Diane Kruger in Prabal Gurung at the Metropolitan Opera House

Posted on September 24, 2013

We need a short break before we tackle any more Emmys gowns. So let’s head on over to the Met and look at their gowns, darlings. They do things differently there.

Diane Kruger attends the Metropolitan Opera Season Opening Production Of ‘Eugene Onegin’ in New York City in a Prabal Gurung dress paired with Casadei for Prabal Gurung shoes, and Prabal Gurung for Chris Habana jewelry.

Okay. maybe not so different. The style at an event like this is more socialite-flavored than Hollywood-tinged (even though we’re looking at a movie star). Less sparkle and skin; more shape and drama. We really like the dress. It took a second to get used to the bib, but we think it works. The only real issue we have is with the white pumps. We can see from the model shot that white shoes work well here, but a white pump never looks anything but bridal to us. Besides, she looks like she’s going to walk right out of them the next time she takes a step.

Is she only wearing one earring? And what is that metal thing higher up on her ear? I’m confused.

    • Sarah

She likes to do that. I’m pretty sure she did it before.

    • ballerinawithagun

Ear cuffs and the single earring are trending right now.

      • twocee

In an era of stupid trends, that’s got to be one of the stupidest.

        • fursa_saida

I’m here for the ear cuffs, but not the single earring.

  • Stunning dress. She is one of the few with the moxie for it.

    • ballerinawithagun

      Love the red lining!

      • Its really what makes the dress sing. And in this case the ascending hemline is done well. No mullet hem here!

        • teensmom99

Yes–another example to demonstrate that uneven hemlines can be great–depends on the rest of the dress.

  • Daisy Walker

Fabulous dress. HATE the shoes–even black pumps would have been better.

  • rage_on_the_page

Would something white and open-toed have been a better choice?

  • Just when I start to question why I love her so, she goes and does something like this, and I feel guilty. I adore it all.

  • Sarah

I feel there’s something of the Flying Nun about it. Like she could take off in a stiff wind.

    • decormaven

There is something jaunty about it, yes?

      • Sarah

Yes. That’s what I meant – not that it was bad, just that it was very lively.

  • BrooklynBomber

Wow. that’s a cool dress. Small quibble, but I think the sash should have been made just ever-so-slightly narrower for someone who’s not model-tall. And black shoes. Maybe strappy/architectural; I think the white shoes work on the model because they have the black trim and are a bit “edgy.”

    • I agree that the cummerbund should be narrower. It’s also too baggy on her.

  • anyalama

I want to like it but I can’t help but see it as a cummerbund and dickey. All it needs is little drawn on buttons and a bow-tie. Either that or a big lobster.

    • Rhonda Shore

Oh shush! I thought this dress was phenomenal and now i’m seeing a lobster bib???

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I love the dress. I’m not even bothered by the shoes. But for the love of all that is holy, could you take your hands out of your pockets?

  • MilaXX

Those have to be the ugliest white shoes I have ever seen. Sure the model is wearing white shoes, but I think the black accents on the models shoes help tie them into the dress better. The ones Diane is wearing are an abomination unto the lord.

    • SouthernGirlRena

The model’s shoes are beautiful but you would have to walk around barefoot and just step up on them to get your picture taken or glue them to the bottom of your foot. There is nothing to keep them on when you took a step.

      • MilaXX

I didn’t mean she should wear the exact shoe the model is wearing. I’m pointing out that the reason the model’s white shoe works is because of the black accents.

        • teensmom99

Sorry but I think the model’s shoes are too matchy.

    • kmk05

The model’s shoes also look a bit art-deco, kind of edgy to go with the edginess of the dress. The pair Diane Kruger is sporting looks like it wanted to be that but failed and ended up in the clearance summer rack. I think naked black sandals would have been much better, if her stylist didn’t want to go off the beaten path.

      • Imasewsure

Summer Clearance Rack… exactly!! They are the women’s equivalent of old man style white penny loafers. Hate them!

  • teensmom99

I think this is the rare instance of a well-deployed white shoe. And fabulous dress.

    • Darva Sutra

I’m with you in the minority – the white shoe is perfect as a component of the overall colorblocking. Please tell me they are leather and not satin, though.

  • FrigidDiva

Instead of scroll down fug, this was scroll down disappointment. Those shoes! Gah, how did anyone think those shoes looked good with this dress?

  • Introspective

shoes are surely a misstep. they give me church lady realness circa 1992. but the dress brings all the drama. lovely indeed.

  • nannypoo

Her makeup is beautiful, I love the dress, the shoes are bad. She has a very high forehead and not-enough-volume hair, so I don’t know what would work better, but I do not like her hair this way.

  • Sunraya

The whole thing leaves me cold, but she usually does. I am not sure why she is considered a style icon, as she seems to get it wrong more often than right, kind of like SJP.

    • filmcricket

In general, I totally agree with you. In this instance, this is my favourite thing she’s ever worn.

  • Diego!

She almost had a WERQ and an ATTAGIRL until I saw her hidepus shoes! Why Diane, why?

  • kimmeister

Striking dress, but I don’t like how the spaghetti straps hang exactly on the knobby part of her shoulder.

  • PastryGoddess

As Big Foot Jr. I just can’t with the white shoes.

    • tinyredlocks

      This fellow Bigfoot agrees.

    • Call me Bee

      Same here.

  • Shawn EH

Awesome, don’t mind the bib, but I wish the dress was really full length. Still, it’s the very definition of the Krugerbot.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I love the dress, but the white pumps are just such a no-no!

  • procrastinatrice

I adore this dress! So cool! Of course, she can pull it off. Not a fan of her at all, but gotta give credit where it’s due. I can even tolerate the hiddy shoes, but the hair is driving me nuts. It looks like she is balding on one side, with such a deep side part and less-than-voluminous hair. Not a good look.

  • RussellH88

“You know white pumps are the sign of a true hooker, and I love you for that.”

  • sagecreek

She looks great, and the shoes suck.

Is anyone still watching The Bridge?

  • Kent Roby

I’m loving the bib effect of the dress here, especially with how it goes down to a tiny single delicate thread where it connects above the shoulders. I would probably love the dress more without the red at the waist, but I admit that she and the dress look really stunning here. And I’m in total agreement with all the kittens who dislike her shoe choice.

  • Jessica O’Connell

I LOVE this dress. So chic and fabulous!

  • KudzuJulep

She looks like Kate Winslet in the last picture.

  • MaggieMae

I can’t believe it. This look has so much against it. The colors, the bib, the hi-low hem, white pumps, Prabal Gurung (grrrr….). But, by some holy miracle, it’s coming together and working for Miss Diane.

  • Janet B

The dress is fabulous, but the odd assortment of earrings are not.

  • carpediva

Did the “gay gasp” of AWE when I saw her in this dress! Did the “gay gasp” of ‘EW!’ when I saw the shoes.

  • Kelly

I think all white shoes should be banned totally. They always make your feet look much bigger than they are. No white shoes ever, that’s my motto. And particularly no white shoes that look as ill-fitting and boring as these.

But I adore and covet the dress. I’m normally quite skeptical of this sort of hem, but it looks great here.

  • random_poster

Love all except for the shoes. I’d kill for that gown and the proper occasion for its wear.

  • bertkeeter

    “Lobster Bibs” are not fashion!

  • Jacquelyn

GAH I love this dress. I have no idea what to do about the shoes. Red feels like it would be too much. Black maybe?

  • crash1212

Love the dress. Hate the shoes. Why is her right ear sans earring?

  • RoseJB

She looks like the most regal penguin. Yellow shoes would have been awesome/hilarious, to complete the look.

  • ashtangajunkie

I love this dress – the shoes don’t ruin the look for me, but they come pretty close.

  • marlie

Diane looks gorge. My only problem is that these are the *wrong* white pumps for this look. These ARE bridal.

  • tereliz

She looks great, the dress is fab, but did you SEE Patty Clarkson at the same event? CRUSHED IT.

  • jilly_d

Scroll-down fug on the shoes. Everything else is great (lone earring notwithstanding).

  • Trickytrisha

Wow, that’s a piece of architecture on her. Beautifully crafted and visually stunning. She’s lovely, but I give up wishing for better hair for her, it’s only gonna happen in photoshoots, apparently. The shoes are Minnie Mouse shoes.

  • ConnieBV

Hm. This just makes me think about The Bridge not being nominated.

    • Shawn EH

Might be just too soon, maybe? The Emmys are always late to spot a trend.

    • Hermione

Do you think perhaps the show was not eligible this year? These Emmys were for the preceding year. The Bridge is too new, right? Maybe next year.

      • demidaemon

I read an article that basically said that procedural dramas are kind of OUT with the academy right now whereas cable dramas (see Mad men, Breaking Bad) are what they like nowadays. Doesn’t really seem fair, but, like everything else in Hollywood, they are trend based.

  • Call me Bee

Absolutely love this dress, and Miss Diane is wearing it well. But I disagree about the shoes. White pumps draw the eye right to the feet every time. I don’t like the model’s white shoes either. Give me a classic black pump with this any day.

  • Imasewsure

Burn all white pumps! I hate them… but I love everything else here. She looks great

  • SugarSnap108

I LOVE this dress without reservation. Which just magnifies how painful those shoes are.

  • Gorge! But I’d have worn a black shoe or even a red one.

  • andi56

That dress is truly wondrous. Were I to see that at the Met, my evening would be complete. But I have never seen white pumps at the Met in all the years I have been spending all of my disposable income there. No, really… ALL of it. But getting back to the subject, black pumps, please; never white.

  • StylishDreaming

I love everything about this look, and yes, that includes the white pumps. It complements the white bib quite nicely, so it’s white on top and bottom.

  • quiltrx

A lot of times I don’t care for what she wears…but this has got to be my favorite dress ever on her!

  • Contralto

I love this dress! The red lining…swoony.

  • lovefashion

This was the best dress of the night-the only one I can recall of many-and my date and I called it out, not realizing it was a bona fide celeb until we read TLo. The shoes and hair part were non issues, she was just stunningly tall, fabulous and thin. I would’ve sworn she was a 19yo model. Austin Scarlet, also there, in Three Musketeers black, might have taken a lesson.

  • kolokOlchik

Oh, I just love this! Love her! She is just so stylish!

  • Alloy Jane

This is the second dress with an ugly shoe reveal. White pumps? Really? Also, DOWN WITH STUPID TRENDS.

  • SorayaS

Stunning!! I also haate white shoes (esp white pumps ugh) but I dont think anything else would work here- black would overpower the red lining and red would dilute the effect of the lining.

  • Jacob Bowen

Diane Kruger is ALWAYS going to give a good show. I wish she had worn the shoes the model had on (or similar ones) but still she looks STUNNING.

  • DuBey2

The shoes on the model were/are fantastic and I wish Diane would’ve worn them. In fact, I think they (NOT the white pump Diane chose) accentuate the dress perfectly for an event like the Met.

    • dschubba

Diane’s shoe is pretty bad, but is walking even possible in the model’s?
