Eva Mendes at New York & Company Clothing Line Launch

Posted on September 19, 2013

Eva Mendes is very excited to be starting her job at Ewing Oil today.

Eva Mendes attends the launch of her new clothing line at New York & Company in New York City in a white draped bodysuit, black brocade pencil skirt and necklace from her New York and Company line.

She hopes that rogue J.R. can keep his hands to himself. She’s heard things.

This is not the image we have of Eva in our heads. We like to picture her in funky head scarves and kickass boots, walking down a NYC street with a Gosling on her arm. This sort of ’80s night-time soap opera realness feels a little jarring. But we can’t say it doesn’t work like gangbusters. We suppose she could have popped some color into this look, but she clearly wanted something stark and business-like for her image-sell here. We like the idea of using some big, obnoxious jewelry to bring it just a little out of office-wear and into the land of glamour and celebrity, but we don’t actually think that necklace goes at all. We can see her in some crazy-ass big ol’ thing around her neck, but not this one.

Other than that, it all works, although we have to admit, the hair and makeup are looking not-so-fresh.

She’s got the attitude to pull this off. As much as the idea seems strange, the reality looks very good. I’m not sold on the makeup, though.

      • kirkyo

Specifically, it’s the eye makeup that’s not doing it for me. I do like what she’s wearing.

        • gabbilevy

It’s definitely got that I put this on this morning — and it’s midnight! — feel to it, doesn’t it? Clean face and this could have been a winner.

        • kimmeister

It’s the middle of the day, right? That is not day makeup.

    • Sobaika

I really like what she’s attempting here, it just doesn’t feel very modern. Something about her posing and lack of smiling makes it seem like she’s trying to force the look instead of werq it.

I’d suggest black cocktail pants instead of the skirt, lose the belt, and freshen up the makeup.

      • marlie

“Not modern” is what I was trying to get at… And considering that this outfit is from HER NY&Co line, it’s really sad that it reads as so dated, and not in a cool, retro way.

        • demidaemon

Man, we all sound like PR judges here: “It’s so modern,” “It’s not modern.” I just wonder if that word has any meaning any more and what it means exactly.

Not that I don’t agree with what you are saying here. It’s just my dayjob/linguistic philosopher coming out.

          • marlie

I get what you’re saying… but this looks jut seems… dated. Like, there’s nothing “throwback” or “retro” about it. It looks like she’s wearing clothes that someone found in a closet that hasn’t been opened since 1986.

    • Introspective

feels 80s nighttime soap opera for reals, meets the special guest star hot latina hussy who is about to bring down the whole ewing empire single handedly with a bat of the eyes and shake of the hips.

hate the heavy eye make up and the sheer sleeves. her figure looks great yes. but all of it comes off kinda trite. im not impressed

    • Tanya Wade

Pam Ewing wants her wardrobe back!

    • kmk05

I think it’s the black skirt/white blouse combo that puts it square into stereotypical office territory. Even all the bling (necklace, belt) can’t change that.

Maybe a blouse/top with a more punchy colour (fushia, turqoise, coral?) would have lifted this up into more glam territory?

    • Donyelle

      Nolan Miller lite

    • NBG

The sheer sleeves on the blouse are dating the shit outta this one. It’s not terrible but it’s not her best look.

    • RussellH88

It looks like some of that oil got onto her eyes. Texas Tea, y’all.

    • CeeQ

That’s some major EYE going on there.

      • Erica_Vuitton

At first look it reminded me of that commercial of the mom handing her kids their lunches in full evening make-up. “What? It’s called a smokey eye.” aka just too much!

        • demidaemon

I love that commercial, although I couldn’t tell you what they were trying to sell with it.

    • teensmom99

      Spot on, gentlemen.

    • padma sallah

Especially the make-up. It looks very un-fresh. I like everything else though.

    • Courtenay P

To take a page from Nina, this looks inexpensive.

    • Garcia Loca

I actually liked that collection. There was a darling little shirtdress that looks very forgiving.

    • melanie0866

Did she have spinach in her teeth? Why doesn’t she smile?

    • decormaven

That necklace does not go with that outfit in any way, shape or form. This is a less than positive look for her.

      • kimmeister

I hate how it fights with the neckline of the blouse. They’re both perfectly fine pieces, just not together.

    • Diego!

OMG… she looks way older than she really is in this executive assistant ensemble! I hate it, sorry girl, I love you but this is not working at all!

    • Jacquelyn

She looks like she’s really upset at something.

    • alyce1213

My stomach just clenched when I thought about ’80s fashion being the new inspiration for future fashion seasons.
This isn’t awful, I don’t mind a business look, it’s just kind of stale.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

She wears the blouse and skirt and belt very well. Nice colors with her hair.

The necklace looks absurd. The look would be great without it.

    • Imasewsure

She has everything she needs to take this from Pam Ewing to Sophia Loren Board Meeting Chic,,, but it’s just Pam unfortunately

    • MilaXX

She;s been all over morning tv shilling this line. FRom what I’ve seen it has a few nice pieces.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Is she deliberately hiding the handbag from the photographers? That’s no way to shill a label.

    • Jumpingjacks

great, another celebrity that can pretend to be a fashion designer while probably lacking any necessary skillset.. (if the last part is not true, I’ll stand corrected)

She looks like she desperately needs to use the open bar… the clothing is rather generic

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

      She does Bitch very well.

    • tereliz

It’s like when Tyra graduated from business school and wore suits and glasses all the time. I think she looks great and I get that she’s here in a more “professional” capacity than her usual role as an actor, so I appreciate the more business-like look. This must be from the line, right?

      • demidaemon

Whenever I think about Tyra and business school, I have to force myself not to roll my eyes, even though I do love her particular brand of crazy.

    • hughman

The purse is for her pager, her Virginia Slims and extra Sweet N’ Low packets for her Sanka.

      • Donyelle

You forgot about her bottle of Jean Nate!

      • Introspective

and the keys to her pink cadillac with crushed velvet seats.

    • Donyelle

      ENJOLI!

    • sagecreek

      Ewing Oil, BWAHAHAHAHA! Thanks, unks.

      • Rhonda Shore

lol, i was thinking Dynasty (cause i was a Dynasty vice a Dallas person), just needs shoulder pads!!! Gasps…random but does Olivia Wilde resemble Pamela Sue Martin or what?

    • NoveltyRocker

That belt is pretty out of place here and sort of ugly with the grey and that weird belly-button protrusion. A necklace like that makes more sense wrapped around a closed collar and would have done its job as a statement piece if the belt wasn’t fighting it and the hair wasn’t hiding most of it. The shoes are too shiny and too standard to elevate any of this. The attitude she seems to going for is muffled by the daintiness of a tiny shoulder strap purse. Too many competing messages in too many disparate pieces.

    • shirab

Is that a Little League signet ring? Intriguing. I hope there’s a good story behind it.

      • GillianHolroyd

The ring is cute. Her hand looks good. That’s all I got.

    • calimon

I’ve seen that chunky necklace with blouse combo all over Pinterest for office wear. Nothing much ‘celebrity’ to me about it.

    • Morales Mike

That first line had me cracking up. Definitely Dallas pre-Travilla makeover. More Tina Louise early seasons.

    • Little_Olive

Working Girl after pulling an all-nighter with Mr Trask. Eva, you are better than this.

    • marlie

This is… fine, I guess, BUT what gets me is that this is from “her” line. So a) it would have been nice if the skirt actually fit her properly, and b) it would have been nice if her line actually FELT like it belonged to her. This is SO not the Eva we’ve all come to know and love.

    • Shawn EH

Has she ever been seen in the same room with Gina Gershon?

      • Miranda

        You’re onto something here.

        • Shawn EH

Dying to see Gina playing Donatella in the upcoming tv movie, btw!

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Yeah, I this is a little generic office vixen. It doesn’t look bad, but she easily looks better 90% of the time.

    • Tarquin

She hopes that rogue J.R. WON’T keep his hands to himself; she’s heard things

    • MagicMermaid

It’s the eyebrows. She normally wears them much lighter, but some makeup queen picked up the wrong pencil. Also, her contouring looks rather stark in these photos. But the brows are def throwing the entire look off and into the “harsh” category.

    • Dagney

Oh heck, I like this. But I like this “type.” The JLos, the Vergaras, the Mendes’ of world…bring it on. Their look always says “confident, beautiful, and yeah I am GAME.”

    • mickiemonkey

She looks like she wants to bite some chicken’s head off or something.

    • randeekay

She must have started shopping at Belk…for the modern southern Eva Mendes!
