Daniel Radcliffe in David Hart at the Kill Your Darlings Premiere

Posted on September 04, 2013

Sometimes we wonder about Daniel.

Daniel Radcliffe at the premiere of “Kill Your Darlings” during the 2013 Venice Film Festival in David Hart.

Is he really that happy right now? Really?

Anyway, we’re featuring Daniel here as a response to Eddie Redmayne’s comparatively poor showing in an arguably better suit. The jacket doesn’t quite fit Daniel and his collar’s acting all weird, but he’s groomed, polished, facing forward and smiling instead of looking like someone just slapped him awake after a night of drinking. That’s how it done. Even if all the style points aren’t rendered to perfection, you can still throw some goddamn poise into the mix to sell the look. Daniel’s a quintessential showman and understands this perfectly. Redmayne will be forever an amateur in our eyes until he figures it out.

This isn’t perfect, but I love the bright blue jacket on Daniel, and I just love his smile and enthusiasm!

    • He seems to fully understand and appreciate just HOW fortunate he is.

    • StellaZafella

It’s nerd-ish, like a well dressed office temp who knows the systems but not the games…I think it’s cute as hell, but in the end, it’s the smile that sells it.
Besides, he’s got about 70 million reasons to smile like that from Harry Potter alone but he also genuinely demonstrates affection for his fans and his fame.

    • Kent Roby

I’m best friends with Danny and Parker Posey, and she told him to give a big ole fake smile next time he’s on the red carpet, or, um, uncut grass. Okay, I totally made that up.

  • Sobaika

I love him and I love the retro-ish feel of this suit. Show them how it’s done!

    • kimmeister

He needs to collect 3 more guys and start singing doo-wop songs.

      • One who’s arguably cuter than he is, one who’s sort of appealing in a hound-dog, dorky sort of way, and one whose father paid for the suits.

  • Diego!

    Harry Potter – University Edition.

He looks lovely! I love Daniel forever after portraying Harry Potter, he seems to be such a nice guy.
I agree with the collar of the shirt and the jacket, but it’s striking and catches attention. Well played Mr. Potter! 😉

    • Sobaika

Confession: I hated him as Harry. Flames-on-the-side-of-my-face type of hatred. But I adore him!! He seems like a genuinely nice and hard working person.

      • Rand Ortega

His best role: Himself on “Extras”. His attempts to chat up Dame Diana Rigg are stellar!

      • Vickiefantastico

I love me a good “Clue” reference. There was an article about that movie on Buzzfeed yesterday, and it made me look up the Madeleine Kahn scene on You Tube. Perfection!

  • MoHub

He’s beginning to look really creepy to me.

    • ankali

I’ve never seen him look like this before. He reminds me of those wooden characters you can find at carnivals or boardwalks, where the face is cut out and you put your face there instead? Like a knight and a maiden fair posed in tableau just waiting for you and your boyfriend to put your faces in there? Anyway, Daniel looks like he’s sticking his face in a cutout of himself.

  • Emily Giovanni

I sometimes get the feeling that Daniel here veered off his rightful course of going into banking or finance and accidentally got diverted to acting.

  • lrober03

I love the coordination of the shirt and the pocket piece.
    And the monkstrap shoes!
Actually I pretty much love each piece individually, and as a whole it’s pretty good

  • VictoriaDiNardo

Whoever selected the background set-up was really thoughtful about it. These pictures practically look like portraits. Such a nice change from those logo-heavy backdrops we usually see.

    • marlie

YES. I wouldn’t mind having the logos or sponsors on the backdrops *somewhere,* but maybe spaced out so there is some white/black space that can accurately show what the celeb is wearing.

  • alyce1213

This outfit makes him look like a smalltime TV sports announcer. He’s looked a lot better.

  • Jacquelyn

Love the color of the jacket. Man, Harry Potter grew up.

  • Zoey

I’m not convinced he has the coloring to be a movie star. He ALWAYS looks a little grey in the face to me.

    • seelebrennt

      that’s what makeup is for?

    • filmcricket

For the first HP movie (maybe the first two?) they put warm-toned filters on the lights because all the kids were so pale. Either the director or the DP referred to them as “milk bottles with shoes.”

  • formerlyAnon

Jury’s finally in. Gonna age well.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Considering he’s a recovering alcoholic I’d be careful with the drinking jokes but on topic I LOVE that blue jacket on him. Fit is a bit off and the collar is a little wonky but for a short guy those pants are hemmed perfectly! Question, are horizontal pocket squares a new men’s RC micro trend?

    • YoungSally

Agree with the recovering issues….he may well be one of those people who really isn’t comfortable in the spotlight and is still getting used to it…hence the “forced” happy. He’s working at it.

    • marlie

Nevermind. I answered my own question.

  • He should learn to slightly 3/4 angle his head so to better show off the nice line of his chin, but no other complaints. 15 points to Gryffindor.

  • clairellis

He could wear a potato sack and I’d love him.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I’m so happy he seems relatively adjusted and happy. He represented a character that is near and dear to an unfathomable number of people. That amount of pressure to live up to is enough to crack anybody

    • marlie

I also think that he, Emma Watson, and the rest of the Harry Potter series’ main child stars all had responsible, level-headed people behind them as they grew into adulthood, because you haven’t heard of any of them dealing with the problems that so many other child stars do as they get older. Not to say that none of them have issues, but none of the regular HP stars have had really public breakdowns.

      • Sobaika

I remember reading that Christopher Columbus (director for first two HP films & Home Alone) has such bad experiences with the Culkin family that he specifically sought out families who’d be more supportive.

  • MilaXX

That collar is making me twitch, but you’re right, Redmayne always looks like he wandered in off the street.

  • CeeQ

I love this whole get-up and especially love his attitude. He was Harry Potter for forever (and probably will be HP forever to some degree) and you would think that would mess with a person mightily but he seems genuinely grateful and happy with his life. Good for him =D

  • Therese Bohn

    Pete Campbell Blue!

  • Rand Ortega

Such a little honey pot. He’s a star. This is what stars do.

  • quiltrx

Really cute, and I love that he always puts all he’s got into that smile!
I’m wondering if the shirt collar was too large and he ‘gathered’ it with the tie? Only way I can figure that humpiness.

  • Just Me

I don’t love it. He is better looking than these pictures would have you believe. That being said, the color of the jacket is bringing out his eyes in the most delicious manner and he does look like he is more than ok with being at the event, which makes it a definite win in my eyes.

  • Imasewsure

He’s a strange looking kid… I think age and a little salt and pepper will help him tremendously. Nicely dapper and happy though which is much appreciated.

  • Corsetmaker

I’ve always thought the Harry Potter stars were incredibly lucky being surrounded from a young age by very, very experienced actors who had made their names on stage as much as on screen. Hard to get bratty when you’ve got Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman and co about.
He always seems like a nice chap 🙂

    • marlie

I just mentioned elsewhere that it’s also fortunate for them that they had responsible, level-headed people behind them as they grew up in front of the cameras. That makes a huge difference, as well.

  • Danielle

    Precious little muppet boy.

  • kirkyo

I think I dislike the choice of tie and pant color, but the fact that they almost exactly match the backdrop (and his hair) might be throwing me off.

    • Lucas

Ditto that. It’s a lovely shade of blue and the black makes it look…either depressing or boring, I’m not sure. But otherwise it’s a fine, presentable look. Other than the color I couldn’t say hardly a negative thing about it (Edit: Oh wait, I wish he had a belt on… haha).

  • MK03

I’ve decided I need to get my ass to the UK posthaste. So many cute guys (Dan, Simon Pegg, Dylan Moran, Martin Freeman, etc), so little time…

    • marlie

      Bitter Kitten road trip!

  • majorbedhead

He looks like a golf announcer. A very happy golf announcer.

  • flamingoNW

I don’t know. I liked Eddie Redmayne’s suit. They’re such different personalities. I think this is a bit dull. He is selling it, though.

    • marlie

I loved Eddie’s suit too, but Eddie himself wasn’t doing a darn thing to sell the look. Instead, he looked like he’d just just woken up, and was still half-asleep on the red carpet.

      • formerlyAnon

I’d disagree that he wasn’t selling it – I think that sleepy slouch was 100% calculated and was how he chose to sell it. (Mostly because he’s been in front of the cameras so often and obviously has at least the rudiments of posing down. Check out what comes up if you Google + images on his name.)

Now, Daniel Radcliffe’s approach might be more appealing to a lot of people . . .

        • marlie

I can see how it’s calculated, and it’s his “thing,” but ultimately, the final product is less than appealing to me. Some people like it, some don’t (me, being one of the latter).

        • marlie

Credit where it’s due: Eddie has always made way more of an effort than so many guystars who look like they haven’t even taken the time to bathe and groom themselves, and iron their clothes. SO while he’s not a favorite of mine, I do certainly appreciate that degree of effort.

          • Shawn EH

Eddie is lucky because he naturally has that sort of model pout that designers love. I’m sure he gets sent amazing clothes.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

He is wonderful. That Blue Jacket is killer!

  • Monday1900

I’d still give it to Eddie–I feel like this is an ill fitting costume from “How to Succeed in Business”. Also, that camera angle is doing him no favors–were these photos shot by a dwarf?

  • In Eddie’s (sort of) defense, I think he thinks he is selling those suits by giving us his version of blue steel. It’s awful though and evidence of taste issues.

  • mjude

    love him….always

  • bertkeeter

You’d thing the photographer could have shouted, “Daniel, fix your collar”?

  • FunButNutz

OK, so Radcliffe’s job is actor…not model. Edmayne is a far better actor than Radcliffe is. This is a relatively tiny part of what their job entails. I’m fine with Edmayne’s slouch.

    • demidaemon

Do you mean model? Because I would argue that Radcliffe is the better actor, personally.

  • Lucas

I don’t like the color combination 🙁 It’s a nice shade of blue, the fit is close enough, and the material looks fine, but the black really ruins it IMO. I’m not sure about the shirt he has on either, but that’s not really a biggie. Oh well! I still think he’s cute and I like him.

  • greyhoundgirl

Really like him but i wonder if this is a little too preppy? Blazer and all–I think it might make him look too kid-like.

  • Cathy S

He’s adorable. I love that jacket. Such a fabulous color. And look, he can stand up straight!

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Sparkly eyes and a million watt smile cover many, many sins. Even in jeans and a tee shirt he would be on a different level than 99% of the guys out there.

    • formerlyAnon

“Sparkly eyes and a million watt smile cover many, many sins.”

      Truer words never spoken.

  • decormaven

Great shade of blue on him. Praises for the happy star who knows it and shares that happiness with his fans.

  • ShaoLinKitten

I like the outfit but he always looks like an otherworldly imp to me, no matter what he’s wearing.

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

Sure he’s happy. He’s transitioned from child star to working as an actor as an adult. Kill Your Darlings has been getting good reviews from those few who’ve seen it so far. Plus all that Harry Potter money can’t be bad.

    • demidaemon

I’m actually really intrigued to see it. Also the possibility of seeing the subject of this post naked in bed with another man is also quite compelling.

  • lilyvonschtupp

He just looks so…..British….(not that that’s a bad thing)

  • conniemd

I actually like the blue jacket with the striped shirt. Hate the plain black tie, thought.

  • He knows how to turn it up when needed. Which is why he was so amazing on B’way. Guy’s got charisma in spades. Redmayne has, um, a hangover? pms? not sure but he always seems to have it.

  • stephbellard

He’s just…not that cute. Sorry Harry Potter fans. He’s always looked kinda lizardy to me.

    • NinjaCate

His face is just weird to me. I think it’s because I’m so accustomed to seeing it with glasses.

  • ♕ Natalie ♕

this is absolutely adorable! he looks great and the posture and smile really help!

  • carnush

I love this man. He’s building a fantastic career.

  • Luke Pacheco

I think he’s honestly that happy, you can see it in the eyes.. I’m not sure what’s going on with that collar… and I’d really like to see a different tie… but it’s a definitely workable look.

  • Shawn EH

Have he and Elijah Wood ever been seen in the same room together?

  • MannahattaMamma

let’s face it. he was a lovely teen-ager who has morphed into a rather odd looking man. Frodo-ish, is what I’m saying.
