Emilia Clarke in Donna Karan Atelier at the HBO’s 2013 Emmys After Party

Posted on September 24, 2013

For some odd reason, there seem to be no pictures of her walking the Emmys red carpet, even though she wore this dress during the ceremony. We would have loved to have seen this in better lighting, because we have a feeling we’re not getting the true color here.

“Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke attends HBO’s Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Post Award Reception at The Plaza in Los Angeles, California in a Donna Karan Atelier chalk blue 3-ply silk georgette gown with geometric leaf textured cut-outs paired with a Rauwolf clutch and Forevermark jewelry.

We think it’s gorgeous, but it’s also wearer-specific. A blandly pretty gal would be lost in this dress and it would wind up looking like tissue paper on her. And it could also skew a bit mature, depending on who’s wearing it. But she’s tiny, young, and intense-looking, which means she’s selling the dress like crazy. It’s pretty and dramatic, with some textural interest, but you never really stop looking at her face, which is as it should be. Loving the touches of silver, but someone needed to take a Windex wipe to that belt before she hit the step-and-repeat.

By the way, who is the hyperactive marketing person that came up with this step-and-repeat? Is it designed to make everyone look bad and induce nausea in all who view it? If so, then well done, genius.

Sorry, but crumpled facial tissues is all I can see here.

I looked at this dress & thought, oh my, what unfortunate wrinkling, before I actually read the description of “geometric leaf-textured cutouts”.

    • charlotte

She should have accessorized with a dragon.
Why she chose this Zosia/Audreybot hairdo is beyond me. It doesn’t even look good on them.

She is stunningly beautiful. And like Lily Collins, I dig her strong brows and hope she doesn’t change them. But I am not feeling that eye makeup AT ALL.

      • gabbilevy

When she walked out onto the stage during the ceremony, I shouted “NOoOOOO EmILIA!” out loud. The hair and face made me weep. She’s far too beautiful.

      • Sobaika

She looked fug during the telecast – from a wide shot it basically gave her hooded raccoon eyes. It’s in the closeups where I can see what her makeup artist was going for.

      • Introspective

literally i thought when she came on stage “well she looks dead about the eyes”… her makeup artist needs to be fired. as well as the stylist who thought she needed absolutely no jewelry above the wrists. the dress looks prettier in these stills though.

by the way, why has there been like a 3 yr strike against jewelry in hollywood???

That belt reads cheap due to the fingerprints on it, and that’s a shame. Dear uncles, you are so right- that’s the fugliest step n repeat and carpet ever. And to think that carpet was custom designed for the walk- what a waste of an upcharge.

      • 3boysful

Perhaps HBO’s graphic design artist was on an acid trip and listening to Sgt Pepper.

        • decormaven

You are kind. I think somebody’s recreating the backdrop from an old Cowsills Ed Sullivan performance.

          • ballerinawithagun

            Exactly!!!

    • Rhonda Shore

She’s exquisite. Love the brows too.

    • Jessica Freeman

It teeters too far into bridal gown for me…

    • hmariec19

I’m not sure I like the dress, but she is my fence-jumper (term borrowed from my fabulous gay uncles) and I love her so she is PERFECT.

      Hmpf.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

God, you just can’t make her look bad.

    • Jaeda Laurez

On tv, I though it was a nice pale blue. I think it’s flashed out. But I dig her-she has an interesting quality to her face.

    • steeg of their own

After getting used to her with the Targaryen silver hair, she looks exceedingly strange to me in her natural color. That way-too-strong eye makeup is not helping.

    • HM3

It is working like crazy for her face and skin tone. I especially love the hard/soft play with the belt and the flower-petal top (almost à la Tom Ford). <3

    • Mary Lauer

I think this dress is what so many PR contestants are attempting ot achieve when they fasten fluttery little bits onto a dress. They don’t make it work, but this dress is wonderful!

    • Lucas

She looks SO different when she is out of character! I don’t think I’d recognize her if I passed her on the street. Strikingly beautiful young woman, though.

    • Diego!

Mmm she is lacking some gold bracelets and necklace. Also the metal belt should be gold too. The dress is very interesting but it makes her left breast look odd.

    • Jacquelyn

Totally different when she’s not in character. I love this look.

    • MilaXX

      I’m missing an earring here.

    • Blair Sylvester

the leafs look a bit used tissue like and the titscrepency bugs me as does the one shoulder illusion netting

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

      My kingdom for an accessory.

      • FrigidDiva

That’s all I could think when I saw this. She is absolutely lovely, but some earrings and maybe a cuff would have aided this look tremendously.

    • Trickytrisha

I do adore this woman, but her hair is too severe and for me, off putting. She probably looked fresher earlier in the evening, but this isn’t my favorite look of hers by a long shot. On my monitor, her “chalk blue” gown definitely looks white with some faintly light green draping on the skirt.

    • VeryNot

OK dress (I dig the silver accents, love the belt), but her hair and makeup are complete fail. She’s stunningly beautiful, but you can only see a hint of it here. Somehow her makeup artist managed to make her eyes look tired and smaller. And I’ll never get on board with oil slicked, parted-down-the-middle hair. I don’t know anyone who looks good in that style.

    • Kathy_Marlow

That ring she’s wearing needs to come and live at my house, now…please?

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I get why she would want to be the anti-Khaleesi in daily life, but I still think the hair is a little too severe. Also, “geometric leaf-textured cutouts” is a bit of a reach for those crumpled rags.

    • filmcricket

Earrings, for the love of God.

    • Danielle

The fingerprints on the belt are all I focus on. Cringe.

      • mommyca

        hahaha! I noticed that too!

    • anotherkate

When her hair is dark she reminds me so much of Fiona Apple. They could play sisters. As for the dress? I don’t love it. I also think the lighting is doing weird things to her makeup.

    • Lilithcat

I kept thinking the dress was wrinkled.

      But she is beautiful.

    • SugarSnap108

She’s so pretty, but no. It looks like tissue paper with a cheap silver ribbon tied around it. And she desperately needs earrings.

    • tonibaloney

Did you forget to put your wig on? That hair is a shellacked mess!

    • Lilyana_F

She’s very pretty, but this reads as toilet paper to me.

    • jilly_d

She is so ridiculously beautiful, and that stupid shadow painted all the way up to her brows just ruins everything. When she walked onstage I wanted to reach through the tv with a damp microfiber and just get rid of it.

    • OffToSeeHim

What’s that thing on her forehead?

    • marlie

Emilia looks gorgeous. She’s one of those ladystars who rarely has a misstep. Only edit: a slightly bolder lip color.

    • Violentcello

Her eyes look dirty. Not digging the hair or makeup. I like strong brows, but these seem too big for her face almost.

    • Imasewsure

I don’t know who she is so I guess that lessens the magic for me but I don’t think this looks good or interesting at all. Looks like a whip cream dress to me (which actually I should love)

      • Aziza

Yeah, I was thinking Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass should have received some credit.

    • CommentsByKatie

Khaleesi, WTF? It shocks me how bland she looks in real life compared to her Daenerys costume. There is such a shocking contrast – more than any other celeb/character I can think of. She is so beautiful as a platinum blonde. I wish she would do that in real life, too!

    • demidaemon

I can’t even look at her the backdrop and floor is so bad. I am experiencing a bout of vertigo right now.

    • kolokOlchik

I keep trying to understand whether this dress is ice-blue or green or if it’s actually a very pale mauve/cream./rose?

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

the description says it’s chalk blue, whatever that is.

    • Dagney

Uh…?….Princess Leia, the Lhullier years????? I guess??

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

she’s giving a bit of the ravished maiden look here. i love it. khaleesi can do no wrong. she is infallible.

    • kathrineb

I think she needs to branch out. She always seems to be in something white and strapless.
