Cate Blanchett in Christian Dior Couture at the Blue Jasmine Premiere

Posted on September 03, 2013

Cate Blanchett attends the premiere of “Blue Jasmine” during the 2013 Deauville American Festival in Deauville, France in a Christian Dior couture gown.

Christian Dior Fall 2013 Couture Collection

Oh, we know we’re going to be on the receiving end of a metric shit-tonne of disagreement on this one, but we don’t care. We love that Cate wears off-the-beaten path so effortlessly and consistently. It’s like a Girl Scout gown for the Girl Scout who gets all the most fabulous merit badges.

  • annie_wonder

    HATE. Sorry Cate.

  • alyce1213

It’s Blue Ivy’s little outfit as a dress, except not owls.

    • charlotte

      I thought the same thing!

  • seelebrennt

i’d be so happy i could eat and drink all night and never have to worry about sucking in. also, happy i wouldn’t have to shave my legs.

    • random_poster

You could also wear flip flops or Chucks, or even be barefoot!

      • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I am hoping Cate is secretly wearing Crocs under this dress, just to be an anarchist.

        • kimmeister

She appears to have Pink Panthers on her feet.

  • Stephanie Holmgren Swanson

If Girl Scouts had let us look that fabulous, I would have stuck with it! She just transforms anything she wears, this would look heavy and odd on most others.

  • lexilexi

No one else would get away with that gym hair. It’s too long, just “ok” for me… but I do love your Girl Scout gown descriptor.

    • gabbilevy

My goodness I wish my hair looked like that after the gym…

      • kimmeister

No kidding. After working out, my hair looks like Einstein in the middle of a thunderstorm.

  • Glam Dixie

Wowza! I’d like it more if it didn’t look like she was smuggleing in everything but the kitchen sink under there, but even so she manages to look lovely. I kinda dig it.

  • In_Stitches

It looks like a bunch of coasters glued to a funereal maternity dress.

  • Jacquelyn

I wonder if I’d like it more if there wasn’t so much of it? Like it if it had been chopped off at the knees..

    • Monabel

No, that would be a fatal failure of nerve.

  • Nancer

This reminds me of an afghan that my Grandmother crocheted for me.

    • In_Stitches

That’s what it is! I knew it seemed familiar. Spot on.

      • Nancer

Thanks! To be fair, I always DID love that afghan…. :]

    • makeityourself

It was a family friend who made mine for a gift as I went off to college. Still have it stashed away somewhere. Can’t throw it out or donate it; won’t put it on my sofa “Roseanne”-style, so it sits in a closet somewhere.

      • Nancer

Mine is on the bed in the spare bedroom. I won’t ever get rid of it – it’s a prized possession!

  • Lovelovelovelovelove.

  • formerlyAnon

I LOVE this. If she had something bold on one of her wrists I’d call it a WERQ.

  • Judih1

Girl Scout caftan. While I applaud that she takes risks, this one is a miss. And so if her hair

  • LuisaNL

    LOVE IT!

  • Danielle

It reminds me of the blanket on the back of Roseanne’s couch, but everything from the neck up is glorious.

  • amanda siegelson

i actually like the hair… but i think that is one fuggly dress. and not even the great cate can save it.

  • SewingSiren

I’m on the same page as you. But I’m seeing the afghan that my mother crochet many years ago. I love that afghan and all the work that went into it and I love this dress too. Fashion isn’t all about showing everyone your body, and Cate knows it.

  • shirab

The bra strap! The visible bra strap is killing me.

    • kimmeister

Even dresses from Ann Taylor manage to have the bra strap snaps to keep them from showing in sleeveless dresses. I guess Dior doesn’t do that (or thinks that women go braless).

      * On a side note, I went on a rampage and sewed in bra strap snaps into a bunch of my sleeveless dresses this summer. I was bummed that you can’t buy them at the fabric store premade. Sewing tiny snap buttons onto tiny ribbons is a pain in the butt!

      • SugarSnap108

or thinks that women go braless

And/or thinks they are boobless? Many designers seem to be under that impression.

        • marlie

Remember Oliver/Olivier/whateverhisnamewas from Project Runway a couple of seasons back who lamented that he hated designing for “real women” because they have breasts? THIS.

          • SugarSnap108

Ah, so they’re aware we often have breasts – They’re just annoyed by them.

  • Karen Belgrad

That reminds me… I need to buy wrapping paper (for every occasion).

  • lobsterlen

I love it. The colorful print reminds of the images you see in a kaleidoscope … a kaleidoscope gown.

    • kimmeister

Yes, a kaleidoscope! Or colorful sand dollars, or fancy frosting on cupcakes.

      • ballerinawithagun

  • sagecreek

I’m okay with it except for the weirdly placed pocket in the penultimate picture.

    • kimmeister

I had to scroll back up to look. What the heck??? That is bizarre. It’s like they’re supposed to double as opera length gloves.

  • Donna Tabor

The perfect summer dress: covers everything, touches nothing. Looks exceedingly comfortable.

  • Katie Wolf

    Amazing-complete-glorious LOVE!

  • hmariec19

Ugh, of course she can wear it, she’s like 8 and a half feet tall.

  • pattyw

I’m on the fence. I think it’s a bold and unusual choice (and I’d love a closer look at the shoes). I also think the model is wearing it better, giving it more of the look of a column dress with a train and creating a slimming shape.

  • Constant Reader

The designs on the dress immediately brought to mind those granny circles the wretched Angela put on everything in that one season of PR. Which made me remember Angela and how annoyingly passive-aggressive she was. Which is the long way of saying that my dislike of this dress may be entirely irrational.

  • Diego!

Pregnant Laura Ingalls goes to France… Sorry guys but this ‘dress’ looks like table-clothes. No Cate, no! Hair and make up are flawless as always tough 🙂

  • hughman

“We are each and every one of us very very special, Maria.”

    “Like snowflakes, Mother Superior?”

“Well… more like the designs on Cate Blanchett’s red carpet gown. But you get the idea. Now get back to those goddamn kids!”

    • Wendi126

Now that’s just goddamn amusing. Funny too

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

“It’s like a Girl Scout gown for the Girl Scout who gets all the most fabulous merit badges.” And I say AMEN to that.

I loved it too, it reminded me of the time Tilda wore that white “egg-shaped” Céline suit.

    God, I love those bitches!

  • Juliette Dade

Oh my gosh…she’s wearing Grandma’s quilt!!! Love it!

  • PeggyOC

Full on love. It looks comfy and fabulous. Comfabulous.

  • mommyca

i love too! my only disappointment? that we cannot fully see what it appears to be some fabulous shoes!

    • alyce1213

I know. There’s a peek of something amazing in picture #5. I wanna see the whole shoe!

  • Michael_Jones

Is Cate the only woman in the world who can make “fleurchons” work?

    • Rand Ortega

You just made Angela Keslar suicidal w/ 1 sentence.

      • Shawn EH

        Jubilee Jumbles!

  • CeeQ

I like the pattern but I can’t really say that this is very flattering….
from the neck up, she’s luminous =D

  • Jessica Freeman

I actually wished she would have worn the shape of the one on the model. It appears to be more of a column with some sort of a train…this is just a huge, expensive muumuu.

  • SugarSnap108

I could’ve gotten down with the whimsy of the Girl Scout merit badges (at least on Cate). But the side view killed it for me — Is that a weird under-the-boob pocket for the left hand only?

  • Imasewsure

Love this girl scout dress (guess it would be a “girl guides” dress for Cate) but I can’t imagine trying to walk in it without tripping.

  • Betsy

I LOVE this dress, and the whole look. It’s SUMMER, for God’s sake! And it’s HOT — weather, that is. This is a lovely, colorful (but not TOO colorful) addition to the red carpet. Simple and elegant. And fun at the same time. Go, Cate!

  • Does anyone know if this is a print, or if the design is embroidered?

    • Janice Bartels

I’m wondering the same thing! And if it is couture, does that make it hand-embroidered?

      • Janice Bartels

Looked it up- it is embroidered and not a print.

  • Miss WKS

    She’s amazing.
    The gown is amazing.
    Dior is amazing.

  • KingCrazy

Nope, sorry. It’s an ugly dress. She can pull off a lot of weird shit, but this is just ugly.

  • Chuck Barthelme

I’m so in love with her these days I don’t even care what she’s wearing. This is a little weird, but she’s pulling it off. Pulling off weird looks no one else could is Cate’s “of course.”

  • MilaXX

I like it. It’s the kind of dress I’d wear in the middle of a heatwave when I no longer care about defining a waist and just want to be cool & not have clothes sticking to me.

  • joanna dash

Huh! Now I know what happened to the spirograph drawings I *thought* I had hidden in a drawer somewhere.

  • Dan_In_NYC

It’s a no on the dress, but she is fab in Blue Jasmine.

  • flamingoNW

I agree. I think it works. She looks fab!

  • Shawn EH

If you’ve seen the movie, that looks sort of like something her sister might have made. She’s working it, I can’t deny that.

  • Tatiana Luján

I love it, not everything needs to be fitted. Her arms and her skin look great and the dress looks fun.

    • Adriana_Paula

THANK you! We all know she’s slim, there’s no need for her to wear silhouettes that prove it every time she leaves the house. I love this look.

      • demidaemon

After reading everyone’s comments, I think a less fitted silhouette could work, but perhaps not in this particular shape.

  • Anathema_Device

Only Cate could work a California king quilt this fabulously.

  • OffToSeeHim

I think there’s a reason the model is holding her arms tight to her sides. It looks better without the material blooming out just under the breasts.

    • broke&fashionable

Agreed. I was thinking if the fit was more like the model I would be totally sold. Didn’t consider that it was just strategic arm placement.

  • sk8tfan

She looks like an idiot. It reminds me of the version of the Nutcracker where Mother Goose comes onstage in an oversized dress and all the little kids are hiding underneath it.

  • amber.

  • paginatrix

Just (heart) this SO MUCH! Stunning.

  • marlie

This is an “OF COURSE” in the best possible way. I think she looks outstanding in this. It has an interesting silhouette, and she rightly went very simple with the hair and makeup for this look. LOVE.

  • Jennelle

And she can eat a metric tonne of cheeseburgers and still look fabulous in that dress…love the merit badge comment!!

  • Sara__B

I like this a lot. If the gown had been shortened just a bit, so the front hem didn’t drag on the the carpet, it would have been perfect.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Love it. Love that she wore it, love that she can hit the buffet without worrying about bloat.

  • KayEmWhy

    LOVE IT!!!!!!!

  • LaSylphide

Sorry, i can’t get behind this one. While i appreciate that she takes (lots and lots of) chances, this one just misses. Too voluminous – presumably that’s on purpose, and not just a poor fit – and her bra strap is showing in a few shots. Interesting, but not a winner.

  • Valdri8

I saw this over the weekend, and was totally spellbound by its kickassedness. Too bad it is a little too long.

  • majorbedhead

Nope, I looked again, and I really don’t like it.

  • Heather

It reminds me of a little machine they used to sell on infomercials in the 80s that made little crocheted rounds, which you could then supposedly sew into afghans, etc. Does anyone remember what it was called? Same era as the Vitamix, Ginsu knives, etc.

  • jjtxgrrl

OH. I love it. But I tend to favor the unconventional stuff she wears!!

  • MaggieMae

I want to like it more than I do. The way the model is posing, the dress has more shape. I like it a lot less in motion on Cate on the RC.

  • Lilak

If I got the feeling she was really confident with this, I’d say woo-hoo … but there’s just a little whiff of self-consciousness in most of the photos I’ve seen. It probably works only if you’re 100% committed to it.

  • Qitkat

Of course, Cate Blanchett would pick this. But it is still a granny’s flower garden quilt. After granny had too much to drink and had feverish nightmares, woke up and frantically transcribed her dreams into design. I might actually like it in a smaller dose.

    • demidaemon

I agree with you. It either needs to be more fitted, or involve a great deal less fabric, preferably by bringing up the hem.

  • SRM

Is this the actual same dress the model is wearing? It’s the exact same pattern of rondelles/fleurchons/whatever. If it’s couture would they put the same pattern on two dresses?

    – ignorant of fashion

  • Samuel Joesph Donovan

Love the shape, HATE that fabric. Just another instance of Raf Simons not knowing anything about fabric choice or construction.

(Obviously he knows things about fabric and construction, but his pairings of the two always seem off to me. That fabric looks like something you would use to line a casket. Simply not an inspired choice.)

  • Beardslee

This looks a wee bit too bulky and a wee bit too long. Other than that, I think it is a really interesting dress.
I am still recovering from seeing Blue Jasmine yesterday. What a performance!

  • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

I don’t like the dress a bit but her performance in Blue Jasmine was mesmerizing.

  • GorgeousThings

Girl scout dress for a heavily pregnant girl scout!
Seriously I kinda like it. It’s *just* weird enough, but it does look a little maternity.

  • Rhonda Shore

While I don’t love the dress itself, she still manages to look fabulous…

  • kat89

And if it gets chilly she can wear that matching crocheted granny square sweater she wore a while back…

  • JauntyJohn

    Only on her.

  • bertkeeter

    GOD… DIOR sucks!

  • bertkeeter

PS…. Andre Leon Talley has the matching robe!

  • PastryGoddess

If Helen is the Queen of Fuckingfantastica, then we really need to give Cate her own kingdom.

  • Lucas

What, did she decide to wear her grandmothers quilt on the red carpet? Haha!

  • Barbara Govednik

Dying to know what she’s hiding under that dress — a snack for later, small children she for whom she couldn’t get a sitter, a VW bug…

  • decormaven

I think it’s great. I would have like to have seen a sculptural piece of jewelry- a bracelet, perhaps.

  • ConnieBV

    Suck it, puny mortals. WERQK

  • e jerry powell

This can go so very wrong when photographed from unfortunate angles. Too risky.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I had such high hopes when I clicked on the thumbnail…

  • MarissaLG

Holy Effing S. I love this. Yes the shape is unconventional, but this look is so cool and different and chic and lovely that it totally works on her.

  • crash1212

    LOVE x2.

  • jkatkins

No disagreement from me. All hail Queen Cate!

  • mjude

    bowing the fuck down.

  • capybara_cafe

It doesn’t look bad on her, I just don’t like it. But she’s amazing <3

  • Love. It looks like a giant comfy afghan dress. When she gets sleepy she can just roll up in it all cozy. WANT.

  • demidaemon

I appreciate her risk-taking, but I think I would love this more if it had a sleeker silhouette. It seems a bit too embellished nightgown to me in it’s current shape.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

Only she could pull this off. ONLY her.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I love Cate and adore the two of you, but I can’t with that dress. No, no, no.

  • Ramon Figueroa

I love her. She can make a potato sack work. And “Blue Jasmine” is a magnificent downer, with her as the most glorious centerpiece. It’s “A Streetcar Named Desire” deconstructed.

  • aahlife

I love everything about this. The pattern of the fabric is varied and interesting. She looks uniquely her, and that is what we love about Cate.

  • DeanaDolar

  • Judy_J

I love this gown! She looks fabulous…..she’s wearing the gown, it’s not wearing her. And I might add, I saw Blue Jasmine over the weekend, and Miss Cate is wonderful!

  • Janice Bartels

Okay, I really can’t tell- is that a print or are those things embroidered. And it is couture, so they’d be hand embroidered, right?

  • Sara Padilla

The night got off to a bad start when she decided to cut arm holes in her granny’s afghan.

  • lilyvonschtupp

Is she pregnant again? That’s the only reason why I think she would wear something like that.

    • Sara Padilla

Perhaps she’s just smuggling some snacks/drinks into the movie.

  • valerie saenz

I wish I knew what this fabric was….

  • Suse

This would be a fab dress if it were short and fitted like a sheath. You could actually make several dresses out of this, one of which I would gladly wear. It reminds me not of a granny afghan, but of antique paper weights.

  • cocohall

I am normally not a fan of the mullet hem, but I think this dress might have benefitted from a such a maneuver – slightly higher in the front and cascading into a sort of train at the back. But not very high – just enough to lighten the look and give a peek at her shoes, which appear to fabulous. I like overall. But that surely has more to do with Miss Cate’s ability to do nearly no wrong fashion-wise, than the dress. Hard to imagine anyone else pulling it off. As Tim Gunn (Top Gunn) would say “That’s a lot of look!”

  • fuchaforeva

I LOVE IT TOO!!!! Either you get it r you don’t. OK TLO We are speaking the same language now- makes me SO happy (not sure why, hehe)- you had me scared, for a moment there I though someone had hacked your account in a past couple of posts. BUT YOU GUYS ARE BACK- Labor Day vacay did some good!!!! YAY! As for Cate she can do no wrong and she can totally pull this off!!! Bravo Cate!

  • Trickytrisha

This makes me happy. I love the volume of it, the print is pleasing to the eye, and Miss Cate looks spectacular in it.

  • Rebecca Bledsoe

I’m imagining Cate seeing this dress, and exclaiming with glee, ‘Oh, a crocheted doily dress, I’ll take that one just to screw with the fashion police!” She puts the dress on, looks at her reflection, “Crap, still fecking fabulous…oh well, let’s go get some nachos and then hit the red carpet!”

  • macwell

Werq. It. Out. Kate!!! Love her for wearing this. It had to be either her or Tilda Swinton. Apparently Kate’s stylist are faster…LOL!! 😉

  • luluransom

Love love love it, boys! Did you see the shoes?? Saw them on another site, they’re FAB w the dress.

  • Louise Bryan

Totally cool dress for a presentation venue. The right dress, the right person, the right place, and the right time. Almost like giving drugs, and this is making me feel much better.

  • AnneElliot

My first thought was Angela from Season 3 of Project Runway. She made an entire dress with all those little fleurons!

  • SRQkitten

Love it! Her expression says she does too!

  • RedRaven617

At the end of the evening she whips it off, adds some stakes and has a tent!

  • ThaliaMenninger

  • CT14

  • Like so many crocheted afghans but oh so cuter. But let’s face it, on anyone but her or Tilda (or maybe a pretty mortal who was 6 feet tall) this would look dumb. Only for the professionals.

  • Cindy Claussen

    Looks like crochet circles

  • kim bunchalastnames

“It’s like a Girl Scout gown for the Girl Scout who gets all the most fabulous merit badges.” BRILLIANT. perfect.

  • BrooklynBomber

    Oh, I love this.

  • María José Benites Peralta

I’m obsessed with this look. And yes she is the only one who can WERQ it.

  • fuchaforeva

Jeez, seems many folks on this feed have been SCARRED for life by “grandma’s flowery crocheted quilt”. I’m SO glad I did not grow up near any type of “grandma’s flowery crocheted quilt”! That never even crossed my mind! I did think of fun, colorful candy when I saw Cate’s gown…

  • quiltrx

(claps hands) Just what I said when I saw it on Facebook–merit badge quilt dress!

  • Esz

Given its a f*cking ugly Dior dress (SERIOUSLY WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE HOUSE) – Cate makes it look good. Only she could. Or Swinton

  • mila_8

What’s with the shape of that dress? I don’t mind the Girl Scout coaster badges, but I actually googled to see if she was pregnant. Are those pockets? Bends, folds, phoophs?

  • DeTrop

She was terrific in Blue Jasmine and is a sure nod for an Academy Award nomination. The clothes she wore in BJ were to die for. This is, well, different. Kudos for taking a risk and making it werq.

  • jenuwefa

My first thought was grandma’s crocheted blanket on the sofa…

  • kathrineb

Kind of Fabulous! Although I don’t think the dress moves well, as evidenced by the pic where she is waving.

  • Erica_Vuitton

I really do love the dress, but exposed bra straps with couture? Not sure bout that Cate.

  • jmorino08

Um. No. Although, she’d be able to smuggle in some crazy good snacks wearing that thing!!

  • LauraAgain

    No no no no no.
    All kinds of no.

    Is she expecting?

  • VicksieDo

  • housefulofboys

No shit-tonne from me – I totally love everything about this look. Go Cate!

  • NinjaCate

Yea…. NO. It looks better on the model. Cate is GORGEOUS and the hair and makeup are flawless, but the dress is shapeless on her!

  • ThesisMonkey

of *course* Cate can rock a blanket teepee

  • Monabel

LOVE. It reminded me of those horrid crocheted afghans of the 70’s, only redeemed.

  • Kikishua

I do kinda like this, but you know what would make it perfect? If all those rounds were perfect individuals – no repeats. Like snowflakes.
