Dakota Fanning in Elie Saab Couture at the Night Moves Premiere

Posted on September 30, 2013

It appears that, for the moment at least, Miss Dakota has overcome her crippling fear of color. Perhaps there was medication involved. Whatever the explanation for this sudden turnaround, we’re grateful.

Dakota Fanning attends the premiere of ‘Night Moves’ movie in Rio de Janeiro in an Elie Saab couture dress paired with a Rona Pfeiffer bangle and a Kimberly McDonald ring.

It’s not the color we would have picked for her if asked (a little too autumnal for her), but there’s no denying she looks pretty damn good in comparison to her usual “sweaty ghost” look. Kind of loving the cape. It’s so unexpected coming from her, who always struck as as someone who didn’t like to be dramatic in her dressing. You can’t get much more dramatic than a red gown with a cape.

Truth be told, she still looks a little sweaty, but her makeup is nice and the dress is a surprise (even if it’s somewhat standard, cape notwithstanding), so we’re calling this one an Attagirl. More of this, please. But try a winter color next time, dear.

still problematic. the dress is overwhelming her, the makeup doesn’t do anything with the hair she has. The fabric of the dress looks so heavy on her and yeah the color is all wrong.

  • It’s a pretty colour, it fits her, she’s wearing jewellery and lipcolour and I like her hair. Hard to argue with it, even if it is too warm a tone!

    • Lucas

I was going to add something similar after reading TLo’s commentary (I have to comment before I read their comments or else I will just agree with them!). I really DO like the color on her. I’m not sure how lighting and background are factoring into the effect but, that is a beautiful shade of red and I think it, along with the gown, gives her a very serene aura.

    • conniemd

I don’t like the color on her, it looks much better on the dark-haired model. It’s more of a rust red than red, and that’s not a color that looks good on blondes. She would look fab in a royal blue or emerald green or teal. As an aside, Elie Saab sure knows how to make dresses that make women loook beautiful.

  • Jessica Freeman

I think it’s a lovely color on her, just too bad its too much dress. And at least she has identifiable make up on, which is a big step for her.

  • majorbedhead

Does no one in her entourage own blotting paper or matte powder? She’s always so shiny. I can understand looking like that when she’s out and about, but on the red carpet? Someone needs to fix that.

  • teensmom99

Improvement but a dress like that needs more jewelry. She looks like it’s someone else’s dress . . .

    • anneland

      It’s crying out for earrings.

  • Tatiana Luján

The makeup she’s wearing is the wrong shade for her skin. She picked up makeup with cooper undertones, but her skin has blue undertones.
    I really like the dress.

    • retrogal9

As a very pale blue-toned lady, I can attest to how impossible it is to find foundation makeup that’s pale enough and blue enough. But she has professionals helping her…

      • Rhonda Shore

Chanel sell a white (“le blanc de Chanel”) that you put underneath foundation, gets rid of the redness w/o looking like a clown white…it’s quite subtle and a lovely texture.

      • Tatiana Luján

Yes, finding the righ foundation can be tricky, but the blush and lipstick are rather easy.

      • pookiesmom

How do you even know such things? I’m super pale but have NO idea what my undertones are. I swear, I suck at being a girl sometimes.

  • CT14

Not loving her hair. She’s copying the model, but I think she needs more fullness or something.

Overall, though, brava! Color is your friend!

  • filmcricket

It’s a gorgeous dress, but it’s a bit too much for her wee self. And her head looks almost unfinished in combination. Glad to see colour, but it’s a shame the dress isn’t actually that cherry shade in the runway pic, I think that would suit her better.

    • 3boysful

Good way to articulate it–head looking unfinished!

  • KayEmWhy

Better makeup and hair would have definitely made this look chic.

  • GillianHolroyd

Agree that the color is too warm for her but seeing that 3/4 view, the fit is impressive.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I don’t love this dress on a matching red carpet, but she does look really nice. I just wish she’d chosen more interesting jewelry. It also seems a bit much for a non-blockbuster movie premiere, but that’s just me, I think.

  • rkdgal

“Sweaty ghost” — you guys slay me! I’m really thinking that my mom’s old “Color Me Beautiful” book needs to be dusted off and passed around Hollywood stylist conventions. Egads, it’s not hard to figure out what colors look best with your coloring, folks.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

My mom had that book, too!

  • Contralto

I love that color. Slap some sleeves on that thing and I would wear the hell out of it.

  • decormaven

I love this color so much, I’ll gloss over whether or not it’s the right shade for her. This is a big step ahead for her, from where I sit.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Love the fit but the color… I’m not ready for the Holidays yet celebs… please stop with the Christmas dresses! And are The Sisters Fanning allergic to powder? Always so sweaty!

  • Kathy_Marlow

That is so weird, in the photo of the model, it looks a blue-red (which reads winter to me) but in the pics with Dakota, it’s a yellow-red (which does read autumnal). Different dye lots? Different lighting? So funny how that affects things.

  • It’s progress, I’ll take it. Also, this is the first time I feel she’s looked her age.

  • altissima

Is it just me, or does it look as though she is being pulled backwards from the shoulders by tha cape?

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She should become a brunette full time, I can’t help thinking she would have looked stunningly beautiful with a darker, richer color of hair.

And without the sweaty face, but that’s another fight to fight.

  • Ginny Ellsworth

She is wearing make up and her hair is styled. The dress isn’t lace, see through or showing granny panties. All wins in my opinion! This is the best I’ve seen her look.

  • ThaliaMenninger

On my screen, the dress looks like it’s a rust color on Miss Fanning, but a dark cherry red on the model. The runway color is so much nicer.

  • Not applicable

not the right color maybe (for her) but the dress is very flattering. we’re all nit-picking- she looks pretty.

  • DesertDweller79

Wow, this color would be perfect for me. Who wants to make me a knockoff of this dress? LOL Minus the cape which, as Edna Mode told us, is a no-no.

She looks pretty, and I am glad to see her wearing a color.

  • Lucas

Beautiful!! I wish she had done something else with the hair and makeup, but regardless, I think its a stunning dress and she looks stunning in it.

  • Vaniljekjeks

She needs a bucket of translucent powder, a darker eye and a less matchy lip, and she’d be perfect.

  • MilaXX

Definitely a step in the right direction. The dress is to long, the hair is not becoming and as usual she looks in need of blotting tissue, but it’s color and she looks like a grown up.

  • Shawn EH

She still looks like a vampire who wants to kill me.

  • almondemy

it looks a little debuntante to me

  • DTLAFamilies

Too mature. If you can picture Jane Fonda wearing the same dress, it’s time to pick something else.

  • Sam Smith

I don’t dislike this look, but to me she looks like she is playing dress up. Meaning dress is too much or too “mature” for Dakota.

  • Janet B

Not a perfect attempt, but I’m happy to see she’s trying a different look.

  • marlie

I think she looks lovely. The dress is really pretty, and I like her makeup. Sure, it’s a little shiny, as it always is, but I still think she looks great, overall.

  • Danielle

I can get behind this. At least it’s not the color of old bras.

  • quiltrx

Wow, the lighting is REALLY severe at this event! I actually like the color on her–would be perfect I think if a little more to the purple side of red and a little less to the orange-y side. Definitely a step in the right direction for her–she looks really pretty and confident.

  • mhleta

I could die in that dress. She could have gone full on Veronica Lake here and it would have made people totally rethink her as an actress. It’s a really gorgeous gown but she needs to catch up to it a little.

  • Sunraya

Shiny, shiny, shiny. With all of their resources, why can’t these girls get that shine off of their faces?? I have never seen anything like it!! It distracts from everything.

  • Sunraya

OT – This keeps bugging me – what Fanning was in “The Closer”? She did a good job, whichever one it was.

  • formerlyAnon

Love the cape, looks good in the dress (would like it better if there were less of it pooling on the floor) but the perfectly nice makeup seems just a tad underdone for the dress.

  • VicD

SHE IS WEARING A COLOR! Sorry to get so shouty, but, seriously, a color!!!

  • NC_Meg

She did something with her hair so I can’t complain. The dress is gorgeous, too. I think she look great.

  • Bethany Mavronicles

“Sweaty ghost.” I am going to find a way to use that in conversation today.

  • HM3

This is frustrating. Why does the color look so much more pink/purpleish in the model pic? THAT would have been a fine color. “In person,” however (as intimate as that can get with a million flashes aimed at it), it translates into an autumnal tone.
    Dakota, I’d be annoyed, too.

  • Synnae

I like the colour, I just think it is not the right colour for her. She needs a cooler red.

Also, while the dress itself is gorgeous, if a bit traditional at least from the front, it does seem like an awful lot of dress on her. So I wouldn’t give her an Attagirl yet but consider it a move in the right direction, to be further fine-tuned.

  • H2olovngrl

    Desperately needing jewelry here

  • Jacquelyn

it’s not her color but it is nice to see a change.

  • She still looks pretty scared, though!

  • That is an Oscar-worthy dress. I would love to see someone like Penelope Cruz take this and OWN it.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

Ooh I dunno. She looks like a gal at prom who doesn’t usually wear dresses and gets embarrassed when people look at her.

  • ShaoLinKitten

She always looks a bit shiny to me, and the color of this dress makes her look like she’s melting into the carpet, but A for effort!

  • steeg of their own

It’s a nice color, and I applaud her for stepping outside her comfort zone, but it’s about a decade too old for her. I think she’s having trouble with the awkward not-quite-a-child-star, not-quite-an-established-adult-actress line.

  • hmatz

Personally, I think the dress looks too old for her. It is weighing her down, both with the color and the shape. She looks like she’s playing dress up in her mother’s fancy clothes: they’re pretty, but they don’t quite fit her correctly.

  • twilightgirlportland.com

The dress is nice. A bit heavy looking. She does look a bit sweaty. She just needs her red eyes to finish it off.

  • BuffaloBarbara

You know, I think I’d love this on her in a royal blue.

But someone needs to get some powder on her face before the cameras get there.

  • Aaminah Khan

Now, if only she could overcome her crippling fear of makeup.

  • She looks like a different person when she’s wearing colour. Omigoodness, I love this dress.
