DKNY Spring 2014 Collection

Posted on September 09, 2013

With the brand celebrating its 25th anniversary, Donna Karan took DKNY back to the future. She offered up a surprising modern take on ’90s hip hop styles while making sure we all understood she’s not just looking back, by having Rita Ora close the show by dancing down the runway. As always with DKNY, the looks are strong, urban, and confident. The collection overall can best be summed up as “retro-funky modern.” It’s fun, youthful and still chic.

I really need to know how that last dress is staying on the model.

    • Good intentions and surgical tape.

    • Caitlin

It actually has minuscule spaghetti straps

      • oatmealpie

        More like angel hair straps.

        • fursa_saida

Rice noodle straps? Ramen (pulled straight) straps?? Definitely not udon straps; those we would be able to see.

I’ve become bizarrely invested in this question.

      • Louise Bryan

        clear plastic minuscule spaghetti straps…

    • TheLaurenJean

      Super Glue

    • YoungSally

    • Emily

Because Karlie Kloss is really just that good.

    • titaness25

    • Deedles

      Fishing line.

  • Sunraya

I’m unimpressed. I do like the Easter egg colors, though.

  • Billie_Dawn

Strangely enough, Rita Ora is the best-dressed person here.

  • RoseJB

I’m really not feeling this one. Frumpy coverall shorts? Slinky evening gowns with high top sneakers? What is this stuff? And I really don’t understand that coverall, rain poncho, maxi dress mess.

    • Tatiana Luján

I’m not feeling this collection either.

    • Clueless_Jock

Yes, it’s trying too hard and yet strangely formulaic.

  • Rita Ora is auditioning for Desperately Seeking Susan: The Musical.

    • Rhonda Shore

It’s the best I’ve seen Rita Ora look! And I LOVE that boxy red coat with the black pockets!

    • wontons

…which I’d totally go see. And DKNY should do the whole wardrobe.

I actively hate some of this stuff (especially the stuff with DKNY all over it), but I admire the eclecticism.

  • imspinningaround

I really love those blue and red scuba coats. And the comfortable-looking shoes make me happy.

  • MilaXX

Love everything but that last red gown. Even as I rapidly approach the big 50, I still lust after the cartoon covered jeans.

    • random_poster

Yes! How old do we have to be before we can start wearing those again?

  • Danielle

You’ll never be able to convince me that overalls are high fashion.

    • kimmeister

Dropped crotch, pegged overalls, no less. They make my whole body cringe.

    • ankali

I cannot tell you how tempted I was to just come down here and comment “Lost me at the overalls” without looking at any of the rest of the collection. And I can’t say I would have missed much. Huge disappointment from Donna.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Those platform running sneakers are hilariously ugly. 7 rows up from the bottom, Sporty Spice would’ve killed the other 4 Girls for that track pants/bra set. 90’s for sure! LOOOOVE Karlie in that last orange dress, will just have to mentally block whatever it is you call those things on her feet.

  • mmebam

    Not loving the pastels.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

  • martha

Now EVERYONE is using Sustainacorn’s racerfront!

  • marlie

Some interesting individual pieces, though the collection as a whole is a little underwhelming. Though I really like most of the mens’ looks.

    • demidaemon

I agree. I think they are the best of the lot here.

  • decormaven

Not a fan of the logo-marked designs. That’s been played out.

    • marlie

And it’s a bit tacky, no?

  • Nancer

  • kittenwithaquip

I scrolled halfway through and found myself wishing I could throw a Grumpy Cat “No.” jpeg in the comments section and be done. I was born in 1970; I’ve lived through some ugly-ass fashion trends, but ’90’s hip-hop is probably one of my least favorite aesthetics. I’m really not ready to live through it a second time.

  • Jacquelyn

Nothing caught my eye whatsoever except the giant DKNY logo clothing which just hurt.

  • therealkuri

The trench skirt is a perfect example of something that I find brilliant in theory but hate the execution here. Maybe I’d like it better with a fitted shirt instead of that baggy t-shirt.

  • Synnae

I hate everything about this collection (looks like an expensive H&M/RiverIsland/ASOS rip-off imo) except the black and white dresses in the final row. Probably because they’re slinky, clean and can also be worn by those who suffered 90’s fashion first time round…

  • MoHub

The ones with the DKNY graphic print remind me of Chris March’s PR Hershey Challenge dress, only not as cool.

  • Stella Zawistowski

Is that a shower curtain overall dress? I can’t.

  • kimmeister

So racerfronts are apparently a thing for this upcoming season.

    • Who would have guessed that the unicorn lover shared a fashion POV with Donna Karan?

  • MzzPants

Wow. If memory serves, this is a departure from recent DKNY shows. It feels like they’re rebranding for a younger crowd.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I want to see someone wear that sheer overalls-gown thing. Not you, Nicki Minaj.

I kinda like the first denim jacket (you know, the really tacky, literal one). Nothing else is quite hitting for me.

  • Jaeda Laurez

Do not want. I wear DKNY and pay DKNY prices when I want to look like a grownup, not like Rita Ora.

  • jmorino08

Is that a two piece trench coat? With the bottom half worn as a skirt? No…. This is kind of disappointing from my perspective. Seems way too gimmicky for someone like DK.

  • Beardslee

These would look really sloppy on mere mortals, and they don’t look great on the models, either.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I’m still stuck on the overalls…there are some nice jackets here.

  • shelbywoo

Hated it. Yes, an In Living Color reference. Also, love the makeup.

  • So, um…overalls are back, huh.

  • LaSylphide

Sixth row from the bottom on the left, yellow trench coat, and the yellow pants suit just above, are the only things that really catch my eye. As for the rest, most of us just aren’t urban enough, chic enough, young enough, thin enough, or rich enough to wear any of this.

    • conniemd

Agree totally. Sad, since IIRC DKNY can actually be bought at Burlington within my budget. That and Michael Kors. But none of these other than that lucious pale yellow make me want to buy.

  • The one model has Sustainicorn’s backward racerback!! Now the judges have to apologize to him.

  • Imasewsure

Nice to see it’s not all black and white (and grey)… she does this well… and why do I love Rita Ora so much? Guess it’s because I’ve never heard her talk or sing….

  • quiltrx

Has anyone else noticed how many times we’ve seen Racer-FRONT tops/dresses since the Sustainicorn was ridiculed for his?
Most of this doesn’t impress, but I for one would love to see patch-covered jeans (and maybe even overalls, I loved mine back in the day) make a comeback!
The only other thing that really catches my eye is the long jacket with the bandana (sort of) print that’s over the swimsuit.

  • CatherineRhodes

Notice how almost every piece is really unflattering on its wearer.

  • Bridget Smith

Since I’ve found items I LOVE for astounding prices ($20 skirt, $40 gown, $70 badass tweed moto jacket) each time I’ve been to a DKNY sample sale, I now just look through for what I’m going to want in a year. Those sporty, simple, short dresses are definitely going to be on the list. But basically nothing else.

  • lonepear

I usually love DKNY, but… blech. (OK, I dig the sheer tank dress, but almost nothing else.)

  • rage_on_the_page

NOOO. No overalls. Bad, Donna. Bad.

  • frannyprof

Wish she had JLo as a Fly Girl.
