyn

Not a fan of her hair. He’s trying to hard to do the pouty-pretty look.

    I *love* her shoes

  • kirkyo

Oh god. I just had a flashback to my sophomore year of college that I really could have done without.

  • Danielle

I remember when the only reason you would dare to wear a flannel tied around your waist was when you were caught at school with out any feminine “supplies”.

  • Trickytrisha

Awww. They’re puppy cute. His left eyebrow drives me nuts though.

  • ThesisMonkey

kids from the rich school skipping class

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

    He’s just precious!

  • a_liking

I ADORE her flannel shirt around her slinky black dress. it’s ridiculous and fun and the perfect touch. A.DORE.

  • Lily-Rygh

God help me, but I would cut a bitch for those shoes!

  • calimon

For me, it’s not quite the win that TLo are giving it. Sure, it’s a look, and it’s not terrible, in fact, it’s commendably put together. But there are certainly some major flaws.

For one, as Chuck Barthelme points out, the boy is just a little too “clean cut” /boyish to pull off the whole unshaven rugged look. Although I’ll give him an ‘A for effort’. And, shouldn’t he still at least shave his neck? Even though several other BKs have pointed out that the ‘Cocker Spaniel hair’ is a bit too played out, I still want to argue that teenagers always seem to default to the displaying of their long tresses, because, I believe, it has something to do with some kind of princess/Little Mermaid ideals of beauty. Basically, its an maturity/immaturity thing, but will always remain a thing for teenagers, and, unfortunately, won’t be going away anytime soon. As for that flannel shirt tied around her waist…. well, goddamn if that is the most contrived accessory I’ve seen yet! It even appears that they have cut/torn the tail/bottom of the shirt, just so it would still reveal the hem of her dress.

I can’t help but repeat one of TLo’s recent The Heathers film quotes, “Fuck me gently with a chainsaw!”

  • mhleta

The addition of the flannel shirt was inspired. They both would have looked spoiled and fussy without it. The flannel brings kind of a downtown-after-hours vibe to both of them. They’re the sort of people that make you hate them and want to be them at the same time. Well done.

  • jmorino08

Ugh! No! No flannels tied around waists on the red carpet!!

  • anotherkate

She looks adorable. Those shoes are killa. Also, every time I notice how pretty she is I feel like a perv. I promise I’m not a perv, Hailee! I just want to be you/befriend you/mentor you? (It’s confusing).
