Cate Blanchett in Givenchy at the Blue Jasmine UK Premiere

Posted on September 18, 2013

Here’s your shot of style to get your day started. It’s like espresso, but more fabulous.

Cate Blanchett attends the UK premiere of “Blue Jasmine” at Odeon West End in London in a Givenchy couture dress.

Givenchy Couture Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Grace Mahary (WM)

Oh, you are a creature, Cate. A creature of FASHION. Who else could wear a … boob cape, we guess – and manage to look fabulous doing it? We’re not even a hundred percent convinced we like the dress (it’s wonky at the bust and neckline), but she sure as hell knows what to do with it.

We’re sorry to say, it needs an up ‘do, though. We’re a little surprised at that stumble.

    Praise Cate.

  • Jaime

She’s so pretty. Even when her ears stick out, they’re like delicate little wings. She’s the archetypal “paper bag” woman…

    • VioletFem

What is a paper bag woman?

      • Jaime

It means she can wear *anything* and make it look good, even a paper bag.

        • VioletFem

Oh that makes sense. My brain is not working at full capacity yet.

  • She leaves that model in her sparkling, magic Kate dust.

  • Adrianna Grężak

    I’m guessing she wasn’t hailing a taxi that night…

    • Gurl has minions for that sort of ordinary nonsense.

      • willworktomorrow

Again, minions for that. (referring to nose scratching and pottying below)

    • Spicytomato1

Or doing much of anything us mere mortals are required to do. What if her nose itched?

      • RedRaven617

Or worse. How do you handle the call of nature in a dress like that?

  • SewingSiren

This is capital F . Who the hell cares if I can’t move my arms.

  • I has frustration.
The fit could be a better in the body. Keep it sleek.
The neckline is frumpy and half-assed. A much more delicate knot, would have been sublime.
The back is unfinished looking. Yes, the dress is spectacular from the front, but it’s not for a photo.
Her was completely neglecting, since no one seemed to know what to do with it.

This was such a great idea, but the execution is really just resting on the fact that it’s Cate. She deserved a fully realized expression of artistic thought.

    • filmcricket

      Agreed on all fronts.

    • Frumpy is the word. It’s ghastly.

    • NoveltyRocker

Yes, a softer, smaller knot, or none at all, would have made this feel so much more effortless and let the eye rest more easily on the great detail below. I kind of love the dramatic swooping in the back but it could be mostly to do with her beautiful shoulders.

  • Scimommy

    That is one fabulous straightjacket.

  • This is stunning. SHE is stunning. I hope those shoes have hidden wheels in them, though, because I can’t imagine walking in that dress is possible.

Oh, who am I kidding? She probably levitates wherever she goes.

  • Diego!

I agree guys, she is rocking the hell out of this dress but her hair is too flat IMHO. But does she not look fantastic?

  • Telperion

This should not work, especially the visual I keep getting of her arms being squeezed but it’s Cate. So it works. She is just so fabulous.

  • clairellis

I loathe that dress and yet she looks magnificent.

    • SugarSnap108

      She elevates everything.

  • elemspbee

guess its still Brit day at T’Lo’s. thank you for this. cuz yesterday ended so flatly.

    • Aaminah Khan

You know she’s Australian, not British, right?

I mean, I know we only federated in 1901 so maybe the news hasn’t spread, but we’re our own country now and everything.

      • elemspbee

Apologies. Inherited colonial amnesia. Didn’t know KB is Australian.

  • Miranda

She’d be regal in a square dancing frock. Love her.

  • styrch

She’s Galadriel. She can probably get away with anything because she always looks like she knows more than she’s letting on.

  • RussellH88

There should be a law that Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton are not to be within 500 feet of each other out of fear that the sheer amount of fabulous will create a rip in time and space.

    • H3ff

It’s not a law ordained by man, but a law of PHYSICS, one that both Cate and SWINTON know well. Have you ever seen those two on the same red carpet, let alone film?

      • RussellH88

I also have a theory that if Tilda Swinton and Grace Jones ever touch, they would completely null each other out and disappear from existence.

  • boweryboy

I hate the dress, but I like the silhouette. It’s similar to that fabulous pink dress she wore a while back.

Also, have I been living under a rock? When did Cate suddenly become Tilda level fashion fabulous?

    • kimmeister

Cate’s fabulousness is far from sudden.

  • homofascist

She always makes those complicated Givenchy looks sing. Praise her indeed.

  • Leah

Finally, something that looks better on the celeb than on the model! Loves me some Cate!

  • Tanya Wade

Her back is a work of art. Her back! Also, I think she could have rocked the blindfold.

  • I love Kate, but this dress is ugly. The slope around her boobs and shoulders is a bad shape for anyone and that wide belt or bling is silly. I usually agree with you guys at least in part. This is ugly. It does not flatter her back either. It looks better with the mask so that the wearer can hide.

  • Laura Renee

Brb loling forever at “boob cape”

I love it too, but I’d like to see how she moves her arms.

  • jenuwefa

    Can she lift her arms?

  • par3182

Side boob is so 2012; we now have….what would you call that?

    • kimmeister

Underarm swell. I wish the thing were hoiked up an inch and a half to avoid showing it.

      • Aurumgirl

Or you can just call them breast “spares” or “precursors”.

  • Chuck Barthelme

I agree on the hair. But otherwise, usual Cate fabulousness.

  • lobsterlen

I like the boob cape dress but can you sit or eat in that dress?

  • decormaven

I wonder if more detail could be seen if the arms were more open. I’d love to get a closer look at that bronze beading. Oh, for an updo and some earrings! This just needed a few touches; but for one with a PhD in fashion, she’s rising above the petty details.

  • Lily-Rygh

  • mjude

    BOWING DOWN. luv her

  • Judy_S

Now I can put the coffee on.

  • Hermione

Sorry, guys. I think the whole look is terrible. The neckline creeps me out because it looks like a noose. The fit is off at the neck-shoulder-line also, and would be even worse if she would dare to move her arms. The dress only works at all if she stands stock still. What’s under the cape? Can it be swept up and back somehow to reveal the bodice? Her hair is blah and her makeup looks odd and unflattering. She looks more like an unattractive version of Claire Danes than herself.

  • Divina!

  • veleri

    d i v i n e.

  • Danielle

  • procrastinatrice

I can’t with the back of that dress. Nope. Not even for Cate.

  • Jacquelyn

It wasn’t so bad when I was looking at the front but that back is kinda crazy.

  • cocohall

I feel like I’m in church and a very fashion forward nun has just appeared.

    • Fannie Wolston

nay you acolyte, that is the vestament of a High Priestess!

  • Jaeda Laurez

I get it. But I don’t like it. It looks better on her than it would on most of us, but that’s not really any consolation.

  • Garcia Loca

All shall love her and despair.

  • StellaZafella

I’m in the minority here, but I have no problem with the hair…it’s clean, sleek and, ultimately Cate.
But I do get twitchy around any “fashion” that disallows normal limb movement. This dress CAN’T move well because any arm placement other than straight to the sides ruins the line…it’s fashion, but it’s not good fashion.

  • formerlyAnon

As she matures and the bones in her face become a tiny bit more prominent, I’m starting to feel all the enthusiasm for her face that I never did in the ’90s when people gushed and all I could think was “well, yes, she is quite attractive, but what’s the big deal.”

I’m disappointed in the neckline and the back view, as well as the too-casual hair. This could have been a lot more impressive, I’m going to have to say it’s “interesting.”

  • MilaXX

LOL, it’s as they say, a very editorial look and Cate knows how to work it, but I can’t help feeling it’s a bit straight jacket-y.

  • valerie747

Cate often out models the models. Brilliant. The movie, ‘Blue Jasmine’ is Cate’s best performance yet. And, that’s saying something.

  • kikisayshi

I was thinking the same thing – WTF with the diagonal-boob cleavage? But she is stunning anyway.

  • Chaiaiai

I am CONVINCED that Cate’s best feature is her posture. DAMN. that’s how you do it, you swizzle of Aussie fabulousness.

  • marlie

I *LOVE* this. This gown looks incredible on her. And her hair and makeup are lovely; I don’t even mind the ‘do with the halter neck.

    • conniemd

At least she had the sense to tuck her hair behind her ears so that the neckline and full fashion is revealed.

      • marlie

At least on her right side, it looks like her hair was pinned back, so I’m assuming that it’s intentional.

  • lucyloo222

How does she move her arms?

  • DTLAFamilies

    Dracula Droopy Tits.

  • CeeQ

I guess it’s how you wear it but even I, Blanchett Enthusiast, can’t get behind this dress. Although: she’s way better with eyebrows on so that’s a plus =D

  • CatherineRhodes

Couture or not, that dress design is stupid. Is the wearer not supposed to use her arms the entire evening?

    • snarkykitten

what for? she has minions to do everything for her

  • Dan_In_NYC

I’ll take Advanced Dress Wearers for $2000, Alex.

  • GillianHolroyd

No. That dress is dragging her down; she’s imprisoned. Free Cate!!!

  • conniemd

2nd picture from the bottom she has that Galadriel “I know everything and I see right into you look.” She is fabulosity defined.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I love this and I hate this all at the same time. She is working it though.

  • Victoria

Why is it every time I see her, I think Cate, Tilda, and Anna Torv must come from some kind of magical faire-elven land?

  • snarkykitten

I hate it and at the same time, she looks radiant. Galadriel is messing with my brain hard core.

  • Imasewsure

    I’m not fashionable… and I really don’t like it. Different I guess but….

  • Lilak

I shouldn’t like this, but really, the only thing that bothers me is the gown’s chestal region: I prefer the slightly undulating drape on the model (Cate’s looks merely puckered). The fabric looping at the collar is arranged about the same on both — is it that Cate’s chest has slightly more ‘volume’?

(A minor thing, but Tisci’s stuff–in real life–so often stands or falls on the little things.)

  • Shawn EH

At least her eyebrows are back! Boob cape, yes!

  • madscntst

Not that one would wear this dress for a day at the office, but wouldn’t the drag on your arms get a little annoying after a while? Wouldn’t you just be tempted to hike the cape up and fling it behind you? Or would that completely uncover the girls?

  • Aurumgirl

That dress is just goofy. It restricts like a torture device, and yet they’ve cut in slits in the back, on both the restrictor and the skirt. Because you need to be able to run, I guess.

  • LaSylphide

How does she reach the baked beans down from the top shelf?

  • judybrowni

Well, if you like armpit boobs, I guess…

  • E. D.

Don’t mind the hair, but this needs some topaz earrings.

  • quiltrx

I think it’s super-fabulous from the elbows down. It’s like they designed that part, then had to figure out how to get it to stay on the body. “I know, we’ll hang it from a noose so her boobs are kind of in a sack.”

    • sojourneryouth

Yeah, my problem is that the cape-y part starts so low down, it makes everything, including her boobs, look heavier and droopier than they are. If fabulous Cate can’t make this work, no one can.

  • melanie0866

Weird. What if she wants to use her arms?

I wish she and Tilda Swinton would play sisters in some movie. And that Cate would teach Tilda to wear just a little makeup on the red carpet.

  • Ronni H.

The boob cape is weird, and it kind of looks like an antique rug or something. Plus, what would she do if she had to go to the bathroom?

  • BrooklynBomber

“Boob cape.” A reminder always to see how a garment looks from the back before you wear it outside.

  • She really likes the wonky cape/overlay/drape thing these days.

  • DesertDweller79

She totally can’t move her arms, right? I mean more than a tiny bit near her wrist. That is crazy. She looks good, but…. really?

  • Judih1

Needs an elborate updo and her roots need a touch up I think she needs a new hair color

  • Lulu

Poor Hubert, it has to suck to see bad design go out there with your name on it. When he said “drape” he did not mean those things we took our high school senior photos in.

  • Trickytrisha

Yup, that look requires serious hair to go with the serious dress, which I actually love as a piece of art, not as a practical garment.

  • CKMia

It totally needs a tight, clean, low chignon. The look is screaming for a smaller head to let the awesomeness/horror of the dress take center stage.

  • OooOoOoOOo! Love it.

  • joything

Anyone who could rock Elizabethan couture in the “Elizabeth” movies knows what to do with a boob cape. LUV HUH!

  • María José Benites Peralta

It is unusual but I like it. Plus Cate is beautiful and can make anything look good.

  • Pterodactyl111

I want to see her lift her arms up.

    • I was thinking the exact same thing, then thinking about the zombies dancing in Thriller.

  • e jerry powell

I agree about the hair needed to be up.

I actually think that this look is a bit upmarket for a movie premiere, though. This is the kind of thing I’d expect to see at a serious high-society fundraiser. That doesn’t make it a bad look, though.

  • Sweetvegan

You’d have to go around all day with your arms hanging straight from your sides. And it would be worth it.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Very nice. A couple of pieces of jewelry would have been nice.
