Emmys 2013 IN or OUT: Zooey Deschanel in J. Mendel

Posted on September 23, 2013

You wouldn’t believe how many more dresses we have to get to before the sun sets on this day. But we are caffeinated and determined, darlings. We just need to get over the style hump.

Zooey Deschanel attends the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California in a J. Mendel column gown with side slit with bijoux embroidery paired with an Edie Parker clutch, Charlotte Olympia heels, and Chanel jewelry.

J. Mendel Resort 2014 Collection

We need your help on this one. You see, the opinions have been flowing like water today, and we know we’ve got plenty more to come, but we fear we’re suffering a blockage on this one. It’s … good? Color’s … nice? Maybe a bit stiff and Real Housewifey? We don’t feel strongly about it either way, except we feel like it should be discussed. This is where you come in, kittens. We’ve trained you well, now use your little claws to rip her dress to shreds. Or not, as the case may be.

IN! She is giving me everything I need.

OUT! Mafioso’s girlfriend.

Kiernan Shipka’s Road-Less-Traveled dress is also open for your opinion. Go and express it.

I think this is a step forward for her (minus the ugly shoes), so I’ll give it an “In”

Did anyone else see her present last night with her sister? She seemed to be totally drunk (bleary eyed, messing up her lines, etc.)!

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      Pretty and adult. IN.

    • Adriana

On the one hand, the dress is very pretty and the hair and makeup are nice. On the other hand, the shoes are tragic and the nail art is annoying. leas to go with an IN since at least she had the sense not to wear black tights.

    • Jangle57

I think she looks lovely in this; my only quibble is the fit around the right hip or maybe it’s just the way the fabric is gathered? whatever – IN

    • Mars Tokyo

Her shoes are a size too big for her. Must be crazy walking in them.

    • Joyce VG

IN! But i am a very biased fan of hers. Her shoes are too big which is funny in a way. The color is very nice on her and brings out her blue eyes. I’m not crazy about how shiny the material is but the construction of the dress is nice. She looks lovely.

    • Mariah J

OUT…It may have worked without the country singer hair but I guess we’ll never know.

    • solidcurrency

Shoes and slit are terrible. The bust is off. The fabric looks weird. OUT.

    • SouthernGirlRena

I want to pull her hair up, maybe a sleek pony? The color looks great on her. I think it’s the styling that is making it look to matronly. In but not IN.

    • Agatha Guilluame

I feel bad that she has to wear bangs for the rest of her life. Alas, living in a cartoon universe has its pluses and minuses. Hulk Hogan and Richard Simmons seem content.

    • quiltrx

IN! Her hair looks gorgeous and works with the (Stepford Wife-y? Not that I mean that bad) dress. Only quibble is those awful shoes, but that’s a trend not many can fight I guess.

    • MaryAtRealityTea

Oh god… just so no! It looks like a costume, especially with the Murphy Brown hair. It’s like she watched Mad Men S1 and decided to dress up. It’s so matronly and weird. So OUT! Know thyself, Zoe, and thy self is not a 65-year-old society matron.

    • e jerry powell

Now what about the Unified Deschanel Color Scheme from last night?

    • amanda lynn

I like. IN. Different shape for her.

    • Valdri8

Is that a pierced epiglottis? What the hell is that?

    • SophieCollier

IN, because, dear God, at least its not her typical awkward twee. She actually looks grown up.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

She’s not wearing black tights. I’ll take mafioso girlfriend – at least it’s a new look for her. IN.
Actually, if she were in a scarface type movie as the girlfriend/wife, I might actually not find her so annoyingly twee.

    • ItsDicey

      No tights. IN

    • GTrain

IN. I’m not crazy about the dress but it looks very nice on her. But are we seeing her tonsils or is that just an awkward flash reflection on a tongue stud?

    • Aaminah Khan

So IN. It’s totally not her usual, but it’s still in her style wheelhouse. It’s girly and cute, but also grown-up and a little glam. The undereye makeup is leaving me a little cold, but that’s my only real quibble.

    • littlemac8

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I’ll give her an IN because it’s different (for her), because the color sets off her eyes and because she’s not doing the “sad clown” pose.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I’d like this better without the matchy shoes, but I think she looks lovely and this is SO much better than her usual “look at me, I’m so idiosyncratic” schtick that I have to vote IN.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

My gosh. She needs a new hairstyle, one that doesn’t cover half her dress and most of her face. Not to mention her neck and shoulders. I’m baffled by other fashion judges who LOVED her look.

The dress was just okay. The fabric is a beautiful color but it revels every wrinkle and every seam. The seam to the boob looks a bit like a nipple. There is something very nice about the dress. The actual styling may be the problem.

    • Reality TV Casting

      out sooorry zooey

    • MK03

IN. IN!!!! She looks like an adult so IN!!!!

    • Kimi Colney

Out..nice color but along with the satin-y pumps it looks a little too bridesmaid-y

    • Michelle Wilson

Her hair looks a bit too heavy and I don’t love the shoes, but the dress is good. I wouldn’t call it an Out, but it’s not quite an In either. It’s a purgatory.

    • Slanted & Enchanted

    • mmebam

The profile is so awkward. I can’t. #Out

    • Kimberlini

IN The best she’s ever looked and I like the dress on her. Having said that, I hate those shoes.

    • Corsetmaker

I like the dress but it’s a touch tight on her which is taking away from the shape. I love that swoop on the model from the drape down the slit. And I think the shape would be more dramatic with her hair up showing the back of her neck. In.

    • Claudia

Wow – lotta mustache nail art hate on here. That is quite possibly one of the strangest sentences I’ve ever written.

    • Claudia Fernandes

In: she looks very pretty and flew away from the black tights

    • Constant Reader

OUT. Mother of the Groom — right down to the ridiculous mustache nails designed to make that bitch her son is marrying cry every time she looks at the wedding pictures.

      • BrooklynBomber

“Mother of the Groom” — haha! Why don’t we ever hear that?

    • Erica_Vuitton

She gave up the black tights and and her dress is such a pretty color. IN

    • mozzer0906

Out – the fabric is too bridesmaid and stiff. The shoes are too matchy. Just no.

    • BayTampaBay

IN! I think she looks great and it is great departure from her normal too quirky. I never thought “too quirky” worked for formal evening wear.

    • Judy_S

In. I really liked this on stage, and it’s a good red-carpet color too. It reminded me of Anne H’s problematic pink apron dress, and I thought, well, this is how that kind of heavily darted matte satin show-me dress should be done.

    • formerlyAnon

IN. She looks good, and as if she’s accepted being an adult without ambivalence, at least for an evening.

    • fringebenefit

      IN. Unqualified.

    • MrsBug

Actually, it’s so different from the twee/quirky stuff she usually does, I’m going to give her an IN. I think she looks great. I wish I had her hair.

    • carnush

I don’t like the gathering in the front, but the slit is dramatic and the color is beautiful. IN!

    • http://www.bethposts.blogspot.com/ Buffy

IN! She should do more minimalist looks. The shoes are hiddy though

    • PeggyOC

Trophy Step-Mother of the Bride at a mafia wedding. Out.

    • reddhouston

In…I think this is so much better then a lot of her usual stuff

    • Alexander Peterhans

IN. Really bored with her hair, though.

    • Sofia Lopez Garcia

IN. I love it. And the mustache nail art just gives us a little bit of her quirkyness without hitting us over the head with it.

    • mhlmh

      IN. Beautiful color.

    • Jessica Freeman

IN, even though I hate the shoes.

      • Anplica Fiore

Agreed. The gigantic shoes make it look like she didn’t have enough time to get it hemmed.

    • Sara Brams-Miller

Considering how Twee she usually is, I think it looks AMAZING on her.

    • http://visceralresponse.com/ visceral response

Out because Zooey will always be out until she cuts that lacefront looking hair of hers. I like the dress but that big, wiggy mop doesn’t work with it.

    • Badriya Al-Badi’a

Out, it’s shapeless where it should have a shape and has shapes where it should have none. Color’s not quite right either.

    • supri_supri

In! So glad she is not in floofy princess-wear. The column is a nice great departure for her and the color is gorgeous. I am digging the huge hair, there is something very 60s Italian film star about it. I don’t love the shoes though. I want ginormous platforms to be over already.

    • Not applicable

I agree- glad she’s finally out of the 50s- but she went straight to Lisa Vanderpump (so sorta back to the 50s…) keep trying Zooey- we’re rooting for you!

    • Carol

IN, if only because it’s such a departure for her, style-wise. Keep it up, Zooey!

    • Cathy S

I love this dress. Very pretty. In.

    • Dan_In_NYC

It’s a great color and I like the top, but the bottom half looks a little stiff.

And with the bloodshot glassy eyes – especially while presenting- we can agree she was baked, right?

    • Danielle

The lack of tights is making me happy.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

IN. I don’t understand what the problem is (aside from hideous shoes). I think she looks much more chic than usual and she isn’t wearing black tights so shouldn’t we give her props for that? I know, I know, no grading on a curve but still, the color is fantastic on her.

    • BrooklynBomber

I keep expecting this (breaking up link in hopes it posts):

          • Lilyana_F

            Spot-on :)

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I’m going to give this an IN because *literally* my only issue is that it could have been a more WOW kind of color. Other than that – perfect. Just what she needs. This is so far from that cloyingly cutesie-poo hipster doll stuff she’s been forcing down our throats that I almost can’t believe she got it so right.

    • Lilyana_F

In. I love this dress, and I really hate her usual style.

    • ojosazules

In. Gorgeous color for her and so elegant.

    • sagecreek

IN, even though I hate her.

And for those of you who have Time Warner cable, have you seen the excessively obnoxiously commercial with her? If I didn’t hate her before, I would now.

Still — looks wise? This is In.

    • Lizzyisi

In, I think. Usually she looks like she’s still mostly in costume for another stupid manic pixie dream girl commercial, but this time she looks like a bridesmaid at the wedding of some second-cousin to a Kennedy descendant. It’s almost sophisticated, but just weird enough from some angles that it won’t upstage the bride. Pretty color on her and for once it doesn’t look like she put on false eyelashes BEFORE her mascara.

    • pepper76

IN! She looks grown up, but it’s still very her. Pretty color. Those shoes are from the devil, but everything else is great.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

IN. I wish she’d s trim her bangs a little bit though.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

It’s meh, but I want to applaud the absence of dark tights.

    • Kate Harrington

I really love this. It is different for her and much more classic than usual, but it’s still very much her personality because of the styling, namely, her hair. Love it! I think it looks better on her than on the model, because she’s curvier and can fill it out better. Often a keyhole like that in this type of fabric can float away from the wearer, but on her it does what it’s supposed to, which is sit directly on her chest. A+

    • berlinmama

IN Nice dress, but horrible shoes. I am so over the platform look!

    • Vtg Fashion Library

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

All of that! She looks grown-up, which removes my terrible, terrible urge to smack her. Except for the nails, but hey, I can deal with that.

    • kim bunchalastnames

now i keep picturing her eyes popping. hahahaha. … sorry. *slinks away*

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Right? I mean, she’s 33 years old. I’m not saying she should venture into grande dame territory, but it’s time for her to stop dressing like a 19 year old college student.

    • Alison

She must have wanted to give the mani cam a show.

    • Valdri8

Me too. That is too fucking weird even for me

    • ankali

I agree. She looks kind of brittle and generic. It’s not that she looks bad, it just doesn’t look like her dress. So OUT, I guess.

    • KC

I dunno, the nails are cute to me. I kinda like mustache art, its funny.

    • bingo

I was thinking the same thing. a pierced uvula. I thought I was hallucinating, so I did a quick search in the comments for “uvula” and found yours. THANK YOU!

    • Cheryl

Oh interesting. I know that they borrow jewellery, had no idea about the shoes.

    • snevhead

I know! Is her uvula pierced?!? Apparently, that’s A Thing.

    • Constant Reader

I swear I hadn’t seen your comment before I said something similar below!

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Even Allison Williams had nail art though – which has to mean that the trend has jumped the shark and is now the very definition of cookie-cutter model zombie.
