Emma Watson in Balenciaga at the 2013 GQ Men of the Year Awards

Posted on September 04, 2013

The tight and shiny stuff so many of the lady attendees go for when it comes to dressing for the GQ Men of the Year Awards? It doesn’t always come naturally to Miss Emma.

And y’know? As a couple of queens, we say thank goodness for that. No, she’s not sporting the hottest look in the room, but she’s serving up look-at-me without sacrificing her style cred. We’ll take interesting over T&A any day of the week, but that pretty  much goes without saying, we suppose.

This kind of look feels like it’s beyond normal critiquing, but if our opinion had been asked, we would have put her in some sandals. We also would’ve suggested less voluminous pants than those. We probably would’ve gone for more metallic accents and maybe some showy earrings just to take it into night-time and slightly away from the conceptual. Still, we appreciate the effort. It’s unconventional in a room full of pretty girls in tight dresses.

    Unusual but very pretty. Attagirl!

  • SewingSiren

She’s not exactly Rooney Mara but she looks better than the models that’s for sure.

  • Lilithcat

Pretty, but she doesn’t look very comfortable in it.

    • 3boysful

It’s like she’s trying to convince herself that because she’s wearing sleeves, she’s really not that exposed.

  • Monday1900

Oh no, no, no! She should have worn the full black outfit in my opinion–the white top looks ridiculously big and she doesn’t have the Tilda/Cate quality needed to carry it off. Vamping like she’s dressing up in Mom’s (very spendy) outfit. She still looks so young to me too–hard to believe she’s 23. I like the makeup except for the blush.

    • Mary_Shelley

I don’t know…the black top makes the model look droopy-boobed.

    • Getoverit

Agreed, the black top may have looked better. I like the high waist on the pants but they needed to be a slimmer fit and yes to some snappier sandals. She is such a tiny thing!

  • random_poster

I like that she wore long pants. This pair would work better on a taller woman. I’m not a fan of the top, but it’s not offensive, and I can appreciate the effort.

  • marlie

I like the idea of this, but I think it would have worked better if the pants were a little smaller (less voluminous, like TLo said). But it’s certainly interesting. And from the neck up, she looks just lovely. Her hair and makeup are really simple, but very pretty.

  • hughman

One of her gays needed to shove some crumpled tissue paper up around her shoulders to give it more shape.

  • No, Emma. Thank you, but no.

    • If she had asked for my opinion, I would have told her to say, “No thanks, what else do you have?”

    • bitchybitchybitchy

This is not working. Emma looks uncomfortable, as if she knows in her heart that this is not her look. As a public service announcement to the design community I for one would like to see bare midriffs limited to the summer and casual venues. If I wanted to see this much of a ladystar’s ribcage I’d request a personal meeting.

  • Sobaika

Gurl. No. I get what she’s trying for but no.

  • Jacquelyn

Not in love with the shoes. I do love black and white and maybe this is my own personal taste but give me some color somewhere: shoes, clutch, jewelry. Her eyes look killer, though.

    • mlle

I would love her in slimmer cut pants with a jewel-toned pair of pumps.

  • Judy_S

I like it! Especially in the short and shiny context.

    • Rhonda Shore

Speaking of short and shiny, i miss her pixie. It was stupendous!

  • MilaXX

I like it. My only quibble is she needs a better pair of earrings.

  • Nick

    This is a comment.

  • Clueless_Jock

    Aerodynamic chicness.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Looking good, Hermione! Now, since you’ve also featured Danielle Radcliffe, time for a little Rupert Grint? It’ll be harder to find but pleeeaaassseeee TLo? You’d make me a super happy Bitter Kitten!

    • Kristin McNamara

Seconded! Rupert always was my favorite. Damn gingers. They get me every time!

  • Courtenay P

Nice try. Keep up the good work. And wow she has a gorgeous face.

  • jmorino08

GOD! NO! That is awful and ridiculous and NO!!!!!

  • formerlyAnon

I think she’s owning the trousers, and overall it’s something I almost-love. I don’t know if the top is making her just a shade uncomfortable, or it’s making *me* just a shade uncomfortable, but there’s something about how it fits/she’s wearing it that keeps me at the “strong like with mysteriously missed potential” level.

  • Tatiana Luján

I wouldn’t mind the voluminous pants if they were hemmed to hit at her ankes.

  • Kent Roby

She’s so pretty, and she manages to balance that line of maturing-but-still-very-young, without going twee or slutty. Seeing what her contemporaries wear, reaching that balance is clearly difficult for many to achieve.

  • majorbedhead

I don’t know if it’s because she’s still Hermione in my head, but her come-hither looks are squicking me out.

  • Rand Ortega

Kudos for daring. The black top is much more flattering. The white 1 looks like she’s ready for take off.

  • mjude

love her too. a sweet little fawn.

  • bertkeeter

I can go withy the shoulder treatment…but the bandeau? NO! And yes, slimmer pants would be a big improvement over these baggy belt at the cuff things!

  • Leslie Streeter

Awful. The clothes are wearing her, not the other way around. I see where she is going with it, but it doesn’t work. She looks like a little girl who got locked naked in the couture closet.

  • theblondette

She’s a sweet girl, but not enough presence to make this kind of outfit work.

    • Mazenderan

Totally. She’s not really got what it takes to wear this convincingly – not yet, at least.

Also – I can’t imagine that is an easy top to wear comfortably. That must take some major strategy to avoid breasts popping or falling out.

      • demidaemon

yes, and that strategy is copious amounts of boob tape.

  • clairellis

    B for effort.

  • amanda lynn

while i see your points… i still don’t like it.

  • HM3

I would’ve placed this in a “Girl-That-Is-Not-Your-Outfit” post. Hand this over to Rooney Mara.

  • Imasewsure

I like interesting but not ugly and non-sensical…. not feeling this one at all but then again I’m not a fan of her RC style in general

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

A tube top is a tube top is a tube top. No exeptions.

  • turtleemily

I like the androgyny of it, especially for the event.

  • elemspbee

Oh yay. I’m really glad you’ve posted this for discussion T’Lo. I saw it another blog which had nothing intelligent to say about it.

I think this is an incredibly smart look, and quite consistent with Emma’s sharp style. I agree that pants are a tad voluminous, and yes sandals with those pants would have worked better. But I love this look. I especially love what’s happening with the shoulders/sleeves. It’s cerebral sexy.

    • conniemd

I would have preferred the black top with the pants as I’m not keen about so much bare midriff. I feel like this top is almost, but not quite right, perhaps looser with less bare midriff.

  • snarkykitten

The top looks unfinished. Or something Link would wear, whilst running around Hyrule. Don’t like it.

    • demidaemon

If Link wore this around Hyrule, I think we would all finally know that he doesn’t bat for Zelda’s team.

I hope I haven’t mixed up my metaphors here.

  • decormaven

It’s intriguing, but the volume of the pants is too much. Also, the top needs more oomph in the shoulders. I’ll give her points for going against the tight/shiny expected dress.

  • MK03

Oh dear. That is so…not her.

  • kimmeister

    The pants erase her hips.

    • sagecreek

In that case, I need to buy me some of those.

      • Constant Reader

I need a pair in every color.

  • kmk05

Her face is perfection. And… the more I look at it, the more I like it. She’s kind of thumbing her nose down at the entire thing and stealing the show while she’s at it.

  • nannypoo

I don’t know about this. She has such a young, fresh face and when she goes out in a top that is really nothing but a bra with shoulders I don’t quite feel it’s right for her.

  • Alloy Jane

Underboob, awkward pants, and hideous shoes. *sigh* Oh Emma. You can do better than this. This outfit is as awful as your Hermione interpretation. At least the hair is cute.

  • quiltrx

I think the top would be more flattering (and she’d likely look more comfortable) if the capelet part had a little more volume to it. It sort of gives the impression she can’t/shouldn’t lift her arms.
She looks cute, and I applaud going something different than slutty-slutty-slutty for this event.

  • Trisha26

You praise this (up to a point), say it’s almost beyond normal critiquing, and yet dare to critique Gaga who’s “going there” with fashion, critics be damned. Fie! Forget T&A on the RC, how about RIBS? I don’t want to see those. But EW is one of my irrational hates, on screen and off, so I’ll just keep quiet. HA!

  • lilyvonschtupp

    Oh, what the hell??????

  • 1964edithgrove

    You guys are so kind…

  • Tracy_Flick

The biggest problem with this look is how uncomfortable she looks in it.

  • LaSylphide

The Mickey Mouse ears in the first picture aren’t helping. However, i do like the top.

  • crash1212

Unusual. Not sure I like it, but I don’t hate it. Would’ve nailed it using Uncle T & Lo’s suggestions. Absolutely LOVE everything going on from the neck up.

  • Pennymac

This is the “Emperors New Clothes” for me. My beloved Uncles and BKs are all “Odd! Edgy! Unexpected!”
And I’m all “Eww! Yuck! Awful!”

Do I have to turn in my P.U.F. card????

    • demidaemon

No, I’m with you. But I could see that top working if it was styled incredible differently. It’s too much skin on the wrong part of the body. I don’t particularly like exposed midriff, even though Emma here has a pretty fabulous midriff.

  • capybara_cafe

That is a HORRIBLE top. Horrible.

  • Calinda_L

She’s pulling off a Swinton-level outfit. I see good — or at the very least, highly interesting — things for years to come from this one.

  • eandh99

She’s a stylish girl and clearly wants to grow up to be a fashionista, but sometimes she just bites off more than she can chew. Like this outfit, or the Bottega Veneto she wore to the NYC premiere of the last Harry Potter. If you can’t convince people that you look FABULOUS in the outfit, just leave it at home.

  • Zaftiguana

HP kids are bringing it today!

  • carnush

The pants are just a tad too big…or long? Love the top and her head.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I love that she tried, and I think more is working than is not. I like the voluminous pant to balance the shoulder, particularly since a lot of the volume is at the ankle. With slim pants she really would look like a high-fashion football player. The point about the shoes is fair, the open-toe black booties make it look as though her feet are being swallowed. A structural sandal or something with texture would have been nice. The face is not quite strong enough for a look this bold, but I really do think she’d pulling it off.

    • Erica_Vuitton

Now all I can see is the football pad shoulders. Good call!

  • LesYeuxHiboux

This is the kind of look only a more daintily endowed lady can rock, any cleavage at all and it goes straight to trashy and never looks back.

  • Pudgy Possum

Why do I feel like the only one who hates this outfit? Everything looks too big on her, and it’s all so awkward paired together.

    • demidaemon

      You’re not. Believe me.

  • demidaemon

Effort appreciated. Outfit is not. I don’t like the top and I hate these pants with it. I think a high-waisted sleeker pant was called for. then I might switch to a neutral feeling about the top.

  • AnneElliot

I hate it. The outfit is wearing her, it looks like she’s playing dressup. Love the makeup, though.

Have we talked about how she and Kiernan Shipka need to play sisters in something? Is that a thing already? Because I keep confusing them for each other in thumbnails.

  • Sherilyne Cox

At least she can ride a bike without getting her pant legs caught in the chain. Was that top inspired by the Flying Nun or a tea cozy?

  • Oh my, she is so beautiful!

  • Danae

The shoes she’s wearing are perfect for the great looking pants. She’s polished and very pretty. That top is awful.
