Claire Danes in Armani Privé at the 2013 Emmy Awards

Posted on September 23, 2013

We don’t pay too much attention to the red carpet chatter after an awards show; not until we’ve had a chance to form and state our own opinions. But we got a vague sense that people seemed to like this look and for the life of us, we can’t figure out why.

“Homeland” star Claire Danes attends the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California in an Armani Privé dress paired with Neil Lane jewelry.

Armani Privé Fall 2013 Collection

Honestly, we think the whole look is awful. That hair seems to add about ten years to her age. Worse, such a prim, sensible hairstyle is completely at odds with the plunging, filmy, nearly-naked bodice just below it. And that’s probably our main problem here. This is a super-sexy, look-at-me kind of dress and she’s so very not that kind of girl. These pictures don’t convey how awful she looked lumbering across the stage in this thing. Her whole appeal is that she comes off as sensitive, no-nonsense, and highly intelligent. That kind of persona doesn’t really know what to do with a “check out my tits” dress. This isn’t to say she’s not or can’t be sexy; just that this kind of sexy doesn’t suit her and she doesn’t know what to do with it. You just barely have your nipples covered and you’re going with anchorwoman hair, clean eyes, and sensible diamond studs in your ears? Girl, no.

Besides, it’s entirely too colorless and the disco bodice seems to have nothing to do with the romantic princess skirt below it. Just an odd look all around. “Listen to me” on the top, “do me” in the middle, and “marry me” on the bottom.

I just desperately want to take the straps up on these types of dresses. I loathe them and think they are horribly unflattering.

  • Mariah J

GOD no…this is all figure skater on top, BAD figure skater.

  • quiltrx

It’s a shame–the *idea* of the dress is lovely. If you describe it to me–rhinestone straps, shell-ish paillettes on the bodice, slightly-shimmery lace on the skirt–it sounds SO pretty. But it’s SO not.
And her hair is making me weep, as is her makeup. If there were ever a time for 20s fingerwave look, this is it. Sadly, this is a fail.

Like Betty Draper’s sad sister. That dress makes me sad. Such talent deserves better stylist.

  • GTrain

It makes her boobs look so flat and droopy. So distracting I didn’t even notice the rest of the dress.

  • Jacob Bowen

If they hiked up the top of the dress 5 inches it would look SO much better!!!!!!!!

    • Damien W

Yes — it all just looks like someone is underneath her, trying to tug the dress down.

  • ItsDicey

She has sad boobs and matronly hair.

    Best critque yet T&L.

the anchorwoman hair and this comment below that you wrote had me rolling on the floor laughing
“Listen to me” on the top, “do me” in the middle, and “marry me” on the bottom.

Oh, thank god, I was sitting here stunned that it seemed this opportunity had been wasted.

  • Diego!

Sad tits on the red carpet, 2013 edition. I hate everything here, Claire, you can do better than this!

  • Claire and Julie Bowen must make a pact — no more plunging, scary-sternum showing dresses until they eat a sandwich. Or four.

  • demidaemon

How passionately? Let us have it!

It’s a pretty dress, in abstraction. Oftentimes we respond to the dress but not the whole look. In this case the sum of its parts is not good. On a different girl with different styling (and proper support, natch) this could work. But not on Miss Claire here, in her current incarnation.

I too believe in the maxim of using a smaller amount of words to convey stronger meaning.

  • demidaemon

It’s too bad Zosia Mamet had them beat before she even left the house.

  • demidaemon

She didn’t! That went to Christina Hendricks. I don’t remember if Claire made the top three or not.

I do agree on the WOC comment though, as if you read the thoughts from my mind. I don’t get why celebs often dress themselves in colors near or matching their skin tone. Obviously, you want to look like you are wearing the Emperor’s new clothes on possibly the biggest night of your career/year. It makes perfect sense! (rolls eyes)

  • the fashion police hated it, though. worst dressed nominee.

  • berlinmama

    pull up dem straps, babe!

  • Mojone

That dress looked awful on the runway model too. It was designed for someone like Sofia Vergara.
